For I made up my mind (A)not to make another painful visit to you. For (B)if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, (C)for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. For (D)I wrote to you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you.

Forgive the Sinner

Now (E)if anyone has caused pain, (F)he has caused it not to me, but (G)in some measure—not to put it too severely—to all of you. For such a one, (H)this punishment by the majority is enough, so (I)you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him. For this is why I wrote, that I might (J)test you and know (K)whether you are obedient in everything. 10 Anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive. Indeed, what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ, 11 so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for (L)we are not ignorant of his designs.

Triumph in Christ

12 When (M)I came to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ, even though (N)a door was opened for me in the Lord, 13 my spirit (O)was not at rest because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I took leave of them and went on to Macedonia.

14 But (P)thanks be to God, who in Christ always (Q)leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads (R)the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are the aroma of Christ to God among (S)those who are being saved and among (T)those who are perishing, 16 (U)to one a fragrance from death to death, (V)to the other a fragrance from life to life. (W)Who is sufficient for these things? 17 For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God's word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.

Ministers of the New Covenant

(X)Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, (Y)as some do, (Z)letters of recommendation to you, or from you? (AA)You yourselves are our letter of recommendation, written on our[a] hearts, to be known and read by all. And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of (AB)the living God, not on (AC)tablets of stone but on (AD)tablets of (AE)human hearts.[b]

(AF)Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. (AG)Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but (AH)our sufficiency is from God, who has made us sufficient to be (AI)ministers of (AJ)a new covenant, not of (AK)the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but (AL)the Spirit gives life.

Now if (AM)the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such glory (AN)that the Israelites could not gaze at Moses' face because of its glory, which was being brought to an end, will not the ministry of the Spirit have even more glory? For if there was glory in (AO)the ministry of condemnation, (AP)the ministry of righteousness must far exceed it in glory. 10 Indeed, in this case, what once had glory has come to have no glory at all, because of the glory that surpasses it. 11 For if what was being brought to an end came with glory, much more will what is permanent have glory.

12 Since we have such a hope, (AQ)we are very bold, 13 not like Moses, (AR)who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. 14 But (AS)their minds were (AT)hardened. For to this day, (AU)when they read (AV)the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. 15 Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. 16 But when (AW)one[c] turns to the Lord, (AX)the veil is removed. 17 Now the Lord[d] is the Spirit, and where (AY)the Spirit of the Lord is, there is (AZ)freedom. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, (BA)beholding (BB)the glory of the Lord,[e] (BC)are being transformed into the same image (BD)from one degree of glory to another.[f] For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

So I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you.(A) For if I grieve you,(B) who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved? I wrote as I did,(C) so that when I came I would not be distressed(D) by those who should have made me rejoice. I had confidence(E) in all of you, that you would all share my joy. For I wrote you(F) out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.

Forgiveness for the Offender

If anyone has caused grief,(G) he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some extent—not to put it too severely. The punishment(H) inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient. Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him,(I) so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him. Another reason I wrote you(J) was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.(K) 10 Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, 11 in order that Satan(L) might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.(M)

Ministers of the New Covenant

12 Now when I went to Troas(N) to preach the gospel of Christ(O) and found that the Lord had opened a door(P) for me, 13 I still had no peace of mind,(Q) because I did not find my brother Titus(R) there. So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia.(S)

14 But thanks be to God,(T) who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma(U) of the knowledge(V) of him everywhere. 15 For we are to God the pleasing aroma(W) of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.(X) 16 To the one we are an aroma that brings death;(Y) to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?(Z) 17 Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit.(AA) On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity,(AB) as those sent from God.(AC)

Are we beginning to commend ourselves(AD) again? Or do we need, like some people, letters of recommendation(AE) to you or from you? You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone.(AF) You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God,(AG) not on tablets of stone(AH) but on tablets of human hearts.(AI)

Such confidence(AJ) we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves(AK) to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.(AL) He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant(AM)—not of the letter(AN) but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.(AO)

The Greater Glory of the New Covenant

Now if the ministry that brought death,(AP) which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory,(AQ) transitory though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? If the ministry that brought condemnation(AR) was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness!(AS) 10 For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. 11 And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!

12 Therefore, since we have such a hope,(AT) we are very bold.(AU) 13 We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face(AV) to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away. 14 But their minds were made dull,(AW) for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant(AX) is read.(AY) It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. 15 Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. 16 But whenever anyone turns to the Lord,(AZ) the veil is taken away.(BA) 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit,(BB) and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.(BC) 18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate[a](BD) the Lord’s glory,(BE) are being transformed into his image(BF) with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
