Ang Pangakong Pagbabalik ng Panginoon

3 Mga minamahal, ito ang ikalawang sulat ko sa inyo. Isinulat ko ang dalawang sulat na ito upang ang mga ito'y magsilbing paalalang gigising sa inyong malilinis na isip. 2 Nais kong alalahanin ninyo ang mga ipinahayag noon ng mga banal na propeta, at ang utos na ibinigay ng ating Panginoon at Tagapagligtas sa pamamagitan ng mga apostol na isinugo sa inyo. 3 Una (A) sa lahat, dapat ninyong malaman na sa mga huling araw ay darating ang manlilibak at lilibakin kayo. Ang mga taong ito'y namumuhay ayon sa kanilang sariling pagnanasa. 4 Sasabihin nila, “Nasaan ang pangako ng kanyang pagdating? Namatay na ang ating mga ninuno ngunit wala pa ring pagbabago mula nang likhain ang mundong ito.” 5 Sinadya (B) nilang huwag pansinin ang katotohanang matagal nang ang langit ay narito at sa pamamagitan ng salita ng Diyos, at inanyuan niya ang lupa mula sa tubig at sa gitna ng tubig. 6 Sa (C) pamamagitan din ng tubig ginunaw noon ng Diyos ang daigdig. 7 Ngunit sa pamamagitan din ng gayunding salita, ang kasalukuyang langit at lupa ay iningatan para sa apoy na inilalaan sa araw ng paghuhukom at pagpaparusa sa masasamang tao.

8 Subalit (D) huwag ninyong kaliligtaan ang isang bagay na ito, mga minamahal, na para sa Panginoon ang isang araw ay tulad ng sanlibong taon, at ang sanlibong taon ay tulad ng isang araw. 9 Hindi nagpapabaya ang Panginoon tungkol sa kanyang pangako gaya ng inaakala ng iba. Pinagtitiisan lamang kayo ng Panginoon kaya hindi muna niya ginagawa ang ayon sa kanyang pangako. Binibigyan pa niya ng pagkakataon ang lahat na magsisi sapagkat ayaw niyang mapahamak ang sinuman. 10 Ngunit (E) darating ang araw ng Panginoon tulad ng pagdating ng isang magnanakaw. Maglalaho ang kalangitan kasabay ng isang malakas na tunog. Tutupukin ng apoy ang sangkap sa kalangitan at ang lupa at ang lahat ng naroon ay masusunog.[a] 11 At dahil ganito mawawasak ang lahat ng bagay, anong uri ng pagkatao ang dapat ninyong ipamuhay? Hindi ba dapat kayong mamuhay na banal at maka-Diyos 12 habang hinihintay ninyo ang Araw ng Diyos at pinadadali ang pagdating nito? Sa araw na iyon, matutupok ang kalangitan at ang mga bagay na naroon ay matutunaw sa matinding init. 13 Ngunit, (F) naghihintay tayo sa pagdating ng pangako ng Diyos, ang bagong langit at ang bagong lupa na kung saan tinatahanan ng katuwiran.

14 Kaya nga, mga minamahal, habang hinihintay ninyo ang mga bagay na ito, sikapin ninyong mamuhay nang mapayapa, walang dungis at kapintasan sa paningin ng Diyos. 15 Isipin ninyong ang pagtitiis ng Panginoon ay para sa inyong kaligtasan. Ito rin ang isinulat sa inyo ng minamahal nating kapatid na si Pablo, ayon sa karunungang ibinigay sa kanya ng Diyos. 16 Ganito ang lagi niyang sinasabi sa lahat ng kanyang mga sulat ukol sa paksang ito, bagama't may ilang bahagi sa kanyang liham ang mahirap unawain at binibigyan ng maling kahulugan ng mga mangmang at magugulo ang pag-iisip. Ganyan din ang kanilang ginagawa sa ibang mga Kasulatan, kaya nga't ipinapahamak nila ang kanilang sarili. 17 Ngayong alam na ninyo ito, mga kapatid, mag-ingat kayo upang hindi kayo mailigaw ng mga masasamang tao, nang sa gayo'y hindi kayo matinag sa inyong matatag na kalagayan. 18 Sa halip, pagsikapan ninyong lumago sa biyaya at sa pagkakilala sa ating Panginoon at Tagapagligtas na si Jesu-Cristo. Sa kanya ang kaluwalhatian ngayon at magpakailanman! Amen.[b]

The Day of the Lord

3 Dear friends,(A) this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders(B) to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. 2 I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets(C) and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.(D)

3 Above all, you must understand that in the last days(E) scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.(F) 4 They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised?(G) Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”(H) 5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word(I) the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.(J) 6 By these waters also the world of that time(K) was deluged and destroyed.(L) 7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire,(M) being kept for the day of judgment(N) and destruction of the ungodly.

8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.(O) 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise,(P) as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient(Q) with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.(R)

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.(S) The heavens will disappear with a roar;(T) the elements will be destroyed by fire,(U) and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.[a](V)

11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward(W) to the day of God and speed its coming.[b](X) That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.(Y) 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth,(Z) where righteousness dwells.

14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless(AA) and at peace with him. 15 Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience(AB) means salvation,(AC) just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.(AD) 16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable(AE) people distort,(AF) as they do the other Scriptures,(AG) to their own destruction.

17 Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard(AH) so that you may not be carried away by the error(AI) of the lawless(AJ) and fall from your secure position.(AK) 18 But grow in the grace(AL) and knowledge(AM) of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.(AN) To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.(AO)

The Promise of the Lord’s Coming

3 This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you; in them I am trying to arouse your sincere intention by reminding you 2 that you should remember the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets, and the commandment of the Lord and Saviour spoken through your apostles. 3 First of all you must understand this, that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and indulging their own lusts 4 and saying, ‘Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since our ancestors died,[a] all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation!’ 5 They deliberately ignore this fact, that by the word of God heavens existed long ago and an earth was formed out of water and by means of water, 6 through which the world of that time was deluged with water and perished. 7 But by the same word the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire, being kept until the day of judgement and destruction of the godless.

8 But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. 9 The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you,[b] not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.[c]

11 Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening[d] the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? 13 But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.

Final Exhortation and Doxology

14 Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given to him, 16 speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned, beware that you are not carried away with the error of the lawless and lose your own stability. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.[e]
