Hezekiah Purifies the Temple(A)
29 Hezekiah(B) was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Abijah daughter of Zechariah. 2 He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father David(C) had done.
3 In the first month of the first year of his reign, he opened the doors of the temple of the Lord and repaired(D) them. 4 He brought in the priests and the Levites, assembled them in the square on the east side 5 and said: “Listen to me, Levites! Consecrate(E) yourselves now and consecrate the temple of the Lord, the God of your ancestors. Remove all defilement from the sanctuary. 6 Our parents(F) were unfaithful;(G) they did evil in the eyes of the Lord our God and forsook him. They turned their faces away from the Lord’s dwelling place and turned their backs on him. 7 They also shut the doors of the portico and put out the lamps. They did not burn incense(H) or present any burnt offerings at the sanctuary to the God of Israel. 8 Therefore, the anger of the Lord has fallen on Judah and Jerusalem; he has made them an object of dread and horror(I) and scorn,(J) as you can see with your own eyes. 9 This is why our fathers have fallen by the sword and why our sons and daughters and our wives are in captivity.(K) 10 Now I intend to make a covenant(L) with the Lord, the God of Israel, so that his fierce anger(M) will turn away from us. 11 My sons, do not be negligent now, for the Lord has chosen you to stand before him and serve him,(N) to minister(O) before him and to burn incense.”
12 Then these Levites(P) set to work:
from the Kohathites,
Mahath son of Amasai and Joel son of Azariah;
from the Merarites,
Kish son of Abdi and Azariah son of Jehallelel;
from the Gershonites,
Joah son of Zimmah and Eden(Q) son of Joah;
13 from the descendants of Elizaphan,(R)
Shimri and Jeiel;
from the descendants of Asaph,(S)
Zechariah and Mattaniah;
14 from the descendants of Heman,
Jehiel and Shimei;
from the descendants of Jeduthun,
Shemaiah and Uzziel.
15 When they had assembled their fellow Levites and consecrated themselves, they went in to purify(T) the temple of the Lord, as the king had ordered, following the word of the Lord. 16 The priests went into the sanctuary of the Lord to purify it. They brought out to the courtyard of the Lord’s temple everything unclean that they found in the temple of the Lord. The Levites took it and carried it out to the Kidron Valley.(U) 17 They began the consecration on the first day of the first month, and by the eighth day of the month they reached the portico of the Lord. For eight more days they consecrated the temple of the Lord itself, finishing on the sixteenth day of the first month.
18 Then they went in to King Hezekiah and reported: “We have purified the entire temple of the Lord, the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the table for setting out the consecrated bread, with all its articles. 19 We have prepared and consecrated all the articles(V) that King Ahaz removed in his unfaithfulness while he was king. They are now in front of the Lord’s altar.”
20 Early the next morning King Hezekiah gathered the city officials together and went up to the temple of the Lord. 21 They brought seven bulls, seven rams, seven male lambs and seven male goats(W) as a sin offering[a](X) for the kingdom, for the sanctuary and for Judah. The king commanded the priests, the descendants of Aaron, to offer these on the altar of the Lord. 22 So they slaughtered the bulls, and the priests took the blood and splashed it against the altar; next they slaughtered the rams and splashed their blood against the altar; then they slaughtered the lambs and splashed their blood(Y) against the altar. 23 The goats(Z) for the sin offering were brought before the king and the assembly, and they laid their hands(AA) on them. 24 The priests then slaughtered the goats and presented their blood on the altar for a sin offering to atone(AB) for all Israel, because the king had ordered the burnt offering and the sin offering for all Israel.(AC)
25 He stationed the Levites in the temple of the Lord with cymbals, harps and lyres in the way prescribed by David(AD) and Gad(AE) the king’s seer and Nathan the prophet; this was commanded by the Lord through his prophets. 26 So the Levites stood ready with David’s instruments,(AF) and the priests with their trumpets.(AG)
27 Hezekiah gave the order to sacrifice the burnt offering on the altar. As the offering began, singing to the Lord began also, accompanied by trumpets and the instruments(AH) of David king of Israel. 28 The whole assembly bowed in worship, while the musicians played and the trumpets sounded. All this continued until the sacrifice of the burnt offering(AI) was completed.
29 When the offerings were finished, the king and everyone present with him knelt down and worshiped.(AJ) 30 King Hezekiah and his officials ordered the Levites to praise the Lord with the words of David and of Asaph the seer. So they sang praises with gladness and bowed down and worshiped.
31 Then Hezekiah said, “You have now dedicated yourselves to the Lord. Come and bring sacrifices(AK) and thank offerings to the temple of the Lord.” So the assembly brought sacrifices and thank offerings, and all whose hearts were willing(AL) brought burnt offerings.
32 The number of burnt offerings(AM) the assembly brought was seventy bulls, a hundred rams and two hundred male lambs—all of them for burnt offerings to the Lord. 33 The animals consecrated as sacrifices amounted to six hundred bulls and three thousand sheep and goats. 34 The priests, however, were too few to skin all the burnt offerings;(AN) so their relatives the Levites helped them until the task was finished and until other priests had been consecrated,(AO) for the Levites had been more conscientious in consecrating themselves than the priests had been. 35 There were burnt offerings in abundance, together with the fat(AP) of the fellowship offerings(AQ) and the drink offerings(AR) that accompanied the burnt offerings.
So the service of the temple of the Lord was reestablished. 36 Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced at what God had brought about for his people, because it was done so quickly.(AS)

King Hezekiah Rededicates the Temple(A)
29 Hezekiah began to rule as king when he was 25 years old. He ruled for 29 years in Jerusalem. His mother was Abijah, daughter of Zechariah. 2 He did what Yahweh considered right, as his ancestor David had done.
3 In the first month of his first year as king, he opened the doors of Yahweh’s temple and repaired them. 4 He brought the priests and Levites together in the square on the east side of the temple.
5 He said to them, “Listen to me, Levites. Perform the ceremonies to make the temple of Yahweh Elohim of your ancestors holy. Remove anything that has been corrupted from the holy place. 6 Our ancestors were unfaithful and did what Yahweh our Elohim considered evil. They deserted him. They turned away from Yahweh’s tent[a] and turned their backs on him. 7 They also shut the doors of the temple’s entrance hall, extinguished the lamps, and didn’t burn incense or sacrifice burnt offerings in the holy place to the Elohim of Israel. 8 So Yahweh was angry with Judah and Jerusalem. He made them something that shocks and terrifies people and that people ridicule, as you can see with your own eyes. 9 Our fathers were killed in battle, and our sons, daughters, and wives are prisoners because of this. 10 Now I intend to make a pledge to Yahweh Elohim of Israel so that he may turn his burning anger away from us. 11 Don’t be negligent, my sons. Yahweh has chosen you to stand in front of him, serve him, be his servants, and burn sacrifices.”
12 So the Levites started to work.
From Kohath’s descendants were Mahath, son of Amasai, and Joel, son of Azariah.
From Merari’s descendants were Kish, son of Abdi, and Azariah, son of Jehallelel.
From Gershon’s descendants were Joah, son of Zimmah, and Eden, son of Joah.
13 From Elizaphan’s descendants were Shimri and Jeiel.
From Asaph’s descendants were Zechariah and Mattaniah.
14 From Heman’s descendants were Jehiel and Shimei.
From Jeduthun’s descendants were Shemaiah and Uzziel.
15 These men gathered their relatives and performed the ceremonies to make themselves holy. Then they obeyed the king’s order from Yahweh’s word and entered the temple to make it clean.[b] 16 The priests entered Yahweh’s temple to make it clean. They carried into the courtyard every unclean thing that they found in Yahweh’s temple. Then the Levites took the unclean items outside the city to the Kidron Brook. 17 They started on the first day of the first month. On the eighth day they went into Yahweh’s entrance hall, and for eight days they performed the ceremonies to make Yahweh’s temple holy. They finished on the sixteenth day of the first month.
18 Then they went to King Hezekiah. They said to him, “We have made all of Yahweh’s temple clean. This includes the altar for burnt offerings, all its utensils, the table for the rows of bread and all its utensils, 19 and all the utensils King Ahaz refused to use during his reign when he was unfaithful. We have restored them and made them holy. They are in front of Yahweh’s altar.”
20 Early in the morning Hezekiah gathered the leaders of the city and went to Yahweh’s temple. 21 They brought seven bulls, seven rams, seven lambs, and seven male goats as an offering for sin for the kingdom, the holy place, and Judah. Hezekiah told the priests, Aaron’s descendants, to sacrifice the animals on Yahweh’s altar.
22 So they slaughtered the bulls, and the priests sprinkled the blood on the altar. Then they slaughtered the rams and sprinkled the blood on the altar. After that, they slaughtered the lambs and sprinkled the blood on the altar. 23 Then they brought the male goats for the offering for sin in front of the king and the assembly, who laid their hands on them. 24 The priests slaughtered the goats and made their blood an offering for sin at the altar to make peace with the Lord for Israel. The king had said that the burnt offerings and offerings for sin should be for all Israel.
25 He had the Levites stand in Yahweh’s temple with cymbals, harps, and lyres as David, the king’s seer[c] Gad, and the prophet Nathan had ordered. This command came from Yahweh through his prophets. 26 The Levites stood with David’s instruments, and the priests had the trumpets. 27 Then Hezekiah ordered the sacrificing of burnt offerings on the altar. When the burnt offerings started, the songs to Yahweh started. These songs were accompanied by trumpets and the instruments of King David of Israel. 28 The whole assembly bowed down with their faces touching the ground, singers began to sing, and the trumpets blew until the burnt offering was finished. 29 When the burnt offerings were finished, the king and everyone who was with him kneeled and bowed down. 30 Then King Hezekiah and the leaders told the Levites to praise Yahweh with the words of David and the seer Asaph. They joyfully sang praises, bowed down, and worshiped.
31 Hezekiah said, “You have dedicated your lives to Yahweh. Come, bring sacrifices and thank offerings to Yahweh’s temple.”
The assembly brought sacrifices and thank offerings, and everyone who was willing brought burnt offerings. 32 The burnt offerings brought by the assembly totaled 70 bulls, 100 rams, and 200 lambs. All of these were burnt offerings to Yahweh. 33 The animals dedicated as holy sacrifices were 600 bulls and 3,000 sheep. 34 But the priests needed more help to skin all the burnt offerings. So their relatives, the Levites, helped them until the work was completed and the priests could make themselves holy. The Levites were more diligent in making themselves holy than the priests were. 35 There were many burnt offerings in addition to the fat of the fellowship offerings and wine offerings that accompanied the burnt offerings. So the worship in Yahweh’s temple was reestablished. 36 Hezekiah and all the people were overjoyed because of what Elohim had done for the people. Everything had happened so quickly.

Hezekiah Cleanses the Temple
3 In the first year of his reign, in the first month, he (C)opened the doors of the house of the Lord and repaired them. 4 He brought in the priests and the Levites and assembled them in the square on the east 5 and said to them, “Hear me, Levites! Now (D)consecrate yourselves, and consecrate the house of the Lord, the God of your fathers, and carry out the filth[b] from the Holy Place. 6 For our fathers have been unfaithful and have done what was evil in the sight of the Lord our God. They have forsaken him and (E)have turned away their faces from the habitation of the Lord and turned their backs. 7 They also (F)shut the doors of the vestibule and put out the lamps and have not burned incense or offered burnt offerings in the Holy Place to the God of Israel. 8 Therefore (G)the wrath of the Lord came on Judah and Jerusalem, and he has made them (H)an object of horror, of astonishment, (I)and of hissing, as you see with your own eyes. 9 For behold, (J)our fathers have fallen by the sword, and our sons and our daughters and our wives are in captivity for this. 10 Now (K)it is in my heart (L)to make a covenant with the Lord, the God of Israel, in order that his fierce anger may turn away from us. 11 My sons, do not now be negligent, (M)for the Lord has chosen you to stand in his presence, to minister to him and to be his ministers and make offerings to him.”
12 Then the Levites arose, (N)Mahath the son of Amasai, and Joel the son of Azariah, of the sons of (O)the Kohathites; and of the sons of (P)Merari, Kish the son of Abdi, and Azariah the son of Jehallelel; and of the (Q)Gershonites, Joah the son of Zimmah, and Eden the son of Joah; 13 and of the sons of (R)Elizaphan, Shimri and Jeuel; and of the sons of (S)Asaph, Zechariah and Mattaniah; 14 and of the sons of (T)Heman, Jehuel and Shimei; and of the sons of (U)Jeduthun, Shemaiah and Uzziel. 15 They gathered their brothers and (V)consecrated themselves and went in as the king had commanded, (W)by the words of the Lord, (X)to cleanse the house of the Lord. 16 The priests went into the inner part of the house of the Lord to cleanse it, and they brought out all the uncleanness that they found in the temple of the Lord into the court of the house of the Lord. And the Levites took it and carried it out to (Y)the brook Kidron. 17 They began to consecrate (Z)on the first day of the first month, and on the eighth day of the month they came to the vestibule of the Lord. Then for eight days they consecrated the house of the Lord, and on the sixteenth day of the first month they finished. 18 Then they went in to Hezekiah the king and said, “We have cleansed all the house of the Lord, the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the table for the showbread and all its utensils. 19 All the utensils (AA)that King Ahaz discarded in his reign when he was faithless, we have made ready and consecrated, and behold, they are before the altar of the Lord.”
Hezekiah Restores Temple Worship
20 Then Hezekiah the king rose early and gathered the officials of the city and went up to the house of the Lord. 21 And they brought seven bulls, seven rams, seven lambs, and seven male goats (AB)for a sin offering for the kingdom and for the sanctuary and for Judah. And he commanded the priests, the sons of Aaron, to offer them on the altar of the Lord. 22 So they slaughtered the bulls, and the priests received the blood (AC)and threw it against the altar. And they slaughtered the rams, and their blood was thrown against the altar. And they slaughtered the lambs, and their blood was thrown against the altar. 23 Then the goats for the sin offering were brought to the king and the assembly, (AD)and they laid their hands on them, 24 and the priests slaughtered them and made a sin offering with their blood on the altar, (AE)to make atonement for all Israel. For the king commanded that the burnt offering and the sin offering should be made for all Israel.

Come near; bring sacrifices and thank offerings to the house of the Lord.” And the assembly brought sacrifices and thank offerings, and all who were (AO)of a willing heart brought burnt offerings. 32 The number of the burnt offerings that the assembly brought was 70 bulls, 100 rams, and 200 lambs; all these were for a burnt offering to the Lord. 33 And the consecrated offerings were 600 bulls and 3,000 sheep. 34 But the priests were too few and could not flay all the burnt offerings, so until other priests had consecrated themselves, (AP)their brothers the Levites helped them, until the work was finished—(AQ)for the Levites were more upright in heart than the priests in consecrating themselves. 35 Besides the great number of burnt offerings, there was (AR)the fat of the peace offerings, and there were (AS)the drink offerings for the burnt offerings. Thus the service of the house of the Lord was restored. 36 And Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced because God had provided for the people, for the thing came about suddenly.

29 (A) Hiskia var tjugofem år när han blev kung, och han regerade tjugonio år[a] i Jerusalem. Hans mor hette Abia och hon var dotter till Sakarja. 2 Han gjorde det som var rätt i Herrens ögon, precis som hans fader David hade gjort.

De vände sitt ansikte bort ifrån Herrens boning och vände honom ryggen. 7 De stängde också igen dörrarna till förhuset och släckte lamporna, och de tände ingen rökelse och offrade inga brännoffer i helgedomen åt Israels Gud.
8 (C) Därför har Herrens vrede kommit över Juda och Jerusalem, och han har gjort dem till ett avskräckande exempel, till häpnad och förakt, som ni ser med egna ögon. 9 (D) Ja, därför har också våra fäder fallit för svärd, och våra söner och döttrar och hustrur har kommit i fångenskap. 10 Men nu har jag i sinnet att sluta ett förbund med Herren, Israels Gud, för att hans vredes glöd ska vända sig ifrån oss. 11 (E) Så var nu inte försumliga, mina barn, för Herren har utvalt er att stå inför hans ansikte och göra tjänst inför honom till att vara hans tjänare och tända rökelse inför honom.”
12 (F) Då reste sig leviterna:

och Eden, Joashs son,
13 av Elisafans släkt Shimri

14 av Hemans släkt Jehuel
och Shimei
samt av Jedutuns släkt
Shemaja och Ussiel.
15 Dessa samlade sina bröder och helgade sig och gick sedan för att rena Herrens hus, så som kungen hade befallt i kraft av Herrens ord.
16 Men prästerna gick in i det inre av Herrens hus för att rena det, och all orenhet som de fann i Herrens tempel bar de ut på förgården till Herrens hus. Där tog leviterna emot det och bar ut det i Kidrondalen. 17 De började att helga templet på första dagen i första månaden, och på åttonde dagen i månaden hade de hunnit till Herrens förhus. De helgade sedan Herrens hus under åtta dagar. På sextonde dagen i första månaden var de färdiga. 18 Då gick de in till kung Hiskia och sade: ”Vi har renat hela Herrens hus och brännofferaltaret med tillbehör och skådebrödsbordet med tillbehör. 19 (G) Alla de kärl som kung Ahas under sin regering i trolöshet förkastade har vi återställt och helgat, och de står nu framför Herrens altare.”
20 Tidigt på morgonen samlade kung Hiskia furstarna i staden och gick upp i Herrens hus. 21 (H) Man förde fram sju tjurar, sju baggar, sju lamm och sju bockar till syndoffer för landet och helgedomen och för Juda. Och kungen befallde Arons söner, prästerna, att offra det på Herrens altare. 22 (I) De slaktade då tjurarna, och prästerna tog blodet och stänkte det på altaret. Därefter slaktade de baggarna och stänkte blodet på altaret. Sedan slaktade de lammen och stänkte blodet på altaret. 23 (J) Så förde de fram syndofferbockarna inför kungen och församlingen, och de lade händerna på dem. 24 Och prästerna slaktade dem och lät deras blod som syndoffer komma på altaret till försoning för hela Israel. Kungen hade nämligen befallt att dessa brännoffer och syndoffer skulle offras för hela Israel.
25 (K) Han lät leviterna ställa upp sig till tjänstgöring i Herrens hus med cymbaler, lyror och harpor, så som David och kungens siare Gad och profeten Natan hade befallt, för Herren hade genom sina profeter gett befallning om detta. 26 (L) Och leviterna ställde upp sig med Davids instrument och prästerna med trumpeterna. 27 Hiskia befallde att man skulle offra brännoffret på altaret. Samtidigt som offret bars fram började Herrens sång att ljuda tillsammans med trumpeterna under ledning av Israels kung Davids instrument. 28 Hela församlingen tillbad medan sången sjöngs och trumpeterna ljöd, och det pågick tills brännoffret var fullbordat. 29 När de hade offrat brännoffret böjde kungen knä, och alla som var tillsammans med honom tillbad. 30 Och kung Hiskia och furstarna befallde leviterna att lova Herren med Davids och siaren Asafs ord, och de lovsjöng med glädje, de böjde sig ner och tillbad.
31 (M) Hiskia tog då till orda och sade: ”Ni har nu blivit vigda åt Herren. Kom därför hit och för fram slaktoffer och gemenskapsoffer till Herrens hus.” Då förde församlingen fram slaktoffer och gemenskapsoffer, och var och en som i sitt hjärta manades att offra brännoffer gjorde så. 32 Antalet brännofferdjur som församlingen förde fram var 70 tjurar, 100 baggar och 200 lamm – alla dessa var till brännoffer åt Herren. 33 Och gemenskapsoffren utgjordes av 600 tjurar och 3 000 djur av småboskapen.
34 (N) Men prästerna var för få och kunde inte flå alla brännoffersdjuren. Därför hjälpte deras bröder leviterna dem tills arbetet var fullgjort och prästerna hade helgat sig. Leviterna var nämligen mer angelägna än prästerna att helga sig. 35 Antalet brännoffer var också stort, och därtill kom fettstyckena av gemenskapsoffren liksom de dryckesoffer som hörde till brännoffren. På så sätt blev det ordnat med tjänstgöringen i Herrens hus. 36 Och Hiskia och allt folket gladde sig över vad Gud hade berett åt folket, för det hade hänt plötsligt.
