1 From the Elder.[a]

To the chosen lady[b] and her children:

I love all of you in the truth,[c] and all those who know the truth love you. 2 We love you because of the truth that lives in us and will be with us forever.

3 Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ, will be with us in truth and love.

4 I was very happy to learn that some of your children are following the way of truth, as the Father commanded us. 5 And now, dear lady, this is not a new command but is the same command we have had from the beginning. I ask you that we all love each other. 6 And love means living the way God commanded us to live. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is this: Live a life of love.

7 Many false teachers are in the world now who do not confess that Jesus Christ came to earth as a human. Anyone who does not confess this is a false teacher and an enemy of Christ. 8 Be careful yourselves that you do not lose everything you[d] have worked for, but that you receive your full reward.

9 Anyone who goes beyond Christ’s teaching and does not continue to follow only his teaching does not have God. But whoever continues to follow the teaching of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If someone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not welcome or accept that person into your house. 11 If you welcome such a person, you share in the evil work.

12 I have many things to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to come to you and talk face to face so we can be full of joy. 13 The children of your chosen sister[e] greet you.

  1. 1 Elder “Elder” means an older person. It can also mean a special leader in the church (as in Titus 1:5).
  2. 1 lady This might mean a woman, or in this letter it might mean a church. If it is a church, then “her children” would be the people of the church.
  3. 1 truth The truth or “Good News” about Jesus Christ that joins all believers together.
  4. 8 you Some Greek copies read “we.”
  5. 13 sister Sister of the “lady” in verse 1. This might be another woman or another church.

4 我看见你的儿女中，有人照着我们从父领受的命令在真理中行事，我就非常欣慰。 5 夫人哪，我现在请求你，我们要彼此相爱。我写给你的，不是一条新命令，而是我们从起初就有的。 6 我们要照着他的命令行事，这就是爱。你们从起初所听见的那命令，就是要你们凭着爱心行事。 7 有许多欺骗人的已经在世上出现，他们否认耶稣基督是成了肉身来的；这就是那骗人的和敌基督的。 8 你们要小心，不要拆毁我们已经完成的工作，却要得着美满的赏赐。 9 凡越过基督的教训又不持守的，就没有　神；持守这教训的，就有父和子了。 10 如果有人到你们那里，不传这教训，你们就不要接待他到家里，也不要问候他； 11 因为问候他的，就在他的恶事上有分了。

To: The chosen lady and her children, whom I genuinely love, and not only I but also all who know the truth, 2 that is present in us and will be with us forever.

3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus[b] the Messiah,[c] the Father’s Son, in truth and love.

Living in the Truth

4 I was overjoyed to find some of your[d] children living truthfully, just as the Father has commanded us. 5 Dear lady, I am now requesting of you[e] that we all continue to love one another. It is not as though I am writing to give you[f] a new commandment, but one that we have had from the beginning. 6 And this is what demonstrates[g] love: that we live according to God’s[h] commandments. Just as you[i] have heard from the beginning what he commanded, you[j] must live by it.

Reject False Teachers

7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world. They refuse to acknowledge Jesus the Messiah[k] as having become human. Any such person is a deceiver and an antichrist. 8 See[l] to it that you[m] don’t destroy what we have[n] worked for, but that you[o] receive your[p] full reward. 9 Everyone who does not remain true to the teaching of the Messiah,[q] but goes beyond it, does not have God. The person who remains true to the teaching of the Messiah[r] has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you[s] but does not present his teachings,[t] do not receive[u] him into your house or even welcome[v] him, 11 because the one who welcomes him shares in his evil deeds.

Final Greeting

12 Although I have a great deal to write to you,[w] I would prefer not to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to come to you and talk face to face, so that our joy may be complete. 13 The children of your[x] chosen sister greet you.[y]
