Families of Ahab and Ahaziah Killed
10 Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria to the officers and elders of Jezreel and to the guardians of the sons of Ahab. Jehu said, 2 “You have your master’s sons with you, and you have chariots, horses, a city with strong walls, and weapons. When you get this letter, 3 choose the best and most worthy person among your master’s sons, and make him king. Then fight for your master’s family.”
4 But the officers and leaders of Jezreel were frightened. They said, “Two kings could not stand up to Jehu, so how can we?”
5 The palace manager, the city governor, the leaders, and the guardians sent a message to Jehu. “We are your servants,” they said. “We will do everything you tell us to do. We won’t make any man king, so do whatever you think is best.”
6 Then Jehu wrote a second letter, saying, “If you are on my side and will obey me, cut off the heads of your master’s sons and come to me at Jezreel tomorrow about this time.”
Now the seventy sons of the king’s family were with the leading men of the city who were their guardians. 7 When the leaders received the letter, they took the king’s sons and killed all seventy of them. They put their heads in baskets and sent them to Jehu at Jezreel. 8 The messenger came to Jehu and told him, “They have brought the heads of the king’s sons.”
Then Jehu said, “Lay the heads in two piles at the city gate until morning.”
9 In the morning, Jehu went out and stood before the people and said to them, “You are innocent. Look, I made plans against my master and killed him. But who killed all these? 10 You should know that everything the Lord said about Ahab’s family will come true. The Lord has spoken through his servant Elijah, and the Lord has done what he said.” 11 So Jehu killed everyone of Ahab’s family in Jezreel who was still alive. He also killed all Ahab’s leading men, close friends, and priests. No one who had helped Ahab was left alive.
12 Then Jehu left and went to Samaria by way of the road to Beth Eked of the Shepherds. 13 There Jehu met some relatives of Ahaziah king of Judah. Jehu asked, “Who are you?”
They answered, “We are relatives of Ahaziah. We have come down to get revenge for the families of the king and the king’s mother.”
14 Then Jehu said, “Take them alive!” So they captured Ahaziah’s relatives alive and killed them at the well near Beth Eked—forty-two of them. Jehu did not leave anyone alive.
15 After Jehu left there, he met Jehonadab son of Recab, who was also on his way to meet Jehu. Jehu greeted him and said, “Are you as good a friend to me as I am to you?”
Jehonadab answered, “Yes, I am.”
Jehu said, “If you are, then give me your hand.” So Jehonadab gave him his hand, and Jehu pulled him into the chariot. 16 “Come with me,” Jehu said. “You can see how strong my feelings are for the Lord.” So Jehu had Jehonadab ride in his chariot.
17 When Jehu came to Samaria, he killed all of Ahab’s family in Samaria. He destroyed all those who were left, just as the Lord had told Elijah it would happen.
Baal Worshipers Killed
18 Then Jehu gathered all the people together and said to them, “Ahab served Baal a little, but Jehu will serve Baal much. 19 Now call for me all Baal’s prophets and priests and all the people who worship Baal. Don’t let anyone miss this meeting, because I have a great sacrifice for Baal. Anyone who is not there will not live.” But Jehu was tricking them so he could destroy the worshipers of Baal. 20 He said, “Prepare a holy meeting for Baal.” So they announced the meeting. 21 Then Jehu sent word through all Israel, and all the worshipers of Baal came; not one stayed home. They came into the temple of Baal, and the temple was filled from one side to the other.
22 Jehu said to the man who kept the robes, “Bring out robes for all the worshipers of Baal.” After he brought out robes for them, 23 Jehu and Jehonadab son of Recab went into the temple of Baal. Jehu said to the worshipers of Baal, “Look around, and make sure there are no servants of the Lord with you. Be sure there are only worshipers of Baal.” 24 Then the worshipers of Baal went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings.
Jehu had eighty men waiting outside. He had told them, “Don’t let anyone escape. If you do, you must pay with your own life.”
25 As soon as Jehu finished offering the burnt offering, he ordered the guards and the captains, “Go in and kill the worshipers of Baal. Don’t let anyone come out.” So the guards and captains killed the worshipers of Baal with the sword and threw their bodies out. Then they went to the inner rooms of the temple 26 and brought out the pillars of the temple of Baal and burned them. 27 They tore down the stone pillar of Baal, as well as the temple of Baal. And they made it into a sewage pit, as it is today.
28 So Jehu destroyed Baal worship in Israel, 29 but he did not stop doing the sins Jeroboam son of Nebat had done. Jeroboam had led Israel to sin by worshiping the golden calves in Bethel and Dan.
30 The Lord said to Jehu, “You have done well in obeying what I said was right. You have done to the family of Ahab as I wanted. Because of this, your descendants as far as your great-great-grandchildren will be kings of Israel.” 31 But Jehu was not careful to follow the teachings of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not stop doing the same sins Jeroboam had done, by which he had led Israel to sin.
32 At that time the Lord began to make Israel smaller. Hazael defeated the Israelites in all the land of Israel, 33 taking all the land of the Jordan known as the land of Gilead. (It was the region of Gad, Reuben, and Manasseh.) He took land from Aroer by the Arnon Ravine through Gilead to Bashan.
34 The other things Jehu did—everything he did and all his victories—are recorded in the book of the history of the kings of Israel. 35 Jehu died and was buried in Samaria, and his son Jehoahaz became king in his place. 36 Jehu was king over Israel in Samaria for twenty-eight years.

Ahab’s Family Killed
10 Now there were in Samaria(A) seventy sons(B) of the house of Ahab. So Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria: to the officials of Jezreel,[a](C) to the elders and to the guardians(D) of Ahab’s children. He said, 2 “You have your master’s sons with you and you have chariots and horses, a fortified city and weapons. Now as soon as this letter reaches you, 3 choose the best and most worthy of your master’s sons and set him on his father’s throne. Then fight for your master’s house.”
4 But they were terrified and said, “If two kings could not resist him, how can we?”
5 So the palace administrator, the city governor, the elders and the guardians sent this message to Jehu: “We are your servants(E) and we will do anything you say. We will not appoint anyone as king; you do whatever you think best.”
6 Then Jehu wrote them a second letter, saying, “If you are on my side and will obey me, take the heads of your master’s sons and come to me in Jezreel by this time tomorrow.”
Now the royal princes, seventy of them, were with the leading men of the city, who were rearing them. 7 When the letter arrived, these men took the princes and slaughtered all seventy(F) of them. They put their heads(G) in baskets and sent them to Jehu in Jezreel. 8 When the messenger arrived, he told Jehu, “They have brought the heads of the princes.”
Then Jehu ordered, “Put them in two piles at the entrance of the city gate until morning.”
9 The next morning Jehu went out. He stood before all the people and said, “You are innocent. It was I who conspired against my master and killed him, but who killed all these? 10 Know, then, that not a word the Lord has spoken against the house of Ahab will fail. The Lord has done what he announced(H) through his servant Elijah.”(I) 11 So Jehu(J) killed everyone in Jezreel who remained of the house of Ahab, as well as all his chief men, his close friends and his priests, leaving him no survivor.(K)
12 Jehu then set out and went toward Samaria. At Beth Eked of the Shepherds, 13 he met some relatives of Ahaziah king of Judah and asked, “Who are you?”
They said, “We are relatives of Ahaziah,(L) and we have come down to greet the families of the king and of the queen mother.(M)”
14 “Take them alive!” he ordered. So they took them alive and slaughtered them by the well of Beth Eked—forty-two of them. He left no survivor.(N)
15 After he left there, he came upon Jehonadab(O) son of Rekab,(P) who was on his way to meet him. Jehu greeted him and said, “Are you in accord with me, as I am with you?”
“I am,” Jehonadab answered.
“If so,” said Jehu, “give me your hand.”(Q) So he did, and Jehu helped him up into the chariot. 16 Jehu said, “Come with me and see my zeal(R) for the Lord.” Then he had him ride along in his chariot.
17 When Jehu came to Samaria, he killed all who were left there of Ahab’s family;(S) he destroyed them, according to the word of the Lord spoken to Elijah.
Servants of Baal Killed
18 Then Jehu brought all the people together and said to them, “Ahab served(T) Baal a little; Jehu will serve him much. 19 Now summon(U) all the prophets of Baal, all his servants and all his priests. See that no one is missing, because I am going to hold a great sacrifice for Baal. Anyone who fails to come will no longer live.” But Jehu was acting deceptively in order to destroy the servants of Baal.
20 Jehu said, “Call an assembly(V) in honor of Baal.” So they proclaimed it. 21 Then he sent word throughout Israel, and all the servants of Baal came; not one stayed away. They crowded into the temple of Baal until it was full from one end to the other. 22 And Jehu said to the keeper of the wardrobe, “Bring robes for all the servants of Baal.” So he brought out robes for them.
23 Then Jehu and Jehonadab son of Rekab went into the temple of Baal. Jehu said to the servants of Baal, “Look around and see that no one who serves the Lord is here with you—only servants of Baal.” 24 So they went in to make sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had posted eighty men outside with this warning: “If one of you lets any of the men I am placing in your hands escape, it will be your life for his life.”(W)
25 As soon as Jehu had finished making the burnt offering, he ordered the guards and officers: “Go in and kill(X) them; let no one escape.”(Y) So they cut them down with the sword. The guards and officers threw the bodies out and then entered the inner shrine of the temple of Baal. 26 They brought the sacred stone(Z) out of the temple of Baal and burned it. 27 They demolished the sacred stone of Baal and tore down the temple(AA) of Baal, and people have used it for a latrine to this day.
28 So Jehu(AB) destroyed Baal worship in Israel. 29 However, he did not turn away from the sins(AC) of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit—the worship of the golden calves(AD) at Bethel(AE) and Dan.
30 The Lord said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in accomplishing what is right in my eyes and have done to the house of Ahab all I had in mind to do, your descendants will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.”(AF) 31 Yet Jehu was not careful(AG) to keep the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins(AH) of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit.
32 In those days the Lord began to reduce(AI) the size of Israel. Hazael(AJ) overpowered the Israelites throughout their territory 33 east of the Jordan in all the land of Gilead (the region of Gad, Reuben and Manasseh), from Aroer(AK) by the Arnon(AL) Gorge through Gilead to Bashan.
34 As for the other events of Jehu’s reign, all he did, and all his achievements, are they not written in the book of the annals(AM) of the kings of Israel?
35 Jehu rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son succeeded him as king. 36 The time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.

Jehu Slaughters Ahab's Descendants
10 Now Ahab had seventy sons in (A)Samaria. So Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria, to the rulers of the city,[a] to the elders, and to (B)the guardians of the sons[b] of Ahab, saying, 2 “Now then, as soon as this letter comes to you, seeing your master's sons are with you, and there are with you chariots and horses, fortified cities also, and weapons, 3 select the best and fittest of your master's sons and set him on his father's throne and fight for your master's house.” 4 But they were exceedingly afraid and said, “Behold, the two kings could not stand before him. How then can we stand?” 5 So he who was over the palace, and he who was over the city, together with the elders and the guardians, sent to Jehu, saying, (C)“We are your servants, and we will do all that you tell us. We will not make anyone king. Do whatever is good in your eyes.” 6 Then he wrote to them a second letter, saying, “If you are on my side, and if you are ready to obey me, take the heads of your master's sons and come to me at Jezreel tomorrow at this time.” Now the king's sons, seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, (D)who were bringing them up. 7 And as soon as the letter came to them, they took the king's sons (E)and slaughtered them, seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets and sent them to him at Jezreel. 8 When the messenger came and told him, “They have brought the heads of the king's sons,” he said, “Lay them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until the morning.” 9 Then in the morning, when he went out, he stood and said to all the people, “You are innocent. 12 Then he set out and went to Samaria. On the way, when he was at Beth-eked of the Shepherds, 13 Jehu met (I)the relatives of Ahaziah king of Judah, and he said, “Who are you?” And they answered, “We are the relatives of Ahaziah, and we came down to visit the royal princes and the sons of the queen mother.” 14 He said, “Take them alive.” And they took them alive and slaughtered them at the pit of Beth-eked, forty-two persons, and he spared none of them.
15 And when he departed from there, he met (J)Jehonadab the son of (K)Rechab coming to meet him. And he greeted him and said to him, “Is your heart true to my heart as mine is to yours?” And Jehonadab answered, “It is.” Jehu said,[c] “If it is, (L)give me your hand.” So he gave him his hand. And Jehu took him up with him into the chariot. 16 And he said, “Come with me, and see (M)my zeal for the Lord.” So he[d] had him ride in his chariot. 17 And when he came to Samaria, (N)he struck down all who remained to Ahab in Samaria, till he had wiped them out, according to the word of the Lord (O)that he spoke to Elijah.
Jehu Strikes Down the Prophets of Baal
18 Then Jehu assembled all the people and said to them, (P)“Ahab served Baal a little, but Jehu will serve him much. 19 Now therefore call to me all the (Q)prophets of Baal, all his worshipers and all his priests. Let none be missing, for I have a great sacrifice to offer to Baal. Whoever is missing shall not live.” But Jehu did it with cunning in order to destroy the worshipers of Baal. 20 And Jehu ordered, (R)“Sanctify (S)a solemn assembly for Baal.” So (T)they proclaimed it. 21 And Jehu sent throughout all Israel, and all the worshipers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left who did not come. And they entered (U)the house of Baal, and the house of Baal was filled from one end to the other. 22 He said to him who was in charge of the wardrobe, “Bring out the vestments for all the worshipers of Baal.” So he brought out the vestments for them. 23 Then Jehu went into the house of Baal with Jehonadab the son of Rechab, and he said to the worshipers of Baal, “Search, and see that there is no servant of the Lord here among you, but only the worshipers of Baal.” 24 Then they[e] went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings.
Now Jehu had stationed eighty men outside and said, “The man who allows any of those whom I give into your hands to escape (V)shall forfeit his life.” 25 So as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, Jehu said to the guard and to the officers, (W)“Go in and strike them down; let not a man escape.” So when they put them to the sword, the guard and the officers cast them out and went into the inner room of the house of Baal, 26 and they brought out the (X)pillar that was in (Y)the house of Baal and burned it. 27 And they demolished the (Z)pillar of Baal, and demolished the house of Baal, and made it (AA)a latrine to this day.
Jehu Reigns in Israel
28 Thus Jehu wiped out Baal from Israel. 29 But Jehu did not turn aside from (AB)the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, (AC)which he made Israel to sin—that is, the golden calves that were in Bethel and in Dan. 30 And the Lord said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in my eyes, and have done to the house of Ahab according to all that was in my heart, (AD)your sons of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.” 31 But Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. (AE)He did not turn from the sins of Jeroboam, which he made Israel to sin.
32 In those days the Lord (AF)began to cut off parts of Israel. (AG)Hazael defeated them throughout the territory of Israel: 33 from the Jordan eastward, all the land of Gilead, the Gadites, and the Reubenites, and the Manassites, from (AH)Aroer, which is by the Valley of the Arnon, that is, (AI)Gilead and Bashan. 34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehu and all that he did, and all his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 35 So Jehu slept with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son reigned in his place. 36 The time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.

2 – Как только вы получите это письмо, то раз с вами сыновья вашего господина и у вас есть колесницы и кони, укреплённый город и оружие, 3 выберите лучшего и достойнейшего из сыновей вашего господина и посадите его на отцовский престол. А затем сражайтесь за дом господина своего.
4 Но они очень испугались и сказали:
– Если ему не смогли противостоять два царя, то как можем мы?
5 И распорядитель дворца, правитель города, старейшины и воспитатели послали сказать Иеву:
– Мы твои рабы и сделаем всё, что ты скажешь. Мы не будем никого ставить царём, делай всё, как считаешь нужным.
6 Тогда Иеву написал им второе письмо, говоря:
– Если вы на моей стороне и послушны мне, возьмите головы сыновей своего господина и завтра к этому времени приходите ко мне в Изреель.
А царские сыновья, семьдесят человек, были со знатнейшими людьми города, которым было доверено их воспитание. 7 Когда пришло письмо, эти люди взяли царских сыновей и закололи их всех. Они положили их головы в корзины и послали к Иеву в Изреель. 8 Когда посланец прибыл, он доложил Иеву:
– Принесли головы царских сыновей.
Иеву приказал:
– Сложите их в две кучи у входа в городские ворота до утра.
9 На следующее утро Иеву вышел, встал перед народом и сказал:
– Вы невиновны. Это я составил заговор против моего господина и убил его, но кто убил вот этих? 10 Итак, знайте, что ни одно слово, которое Вечный изрёк против дома Ахава, не осталось неисполненным. Вечный сделал то, что обещал через Своего раба Ильяса.[b]
11 И перебил Иеву в Изрееле всех, кто ещё оставался от дома Ахава, вместе со всеми его приближёнными, близкими друзьями и священнослужителями, никого не оставив в живых.
12 После этого Иеву тронулся в путь к Самарии. В пастушеском Бет-Екеде 13 он встретил родственников Охозии, царя Иудеи, и спросил:

– Мы родственники Охозии и вышли приветствовать сыновей царя и сыновей царицы-матери.
14 – Взять их живыми! – приказал он.
Их взяли живыми и закололи – сорок два человека, при колодце у Бет-Екеда. Иеву не оставил никого из них в живых.
15 Уйдя оттуда, он встретил Ионадава, сына Рехава[c], который шёл ему навстречу. Иеву приветствовал его и сказал:
– Так же ли верен ты мне, как я тебе?
– Да, – ответил Ионадав.
– А если да, то дай мне руку, – сказал Иеву.
Он дал ему руку, и Иеву помог ему взойти на колесницу. 16 Иеву сказал:
– Едем со мной. Ты увидишь мою ревность о Вечном, – и повёз его в своей колеснице.
17 Когда Иеву прибыл в Самарию, он перебил всех, кто оставался там от дома Ахава. Он истребил их по слову, которое Вечный сказал Ильясу.
Истребление служителей Баала
18 После этого Иеву собрал весь народ и сказал им:
– Ахав служил Баалу мало – я буду служить ему больше. 19 Итак, позовите ко мне всех пророков Баала, всех его служителей и всех его жрецов. Смотрите, чтобы пришли все до одного, потому что я хочу принести Баалу великую жертву. А кто не придёт, тому не жить.
Но Иеву действовал с хитростью, желая истребить служителей Баала. 20 Иеву сказал:
– Объявите праздничное собрание в честь Баала.
И люди возвестили о нём. 21 Иеву послал весть по всему Исраилу, и все служители Баала явились, не осталось ни одного, кто бы не пришёл. Они собирались в храме Баала, пока он не наполнился до предела. 22 Иеву сказал хранителю одежд:
– Принеси специальные одежды для всех служителей Баала, – и тот вынес для них одежды.
23 Затем Иеву и Ионадав, сын Рехава, вошли в храм Баала. Иеву сказал служителям Баала:
– Поищите и посмотрите, чтобы с вами здесь не было служителей Вечного, а только служители Баала.
24 И они вошли, чтобы принести жертвы и всесожжения. А Иеву расставил снаружи восемьдесят человек, предупредив их:

28 Так Иеву искоренил в Исраиле почитание Баала. 29 Но он не отвернулся от грехов Иеровоама, сына Невата, к которым тот склонил Исраил, – от поклонения золотым тельцам Вефиля и Дана.
30 Вечный сказал Иеву:
– Так как ты поступил хорошо, совершив то, что правильно в Моих глазах, и сделал с домом Ахава всё, как Я хотел, твои потомки до четвёртого поколения будут сидеть на престоле Исраила.
31 Но Иеву не следил за тем, чтобы исполнять Закон Вечного, Бога Исраила, от всего сердца. Он не отвернулся от грехов Иеровоама, к которым тот склонил Исраил.
Конец правления Иеву
32 В те дни Вечный начал уменьшать территорию Исраила. Хазаил разбил исраильтян по всей их земле 33 к востоку от Иордана, всю землю Галаад (уделы Гада, Рувима и Манассы), от города Ароера, что у реки Арнона, через Галаад до Башана.
34 Прочие события царствования Иеву, всё, что он сделал, и все его свершения записаны в «Книге летописей царей Исраила».
