³⁵ When the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites, he commanded them: “Do not worship^(A) any other gods or bow down to them, serve them or sacrifice to them.^(B)

¹⁰ I said to you, ‘I am the Lord your God; do not worship^(A) the gods of the Amorites,^(B) in whose land you live.’ But you have not listened to me.”

¹⁶ If you violate the covenant of the Lord your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from the good land he has given you.^(A)”

⁷ Do not associate with these nations that remain among you; do not invoke the names of their gods or swear^(A) by them. You must not serve them or bow down^(B) to them.

²³ Be careful not to forget the covenant^(A) of the Lord your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol^(B) in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden. ²⁴ For the Lord your God is a consuming fire,^(C) a jealous God.^(D)

²⁵ After you have had children and grandchildren and have lived in the land a long time—if you then become corrupt^(E) and make any kind of idol,^(F) doing evil^(G) in the eyes of the Lord your God and arousing his anger, ²⁶ I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses^(H) against you^(I) this day that you will quickly perish^(J) from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live there long but will certainly be destroyed. ²⁷ The Lord will scatter^(K) you among the peoples, and only a few of you will survive^(L) among the nations to which the Lord will drive you.

¹² Be careful not to make a treaty^(A) with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare^(B) among you. ¹³ Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and cut down their Asherah poles.^{[a](C) 14} Do not worship any other god,^(D) for the Lord, whose name^(E) is Jealous, is a jealous God.^(F)

¹⁵ “Be careful not to make a treaty^(G) with those who live in the land; for when they prostitute^(H) themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their sacrifices.^{(I) 16} And when you choose some of their daughters as wives^(J) for your sons and those daughters prostitute themselves to their gods,^(K) they will lead your sons to do the same.

¹⁷ “Do not make any idols.^(L)

⁶ But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant^(A) of which he is mediator^(B) is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.

⁷ For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another.^{(C) 8} But God found fault with the people and said^[a]:

¹³ By calling this covenant “new,”^(L) he has made the first one obsolete;^(M) and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.
