³¹ the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burned their children in the fire as sacrifices to Adrammelek^(A) and Anammelek, the gods of Sepharvaim.^(B)

Samaria Resettled

²⁴ The king of Assyria^(A) brought people from Babylon, Kuthah, Avva, Hamath and Sepharvaim^(B) and settled them in the towns of Samaria to replace the Israelites. They took over Samaria and lived in its towns.

¹⁷ They sacrificed^(A) their sons and daughters in the fire. They practiced divination and sought omens^(B) and sold^(C) themselves to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger.

³⁷ One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisrok, his sons Adrammelek^(A) and Sharezer killed him with the sword,^(B) and they escaped to the land of Ararat.^(C) And Esarhaddon^(D) his son succeeded him as king.

³¹ You must not worship the Lord your God in their way, because in worshiping their gods, they do all kinds of detestable things the Lord hates.^(A) They even burn their sons^(B) and daughters in the fire as sacrifices to their gods.^(C)

²⁸ Be careful to obey all these regulations I am giving you, so that it may always go well^(A) with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is good and right in the eyes of the Lord your God.

²¹ “‘Do not give any of your children^(A) to be sacrificed to Molek,^(B) for you must not profane the name of your God.^(C) I am the Lord.^(D)
