Reaffirm Your Love

But I decided this [a]for my own sake, that I (A)would not come to you in sorrow again. For if I (B)cause you sorrow, who then will be the one making me glad but the one who is made sorrowful by me? This is the very thing I (C)wrote you, so that (D)when I came, I would not have sorrow from those who ought to make me rejoice; having (E)confidence in you all that my joy was the joy of you all. For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I (F)wrote to you with many tears; not so that you would be made sorrowful, but that you might know the love which I have especially for you.

But (G)if anyone has caused sorrow, he has caused sorrow not for me, but in some degree—[b]not to say too much—for all of you. Sufficient for such a person is (H)this punishment which was imposed by the majority, so that on the other hand, you should rather (I)forgive and comfort him, otherwise such a person might be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love for him. For to this end (J)I also wrote, so that I might [c](K)put you to the test, whether you are (L)obedient in all things. 10 But one whom you forgive anything, I also forgive; for indeed what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, I did so for your sakes (M)in the presence of Christ, 11 so that no advantage would be taken of us by (N)Satan, for (O)we are not ignorant of his schemes.

12 Now when I came to (P)Troas for the (Q)gospel of Christ and when a (R)door was opened for me in the Lord, 13 I (S)had no rest for my spirit, not finding (T)Titus my brother; but (U)saying goodbye to them, I went on to (V)Macedonia.

14 (W)But thanks be to God, who always (X)leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us reveals the (Y)fragrance of the (Z)knowledge of Him in every place. 15 For we are a (AA)fragrance of Christ to God among (AB)those who are being saved and among those who are perishing: 16 (AC)to the one an [d]aroma from death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life. And who is (AD)adequate for these things? 17 For we are not like the many, [e](AE)peddling the word of God, but (AF)as from sincerity, but as from God, we speak in Christ (AG)in the sight of God.

Ministers of a New Covenant

Are we beginning to (AH)commend ourselves again? Or do we need, as some, (AI)letters of commendation to you or from you? (AJ)You are our letter, written in our hearts, known and read by all people, revealing yourselves, that you are a letter of Christ, [f](AK)delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of (AL)the living God, not on (AM)tablets of stone but on (AN)tablets of [g](AO)human hearts.

Such is the (AP)confidence we have toward God through Christ. Not that we are adequate in ourselves so as to consider anything as having come from ourselves, but (AQ)our adequacy is from God, who also made us adequate as (AR)servants of a (AS)new covenant, not of (AT)the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but (AU)the Spirit gives life.

But if the (AV)ministry of death, engraved (AW)in letters on stones, came [h]with glory (AX)so that the sons of Israel could not look intently at the face of Moses because of the glory of his face, fading as it was, how will the ministry of the Spirit fail to be even more with glory? For if (AY)the ministry of condemnation has glory, much more does the (AZ)ministry of righteousness excel in glory. 10 For indeed what had glory in this case has no glory, because of the glory that surpasses it. 11 For if that which fades away was [i]with glory, much more that which remains is in glory.

12 (BA)Therefore, having such a hope, (BB)we use great boldness in our speech, 13 and we are not like Moses, (BC)who used to put a veil over his face so that the sons of Israel would not stare at the end of what was fading away. 14 But their minds were (BD)hardened; for until this very day at the (BE)reading of (BF)the old covenant the same veil [j]remains unlifted, because it is removed in Christ. 15 But to this day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their hearts; 16 (BG)but whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where (BH)the Spirit of the Lord is, (BI)there is freedom. 18 But we all, with unveiled faces, (BJ)looking as in a mirror at the (BK)glory of the Lord, are being (BL)transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from (BM)the Lord, the Spirit.

Paul’s Apostolic Ministry

Therefore, since we have this (BN)ministry, as we (BO)received mercy, we (BP)do not lose heart, but we have renounced the (BQ)things hidden because of shame, not walking in trickery nor (BR)distorting the word of God, but by the open proclamation of the truth (BS)commending ourselves to every person’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our (BT)gospel is (BU)veiled, it is veiled [k]to (BV)those who are perishing, in whose case (BW)the god of (BX)this [l]world has (BY)blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that [m]they will not see the (BZ)light of the gospel of the (CA)glory of Christ, who is the (CB)image of God. For we (CC)do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants [n]on account of Jesus. For God, who said, “(CD)Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has (CE)shone in our hearts to give the (CF)Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

But we have this treasure in [o](CG)earthen containers, so that the extraordinary greatness of (CH)the power will be of God and not from ourselves; we are (CI)afflicted in every way, but not (CJ)crushed; (CK)perplexed, but not despairing; (CL)persecuted, but not (CM)abandoned; (CN)struck down, but not destroyed; 10 (CO)always carrying around in the body the dying of Jesus, so that (CP)the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11 For we who live are constantly being handed over to death because of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our mortal flesh. 12 So death works in us, but life in you.

13 But having the same (CQ)spirit of faith, according to what is written: “(CR)I believed, therefore I spoke,” we also believe, therefore we also speak, 14 knowing that He who (CS)raised the Lord Jesus (CT)will also raise us with Jesus, and will (CU)present us with you. 15 For all things are (CV)for your sakes, so that grace, having [p](CW)spread to more and more people, will cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.

16 Therefore we (CX)do not lose heart, but though our outer person is decaying, yet our (CY)inner person is (CZ)being renewed day by day. 17 For our momentary, (DA)light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, 18 while we (DB)look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

The Temporal and Eternal

For we know that if our [q](DC)earthly (DD)tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house (DE)not made by hands, eternal in the heavens. For indeed, in this tent we (DF)groan, longing to be (DG)clothed with our [r]dwelling from heaven, since in fact after putting it on, we will not be found naked. For indeed, we who are in this tent (DH)groan, being burdened, because we do not want to be unclothed but to be (DI)clothed, so that what is (DJ)mortal will be swallowed up by life. Now He who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who (DK)gave us the Spirit as a [s]pledge.

Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that (DL)while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord— for (DM)we walk by faith, not by [t]sight— but we are of good courage and (DN)prefer rather to be absent from the body and (DO)to be at home with the Lord. Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be (DP)pleasing to Him. 10 For we must all appear before (DQ)the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive compensation for [u]his deeds done through the body, in accordance with what he has done, whether good or bad.

11 Therefore, knowing the (DR)fear of the Lord, we persuade people, but we are well known to God; and I hope that we are also (DS)well known in your consciences. 12 We are not commending ourselves to you (DT)again, but are giving you an (DU)opportunity to be proud of us, so that you will have an answer for those who take pride in appearance and not in heart. 13 For if we have (DV)lost our minds, it is for God; if we are of sound mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ (DW)controls us, having concluded this, that (DX)one died for all, therefore all died; 15 and He died for all, so that those who live would no longer (DY)live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose on their behalf.

16 Therefore from now on we recognize no one [v](DZ)by the flesh; even though we have known Christ by the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer. 17 Therefore if anyone is (EA)in Christ, this person is (EB)a new [w]creation; (EC)the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 18 Now (ED)all these things are from God, (EE)who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the (EF)ministry of reconciliation, 19 namely, that (EG)God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, (EH)not counting their wrongdoings against them, and [x]He has [y]committed to us the word of reconciliation.

20 Therefore, we are (EI)ambassadors for Christ, (EJ)as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be (EK)reconciled to God. 21 He made Him who (EL)knew no sin to be [z](EM)sin in our behalf, so that we might become the (EN)righteousness of God in Him.

Their Ministry Commended

And (EO)working together with Him, (EP)we also urge you not to receive (EQ)the grace of God in vain— for He says,

(ER)At a favorable time I listened to you,
And on a day of salvation I helped you.”

Behold, now is “a favorable time,” behold, now is “a day of salvation”— (ES)giving no reason for taking offense in anything, so that the ministry will not be discredited, but in everything (ET)commending ourselves as [aa](EU)servants of God, (EV)in much endurance, in afflictions, in hardships, in difficulties, in (EW)beatings, in imprisonments, in (EX)[ab]mob attacks, in labors, in sleeplessness, in (EY)hunger, in purity, in (EZ)knowledge, in (FA)patience, in kindness, in the (FB)Holy Spirit, in (FC)genuine love, in (FD)the word of truth, and in (FE)the power of God; by (FF)the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and the left, by glory and (FG)dishonor, by (FH)evil report and good report; regarded as (FI)deceivers and yet (FJ)true; as unknown and yet well known, as (FK)dying and yet behold, (FL)we are alive; as [ac]punished and yet not put to death, 10 as (FM)sorrowful yet always (FN)rejoicing, as (FO)poor yet making many rich, as (FP)having nothing and yet possessing (FQ)all things.

11 (FR)Our mouth [ad]has spoken freely to you, you Corinthians, our (FS)heart is opened wide. 12 You are not restrained [ae]by us, but (FT)you are restrained in your own [af]affections. 13 Now in the same way in (FU)exchange—I am speaking as to (FV)children—open wide your hearts to us, you as well.

14 (FW)Do not be [ag]mismatched with (FX)unbelievers; for what do righteousness and lawlessness (FY)share together, or what does light have in common with darkness? 15 Or what (FZ)harmony does Christ have with [ah]Belial, or [ai]what does a (GA)believer share with an (GB)unbeliever? 16 Or (GC)what agreement does [aj]the temple of God have with idols? For we are [ak](GD)the temple of (GE)the living God; just as God said,

(GF)I will (GG)dwell among them and (GH)walk among them;
And I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
17 (GI)Therefore, (GJ)come out from their midst and be separate,” says the Lord.
And do not touch what is unclean;
And I will welcome you.
18 (GK)And I will be a father to you,
And you shall be (GL)sons and daughters to Me,”
Says the Lord Almighty.

Paul Reveals His Heart

Therefore, having these promises, (GM)beloved, (GN)let’s cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

(GO)Make room for us in your hearts; we have wronged no one, we corrupted no one, we have taken advantage of no one. I do not speak to condemn you, for I have said (GP)before that you are (GQ)in our hearts, to die together and to live together. My (GR)confidence [al]in you is great; my (GS)boasting in your behalf is great. I am filled with (GT)comfort; I am overflowing with (GU)joy in all our affliction.

For even when we came into (GV)Macedonia our flesh had no rest, but we were (GW)afflicted on every side: (GX)conflicts on the outside, fears inside. But (GY)God, who comforts the [am]discouraged, (GZ)comforted us by the arrival of (HA)Titus; and not only by his arrival, but also by the comfort with which he was comforted among you, as he reported to us your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me; so that I rejoiced even more. For though I (HB)caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it—for I see that that letter caused you sorrow, though only for a while— I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to the point of repentance; for you were made sorrowful according to the will of God, so that you might not suffer loss in anything [an]through us. 10 For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a (HC)repentance [ao]without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death. 11 For behold what earnestness this very thing, this [ap]godly sorrow, has produced in you: what vindication of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what (HD)longing, what zeal, what (HE)punishment of wrong! In everything you (HF)demonstrated yourselves to be innocent in the matter. 12 So although (HG)I wrote to you, it was not for the sake of (HH)the offender nor for the sake of the one offended, but that your earnestness in our behalf might be made known to you in the sight of God. 13 Because of this, we have been (HI)comforted.

And besides our comfort, we rejoiced even much more for the joy of (HJ)Titus, because his (HK)spirit has been refreshed by you all. 14 For if I have (HL)boasted to him about you regarding anything, I was not put to shame. But as we spoke all things to you in truth, so also our boasting before (HM)Titus proved to be the truth. 15 His [aq]affection abounds all the more toward you, as he remembers the (HN)obedience of you all, how you received him with (HO)fear and trembling. 16 I rejoice that in everything (HP)I have confidence in you.

Great Generosity

Now, brothers and sisters, we make known to you the grace of God which has been (HQ)given in the churches of (HR)Macedonia, that in a [ar]great ordeal of affliction their abundance of joy and their deep poverty overflowed in the (HS)wealth of their liberality. For I testify that (HT)according to their ability, and beyond their ability, they gave voluntarily, begging us with much urging for the (HU)favor [as]of participation in the [at](HV)support of the [au]saints, and this, not as we had [av]expected, but they first (HW)gave themselves to the Lord and to us by (HX)the will of God. So we (HY)urged (HZ)Titus that as he had previously (IA)made a beginning, so he would also complete in you (IB)this gracious work as well.

But just as you (IC)excel (ID)in everything, in faith, speaking, knowledge, and in all earnestness and in the [aw]love we inspired in you, see that you also (IE)excel in this gracious work. I (IF)am not saying this as a command, but as proving, through the earnestness of others, the sincerity of your love as well. For you know (IG)the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that (IH)though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich. 10 I (II)give my opinion in this matter, for this is to your advantage, who were the first to begin (IJ)a year ago not only to do this, but also to desire to do it. 11 But now finish [ax]doing it also, so that just as there was the (IK)willingness to desire it, so there may be also the completion of it by your ability. 12 For if the willingness is present, it is acceptable (IL)according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have. 13 For this is not for the relief of others and for your hardship, but by way of equality— 14 at this present time your abundance will serve as assistance for (IM)their need, so that their abundance also may [ay]serve as assistance for (IN)your need, so that there may be equality; 15 as it is written: “(IO)The one who had gathered much did not have too much, and the one who had gathered little did not have too little.”

16 But (IP)thanks be to God who (IQ)puts the same earnestness in your behalf in the heart of (IR)Titus. 17 For he not only accepted our (IS)appeal, but being himself very earnest, he has gone to you of his own accord. 18 We have sent along with him (IT)the brother whose fame in the things of the (IU)gospel has spread through (IV)all the churches; 19 (IW)and not only that, but he has also been (IX)appointed by the churches to travel with us in (IY)this gracious work, which is being administered by us for the glory of the Lord Himself, and to show our (IZ)readiness, 20 [az]taking precaution so that no one will discredit us in our administration of this generous gift; 21 for we (JA)have regard for what is honorable, not only in (JB)the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of other people. 22 We have sent with them our brother, whom we have often tested and found diligent in many things, but now even more diligent because of his great confidence in you. 23 As for (JC)Titus, he is my (JD)partner and fellow worker [ba]among you; as for our (JE)brothers, they are [bb](JF)messengers of the churches, (JG)a glory to Christ. 24 Therefore, [bc]openly before the churches, [bd]show them the proof of your love and of our (JH)reason for boasting about you.

God Gives Most

For (JI)it is superfluous for me to write to you about this (JJ)ministry to the [be]saints; for I know your willingness, of which I (JK)boast about you to the (JL)Macedonians, namely, that (JM)Achaia has been prepared since (JN)last year, and your zeal has stirred up most of them. But I have sent the brothers, in order that our (JO)boasting about you may not prove empty in this case, so that, (JP)as I was saying, you will be prepared; otherwise, if any (JQ)Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we—not to mention you—would be put to shame by this confidence. So I considered it necessary to urge the (JR)brothers that they go on ahead to you and arrange in advance your previously promised [bf](JS)generous gift, that the same would be ready as a [bg](JT)generous gift, and not as one grudgingly given due to greediness.

Now I say this: (JU)the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows [bh]generously will also reap [bi]generously. Each one must do just as he has decided in his heart, not (JV)reluctantly or under compulsion, for (JW)God loves a cheerful giver. And (JX)God is able to make all grace overflow to you, so that, always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed; as it is written:

(JY)He scattered abroad, he gave to the poor,
His righteousness [bj]endures forever.”

10 Now He who supplies (JZ)seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and (KA)increase the harvest of your righteousness; 11 you will be (KB)enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us is producing (KC)thanksgiving to God. 12 For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying (KD)the needs of the [bk]saints, but is also overflowing (KE)through many thanksgivings to God. 13 Because of the proof given by this (KF)ministry, they will (KG)glorify God for your obedience to your (KH)confession of the (KI)gospel of Christ and for the liberality of your [bl]contribution to them and to all, 14 while they also, by prayer on your behalf, yearn for you because of the surpassing grace of God in you. 15 (KJ)Thanks be to God for His indescribable (KK)gift!

Paul Confronts the Corinthians

10 Now (KL)I, Paul, myself (KM)urge you by the (KN)meekness and gentleness of Christ—I who (KO)am [bm]meek when face to face with you, but bold toward you when absent! I ask that (KP)when I am present I need not be bold with the confidence with which I intend to be courageous against (KQ)some, who regard us as if we walked (KR)according to the flesh. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not wage battle (KS)according to the flesh, for the (KT)weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but [bn]divinely powerful (KU)for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying arguments and all (KV)arrogance raised against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the (KW)obedience of Christ, and we are ready to punish all disobedience, whenever (KX)your obedience is complete.

[bo](KY)You are looking at [bp]things as they are outwardly. (KZ)If anyone is confident in himself that he is Christ’s, have him consider this again within himself, that just as he is Christ’s, (LA)so too are we. For if (LB)I boast somewhat [bq]more about our (LC)authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be put to shame, [br]for I do not want to seem as if I would terrify you by my letters. 10 For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but his [bs]personal presence is (LD)unimpressive and (LE)his speech contemptible.” 11 Have such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when absent, such persons we are also in deed when present.

12 For we do not presume to rank or compare ourselves with [bt]some of those who (LF)commend themselves; but when they [bu]measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they have no understanding. 13 But we will not boast (LG)beyond our measure, but [bv](LH)within the measure of the [bw]domain which God assigned to us as a measure, to reach even as far as you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as if we did not reach to you, for (LI)we were the first to come even as far as you in the (LJ)gospel of Christ; 15 not boasting (LK)beyond our measure, that is, in (LL)other people’s labors, but with the hope that as (LM)your faith grows, we will be, [bx]within our [by]domain, (LN)enlarged even more by you, 16 so as to (LO)preach the gospel even to (LP)the regions beyond you, and not to boast [bz](LQ)in what has been accomplished in the domain of another. 17 But (LR)the one who boasts is to boast in the Lord. 18 For it is not the one who (LS)commends himself that is approved, but the one (LT)whom the Lord commends.

Paul Urges Forgiveness

But I determined this within myself, (A)that I would not come again to you in sorrow. For if I make you (B)sorrowful, then who is he who makes me glad but the one who is made sorrowful by me?

Forgive the Offender

And I wrote this very thing to you, lest, when I came, (C)I should have sorrow over those from whom I ought to have joy, (D)having confidence in you all that my joy is the joy of you all. For out of much [a]affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you, with many tears, (E)not that you should be grieved, but that you might know the love which I have so abundantly for you.

But (F)if anyone has caused grief, he has not (G)grieved me, but all of you to some extent—not to be too severe. This punishment which was inflicted (H)by the majority is sufficient for such a man, (I)so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow. Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him. For to this end I also wrote, that I might put you to the test, whether you are (J)obedient in all things. 10 Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For [b]if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ, 11 lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.

Triumph in Christ

12 Furthermore, (K)when I came to Troas to preach Christ’s gospel, and (L)a [c]door was opened to me by the Lord, 13 (M)I had no rest in my spirit, because I did not find Titus my brother; but taking my leave of them, I departed for Macedonia.

14 Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us [d]diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. 15 For we are to God the fragrance of Christ (N)among those who are being saved and (O)among those who are perishing. 16 (P)To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life. And (Q)who is sufficient for these things? 17 For we are not, as [e]so many, (R)peddling[f] the word of God; but as (S)of sincerity, but as from God, we speak in the sight of God in Christ.

Christ’s Epistle(T)

Do (U)we begin again to commend ourselves? Or do we need, as some others, (V)epistles of commendation to you or letters of commendation from you? (W)You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; clearly you are an epistle of Christ, (X)ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not (Y)on tablets of stone but (Z)on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart.

The Spirit, Not the Letter

And we have such trust through Christ toward God. (AA)Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but (AB)our sufficiency is from God, who also made us sufficient as (AC)ministers of (AD)the new covenant, not (AE)of the letter but of the [g]Spirit; for (AF)the letter kills, (AG)but the Spirit gives life.

Glory of the New Covenant

But if (AH)the ministry of death, (AI)written and engraved on stones, was glorious, (AJ)so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, how will (AK)the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry (AL)of righteousness exceeds much more in glory. 10 For even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels. 11 For if what is passing away was glorious, what remains is much more glorious.

12 Therefore, since we have such hope, (AM)we use great boldness of speech— 13 unlike Moses, (AN)who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at (AO)the end of what was passing away. 14 But (AP)their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. 15 But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. 16 Nevertheless (AQ)when one turns to the Lord, (AR)the veil is taken away. 17 Now (AS)the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is (AT)liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding (AU)as in a mirror (AV)the glory of the Lord, (AW)are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as [h]by the Spirit of the Lord.

The Light of Christ’s Gospel

Therefore, since we have this ministry, (AX)as we have received mercy, we (AY)do not lose heart. But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor [i]handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth (AZ)commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. But even if our gospel is veiled, (BA)it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds (BB)the god of this age (BC)has blinded, who do not believe, lest (BD)the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, (BE)who is the image of God, should shine on them. (BF)For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and (BG)ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God (BH)who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has (BI)shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Cast Down but Unconquered

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, (BJ)that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are (BK)hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not (BL)forsaken; (BM)struck down, but not destroyed— 10 (BN)always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, (BO)that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 11 For we who live (BP)are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So then death is working in us, but life in you.

13 And since we have (BQ)the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, (BR)“I believed and therefore I spoke,” we also believe and therefore speak, 14 knowing that (BS)He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus, and will present us with you. 15 For (BT)all things are for your sakes, that (BU)grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God.

Seeing the Invisible

16 Therefore we (BV)do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is (BW)being renewed day by day. 17 For (BX)our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 (BY)while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Assurance of the Resurrection

For we know that if (BZ)our earthly [j]house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house (CA)not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this (CB)we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our [k]habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, (CC)having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, (CD)but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also (CE)has given us the Spirit as [l]a guarantee.

So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For (CF)we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, (CG)well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.

The Judgment Seat of Christ

Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. 10 (CH)For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, (CI)that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. 11 Knowing, therefore, (CJ)the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are well known to God, and I also trust are well known in your consciences.

Be Reconciled to God

12 For (CK)we do not commend ourselves again to you, but give you opportunity (CL)to boast on our behalf, that you may have an answer for those who boast in appearance and not in heart. 13 For (CM)if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; or if we are of sound mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that (CN)if One died for all, then all died; 15 and He died for all, (CO)that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.

16 (CP)Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, (CQ)yet now we know Him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone (CR)is in Christ, he is (CS)a new creation; (CT)old things have passed away; behold, all things have become (CU)new. 18 Now all things are of God, (CV)who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that (CW)God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not [m]imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

20 Now then, we are (CX)ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. 21 For (CY)He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become (CZ)the righteousness of God in Him.

Marks of the Ministry

We then, as (DA)workers together with Him also (DB)plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For He says:

(DC)“In an acceptable time I have heard you,
And in the day of salvation I have helped you.”

Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

(DD)We give no offense in anything, that our ministry may not be blamed. But in all things we commend ourselves (DE)as ministers of God: in much [n]patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses, (DF)in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in fastings; by purity, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by [o]sincere love, (DG)by the word of truth, by (DH)the power of God, by (DI)the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, by honor and dishonor, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; as unknown, and (DJ)yet well known; (DK)as dying, and behold we live; (DL)as chastened, and yet not killed; 10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many (DM)rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

Be Holy

11 O Corinthians! [p]We have spoken openly to you, (DN)our heart is wide open. 12 You are not restricted by us, but (DO)you are restricted by your own affections. 13 Now in return for the same (DP)(I speak as to children), you also be open.

14 (DQ)Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For (DR)what [q]fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what [r]communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For (DS)you[s] are the temple of the living God. As God has said:

(DT)“I will dwell in them
And walk among them.
I will be their God,
And they shall be My people.”

17 Therefore

(DU)“Come out from among them
And be separate, says the Lord.
Do not touch what is unclean,
And I will receive you.”
18 “I (DV)will be a Father to you,
And you shall be My (DW)sons and daughters,
Says the Lord Almighty.”

The Corinthians’ Repentance

Therefore,(DX) having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

The Corinthians’ Repentance

Open your hearts to us. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, (DY)we have cheated no one. I do not say this to condemn; for (DZ)I have said before that you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together. (EA)Great is my boldness of speech toward you, (EB)great is my boasting on your behalf. (EC)I am filled with comfort. I am exceedingly joyful in all our tribulation.

For indeed, (ED)when we came to Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but (EE)we were troubled on every side. (EF)Outside were conflicts, inside were fears. Nevertheless (EG)God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by (EH)the coming of Titus, and not only by his coming, but also by the [t]consolation with which he was comforted in you, when he told us of your earnest desire, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced even more.

For even if I made you (EI)sorry with my letter, I do not regret it; (EJ)though I did regret it. For I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry, though only for a while. Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. 10 For (EK)godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; (EL)but the sorrow of the world produces death. 11 For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what (EM)clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication! In all things you proved yourselves to be (EN)clear in this matter. 12 Therefore, although I wrote to you, I did not do it for the sake of him who had done the wrong, nor for the sake of him who suffered wrong, (EO)but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear to you.

The Joy of Titus

13 Therefore we have been comforted in your comfort. And we rejoiced exceedingly more for the joy of Titus, because his spirit (EP)has been refreshed by you all. 14 For if in anything I have boasted to him about you, I am not ashamed. But as we spoke all things to you in truth, even so our boasting to Titus was found true. 15 And his affections are greater for you as he remembers (EQ)the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling you received him. 16 Therefore I rejoice that (ER)I have confidence in you in everything.

Excel in Giving

Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia: that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and (ES)their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality. For I bear witness that according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability, they were freely willing, imploring us with much urgency [u]that we would receive the gift and (ET)the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. And not only as we had hoped, but they first (EU)gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the (EV)will of God. So (EW)we urged Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also complete this grace in you as well. But as (EX)you abound in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us—see (EY)that you abound in this grace also.

Christ Our Pattern

(EZ)I speak not by commandment, but I am testing the sincerity of your love by the diligence of others. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, (FA)that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become (FB)rich.

10 And in this (FC)I give advice: (FD)It is to your advantage not only to be doing what you began and (FE)were desiring to do a year ago; 11 but now you also must complete the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to desire it, so there also may be a completion out of what you have. 12 For (FF)if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has, and not according to what he does not have.

13 For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened; 14 but by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may supply their lack, that their abundance also may supply your lack—that there may be equality. 15 As it is written, (FG)“He who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack.”

Collection for the Judean Saints

16 But thanks be to God who [v]puts the same earnest care for you into the heart of Titus. 17 For he not only accepted the exhortation, but being more diligent, he went to you of his own accord. 18 And we have sent with him (FH)the brother whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches, 19 and not only that, but who was also (FI)chosen by the churches to travel with us with this gift, which is administered by us (FJ)to the glory of the Lord Himself and to show your ready mind, 20 avoiding this: that anyone should blame us in this lavish gift which is administered by us— 21 (FK)providing honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.

22 And we have sent with them our brother whom we have often proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, because of the great confidence which we have in you. 23 If anyone inquires about (FL)Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker concerning you. Or if our brethren are inquired about, they are (FM)messengers[w] of the churches, the glory of Christ. 24 Therefore show to them, [x]and before the churches, the proof of your love and of our (FN)boasting on your behalf.

Administering the Gift

Now concerning (FO)the ministering to the saints, it is superfluous for me to write to you; for I know your willingness, about which I boast of you to the Macedonians, that Achaia was ready a (FP)year ago; and your zeal has stirred up the majority. (FQ)Yet I have sent the brethren, lest our boasting of you should be in vain in this respect, that, as I said, you may be ready; lest if some Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we (not to mention you!) should be ashamed of this [y]confident boasting. Therefore I thought it necessary to [z]exhort the brethren to go to you ahead of time, and prepare your generous gift beforehand, which you had previously promised, that it may be ready as a matter of generosity and not as a [aa]grudging obligation.

The Cheerful Giver

(FR)But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows [ab]bountifully will also reap [ac]bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, (FS)not grudgingly or of [ad]necessity; for (FT)God loves a cheerful giver. (FU)And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. As it is written:

(FV)“He has dispersed abroad,
He has given to the poor;
His righteousness endures forever.”

10 Now [ae]may He who (FW)supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, [af]supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your (FX)righteousness, 11 while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, (FY)which causes thanksgiving through us to God. 12 For the administration of this service not only (FZ)supplies the needs of the saints, but also is abounding through many thanksgivings to God, 13 while, through the proof of this ministry, they (GA)glorify God for the obedience of your confession to the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal (GB)sharing with them and all men, 14 and by their prayer for you, who long for you because of the exceeding (GC)grace of God in you. 15 Thanks be to God (GD)for His indescribable gift!

The Spiritual War

10 Now (GE)I, Paul, myself am pleading with you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—(GF)who in presence am lowly among you, but being absent am bold toward you. But I beg you (GG)that when I am present I may not be bold with that confidence by which I intend to be bold against some, who think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. (GH)For the weapons (GI)of our warfare are not [ag]carnal but (GJ)mighty in God (GK)for pulling down strongholds, (GL)casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, (GM)and being ready to punish all disobedience when (GN)your obedience is fulfilled.

Reality of Paul’s Authority

(GO)Do you look at things according to the outward appearance? (GP)If anyone is convinced in himself that he is Christ’s, let him again consider this in himself, that just as he is Christ’s, even [ah]so (GQ)we are Christ’s. For even if I should boast somewhat more (GR)about our authority, which the Lord gave [ai]us for [aj]edification and not for your destruction, (GS)I shall not be ashamed— lest I seem to terrify you by letters. 10 “For his letters,” they say, “are weighty and powerful, but (GT)his bodily presence is weak, and his (GU)speech contemptible.” 11 Let such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when we are absent, such we will also be in deed when we are present.

Limits of Paul’s Authority

12 (GV)For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. 13 (GW)We, however, will not boast beyond measure, but within the limits of the sphere which God appointed us—a sphere which especially includes you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves (as though our authority did not extend to you), (GX)for it was to you that we came with the gospel of Christ; 15 not boasting of things beyond measure, that is, (GY)in other men’s labors, but having hope, that as your faith is increased, we shall be greatly enlarged by you in our sphere, 16 to preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man’s sphere of accomplishment.

17 But (GZ)“he who glories, let him glory in the Lord.” 18 For (HA)not he who commends himself is approved, but (HB)whom the Lord commends.
