⁸ So Solomon observed the festival^(A) at that time for seven days, and all Israel^(B) with him—a vast assembly, people from Lebo Hamath^(C) to the Wadi of Egypt.^(D)

¹⁸ On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram^(A) and said, “To your descendants I give this land,^(B) from the Wadi^[a] of Egypt^(C) to the great river, the Euphrates^(D)—

⁶⁵ So Solomon observed the festival^(A) at that time, and all Israel with him—a vast assembly, people from Lebo Hamath^(B) to the Wadi of Egypt.^(C) They celebrated it before the Lord our God for seven days and seven days more, fourteen days in all.

²⁷ But we know where this man is from;^(A) when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”

²⁸ Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts,^(B) cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from.^(C) I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true.^(D) You do not know him, ²⁹ but I know him^(E) because I am from him and he sent me.”^(F)

³⁰ At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him,^(G) because his hour had not yet come.^{(H) 31} Still, many in the crowd believed in him.^(I) They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs^(J) than this man?”

³² The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.

³³ Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time,^(K) and then I am going to the one who sent me.^{(L) 34} You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”^(M)

³⁵ The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered^(N) among the Greeks,^(O) and teach the Greeks? ³⁶ What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”^(P)

³⁷ On the last and greatest day of the festival,^(Q) Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.^{(R) 38} Whoever believes^(S) in me, as Scripture has said,^(T) rivers of living water^(U) will flow from within them.”^{[a](V) 39} By this he meant the Spirit,^(W) whom those who believed in him were later to receive.^(X) Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.^(Y)

² But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles^(A) was near,

¹⁶ Then the survivors^(A) from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship^(B) the King,^(C) the Lord Almighty, and to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles.^{(D) 17} If any of the peoples of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship^(E) the King, the Lord Almighty, they will have no rain.^{(F) 18} If the Egyptian people do not go up and take part, they will have no rain. The Lord^[a] will bring on them the plague^(G) he inflicts on the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles.^{(H) 19} This will be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles.^(I)

¹³ On the second day of the month, the heads of all the families, along with the priests and the Levites, gathered around Ezra the teacher to give attention to the words of the Law. ¹⁴ They found written in the Law, which the Lord had commanded through Moses, that the Israelites were to live in temporary shelters^(A) during the festival of the seventh month ¹⁵ and that they should proclaim this word and spread it throughout their towns and in Jerusalem: “Go out into the hill country and bring back branches from olive and wild olive trees, and from myrtles, palms and shade trees, to make temporary shelters”—as it is written.^[a]

¹⁶ So the people went out and brought back branches and built themselves temporary shelters on their own roofs, in their courtyards, in the courts of the house of God and in the square by the Water Gate^(B) and the one by the Gate of Ephraim.^{(C) 17} The whole company that had returned from exile built temporary shelters and lived in them.^(D) From the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated^(E) it like this. And their joy was very great.

¹⁸ Day after day, from the first day to the last, Ezra read^(F) from the Book of the Law^(G) of God. They celebrated the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day, in accordance with the regulation,^(H) there was an assembly.^(I)

¹³ A very large crowd of people assembled in Jerusalem to celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread^(A) in the second month.
