Athaliah Reigns over Judah

11 (A)Now Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son had died. So she rose and caused all the royal seed to perish. But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, (B)took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him from among the king’s sons who were being put to death, and put him and his nurse in the bedroom. So they hid him from Athaliah, and he was not put to death. So he was hidden away with her in the house of Yahweh six years, while Athaliah was reigning over the land.

(C)Now in the seventh year Jehoiada sent for and took the commanders of hundreds of (D)the Carites and of the [a]guard, and brought them to him in the house of Yahweh. Then he cut a covenant with them and had them swear in the house of Yahweh, and showed them the king’s son. And he commanded them, saying, “This is the thing that you shall do: (E)one-third of you, who come in on the sabbath and keep watch over the king’s house (one-third also shall be at the gate Sur, and one-third at the gate behind the [b]guards), [c]shall keep watch over the house for defense. And two parts of you, even all who go out on the sabbath, shall also keep watch over the house of Yahweh for the king. And you shall surround the king, each with his weapons in his hand; and whoever comes within the ranks shall be put to death. And (F)be with the king when he goes out and when he comes in.”

So the commanders of hundreds (G)did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded. And each one of them took his men who were to come in on the sabbath, with those who were to go out on the sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest. 10 (H)Then the priest gave to the commanders of hundreds the spears and small shields that had been King David’s, which were in the house of Yahweh. 11 And the [d]guards stood each with his weapons in his hand, from the right [e]side of the house to the left [f]side of the house, by the altar and by the house, around the king. 12 Then he brought the king’s son out and (I)put the crown on him and gave him (J)the testimony; and they made him king and anointed him, and they clapped their hands and said, “(K)Long live the king!”

13 (L)Then Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, and she came to the people in the house of Yahweh. 14 And she looked, and behold, the king was standing (M)by the pillar, according to the custom, with the commanders and the [g]trumpeters beside the king; and (N)all the people of the land were glad and blew trumpets. Then Athaliah (O)tore her clothes and cried, “(P)Treason! Treason!” 15 And Jehoiada the priest commanded the commanders of hundreds who were appointed over the military force and said to them, “Bring her out [h]between the ranks, and whoever follows her put to death with the sword.” For the priest said, “Let her not be put to death in the house of Yahweh.” 16 So they [i]laid hands on her, and she arrived at the horses’ entrance of the king’s house and was (Q)put to death there.

17 Then (R)Jehoiada cut a covenant between Yahweh and the king and the people, that they would be the people of Yahweh, also (S)between the king and the people. 18 And all the people of the land came to (T)the house of Baal and tore it down; (U)his altars and his images they broke in pieces thoroughly, and they (V)killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed [j]overseers over the house of Yahweh. 19 And he took the commanders of hundreds and the (W)Carites and the [k]guards and all the people of the land; and they brought the king down from the house of Yahweh, and came by the way of (X)the gate of the [l]guards to the king’s house. And he sat on the throne of the kings. 20 So (Y)all the people of the land were glad, and the city was quiet. For they had put Athaliah to death with the sword at the king’s house.

21 [m](Z)Jehoash was seven years old when he became king.

11 1 Athaliah putteth to death all the King’s sons, except Joash the son of Ahaziah. 4 Joash is appointed King. 15 Jehoiada causeth Athaliah to be slain. 17 He maketh a covenant between God and the people. 18 Baal and his priests are destroyed.

Then (A)Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah when she saw that her son was dead, she arose, and destroyed all the [a]King’s seed.

But Jehosheba the daughter of king Joram, and sister to Ahaziah [b]took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the King’s sons that should be slain, both him and his nurse, keeping them in [c]the bedchamber, and they hid him from Athaliah, so that he was not slain.

And he was with her hid in the house of the Lord six years, and Athaliah did reign over the land.

(B)And the seventh year [d]Jehoiada sent and took the captains over hundreds, with other captains and them of the guard, and caused them to come unto him into the house of the Lord, and made a covenant with them, and took an oath of them in the house of the Lord, and showed them the King’s son.

And he commanded them, saying, This is it that ye must do, The third part of [e]you, that cometh on the Sabbath, shall [f]ward toward the King’s house:

And another third part in the gate of [g]Sur: and another third part in the gate behind them of the guard: and ye shall keep watch [h]in the house of Massah.

And two parts of you, that is, all that [i]go out on the Sabbath day, shall keep the watch of the house of the Lord about the king.

And ye shall compass the King round about, every man with his weapon in his hand, and whosoever cometh within the ranges, let him be slain: be you with the King, as he goeth out and in.

¶ And the captains of the hundreds did according to all that Jehoiada the Priest commanded, and they took every man of his men that entered into their charge on the Sabbath, with them that went out of it on the [j]Sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the Priest.

10 And the [k]Priest gave to the captains of hundreds the spears and the shields that were King David’s, and were in the house of the Lord.

11 And the guard stood, every man with his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side, about the altar and about the house, round about the King.

12 Then he brought out [l]the king’s son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him [m]the Testimony, and they made him king: also they anointed him, and clapped their hands, and said, God save the King.

13 ¶ And when Athaliah heard the noise of the running of the people, she came into the people in the house of the Lord.

14 And when she looked, behold, the King stood by a [n]pillar, as the manner was, and the princes and the trumpeters by the King, and all the people of the land rejoiced, and blew with trumpets. Then Athaliah rent her clothes, and cried, Treason, treason.

15 But Jehoiada the Priest commanded the captains of the hundreds that had the rule of the host, and said unto them, Have her [o]forth of the ranges, and he that [p]followeth her, let him die by the sword: for the Priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the Lord.

16 Then they laid hands on her, and she went by the way, by the which the horses go to the house of the King, and there was she slain.

17 And Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord, [q]and the King and the people, that they should be the Lord’s people: likewise between the [r]King and the people.

18 Then all the people of the land went into the house of Baal, and destroyed it with his altars, and his images brake they down courageously, and slew Mattan the Priest of Baal before the [s]altars: and the [t]Priest set a guard over the house of the Lord.

19 Then he took the captains of hundreds, and the other captains, and the guard, and all the people of the land: and they brought the King from the house of the Lord, and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the King’s house: and he sat him down on the throne of the kings.

20 And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was in quiet: [u]for they had slain Athaliah with the sword beside the king’s house.

21 Seven years old was Jehoash when he began to reign.
