Reluctant Boasting

16 I say again, let no one think me a fool. If otherwise, at least receive me as a fool, that I also may boast a little. 17 What I speak, (A)I speak not according to the Lord, but as it were, foolishly, in this confidence of boasting. 18 Seeing that many boast according to the flesh, I also will boast. 19 For you put up with fools gladly, (B)since you yourselves are wise! 20 For you put up with it (C)if one brings you into bondage, if one devours you, if one takes from you, if one exalts himself, if one strikes you on the face. 21 To our shame (D)I say that we were too weak for that! But (E)in whatever anyone is bold—I speak foolishly—I am bold also.

Suffering for Christ

22 Are they (F)Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? So am I. 23 Are they ministers of Christ?—I speak as a fool—I am more: (G)in labors more abundant, (H)in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, (I)in deaths often. 24 From the Jews five times I received (J)forty (K)stripes minus one. 25 Three times I was (L)beaten with rods; (M)once I was stoned; three times I (N)was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; 26 in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, (O)in perils of my own countrymen, (P)in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; 27 in weariness and toil, (Q)in sleeplessness often, (R)in hunger and thirst, in (S)fastings often, in cold and nakedness— 28 besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: (T)my deep concern for all the churches. 29 (U)Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I do not burn with indignation?

30 If I must boast, (V)I will boast in the things which concern my [a]infirmity. 31 (W)The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, (X)who is blessed forever, knows that I am not lying. 32 (Y)In Damascus the governor, under Aretas the king, was guarding the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desiring to arrest me; 33 but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped from his hands.

16 Again I say, may no one think me to be a fool; and if otherwise, even as a fool receive me, that I also a little may boast.

17 That which I speak, I speak not according to the Lord, but as in foolishness, in this the confidence of boasting;

18 since many boast according to the flesh, I also will boast:

19 for gladly do ye bear with the fools -- being wise,

20 for ye bear, if any one is bringing you under bondage, if any one doth devour, if any one doth take away, if any one doth exalt himself, if any one on the face doth smite you;

21 in reference to dishonour I speak, how that we were weak, and in whatever any one is bold -- in foolishness I say [it] -- I also am bold.

22 Hebrews are they? I also! Israelites are they? I also! seed of Abraham are they? I also!

23 ministrants of Christ are they? -- as beside myself I speak -- I more; in labours more abundantly, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, in deaths many times;

24 from Jews five times forty [stripes] save one I did receive;

25 thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice was I shipwrecked, a night and a day in the deep I have passed;

26 journeyings many times, perils of rivers, perils of robbers, perils from kindred, perils from nations, perils in city, perils in wilderness, perils in sea, perils among false brethren;

27 in laboriousness and painfulness, in watchings many times, in hunger and thirst, in fastings many times, in cold and nakedness;

28 apart from the things without -- the crowding upon me that is daily -- the care of all the assemblies.

29 Who is infirm, and I am not infirm? who is stumbled, and I am not fired;

30 if to boast it behoveth [me], of the things of my infirmity I will boast;

31 the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ -- who is blessed to the ages -- hath known that I do not lie! --

32 In Damascus the ethnarch of Aretas the king was watching the city of the Damascenes, wishing to seize me,

33 and through a window in a rope basket I was let down, through the wall, and fled out of his hands.

16 (A)Again I say, let no one think me foolish; but if you do, receive me even as foolish, so that I also may boast a little. 17 What I am saying, I am not saying [a](B)as the Lord would, but as (C)in foolishness, in this confidence of boasting. 18 Since (D)many boast (E)according to the flesh, I will boast also. 19 For you, (F)being so wise, tolerate the foolish gladly. 20 For you tolerate it if anyone (G)enslaves you, if anyone (H)devours you, if anyone (I)takes advantage of you, if anyone (J)exalts himself, if anyone (K)hits you in the face. 21 To my (L)shame I must say that we have been (M)weak by comparison.

But in whatever respect anyone else (N)is bold—I am (O)speaking in foolishness—I too am bold. 22 Are they (P)Hebrews? (Q)So am I. Are they (R)Israelites? (S)So am I. Are they [b](T)descendants of Abraham? (U)So am I. 23 Are they (V)servants of Christ?—I am speaking as if insane—I more so; in (W)far more labors, in (X)far more imprisonments, [c](Y)beaten times without number, often in danger of (Z)death. 24 Five times I received from the Jews (AA)thirty-nine lashes. 25 Three times I was (AB)beaten with rods, once I was (AC)stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent adrift at sea. 26 I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my (AD)countrymen, dangers from the (AE)Gentiles, dangers in the (AF)city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers at sea, dangers among (AG)false brothers; 27 I have been in (AH)labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in (AI)hunger and thirst, often (AJ)without food, in cold and [d](AK)exposure. 28 Apart from such [e]external things, there is the daily pressure on me of concern for (AL)all the churches. 29 Who is (AM)weak without my being weak? Who is [f]led into sin [g]without my intense concern?

30 If I have to boast, I will boast of what pertains to my (AN)weakness. 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, (AO)He who is blessed forever, (AP)knows that I am not lying. 32 In (AQ)Damascus the ethnarch under Aretas the king was (AR)guarding the city of the Damascenes in order to seize me, 33 and I was let down in a basket (AS)through a window [h]in the wall, and so escaped his hands.
