God spreekt door Elisa
8 Tegen de vrouw van wie hij de zoon weer levend had gemaakt, had Elisa gezegd: ‘Verhuis met uw gezin naar een andere streek, want de Here heeft een hongersnood over Israël aangekondigd die zeven jaar gaat duren.’ Deze hongersnood kwam ook. 2 Zo trok de vrouw op aanraden van Elisa met haar gezin naar het land van de Filistijnen en bleef daar zeven jaar wonen. 3 Na afloop van de hongersnood keerde zij terug naar Israël en ging naar de koning om hun huis en land terug te vragen. 4 Toen zij binnenkwam, was de koning net in gesprek met Elisaʼs dienaar Gehazi en zei: ‘Vertel mij eens iets over de grote daden die Elisa heeft verricht.’ 5 Gehazi vertelde hem hoe Elisa eens een kleine jongen weer tot leven had gebracht. Precies op dat moment kwam de moeder van de jongen binnen. ‘Koning,’ riep Gehazi, ‘dit is de moeder van de jongen, over wie ik u vertelde, die door Elisa weer tot leven werd gewekt!’ 6 ‘Is dit waar?’ vroeg de koning haar. En zij beaamde dat. Daarop gaf hij een van zijn ambtenaren opdracht ervoor te zorgen dat al haar vroegere eigendommen werden teruggegeven, inclusief de waarde van de oogsten die waren binnengehaald tijdens haar afwezigheid.
7 Korte tijd later ging Elisa naar Damascus, de hoofdstad van Syrië, waar koning Benhadad ziek lag. Iemand vertelde de koning dat de profeet was aangekomen. 8 Bij het horen van dat nieuws zei de koning tegen Hazaël: ‘Breng een geschenk naar de man van God en verzoek hem de Here te vragen of ik weer beter zal worden.’
9 Hazaël ging met veertig kameelladingen van de beste producten uit Damascus als geschenk naar Elisa en zei tegen hem: ‘Koning Benhadad van Syrië heeft mij gestuurd om u te vragen of hij van deze ziekte zal genezen.’ 10 Elisa antwoordde: ‘Ga terug en zeg tegen hem: u zult niet van deze ziekte genezen, want de Here heeft mij laten zien dat u spoedig zult sterven.’ 11 Elisa staarde Hazaël net zolang aan tot hij verlegen werd en barstte toen in tranen uit. 12 ‘Wat is er aan de hand, heer?’ vroeg Hazaël hem. Elisa antwoordde: ‘Ik weet welke vreselijke dingen u zult gaan doen met het volk van Israël, u zult hun forten verbranden, de jonge mannen doden, hun kinderen tegen de rotsen doodslaan en de buiken van zwangere vrouwen opensnijden.’ 13 ‘Maar ik ben toch een onbelangrijk man!’ zei Hazaël. ‘Zoiets zou ik nooit kunnen doen!’ Maar Elisa zei: ‘De Here heeft mij laten zien dat u koning van Syrië zult worden.’ 14 Toen Hazaël terugkwam, vroeg de koning hem: ‘En, wat heeft hij u verteld?’ Hazaël antwoordde: ‘Hij zei dat u weer beter zult worden.’ 15 Maar de volgende dag doopte Hazaël een deken in water en drukte die op het gezicht van de koning, net zolang tot hij stikte. Zo werd Hazaël koning van Syrië.
16 Koning Joram, de zoon van koning Josafat van Juda, kwam aan de macht in het vijfde regeringsjaar van koning Joram van Israël, de zoon van Achab. 17 Joram van Juda was tweeëndertig jaar toen hij koning werd en hij regeerde acht jaar vanuit Jeruzalem. 18 Maar hij was net zo slecht als Achab en zondigde net zo tegen de Here als de koningen van Israël, hij trouwde zelfs met een van Achabs dochters. 19 Desondanks vernietigde God Juda niet, want Hij had David beloofd zijn nakomelingen te beschermen en te leiden. 20 Tijdens Jorams bewind kwamen de Edomieten in opstand tegen Juda en benoemden een eigen koning. 21 Koning Joram probeerde zonder succes de opstand de kop in te drukken, hij stak de Jordaan over en viel de stad Zaïr aan, maar hij werd al snel omsingeld door het leger van Edom. ʼs Nachts brak hij door de linies van Edom, zodat zijn leger kon ontkomen. 22 Zo wist Edom tot op de dag van vandaag zijn onafhankelijkheid te behouden. In die tijd kwam ook Libna in opstand.
23 De rest van de geschiedenis van koning Joram is beschreven in de Kronieken van de koningen van Juda. 24,25 Hij stierf en werd begraven op de koninklijke begraafplaats in de Stad van David, het oude gedeelte van Jeruzalem. Zijn zoon Ahazia werd de nieuwe koning. Dat gebeurde in het twaalfde regeringsjaar van koning Joram van Israël, de zoon van Achab. 26 Ahazia was tweeëntwintig jaar toen hij de troon besteeg, maar hij hield het slechts een jaar uit in Jeruzalem. Zijn moeder was Athalia, een kleindochter van koning Omri van Israël. 27 Ahazia was een goddeloze koning, net als de nakomelingen van koning Achab, hij was namelijk door zijn huwelijk met Achabs familie verwant. 28 Hij koos de kant van koning Joram van Israël, de zoon van Achab, en samen streden zij tegen koning Hazaël van Syrië bij Ramot in Gilead. Koning Joram werd in de veldslag gewond, 29 en ging daarom naar Jizreël om weer op krachten te komen en zijn wonden te laten genezen. Tijdens zijn verblijf daar kwam koning Ahazia van Juda hem opzoeken.

The Shunammite's Land Restored
8 Now Elisha had said to the woman (A)whose son he had restored to life, “Arise, and depart with your household, and sojourn wherever you can, for the Lord (B)has called for a famine, and it will come upon the land for (C)seven years.” 2 So the woman arose and did according to the word of the man of God. She went with her household and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years. 3 And at the end of the seven years, when the woman returned from the land of the Philistines, she went to appeal to the king for her house and her land. 4 Now the king was talking with (D)Gehazi the servant of the man of God, saying, “Tell me all the great things that Elisha has done.” 5 And while he was telling the king how (E)Elisha had restored the dead to life, behold, the woman whose son he had restored to life appealed to the king for her house and her land. And Gehazi said, “My lord, O king, here is the woman, and here is her son whom Elisha restored to life.” 6 And when the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king appointed an official for her, saying, “Restore all that was hers, together with all the produce of the fields from the day that she left the land until now.”
Hazael Murders Ben-hadad
7 Now Elisha came to (F)Damascus. (G)Ben-hadad the king of Syria was sick. And when it was told him, “The man of God has come here,” 8 the king said to (H)Hazael, (I)“Take a present with you and go to meet the man of God, (J)and inquire of the Lord through him, saying, ‘Shall I recover from this sickness?’” 9 So Hazael went to meet him, and took a present with him, all kinds of goods of Damascus, forty camels' loads. When he came and stood before him, he said, (K)“Your son Ben-hadad king of Syria has sent me to you, saying, ‘Shall I recover from this sickness?’” 10 And Elisha said to him, (L)“Go, say to him, ‘You shall certainly recover,’ but[a] the Lord has shown me that (M)he shall certainly die.” 11 And he fixed his gaze and stared at him, (N)until he was embarrassed. And the man of God wept. 12 And Hazael said, “Why does my lord weep?” He answered, “Because I know (O)the evil that you will do to the people of Israel. You will set on fire their fortresses, and you will kill their young men with the sword (P)and dash in pieces their little ones and rip open their pregnant women.” 13 And Hazael said, “What is your servant, (Q)who is but a dog, that he should do this great thing?” Elisha answered, (R)“The Lord has shown me that you are to be king over Syria.” 14 Then he departed from Elisha and came to his master, who said to him, “What did Elisha say to you?” And he answered, “He told me (S)that you would certainly recover.” 15 But the next day he took the bed cloth[b] and dipped it in water and spread it over his face, till he died. And Hazael became king in his place.
Jehoram Reigns in Judah
16 In the fifth year of (T)Joram the son of Ahab, king of Israel, when Jehoshaphat was king of Judah,[c] Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, began to reign. 17 He was (U)thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. 18 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for (V)the daughter of Ahab was his wife. And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. 19 Yet the Lord was not willing to destroy Judah, for the sake of David his servant, (W)since he promised to give (X)a lamp to him and to his sons forever.
20 In his days Edom revolted from the rule of Judah and set up (Y)a king of their own. 21 Then Joram[d] passed over to Zair with all his chariots and rose by night, and he and his chariot commanders struck the Edomites who had surrounded him, but his army (Z)fled home. 22 (AA)So Edom revolted from the rule of Judah to this day. Then (AB)Libnah revolted at the same time. 23 Now the rest of the acts of Joram, and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 24 So Joram slept with his fathers and was buried (AC)with his fathers in the city of David, and (AD)Ahaziah his son reigned in his place.
Ahaziah Reigns in Judah
25 (AE)In the (AF)twelfth year of Joram the son of Ahab, king of Israel, Ahaziah the son of Jehoram, king of Judah, began to reign. 26 Ahaziah was (AG)twenty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Athaliah; she was (AH)a granddaughter of Omri king of Israel. 27 He also walked in the way of the house of Ahab and did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, as the house of Ahab had done, for he was son-in-law to the house of Ahab.
28 He went with Joram the son of Ahab to make war against (AI)Hazael king of Syria at (AJ)Ramoth-gilead, and the Syrians wounded Joram. 29 (AK)And King Joram returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds that the Syrians had given him at (AL)Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria. And (AM)Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick.

The Shunammite’s Land Restored
8 Now Elisha had said to the woman(A) whose son he had restored to life, “Go away with your family and stay for a while wherever you can, because the Lord has decreed a famine(B) in the land that will last seven years.”(C) 2 The woman proceeded to do as the man of God said. She and her family went away and stayed in the land of the Philistines seven years.
3 At the end of the seven years she came back from the land of the Philistines and went to appeal to the king for her house and land. 4 The king was talking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, and had said, “Tell me about all the great things Elisha has done.” 5 Just as Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had restored(D) the dead to life, the woman whose son Elisha had brought back to life came to appeal to the king for her house and land.
Gehazi said, “This is the woman, my lord the king, and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life.” 6 The king asked the woman about it, and she told him.
Then he assigned an official to her case and said to him, “Give back everything that belonged to her, including all the income from her land from the day she left the country until now.”
Hazael Murders Ben-Hadad
7 Elisha went to Damascus,(E) and Ben-Hadad(F) king of Aram was ill. When the king was told, “The man of God has come all the way up here,” 8 he said to Hazael,(G) “Take a gift(H) with you and go to meet the man of God. Consult(I) the Lord through him; ask him, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”
9 Hazael went to meet Elisha, taking with him as a gift forty camel-loads of all the finest wares of Damascus. He went in and stood before him, and said, “Your son Ben-Hadad king of Aram has sent me to ask, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”
10 Elisha answered, “Go and say to him, ‘You will certainly recover.’(J) Nevertheless,[a] the Lord has revealed to me that he will in fact die.” 11 He stared at him with a fixed gaze until Hazael was embarrassed.(K) Then the man of God began to weep.(L)
12 “Why is my lord weeping?” asked Hazael.
“Because I know the harm(M) you will do to the Israelites,” he answered. “You will set fire to their fortified places, kill their young men with the sword, dash(N) their little children(O) to the ground, and rip open(P) their pregnant women.”
13 Hazael said, “How could your servant, a mere dog,(Q) accomplish such a feat?”
“The Lord has shown me that you will become king(R) of Aram,” answered Elisha.
14 Then Hazael left Elisha and returned to his master. When Ben-Hadad asked, “What did Elisha say to you?” Hazael replied, “He told me that you would certainly recover.” 15 But the next day he took a thick cloth, soaked it in water and spread it over the king’s face, so that he died.(S) Then Hazael succeeded him as king.
Jehoram King of Judah(T)
16 In the fifth year of Joram(U) son of Ahab king of Israel, when Jehoshaphat was king of Judah, Jehoram(V) son of Jehoshaphat began his reign as king of Judah. 17 He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. 18 He followed the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for he married a daughter(W) of Ahab. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord. 19 Nevertheless, for the sake of his servant David, the Lord was not willing to destroy(X) Judah. He had promised to maintain a lamp(Y) for David and his descendants forever.
20 In the time of Jehoram, Edom rebelled against Judah and set up its own king.(Z) 21 So Jehoram[b] went to Zair with all his chariots. The Edomites surrounded him and his chariot commanders, but he rose up and broke through by night; his army, however, fled back home. 22 To this day Edom has been in rebellion(AA) against Judah. Libnah(AB) revolted at the same time.
23 As for the other events of Jehoram’s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 24 Jehoram rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. And Ahaziah his son succeeded him as king.
Ahaziah King of Judah(AC)
25 In the twelfth(AD) year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign. 26 Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem one year. His mother’s name was Athaliah,(AE) a granddaughter of Omri(AF) king of Israel. 27 He followed the ways of the house of Ahab(AG) and did evil(AH) in the eyes of the Lord, as the house of Ahab had done, for he was related by marriage to Ahab’s family.
28 Ahaziah went with Joram son of Ahab to war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth Gilead.(AI) The Arameans wounded Joram; 29 so King Joram returned to Jezreel(AJ) to recover from the wounds the Arameans had inflicted on him at Ramoth[c] in his battle with Hazael(AK) king of Aram.
Then Ahaziah(AL) son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to Jezreel to see Joram son of Ahab, because he had been wounded.

8 Elisée dit à la femme dont il avait fait revivre le fils: Lève-toi, va-t’en, toi et ta maison, et séjourne où tu pourras; car l’Eternel appelle la famine, et même elle vient sur le pays pour sept années. 2 La femme se leva, et elle fit selon la parole de l’homme de Dieu: elle s’en alla, elle et sa maison, et séjourna sept ans au pays des Philistins. 3 Au bout des sept ans, la femme revint du pays des Philistins, et elle alla implorer le roi au sujet de sa maison et de son champ. 4 Le roi s’entretenait avec Guéhazi, serviteur de l’homme de Dieu, et il disait: Raconte-moi, je te prie, toutes les grandes choses qu’Elisée a faites. 5 Et pendant qu’il racontait au roi comment Elisée avait rendu la vie à un mort, la femme dont Elisée avait fait revivre le fils vint implorer le roi au sujet de sa maison et de son champ. Guéhazi dit: O roi, mon seigneur, voici la femme, et voici son fils qu’Elisée a fait revivre. 6 Le roi interrogea la femme, et elle lui fit le récit. Puis le roi lui donna un eunuque, auquel il dit: Fais restituer tout ce qui appartient à cette femme, avec tous les revenus du champ, depuis le jour où elle a quitté le pays jusqu’à maintenant.
Elisée prédit le règne d’Hazaël sur la Syrie
7 Elisée se rendit à Damas. Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, était malade; et on l’avertit, en disant: L’homme de Dieu est arrivé ici. 8 Le roi dit à Hazaël: Prends avec toi un présent, et va au-devant de l’homme de Dieu; consulte par lui l’Eternel, en disant: Guérirai-je de cette maladie? 9 Hazaël alla au-devant d’Elisée, prenant avec lui un présent, tout ce qu’il y avait de meilleur à Damas, la charge de quarante chameaux. Lorsqu’il fut arrivé, il se présenta à lui, et dit: Ton fils Ben-Hadad, roi de Syrie, m’envoie vers toi pour dire: Guérirai-je de cette maladie? 10 Elisée lui répondit: Va, dis-lui: Tu guériras! Mais l’Eternel m’a révélé qu’il mourra. 11 L’homme de Dieu arrêta son regard sur Hazaël, et le fixa longtemps, puis il pleura. 12 Hazaël dit: Pourquoi mon seigneur pleure-t-il? Et Elisée répondit: Parce que je sais le mal que tu feras aux enfants d’Israël; tu mettras le feu à leurs villes fortes, tu tueras avec l’épée leurs jeunes gens, tu écraseras leurs petits enfants, et tu fendras le ventre de leurs femmes enceintes. 13 Hazaël dit: Mais qu’est-ce que ton serviteur, ce chien, pour faire de si grandes choses? Et Elisée dit: L’Eternel m’a révélé que tu seras roi de Syrie. 14 Hazaël quitta Elisée, et revint auprès de son maître, qui lui dit: Que t’a dit Elisée? Et il répondit: Il m’a dit: Tu guériras! 15 Le lendemain, Hazaël prit une couverture, qu’il plongea dans l’eau, et il l’étendit sur le visage du roi, qui mourut. Et Hazaël régna à sa place.
Joram, roi de Juda
16 La cinquième année de Joram, fils d’Achab, roi d’Israël, Joram, fils de Josaphat, roi de Juda, régna. 17 Il avait trente-deux ans lorsqu’il devint roi, et il régna huit ans à Jérusalem.
18 Il marcha dans la voie des rois d’Israël, comme avait fait la maison d’Achab, car il avait pour femme une fille d’Achab, et il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux de l’Eternel. 19 Mais l’Eternel ne voulut point détruire Juda, à cause de David, son serviteur, selon la promesse qu’il lui avait faite de lui donner toujours une lampe parmi ses fils.
20 De son temps, Edom se révolta contre l’autorité de Juda, et se donna un roi. 21 Joram passa à Tsaïr, avec tous ses chars; s’étant levé de nuit, il battit les Edomites qui l’entouraient et les chefs des chars, et le peuple s’enfuit dans ses tentes. 22 La rébellion d’Edom contre l’autorité de Juda a duré jusqu’à ce jour. Libna se révolta aussi dans le même temps.
23 Le reste des actions de Joram, et tout ce qu’il a fait, cela n’est-il pas écrit dans le livre des Chroniques des rois de Juda?
24 Joram se coucha avec ses pères, et il fut enterré avec ses pères dans la ville de David. Et Achazia, son fils, régna à sa place.
Achazia, roi de Juda
25 La douzième année de Joram, fils d’Achab, roi d’Israël, Achazia, fils de Joram, roi de Juda, régna. 26 Achazia avait vingt-deux ans lorsqu’il devint roi, et il régna un an à Jérusalem. Sa mère s’appelait Athalie, fille[a] d’Omri, roi d’Israël.
27 Il marcha dans la voie de la maison d’Achab, et il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux de l’Eternel, comme la maison d’Achab, car il était allié par mariage à la maison d’Achab.
28 Il alla avec Joram, fils d’Achab, à la guerre contre Hazaël, roi de Syrie, à Ramoth en Galaad. Et les Syriens blessèrent Joram. 29 Le roi Joram s’en retourna pour se faire guérir à Jizreel des blessures que les Syriens lui avaient faites à Rama, lorsqu’il se battait contre Hazaël, roi de Syrie. Achazia, fils de Joram, roi de Juda, descendit pour voir Joram, fils d’Achab, à Jizreel, parce qu’il était malade.
