I witness before God and Christ Jesus, that shall deem the quick and the dead, by the coming of him, and the kingdom of him,

preach the word, be thou busy suitably without rest, reprove thou, beseech thou, blame thou in all patience and doctrine. [preach the word, be thou busy to opportune and inopportune, reprove, beseech, blame in all patience and doctrine.]

For time shall be, when men shall not suffer wholesome teaching, but at their desires they shall gather together to themselves masters itching to the ears. [Forsooth time shall be, when men shall not sustain whole doctrine, but at their desires, they shall gather together to themselves masters itching, or pleasing, to the ears.]

And truly they shall turn away the hearing from truth, but to fables they shall turn. [And truly they shall turn away their hearing from truth, but to fables they shall be turned together.]

But wake thou, in all things travail thou, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill thy service [fulfill thy service, or office], be thou sober.

For I am sacrificed now, and the time of my departing is nigh.

I have striven a good strife, I have ended the course, I have kept the faith.

In the tother time a crown of rightwiseness is kept to me, which the Lord, a just doomsman, shall yield to me in that day; and not only to me, but also to these that love his coming [but to them that love his coming].

Hie thou to come to me soon.

10 For Demas, loving this world, hath forsaken me [Forsooth Demas hath forsaken me, loving this world], and went to Thessalonica, Crescens into Galatia, Titus into Dalmatia;

11 Luke alone is with me. Take thou Mark [Take Mark], and bring with thee; for he is profitable to me into service.

12 Forsooth I sent Tychicus to Ephesus.

13 The cloak [cloth] which I left at Troas at Carpas, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but most the parchments.

14 Alexander, the treasurer, showed to me much evil; the Lord shall yield to him after his works.

15 Whom also thou eschew; for he against-stood full greatly our words.

16 In my first defence no man helped me, but all forsook me; be it not areckoned to them. [In my first defence no man was to me, but all forsook me; be it not reckoned to them.]

17 But the Lord helped me, and comforted me, that the preaching be filled by me, and that all folks hear, that I am delivered from the mouth of the lion. [Forsooth the Lord stood nigh to me, and comforted me, that the preaching be full-filled by me, and that all folks hear, and I am delivered from the mouth of the lion.]

18 And the Lord delivered me from all evil work, and shall make me safe into his heavenly kingdom, to whom be glory into worlds of worlds. Amen.

19 Greet well Prisca, and Aquila, and the house of Onesiphorus.

20 Erastus left at Corinth [Forsooth Erastus dwelt at Corinth], and I left Trophimus sick at Miletum.

21 Hie thou to come before winter. Eubulus, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all brethren, greet thee well.

22 Our Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. The grace of God be with you. Amen.

He exhorts Timothy to be fervent in the word and to suffer adversity, makes mention of his own death, and bids Timothy to come to him.

I charge you therefore before God, and before the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the quick and the dead at his appearing in his kingdom: preach the word; be fervent, be it in season or out of season. Refute, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and instruction.

For the time will come when the people will not suffer wholesome doctrine, but, after their own fancies, they (whose ears itch) will get themselves a heap of teachers, and will turn their ears from the truth, and will be given to fables. But as for you, watch in all things, and suffer adversity, and do the work of an evangelist. Fulfil your office to the utmost.

For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departing is at hand. I have fought a good fight, and have fulfilled my course, and have kept the faith. From henceforth is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, who is a righteous judge, shall give me at that day:  not to me only, but to all who love his coming.

Make speed to come to me at once. 10 For Demas has left me, and loves this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me.

Take Mark and bring him with you, for he is necessary to me, to minister. 12 And Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus.

13 The cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus, when you come, bring with you – and the books, but especially the parchment.

14 Alexander the coppersmith did me much ill; the Lord reward him according to his deeds. 15 You must beware of him also, for he withstood our preaching sore.

16 At my first defence, no one assisted me, but all forsook me. I pray God that it may not be laid to their charges. 17 Notwithstanding, the Lord assisted me and strengthened me, so that by me the preaching should be fulfilled to the utmost, and so that all the Gentiles may hear. And I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. 18 And the Lord will deliver me from all evil-doing, and will keep me for his heavenly kingdom. To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

19 Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus.

20 Erastus stayed at Corinth. Trophimus I left at Miletum, sick.

21 Make speed to come before winter.

Eubulus greets you, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren.

22 The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.

The end of the second epistle to Timothy.
Written from Rome when Paul was
presented the second time
up before Emperor
Nero.

1 He chargeth him to preach the Gospel with all diligence, 3 in that so miserable a time: 6 that his death is hard at hand, 8 yet so, that as a conqueror he maketh haste to a glorious triumph. 10 He showeth the cause why he sendeth for Timothy, 11 even by reason of his present state.

I [a]Charge thee therefore before God, and before the Lord Jesus Christ, which shall judge the quick and dead at that his appearing, and in his kingdom,

Preach the word: be instant, in season, and out of season: improve, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

[b]For the time will come when they will not suffer wholesome doctrine: but having their ears itching, shall after their own lusts get them an heap of teachers,

And shall turn their ears from the truth, and shall be given unto [c]fables.

[d]But watch thou in all things: suffer adversity: do the work of an Evangelist: [e]cause thy ministry to be thoroughly liked of.

[f]For I am now ready to be [g]offered, and the time of my departing is at hand.

I have fought a good fight, and have finished my course: I have kept the faith.

For henceforth is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous Judge shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love that his appearing.

[h]Make speed to come unto me at once:

10 For Demas hath forsaken me, and hath [i]embraced this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica. Crescens is gone to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.

11 (A)Only Luke is with me. Take Mark and bring him with thee: for he is profitable unto me to minister.

12 And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus.

13 The cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but specially the parchments.

14 Alexander the coppersmith hath done me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works.

15 Of whom be thou ware also: for he withstood our preaching sore.

16 At my first answering no man assisted me, but all forsook me: I pray God, that it may not be laid to their charge.

17 Notwithstanding the Lord assisted me, and strengthened me, that by me the preaching might be fully believed, and that all the Gentiles should hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the [j]lion.

18 And the Lord will deliver me from every [k]evil work, and will preserve me unto his [l]heavenly kingdom: to whom be praise for ever and ever, Amen.

19 Salute Prisca and Aquila, and the (B)household of Onesiphorus.

20 Erastus abode at Corinth: Trophimus I left at Miletus sick.

21 Make speed to come before winter. Eubulus greeteth thee, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren.

22 The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy Spirit. Grace be with you, Amen.

¶ The second Epistle written from Rome unto Timothy, the first Bishop elected of the Church of Ephesus, when Paul was presented the second time before the Emperor Nero.

Footnotes

  1. 2 Timothy 4:1 The principal and chief of all admonitions, being therefore proposed with a most earnest charge, is this: That the word of God be propounded with a certain holy importunity, as necessity requireth: but so, that a good and true ground of the doctrine be laid, and the vehemency be tempered with all holy meekness.
  2. 2 Timothy 4:3 Faithful Pastors in times past took all occasions they could, because men were very prompt and ready to return to their fables.
  3. 2 Timothy 4:4 To false and unprofitable doctrines, which the world is now so bewitched withal, that it had rather the open light of the truth were utterly put out, when it would come out of darkness.
  4. 2 Timothy 4:5 The wickedness and falling away of the world, ought to cause faithful ministers to be so much the more careful.
  5. 2 Timothy 4:5 Prove and show by good and substantial proof, that thou art the true minister of God.
  6. 2 Timothy 4:6 He foretelleth his death to be at hand, and setteth before them an excellent example, both of invincible constancy and sure hope.
  7. 2 Timothy 4:6 To be offered for a drink offering: and he alludeth to the pouring out of blood or wine which was used in sacrifices.
  8. 2 Timothy 4:9 The last part of the Epistle, setting forth grievous complaints against certain, and examples of singular godliness in every place, and of a mind never wearied.
  9. 2 Timothy 4:10 Contented himself with this world.
  10. 2 Timothy 4:17 Of Nero.
  11. 2 Timothy 4:18 Preserve me pure from committing anything unworthy my Apostleship.
  12. 2 Timothy 4:18 To make me partaker of his kingdom.

I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: 10 for Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry. 12 And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus. 13 The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments.

14 Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works: 15 of whom be thou ware also; for he hath greatly withstood our words. 16 At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge. 17 Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. 18 And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

19 Salute Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus.

20 Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick. 21 Do thy diligence to come before winter.

Eubulus greeteth thee, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren.

22 The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.
