³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, ^(A)and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron ^(B)before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel.

⁴ And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David ^(A)king over the house of Judah.

When they told David, ^(B)“It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,”

^18 (A)And the two of them made a covenant before the Lord. David remained at Horesh, and Jonathan went home.

¹³ Then Samuel took ^(A)the horn of oil ^(B)and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. ^(C)And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

¹⁷ And Jehoiada ^(A)made a covenant between the Lord and the king and people, that they should be the Lord's people, and also ^(B)between the king and the people.

²¹ And Abner said to David, “I will arise and go and ^(A)will gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may ^(B)reign over all that your heart desires.” So David sent Abner away, and he went in peace.

¹¹ So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people ^(A)made him head and leader over them. And Jephthah spoke all his words ^(B)before the Lord at ^(C)Mizpah.

^38 [a] “Because of all this ^(A)we make a firm covenant in writing; on ^(B)the sealed document are the names of^[b] our princes, our Levites, and our priests.

Jehoiada's Reforms

¹⁶ And Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and all the people and the king that they should be the Lord's people.

³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord. And they anointed David king over Israel, ^(A)according to the word of the Lord by Samuel.
