Shunemitiskan och de sju svältåren

8 (A) Elisha sade till kvinnan vars son han hade uppväckt till livet: ”Res dig och dra bort med ditt husfolk och bo var du kan, för Herren har kallat på svält och den ska komma över landet i sju år.” 2 Då bröt kvinnan upp och gjorde som gudsmannen sade. Hon drog bort med sitt husfolk och bodde i filisteernas land[a] i sju år.

3 Men när de sju åren hade gått, kom kvinnan tillbaka från filisteernas land. Hon gick för att vädja till kungen om att få tillbaka sitt hus och sin mark. 4 Kungen höll just på att tala med Gehasi, gudsmannens tjänare, och sade: ”Berätta för mig om alla de storverk som Elisha har gjort.” 5 Just som han höll på att berätta för kungen hur Elisha hade uppväckt en död, kom kvinnan vars son han uppväckt till livet för att vädja till kungen om att få tillbaka sitt hus och sin mark. Då sade Gehasi: ”Min herre kung! Här är kvinnan, och här är hennes son som Elisha uppväckte.” 6 Då frågade kungen ut kvinnan, och hon berättade allt för honom. Sedan lät kungen en hovman gå med henne, och kungen sade: ”Skaffa tillbaka allt som tillhör henne, och dessutom all avkastning på marken, från den dag då hon lämnade landet ända till nu.”

Elisha och Arams kung Ben-Hadad

7 Elisha kom till Damaskus[b] medan den arameiske kungen Ben-Hadad låg sjuk. När man berättade för honom att gudsmannen hade kommit dit, 8 (B) sade kungen till Hasael: ”Ta med dig gåvor och gå och möt gudsmannen och fråga Herren genom honom, om jag kommer att bli frisk från den här sjukdomen.”

9 Hasael gick emot honom och tog med sig gåvor, allt det bästa som fanns i Damaskus, så mycket som fyrtio kameler kunde bära. Han kom och trädde fram inför honom och sade: ”Din son Ben-Hadad, kung av Aram, har skickat mig till dig och låter fråga: Kommer jag att bli frisk från denna sjukdom?” 10 Elisha svarade honom: ”Gå och säg till honom: Du ska bli frisk igen. Men Herren har uppenbarat för mig att han ändå ska dö.”

11 Gudsmannen stirrade framför sig och såg på honom tills han blev besvärad. Sedan började han gråta. 12 (C) Då sade Hasael: ”Varför gråter min herre?” Han svarade: ”Därför att jag vet hur mycket ont du kommer att göra Israels barn. Du kommer att sätta eld på deras befästa platser, döda deras unga män med svärd, krossa deras spädbarn och skära upp deras havande kvinnor.” 13 (D) Hasael sade: ”Vad är din tjänare, den hunden, att han skulle kunna göra så stora ting?” Elisha svarade: ”Herren har uppenbarat för mig att du ska bli kung över Aram.”

14 Han gick ifrån Elisha och kom till sin herre, som frågade honom: ”Vad sade Elisha till dig?” Han svarade: ”Han sade till mig att du ska bli frisk igen.” 15 Men dagen därpå tog han ett täcke och doppade det i vatten och bredde ut det över kungens ansikte. Det blev hans död. Och Hasael blev kung[c] efter honom.

Joram blir kung i Juda

16 (E) I Israels kung Jorams, Ahabs sons, femte regeringsår, medan Joshafat ännu var kung i Juda, blev Joram, Joshafats son, kung i Juda. 17 Han var trettiotvå år när han blev kung, och han regerade åtta år[d] i Jerusalem. 18 Men han vandrade på Israels kungars väg, så som Ahabs hus hade gjort, för hans hustru var en dotter till Ahab. Han gjorde det som var ont i Herrens ögon. 19 (F) Men Herren ville ändå inte förgöra Juda för sin tjänare Davids skull. Han hade lovat att han och hans söner skulle ha en lampa för alltid.

20 (G) I hans tid avföll Edom från Juda välde och satte en egen kung över sig. 21 Då drog Joram över till Sair[e] med alla sina vagnar. På natten gick han till anfall och slog edomiterna som omringat honom samt befälhavarna över deras vagnar, men folket flydde till sina tält.

22 (H) Så avföll Edom från Juda välde och det har varit skilt därifrån ända till denna dag. Vid samma tid avföll också Libna. 23 Vad som mer finns att säga om Jorams gärningar och allt som han gjorde, det är skrivet i Juda kungars krönika. 24 (I) Joram gick till vila hos sina fäder och blev begravd hos sina fäder i Davids stad. Hans son Ahasja blev kung efter honom.

Ahasja blir kung i Juda

25 (J) I Jorams, Ahabs sons, Israels kungs, tolfte regeringsår blev Ahasja, Jorams son, kung i Juda. 26 (K) Ahasja var tjugotvå år när han blev kung, och han regerade ett år[f] i Jerusalem. Hans mor hette Atalja och hon var dotter till Omri, Israels kung. 27 Han vandrade på samma väg som Ahabs hus och gjorde det som var ont i Herrens ögon liksom Ahabs hus hade gjort. Han var ju nära släkt med Ahabs hus.

28 Han drog ut tillsammans med Joram, Ahabs son[g], och stred mot Arams kung Hasael vid Ramot i Gilead[h]. Men Joram blev sårad av arameerna. 29 (L) Då vände kung Joram tillbaka för att i Jisreel läka såren som arameerna hade gett honom vid Ramot i striden mot kung Hasael av Aram. Och Juda kung Ahasja, Jorams son, for ner för att besöka Joram, Ahabs son, i Jisreel, eftersom han låg sjuk.

En kvinna får tillbaka sin mark

8 Elisha hade sagt till kvinnan, vars son han hade uppväckt från de döda: ”Ta din familj och flytta till ett annat land, för Herren ska låta en hungersnöd drabba landet, och den kommer att vara i sju år.”

2 Kvinnan lydde gudsmannens uppmaning och bosatte sig med sin familj i filistéernas land under sju år. 3 När de sju åren hade gått, återvände hon till Israel, där hon sökte upp kungen för att få tillbaka sitt hus och sin mark. 4 Just som hon kom in, höll kungen på att tala med Gechasi, gudsmannens tjänare. ”Berätta för mig om de under Elisha har gjort”, bad kungen honom. 5 Gechasi berättade då för kungen hur Elisha hade uppväckt en död, och just i det ögonblicket kom kvinnan in, vars son Elisha hade väckt till liv. Hon kom för att be kungen om att få tillbaka sitt hus och sin mark. ”Min herre och kung”, sa Gechasi. ”Här är ju kvinnan och pojken, som Elisha förde tillbaka till livet!”

6 Då frågade kungen ut henne, och hon berättade allt för honom. Sedan gav kungen en av sina tjänstemän i uppdrag att se till att hon fick tillbaka allt det hon hade ägt och dessutom ersättning för den inkomst hon förlorat under hela den tid hon varit borta från landet.

Hasael mördar kung Ben-Hadad

7 Elisha begav sig till Damaskus i Aram, där kung Ben-Hadad låg sjuk. När han fick veta att gudsmannen var där, 8 sa han till Hasael: ”Ta med dig en gåva och gå till gudsmannen och fråga Herren genom honom om jag kommer att bli frisk igen!”

9 Hasael gick då för att träffa Elisha och tog med sig det bästa Damaskus hade att erbjuda, så mycket som fyrtio kameler kunde bära. ”Din son Ben-Hadad, kungen i Aram, har sänt mig hit för att fråga om han kommer att bli frisk”, sa han till Elisha.

10 ”Säg till honom att han ska bli frisk[a]”, svarade Elisha. ”Men Herren har visat mig att han ändå snart kommer att dö.”

11 Elisha stirrade så länge på Hasael att denne blev besvärad, och sedan började gudsmannen gråta. 12 ”Varför gråter du, min herre?” frågade Hasael. ”Därför att jag vet vilka fruktansvärda saker du kommer att göra mot israeliterna”, svarade Elisha. ”Du kommer att bränna ner deras fästningar, döda de unga männen med svärd, krossa de små barnen mot marken och skära upp magen på havande kvinnor.”

13 ”Hur skulle jag, din tjänare, som bara är en hund, kunna göra något sådant?” sa Hasael. ”Herren har uppenbarat för mig att du kommer att bli kung över Aram”, svarade Elisha.

14 När Hasael gick från Elisha och återvände till sin herre, frågade kungen: ”Vad sa han till dig?” ”Han talade om för mig att du skulle bli frisk”, svarade Hasael. 15 Men följande dag tog Hasael en filt, doppade den i vatten och höll den över kungens ansikte tills han dog.

Sedan blev Hasael kung.

Joram regerar i Juda

(2 Krön 21:5-10; 21:20)

16 Under Jorams, Achavs sons, femte regeringsår i Israel, medan Joshafat var kung i Juda, blev Joram, Joshafats son, kung i Juda. 17 Han var trettiotvå år gammal när han blev kung, och han regerade i åtta år i Jerusalem. 18 Men han följde kungarna i Israel i spåren, som Achavs familj hade gjort. Han gifte sig med en dotter till Achav. Han gjorde det som var ont i Herrens ögon. 19 Men eftersom Herren hade lovat sin tjänare David att han alltid skulle låta en lampa brinna för honom och hans ättlingar, utplånade han inte Juda.

20 Under Jorams regering gjorde Edom uppror mot Juda och tog sig en egen kung. 21 Joram drog till Sair med alla sina vagnar. På natten bröt han upp och slog edoméerna som hade omringat honom och hans vagnsbefälhavare, men folket flydde hem. 22 Sedan Edom gjorde uppror har det inte mer stått under Judas makt. Livna gjorde också uppror vid samma tid.

23 Kung Jorams historia i övrigt och vad han gjorde finns nedtecknat i Juda kungars krönika. 24 Joram dog och gick till vila hos sina förfäder. Han blev begraven bland dem i Davids stad.

Achasja regerar i Juda

(2 Krön 22:1-6)

Achasja, Jorams son, blev kung efter honom. 25 Under det tolfte året av Israels kung Jorams, Achavs sons regering, började Achasja, Jorams son, regera i Juda. 26 Achasja var tjugotvå år gammal när han blev kung, och han regerade i ett år i Jerusalem. Hans mor hette Atalja och var sondotter till Israels kung Omri. 27 Han vandrade på samma vägar som Achavs familj och gjorde det som var ont i Herrens ögon, så som Achavs familj hade gjort, och han var ingift i Achavs släkt.

28 Achasja och kung Joram i Israel, Achavs son, gick till krig mot den arameiske kungen Hasael vid Ramot i Gilead. Joram blev sårad av araméerna 29 och vände tillbaka till Jisreel för att få sina sår läkta som tillfogats honom vid Rama i striden mot Arams kung Hasael. Medan han låg sjuk i Jisreel, kom kung Achasja av Juda, Jorams son, på besök till honom.

2 And the woman arose, and did after the saying of the man of God: and she went with her household, and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years.

3 And it came to pass at the seven years' end, that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines: and she went forth to cry unto the king for her house and for her land.

4 And the king talked with Gehazi the servant of the man of God, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, all the great things that Elisha hath done.

5 And it came to pass, as he was telling the king how he had restored a dead body to life, that, behold, the woman, whose son he had restored to life, cried to the king for her house and for her land. And Gehazi said, My lord, O king, this is the woman, and this is her son, whom Elisha restored to life.

6 And when the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king appointed unto her a certain officer, saying, Restore all that was hers, and all the fruits of the field since the day that she left the land, even until now.

7 And Elisha came to Damascus; and Benhadad the king of Syria was sick; and it was told him, saying, The man of God is come hither.

8 And the king said unto Hazael, Take a present in thine hand, and go, meet the man of God, and enquire of the Lord by him, saying, Shall I recover of this disease?

9 So Hazael went to meet him, and took a present with him, even of every good thing of Damascus, forty camels' burden, and came and stood before him, and said, Thy son Benhadad king of Syria hath sent me to thee, saying, Shall I recover of this disease?

10 And Elisha said unto him, Go, say unto him, Thou mayest certainly recover: howbeit the Lord hath shewed me that he shall surely die.

11 And he settled his countenance stedfastly, until he was ashamed: and the man of God wept.

12 And Hazael said, Why weepeth my lord? And he answered, Because I know the evil that thou wilt do unto the children of Israel: their strong holds wilt thou set on fire, and their young men wilt thou slay with the sword, and wilt dash their children, and rip up their women with child.

13 And Hazael said, But what, is thy servant a dog, that he should do this great thing? And Elisha answered, The Lord hath shewed me that thou shalt be king over Syria.

14 So he departed from Elisha, and came to his master; who said to him, What said Elisha to thee? And he answered, He told me that thou shouldest surely recover.

15 And it came to pass on the morrow, that he took a thick cloth, and dipped it in water, and spread it on his face, so that he died: and Hazael reigned in his stead.

16 And in the fifth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel, Jehoshaphat being then king of Judah, Jehoram the son of Je hoshaphat king of Judah began to reign.

17 Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.

18 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as did the house of Ahab: for the daughter of Ahab was his wife: and he did evil in the sight of the Lord.

19 Yet the Lord would not destroy Judah for David his servant's sake, as he promised him to give him alway a light, and to his children.

20 In his days Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah, and made a king over themselves.

21 So Joram went over to Zair, and all the chariots with him: and he rose by night, and smote the Edomites which compassed him about, and the captains of the chariots: and the people fled into their tents.

22 Yet Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah unto this day. Then Libnah revolted at the same time.

23 And the rest of the acts of Joram, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

24 And Joram slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David: and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead.

25 In the twelfth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel did Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah begin to reign.

26 Two and twenty years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign; and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Athaliah, the daughter of Omri king of Israel.

12 And Hazael said, Why do you weep, my lord? He answered, Because I know the evil that you will do to the Israelites. You will burn their strongholds, slay their young men with the sword, dash their infants in pieces, and rip up their pregnant women.

13 And Hazael said, What is your servant, only a dog, that he should do this monstrous thing? And Elisha answered, The Lord has shown me that you will be king over Syria.

14 Then [Hazael] departed from Elisha and came to his master, who said to him, What did Elisha say to you? And he answered, He told me you would surely recover.

15 But the next day Hazael took the bedspread and dipped it in water and spread it on [the Syrian king’s] face, so that he died. And Hazael reigned in his stead.

16 In the fifth year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, Jehoshaphat being then king of Judah, Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah began to reign.

17 He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.

18 He walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, as did the house of Ahab, for [Athaliah] the daughter of Ahab was his wife. He did evil in the sight of the Lord.

19 Yet, for David His servant’s sake, the Lord would not destroy Judah, for He promised to give him and his sons a lamp forever.

20 In his days, Edom revolted from the rule of Judah and set up a king over themselves.

22 So Edom revolted from the rule of Judah to this day. Then Libnah revolted at the same time.

The Shunammite’s Land Restored

8 Now Elisha had said to the woman(A) whose son he had restored to life, “Go away with your family and stay for a while wherever you can, because the Lord has decreed a famine(B) in the land that will last seven years.”(C) 2 The woman proceeded to do as the man of God said. She and her family went away and stayed in the land of the Philistines seven years.

3 At the end of the seven years she came back from the land of the Philistines and went to appeal to the king for her house and land. 4 The king was talking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, and had said, “Tell me about all the great things Elisha has done.” 5 Just as Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had restored(D) the dead to life, the woman whose son Elisha had brought back to life came to appeal to the king for her house and land.

Gehazi said, “This is the woman, my lord the king, and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life.” 6 The king asked the woman about it, and she told him.

Then he assigned an official to her case and said to him, “Give back everything that belonged to her, including all the income from her land from the day she left the country until now.”

Hazael Murders Ben-Hadad

7 Elisha went to Damascus,(E) and Ben-Hadad(F) king of Aram was ill. When the king was told, “The man of God has come all the way up here,” 8 he said to Hazael,(G) “Take a gift(H) with you and go to meet the man of God. Consult(I) the Lord through him; ask him, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”

9 Hazael went to meet Elisha, taking with him as a gift forty camel-loads of all the finest wares of Damascus. He went in and stood before him, and said, “Your son Ben-Hadad king of Aram has sent me to ask, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”

10 Elisha answered, “Go and say to him, ‘You will certainly recover.’(J) Nevertheless,[a] the Lord has revealed to me that he will in fact die.” 11 He stared at him with a fixed gaze until Hazael was embarrassed.(K) Then the man of God began to weep.(L)

12 “Why is my lord weeping?” asked Hazael.

“Because I know the harm(M) you will do to the Israelites,” he answered. “You will set fire to their fortified places, kill their young men with the sword, dash(N) their little children(O) to the ground, and rip open(P) their pregnant women.”

13 Hazael said, “How could your servant, a mere dog,(Q) accomplish such a feat?”

“The Lord has shown me that you will become king(R) of Aram,” answered Elisha.

14 Then Hazael left Elisha and returned to his master. When Ben-Hadad asked, “What did Elisha say to you?” Hazael replied, “He told me that you would certainly recover.” 15 But the next day he took a thick cloth, soaked it in water and spread it over the king’s face, so that he died.(S) Then Hazael succeeded him as king.

Jehoram King of Judah(T)

16 In the fifth year of Joram(U) son of Ahab king of Israel, when Jehoshaphat was king of Judah, Jehoram(V) son of Jehoshaphat began his reign as king of Judah. 17 He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. 18 He followed the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for he married a daughter(W) of Ahab. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord. 19 Nevertheless, for the sake of his servant David, the Lord was not willing to destroy(X) Judah. He had promised to maintain a lamp(Y) for David and his descendants forever.

20 In the time of Jehoram, Edom rebelled against Judah and set up its own king.(Z) 21 So Jehoram[b] went to Zair with all his chariots. The Edomites surrounded him and his chariot commanders, but he rose up and broke through by night; his army, however, fled back home. 22 To this day Edom has been in rebellion(AA) against Judah. Libnah(AB) revolted at the same time.

23 As for the other events of Jehoram’s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 24 Jehoram rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. And Ahaziah his son succeeded him as king.

Ahaziah King of Judah(AC)

25 In the twelfth(AD) year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign. 26 Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem one year. His mother’s name was Athaliah,(AE) a granddaughter of Omri(AF) king of Israel. 27 He followed the ways of the house of Ahab(AG) and did evil(AH) in the eyes of the Lord, as the house of Ahab had done, for he was related by marriage to Ahab’s family.

28 Ahaziah went with Joram son of Ahab to war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth Gilead.(AI) The Arameans wounded Joram; 29 so King Joram returned to Jezreel(AJ) to recover from the wounds the Arameans had inflicted on him at Ramoth[c] in his battle with Hazael(AK) king of Aram.

Then Ahaziah(AL) son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to Jezreel to see Joram son of Ahab, because he had been wounded.
