⁹ Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty with his fifty men. He went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill and said to him, “O man of God, the king says: Come down.”

¹³ He said, “Go and find where he is; I will send and seize him.” He was told, “He is in Dothan.”^{(A) 14} So he sent horses and chariots there and a great army; they came by night and surrounded the city.

³⁶ Others suffered mocking and flogging and even chains and imprisonment.^(A)

¹¹ But they were filled with fury and began discussing with one another what they might do to Jesus.

Jesus Chooses the Twelve Apostles

¹² Now during those days he went out to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God.^(A)

³² Let the Messiah,^[a] the King of Israel, come down from the cross now, so that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also taunted him.^(A)

²⁹ Those who passed by derided^[a] him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days,^(A)

⁴¹ In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking him, saying, ⁴² “He saved others; he cannot save himself.^[a] He is the King of Israel; let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him.^{(A) 43} He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he wants to, for he said, ‘I am God’s Son.’ ”^(B)

²⁹ and after twisting some thorns into a crown they put it on his head. They put a reed in his right hand and knelt before him and mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”^(A)

⁶⁸ saying, “Prophesy to us, you Messiah!^[a] Who is it that struck you?”

³ For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,^(A)
