Ezequías rey de Judá

18 Y aconteció que en el año tercero de Oseas, hijo de Ela, rey de Israel(A), comenzó a reinar Ezequías, hijo de Acaz, rey de Judá(B). 2 (C)Tenía veinticinco años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó veintinueve años en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre era Abi[a], hija de Zacarías. 3 Él hizo lo recto ante los ojos del Señor(D), conforme a todo lo que su padre David había hecho. 4 Quitó los lugares altos(E), derribó los pilares sagrados y cortó la Asera[b]. También hizo pedazos la serpiente de bronce que Moisés había hecho(F), porque hasta aquellos días los hijos de Israel le quemaban incienso; y la llamaban Nehustán[c]. 5 Confió en el Señor, Dios de Israel(G); y después de él, no hubo ninguno como él entre todos los reyes de Judá, ni entre los que fueron antes de él(H), 6 porque se apegó al Señor; no se apartó de[d] Él(I), sino que guardó los mandamientos que el Señor había ordenado a Moisés. 7 Y el Señor estaba con él; adondequiera que iba prosperaba(J). Se rebeló contra el rey de Asiria y no le sirvió(K). 8 Derrotó[e] a los filisteos hasta Gaza(L) y su territorio, desde las torres de atalaya hasta las ciudades fortificadas(M).

9 Y aconteció que en el año cuarto del rey Ezequías, que era el año séptimo de Oseas, hijo de Ela, rey de Israel, Salmanasar, rey de Asiria, subió contra Samaria y la sitió(N), 10 y al cabo de tres años la tomaron. En el año sexto de Ezequías, que era el año noveno de Oseas, rey de Israel, Samaria fue tomada(O). 11 Y el rey de Asiria llevó a Israel al destierro en Asiria, y los puso en Halah y en el Habor, río de Gozán, y en las ciudades de los medos(P), 12 porque no obedecieron la voz del Señor su Dios, sino que quebrantaron su pacto, es decir, todo lo que Moisés, siervo del Señor, había ordenado; no escucharon, ni lo cumplieron(Q).

Invasión de Senaquerib

13 (R)Y en el año catorce del rey Ezequías, subió Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, contra todas las ciudades fortificadas de Judá, y las tomó. 14 Entonces Ezequías, rey de Judá, envió a decir al rey de Asiria en Laquis: He hecho lo malo(S). Retírate[f] de mí; lo que me impongas[g], aceptaré. Y el rey de Asiria impuso a[h] Ezequías, rey de Judá, trescientos talentos[i] de plata y treinta talentos de oro. 15 Y Ezequías le dio toda la plata que se hallaba en la casa del Señor y en los tesoros de la casa del rey(T). 16 En aquel tiempo Ezequías quitó el oro de las puertas del templo del Señor, y de los postes de las puertas que el mismo Ezequías, rey de Judá, había revestido de oro, y lo entregó al rey de Asiria.

17 Entonces el rey de Asiria envió, desde Laquis a Jerusalén, al Tartán(U), al Rabsaris y al Rabsaces con un gran ejército contra el rey Ezequías. Y subieron y llegaron a Jerusalén. Y cuando subieron, llegaron y se colocaron junto al acueducto del estanque superior que está en la calzada del campo del Batanero[j](V). 18 Llamaron al rey, y salió a ellos Eliaquim, hijo de Hilcías(W), que era mayordomo, con el escriba Sebna(X) y el cronista Joa, hijo de Asaf. 19 Y el Rabsaces les dijo: Decid ahora a Ezequías: «Así dice el gran rey, el rey de Asiria: “¿Qué confianza es esta que tú tienes[k](Y)? 20 Tú dices (pero solo son palabras vanas[l]): ‘Tengo consejo y poder para la guerra’. Mas ahora, ¿en quién confías que te has rebelado contra mí(Z)? 21 He aquí, tú confías en el báculo de esta caña quebrada, es decir, en Egipto(AA), en el cual, si un hombre se apoya, penetrará en su mano[m] y la traspasará. Así es Faraón, rey de Egipto, para todos los que confían en él. 22 Pero si me decís: ‘Nosotros confiamos en el Señor nuestro Dios’, ¿no es Él aquel cuyos lugares altos y cuyos altares Ezequías ha quitado(AB) y ha dicho a Judá y a Jerusalén: ‘Adoraréis delante de este altar en Jerusalén’? 23 Ahora pues, te ruego que llegues a un acuerdo[n] con mi señor el rey de Asiria, y yo te daré dos mil caballos, si por tu parte puedes poner jinetes sobre ellos. 24 ¿Cómo, pues, puedes rechazar a[o] un oficial[p] de los menores de los siervos de mi señor, y confiar[q] en Egipto para tener carros y hombres de a caballo? 25 ¿He subido ahora sin el consentimiento del Señor contra este lugar para destruirlo? El Señor me dijo: ‘Sube contra esta tierra y destrúyela’”».

26 Entonces Eliaquim, hijo de Hilcías, Sebna y Joa dijeron al Rabsaces: Te rogamos que hables a tus siervos en arameo(AC), porque nosotros lo entendemos[r], y no nos hables en la lengua de Judá[s] a oídos del pueblo que está sobre la muralla. 27 Pero el Rabsaces les dijo: ¿Acaso me ha enviado mi señor para hablar estas palabras solo a tu señor y a ti, y no a los hombres que están sentados en la muralla, condenados a comer sus propios excrementos y beber su propia orina con vosotros? 28 El Rabsaces se puso en pie, gritó a gran voz en la lengua de Judá, y dijo[t]: Escuchad la palabra del gran rey, el rey de Asiria. 29 Así dice el rey: «Que no os engañe Ezequías, porque él no os podrá librar de mi[u] mano(AD); 30 ni que Ezequías os haga confiar en el Señor, diciendo: “Ciertamente el Señor nos librará, y esta ciudad no será entregada en manos del rey de Asiria”. 31 No escuchéis a Ezequías, porque así dice el rey de Asiria: “Haced la paz conmigo[v] y salid a mí, y coma cada uno de su vid y cada uno de su higuera, y beba(AE) cada cual de las aguas de su cisterna, 32 hasta que yo venga y os lleve a una tierra como vuestra tierra, tierra de grano y de mosto, tierra de pan y de viñas, tierra de olivos y de miel, para que viváis y no muráis(AF)”. Pero no escuchéis a Ezequías porque os engaña, diciendo: “El Señor nos librará”. 33 ¿Acaso alguno de los dioses de las naciones ha librado su tierra de la mano del rey de Asiria(AG)? 34 ¿Dónde están los dioses de Hamat y de Arfad(AH)? ¿Dónde están los dioses de Sefarvaim, de Hena y de Iva(AI)? ¿Cuándo han librado ellos a Samaria de mi mano(AJ)? 35 ¿Quiénes de entre todos los dioses de estas[w] tierras han[x] librado su tierra de mi mano(AK), para que el Señor libre a Jerusalén de mi mano?». 36 Pero el pueblo se quedó callado y no le respondió palabra alguna, porque la orden del rey era: No le respondáis. 37 Entonces Eliaquim, hijo de Hilcías(AL), mayordomo de la casa real, el escriba Sebna y el cronista Joa, hijo de Asaf, fueron a Ezequías con sus vestidos rasgados(AM), y le relataron las palabras del Rabsaces.

Reinado de Ezequías

18 En el tercer año de Oseas hijo de Ela, rey de Israel, comenzó a reinar Ezequías hijo de Acaz rey de Judá. 2 Cuando comenzó a reinar era de veinticinco años, y reinó en Jerusalén veintinueve años. El nombre de su madre fue Abi hija de Zacarías. 3 Hizo lo recto ante los ojos de Jehová, conforme a todas las cosas que había hecho David su padre. 4 Él quitó los lugares altos, y quebró las imágenes, y cortó los símbolos de Asera, e hizo pedazos la serpiente de bronce que había hecho Moisés,(A) porque hasta entonces le quemaban incienso los hijos de Israel; y la llamó Nehustán.[a] 5 En Jehová Dios de Israel puso su esperanza; ni después ni antes de él hubo otro como él entre todos los reyes de Judá. 6 Porque siguió a Jehová, y no se apartó de él, sino que guardó los mandamientos que Jehová prescribió a Moisés. 7 Y Jehová estaba con él; y adondequiera que salía, prosperaba. Caída de Samaria

9 En el cuarto año del rey Ezequías, que era el año séptimo de Oseas hijo de Ela, rey de Israel, subió Salmanasar rey de los asirios contra Samaria, y la sitió, 10 y la tomaron al cabo de tres años. En el año sexto de Ezequías, el cual era el año noveno de Oseas rey de Israel, fue tomada Samaria. 11 Y el rey de Asiria llevó cautivo a Israel a Asiria, y los puso en Halah, en Habor junto al río Gozán, y en las ciudades de los medos; 12 por cuanto no habían atendido a la voz de Jehová su Dios, sino que habían quebrantado su pacto; y todas las cosas que Moisés siervo de Jehová había mandado, no las habían escuchado, ni puesto por obra.

Senaquerib invade a Judá

13 A los catorce años del rey Ezequías, subió Senaquerib rey de Asiria contra todas las ciudades fortificadas de Judá, y las tomó. 14 Entonces Ezequías rey de Judá envió a decir al rey de Asiria que estaba en Laquis: Yo he pecado; apártate de mí, y haré todo lo que me impongas. 19 Y les dijo el Rabsaces: Decid ahora a Ezequías: Así dice el gran rey de Asiria: ¿Qué confianza es esta en que te apoyas? 20 Dices (pero son palabras vacías): Consejo tengo y fuerzas para la guerra. Mas ¿en qué confías, que te has rebelado contra mí? 21 He aquí que confías en este báculo de caña cascada, en Egipto, en el cual si alguno se apoyare, se le entrará por la mano y la traspasará. Tal es Faraón rey de Egipto para todos los que en él confían. 22 Y si me decís: Nosotros confiamos en Jehová nuestro Dios, ¿no es este aquel cuyos lugares altos y altares ha quitado Ezequías, y ha dicho a Judá y a Jerusalén: Delante de este altar adoraréis en Jerusalén? 23 Ahora, pues, yo te ruego que des rehenes a mi señor, el rey de Asiria, y yo te daré dos mil caballos, si tú puedes dar jinetes para ellos. 24 ¿Cómo, pues, podrás resistir a un capitán, al menor de los siervos de mi señor, aunque estés confiado en Egipto con sus carros y su gente de a caballo? 25 ¿Acaso he venido yo ahora sin Jehová a este lugar, para destruirlo? Jehová me ha dicho: Sube a esta tierra, y destrúyela.

26 Entonces dijo Eliaquim hijo de Hilcías, y Sebna y Joa, al Rabsaces: Te rogamos que hables a tus siervos en arameo, porque nosotros lo entendemos, y no hables con nosotros en lengua de Judá a oídos del pueblo que está sobre el muro. 27 Y el Rabsaces les dijo: ¿Me ha enviado mi señor para decir estas palabras a ti y a tu señor, y no a los hombres que están sobre el muro, expuestos a comer su propio estiércol y beber su propia orina con vosotros?

28 Entonces el Rabsaces se puso en pie y clamó a gran voz en lengua de Judá, y habló diciendo: Oíd la palabra del gran rey, el rey de Asiria. 29 Así ha dicho el rey: No os engañe Ezequías, porque no os podrá librar de mi mano. 30 Y no os haga Ezequías confiar en Jehová, diciendo: Ciertamente nos librará Jehová, y esta ciudad no será entregada en mano del rey de Asiria. 31 No escuchéis a Ezequías, porque así dice el rey de Asiria: Haced conmigo paz, y salid a mí, y coma cada uno de su vid y de su higuera, y beba cada uno las aguas de su pozo, 32 hasta que yo venga y os lleve a una tierra como la vuestra, tierra de grano y de vino, tierra de pan y de viñas, tierra de olivas, de aceite, y de miel; y viviréis, y no moriréis. No oigáis a Ezequías, porque os engaña cuando dice: Jehová nos librará. 33 ¿Acaso alguno de los dioses de las naciones ha librado su tierra de la mano del rey de Asiria? 34 ¿Dónde está el dios de Hamat y de Arfad? ¿Dónde está el dios de Sefarvaim, de Hena, y de Iva? ¿Pudieron estos librar a Samaria de mi mano? 35 ¿Qué dios de todos los dioses de estas tierras ha librado su tierra de mi mano, para que Jehová libre de mi mano a Jerusalén?

Hezekiah Reigns in Judah(A)

18 Now it came to pass in the third year of (B)Hoshea the son of Elah, king of Israel, that (C)Hezekiah the son of Ahaz, king of Judah, began to reign. 2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was (D)Abi[a] the daughter of Zechariah. 3 And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father David had done.

4 (E)He removed the [b]high places and broke the sacred pillars, cut down the [c]wooden image and broke in pieces the (F)bronze serpent that Moses had made; for until those days the children of Israel burned incense to it, and called it [d]Nehushtan. 5 He (G)trusted in the Lord God of Israel, (H)so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor who were before him. 6 For he (I)held fast to the Lord; he did not depart from following Him, but kept His commandments, which the Lord had commanded Moses. 7 The Lord (J)was with him; he (K)prospered wherever he went. And he (L)rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him. 8 (M)He [e]subdued the Philistines, as far as Gaza and its territory, (N)from watchtower to fortified city.

9 Now (O)it came to pass in the fourth year of King Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea the son of Elah, king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria and besieged it. 10 And at the end of three years they took it. In the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is, (P)the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. 11 (Q)Then the king of Assyria carried Israel away captive to Assyria, and put them (R)in Halah and by the Habor, the River of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes, 12 because they (S)did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, but transgressed His covenant and all that Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded; and they would neither hear nor do them.

13 And (T)in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them. 14 Then Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria at Lachish, saying, “I have done wrong; turn away from me; whatever you impose on me I will pay.” And the king of Assyria assessed Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold. 15 So Hezekiah (U)gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king’s house. 16 At that time Hezekiah stripped the gold from the doors of the temple of the Lord, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave [f]it to the king of Assyria.

Sennacherib Boasts Against the Lord(V)

17 Then the king of Assyria sent the [g]Tartan, the [h]Rabsaris, and the [i]Rabshakeh from Lachish, with a great army against Jerusalem, to King Hezekiah. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. When they had come up, they went and stood by the (W)aqueduct from the upper pool, (X)which was on the highway to the Fuller’s Field. 18 And when they had called to the king, (Y)Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, Shebna the [j]scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came out to them. 19 Then the Rabshakeh said to them, “Say now to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: (Z)“What confidence is this in which you trust? 20 You speak of having plans and power for war; but they are [k]mere words. And in whom do you trust, that you rebel against me? 21 (AA)Now look! You are trusting in the staff of this broken reed, Egypt, on which if a man leans, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him. 22 But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the Lord our God,’ is it not He (AB)whose [l]high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and said to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem’?” ’ 23 Now therefore, I urge you, give a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses—if you are able on your part to put riders on them! 24 How then will you repel one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust in Egypt for chariots and horsemen? 25 Have I now come up without the Lord against this place to destroy it? The Lord said to me, ‘Go up against this land, and destroy it.’ ”

26 (AC)Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in (AD)Aramaic, for we understand it; and do not speak to us in [m]Hebrew in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”

27 But the Rabshakeh said to them, “Has my master sent me to your master and to you to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat and drink their own waste with you?”

28 Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out with a loud voice in [n]Hebrew, and spoke, saying, “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria! 29 Thus says the king: (AE)‘Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he shall not be able to deliver you from his hand; 30 nor let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, “The Lord will surely deliver us; this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” ’ 31 Do not listen to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria: ‘Make peace with me [o]by a present and come out to me; and every one of you eat from his own (AF)vine and every one from his own fig tree, and every one of you drink the waters of his own cistern; 32 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, (AG)a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive groves and honey, that you may live and not die. But do not listen to Hezekiah, lest he persuade you, saying, “The Lord will deliver us.” 33 (AH)Has any of the gods of the nations at all delivered its land from the hand of the king of Assyria? 34 Where are the gods of (AI)Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim and Hena and (AJ)Ivah? Indeed, have they delivered Samaria from my hand? 35 Who among all the gods of the lands have delivered their countries from my hand, (AK)that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem from my hand?’ ”

36 But the people held their peace and answered him not a word; for the king’s commandment was, “Do not answer him.” 37 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah (AL)with their clothes torn, and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.

Hezekiah Begins His Rule Over Judah

18 Hezekiah son of Ahaz was king of Judah. Hezekiah began to rule during the third year that Hoshea son of Elah was king of Israel. 2 Hezekiah was 25 years old when he began to rule. He ruled 29 years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Abi,[a] the daughter of Zechariah.

3 Hezekiah did what the Lord said was right, just as David his ancestor had done.

4 Hezekiah destroyed the high places. He broke the memorial stones and cut down the Asherah poles. At that time the Israelites burned incense to the bronze snake made by Moses. This bronze snake was called “Nehushtan.”[b] Hezekiah broke this bronze snake into pieces.

5 Hezekiah trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel. There was no one like Hezekiah among all the kings of Judah before him or after him. 6 He was very faithful to the Lord and did not stop following him. He obeyed the commands that the Lord had given to Moses. 7 The Lord was with Hezekiah, so he was successful in everything he did.

Hezekiah broke away from the king of Assyria and stopped serving him. 8 Hezekiah defeated the Philistines all the way to Gaza and the area around it. He defeated all the Philistine cities—from the smallest town to the largest city.

The Assyrians Capture Samaria

9 King Shalmaneser of Assyria went to fight against Samaria. His army surrounded the city. This happened during the fourth year that Hezekiah was king of Judah. (This was also the seventh year that Hoshea son of Elah was king of Israel.) 10 At the end of the third year, Shalmaneser captured Samaria. He took Samaria during the sixth year that Hezekiah was king of Judah. (This was also the ninth year that Hoshea was king of Israel.) 11 The king of Assyria took the Israelites as prisoners to Assyria. He made them live in Halah, on the Habor (the river of Gozan), and in the cities of the Medes. 12 This happened because the Israelites did not obey the Lord their God. They broke his agreement and did not obey everything that Moses, the Lord’s servant, had commanded. The Israelites would not listen to the Lord’s agreement, or do what it taught them to do.

Assyria Gets Ready to Take Judah

13 During Hezekiah’s 14th year as king, King Sennacherib of Assyria went to fight against all the strong cities of Judah. Sennacherib defeated them all. 14 Then King Hezekiah of Judah sent a message to the king of Assyria at Lachish. Hezekiah said, “I have done wrong. Leave me alone, and I will pay whatever you want.”

Then the king of Assyria told King Hezekiah of Judah to pay over 11 tons[c] of silver and over 1 ton[d] of gold. 15 Hezekiah gave all the silver that was in the Lord’s Temple and in the king’s treasuries. 16 That is when Hezekiah cut off the gold that he had put on the doors and doorposts of the Lord’s Temple and gave it to the king of Assyria.

King of Assyria Sends Men to Jerusalem

17 The king of Assyria sent his three most important officers with a large army to King Hezekiah in Jerusalem. They left Lachish and went to Jerusalem. They stood near the aqueduct by the Upper Pool,[e] on the street that leads up to Laundryman’s Field. 18 These men called for the king, but Eliakim son of Hilkiah, Shebna, and Joah son of Asaph went out to meet them. Eliakim was the palace manager, Joah was the record keeper, and Shebna was the royal secretary.

19 The commander said to them, “Tell Hezekiah this is what the great king, the king of Assyria says:

‘What are you trusting in to help you? 20 If you say, “I trust in power and great battle plans,” then that is useless. Now I ask you, who do you trust so much that you are willing to rebel against me? 21 Are you depending on Egypt to help you? Egypt is like a broken walking stick. If you lean on it for support, it will only hurt you and make a hole in your hand. Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, cannot be trusted by anyone who depends on him for help. 22 Maybe you will say, “We trust the Lord our God to help us.” But I know that Hezekiah destroyed the altars and high places where people worshiped the Lord. Hezekiah told the people of Judah and Jerusalem, “You must worship only at this one altar here in Jerusalem.”

23 ‘If you still want to fight my master, the king of Assyria, I will make this agreement with you. I promise that I will give you 2000 horses if you can find enough men to ride them into battle. 24 But even then you couldn’t beat one of my master’s lowest ranking officers. So why do you still depend on Egypt’s chariots and horse soldiers?

25 ‘Now, do you think I came to this country to destroy it without the Lord’s help? No, the Lord said to me, “Go up against this country and destroy it!”’”

26 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, Shebna, and Joah said to the commander, “Please speak to us in Aramaic. We understand that language. Don’t speak to us in the language of Judah because the people on the wall will understand you.”

27 But the commander said, “My master sent me to speak to everyone, not just to you and your master. I must also speak to those people sitting there on the wall. When we surround your city, they will suffer too. Like you, they will become so hungry they will eat their own waste and drink their own urine!”

28 Then the commander, shouting loudly in Hebrew,[f] gave this warning to them all:

Hear this message from the great king, the king of Assyria! 29 This is what the king says: Don’t let Hezekiah fool you! He cannot save you from my power. 30 Don’t listen to him when he tells you to trust in the Lord. Don’t believe him when he says, “The Lord will save us. He will not let the king of Assyria defeat the city.”

31 Don’t listen to Hezekiah! This is what the king of Assyria says: Come out here and show me that you want peace. Then you will all be free to have grapes from your own vines, figs from your own trees, and water from your own well. 32 After some time, I will come and take you to a land like your own. In that new land, you will have plenty of grain for making bread and vineyards for producing wine. I am offering you a choice to live instead of dying.

Don’t believe Hezekiah when he tells you, “The Lord will save us.” He is wrong. 33 Did any of the gods of other nations save their land from the king of Assyria? 34 When I destroyed the cities of Hamath and Arpad, where were their gods? What about the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah? Were any gods able to save Samaria from my power? 35 None of the gods of these other places were able to save their land from me! So why do you think the Lord can save Jerusalem from me?

36 But the people were silent. They did not say a word to the commander, because King Hezekiah had commanded them, “Don’t say anything to him.”

37 Then the palace manager (Eliakim son of Hilkiah), the royal secretary (Shebna), and the record keeper (Joah son of Asaph) went to Hezekiah. Their clothes were torn to show they were upset. They told Hezekiah everything the Assyrian commander had said.
