¹⁰ And now behold, the men of ^(A)Ammon and Moab and ^(B)Mount Seir, whom ^(C)you would not let Israel invade when they came from the land of Egypt, ^(D)and whom they avoided and did not destroy—

¹⁹ And when you approach the territory of the people of Ammon, ^(A)do not harass them or contend with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the people of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to ^(B)the sons of Lot for a possession.’

⁴ and command the people, “You are about to pass through the territory of ^(A)your brothers, the people of Esau, ^(B)who live in Seir; and ^(C)they will be afraid of you. So be very careful. ⁵ Do not contend with them, for I will not give you any of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because ^(D)I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.

⁹ And the Lord said to me, ^(A)‘Do not harass Moab or contend with them in battle, for I will not give you any of their land for a possession, because I have given ^(B)Ar to ^(C)the people of Lot for a possession.’

Jehoshaphat's Prayer

20 After this ^(A)the Moabites and Ammonites, and with them some of the Meunites,^[a] came against Jehoshaphat for battle.

¹⁵ and said to him, “Thus says Jephthah: ^(A)Israel did not take away the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites, ¹⁶ but when they came up from Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness ^(B)to the Red Sea and ^(C)came to Kadesh. ^17 (D)Israel then sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let us pass through your land,’ ^(E)but the king of Edom would not listen. And they sent also to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel ^(F)remained at Kadesh.

¹⁸ “Then they journeyed through the wilderness and ^(G)went around the land of Edom and the land of Moab and ^(H)arrived on the east side of the land of Moab and ^(I)camped on the other side of the Arnon. But they did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was the boundary of Moab.

^17 (A)Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or vineyard, ^(B)or drink water from a well. We will go along the King's Highway. We will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left until we have passed through your territory.” ¹⁸ But Edom said to him, “You shall not pass through, lest I come out with the sword against you.” ¹⁹ And the people of Israel said to him, “We will go up by the highway, ^(C)and if we drink of your water, I and my livestock, ^(D)then I will pay for it. Let me only pass through on foot, nothing more.” ²⁰ But he said, ^(E)“You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against them with a large army and with a strong force. ²¹ Thus Edom ^(F)refused to give Israel passage through his territory, so Israel ^(G)turned away from him.

²² And when they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ^(A)an ambush against the men of ^(B)Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah, so that they were routed.
