⁶ If we are being afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation; if we are being consoled, it is for your consolation, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we are also suffering.

¹⁰ Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they may also obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.^(A)

⁴ who consoles us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to console those who are in any affliction with the consolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God.

¹⁵ Indeed, everything is for your sake, so that grace, when it has extended to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

Living by Faith

¹⁶ So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day.^{(A) 17} For our slight, momentary affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure,^{(B) 18} because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen, for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.^(C)

¹⁹ for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my salvation.^(A)

⁵ The one who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a down payment.^(A)

²⁸ We know that all things work together^[a] for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.^(A)

¹³ I pray, therefore, that you^[a] may not lose heart over my sufferings for you; they are your glory.

¹⁰ For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share his holiness.^{(A) 11} Now, discipline always seems painful rather than pleasant at the time, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.^(B)

¹⁵ I will most gladly spend and be spent for you. If I love you more, am I to be loved less?^(A)
