¹⁵ So the Lord sent a plague on Israel from that morning until the end of the time designated, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beersheba died.^(A)

²⁴ Joab son of Zeruiah began to count the men but did not finish. God’s wrath came on Israel on account of this numbering,^(A) and the number was not entered in the book^[a] of the annals of King David.

⁸ I looked, and there before me was a pale horse!^(A) Its rider was named Death, and Hades^(B) was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.^(C)

⁷ Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.^(A) There will be famines^(B) and earthquakes in various places.

³⁶ Then the angel^(A) of the Lord went out and put to death^(B) a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian^(C) camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies!

¹⁹ But God struck down^(A) some of the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh, putting seventy^[a] of them to death because they looked^(B) into the ark of the Lord. The people mourned because of the heavy blow the Lord had dealt them.

⁹ but those who died in the plague^(A) numbered 24,000.^(B)

⁴⁶ Then Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer^(A) and put incense in it, along with burning coals from the altar, and hurry to the assembly^(B) to make atonement^(C) for them. Wrath has come out from the Lord;^(D) the plague^(E) has started.” ⁴⁷ So Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly. The plague had already started among the people,^(F) but Aaron offered the incense and made atonement for them. ⁴⁸ He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped.^{(G) 49} But 14,700 people died from the plague, in addition to those who had died because of Korah.^(H)
