⁸ For ^(A)even if I made you grieve with my letter, I do not regret it—though ^(B)I did regret it, for I see that that letter grieved you, though only for a while.

^19 (A)Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.

⁹ Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to ^(A)the Father of spirits ^(B)and live? ¹⁰ For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, ^(C)that we may share his holiness. ^11 (D)For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields ^(E)the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

¹¹ For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, ^(A)what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter.

⁶ But ^(A)God, who comforts the downcast, ^(B)comforted us by the coming of Titus,

² For ^(A)if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? ³ And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, ^(B)for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. ⁴ For ^(C)I wrote to you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.

Forgive the Sinner

⁵ Now ^(D)if anyone has caused pain, ^(E)he has caused it not to me, but ^(F)in some measure—not to put it too severely—to all of you. ⁶ For such a one, ^(G)this punishment by the majority is enough, ⁷ so ^(H)you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. ⁸ So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him. ⁹ For this is why I wrote, that I might ^(I)test you and know ^(J)whether you are obedient in everything. ¹⁰ Anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive. Indeed, what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ, ¹¹ so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for ^(K)we are not ignorant of his designs.

¹⁷ He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him ^(A)the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, ^(B)you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed ^(C)my sheep.

⁶ But because I have said these things to you, ^(A)sorrow has filled your heart.

⁶¹ And the Lord turned and ^(A)looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, ^(B)“Before the rooster crows today, you will ^(C)deny me three times.” ⁶² And he went out and wept bitterly.
