⁷ Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ^(A)‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.

¹⁴ When he went ashore he ^(A)saw a great crowd, and ^(B)he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

David's Song of Deliverance

22 And David spoke ^(A)to the Lord the words of this song on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.

¹³ Then Samuel took ^(A)the horn of oil ^(B)and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. ^(C)And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

⁴² And he said to him, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because you have let go out of your hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction,^[a] therefore ^(A)your life shall be for his life, and your people for his people.’”

¹⁸ And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father's house, because you have ^(A)abandoned the commandments of the Lord and ^(B)followed the Baals.

⁸ Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, ^(A)I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince^[a] over my people Israel.

²⁶ Saul went on one side of the mountain, and David and his men on the other side of the mountain. And David was hurrying to get away from Saul. As Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them, ²⁷ a messenger came to Saul, saying, “Hurry and come, for the Philistines have made a raid against the land.” ²⁸ So Saul returned from pursuing after David and went against the Philistines. Therefore that place was called the Rock of Escape.^[a]

¹⁴ And David remained in the strongholds in the wilderness, in the hill country ^(A)of the wilderness of ^(B)Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God did not give him into his hand.
