Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind,(A) go ahead and do it, for the Lord is with you.”

But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying:

“Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: Are you(B) the one to build me a house to dwell in?(C) I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day.(D) I have been moving from place to place with a tent(E) as my dwelling.(F) Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites,(G) did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd(H) my people Israel, “Why have you not built me a house(I) of cedar?(J)”’

“Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock,(K) and appointed you ruler(L) over my people Israel.(M) I have been with you wherever you have gone,(N) and I have cut off all your enemies from before you.(O) Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth.(P) 10 And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant(Q) them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed.(R) Wicked(S) people will not oppress them anymore,(T) as they did at the beginning 11 and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders[a](U) over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies.(V)

“‘The Lord declares(W) to you that the Lord himself will establish(X) a house(Y) for you: 12 When your days are over and you rest(Z) with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood,(AA) and I will establish his kingdom.(AB) 13 He is the one who will build a house(AC) for my Name,(AD) and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.(AE)

  1. 2 Samuel 7:11 Traditionally judges

And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the Lord is with thee.

And it came to pass that night, that the word of the Lord came unto Nathan, saying,

Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the Lord, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in?

Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.

In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house of cedar?

Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:

And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.

10 Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime,

11 And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the Lord telleth thee that he will make thee an house.

12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.

13 He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.
