Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have taken with us the even-faith [to them that have taken with us the even much faith], in the rightwiseness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ,

grace and peace be filled to you, by the knowing of our Lord Jesus Christ. [grace to you, and peace be full-filled, in the knowing of our Lord Jesus Christ.]

How all things of his god-like virtue, that be to life and piety [that be into life and piety], be given to us, by the knowing of him, that called us for his own glory and virtue.

By whom he gave to us most [and] precious promises; that by these things ye shall be made fellows of God's kind, and flee the corruption of that covetousness [fleeing the corruption of that covetousness], that is in the world.

And bring ye in all busyness, and minister in your faith virtue, and in virtue knowing [soothly in virtue science, or knowing];

in knowing abstinence [in science soothly abstinence], in abstinence patience, in patience piety;

in piety, love of brotherhood, and in love of brotherhood charity.

For if these be with you, and overcome [and overcome, or be plenteous], they shall not make you void, neither without fruit [nor without fruit], in the knowing of our Lord Jesus Christ.

But to whom these be not ready, he is blind, and gropeth with his hand, and forgetteth the purging of his old trespasses.

10 Wherefore, brethren, be ye more busy [more busy ye], that by good works ye make your calling and choosing certain; for ye doing these things shall not do sin any time [soothly ye doing these things, shall not sin any time].

11 For thus the entering into [the] everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, shall be ministered to you plenteously.

12 For which thing I shall begin to admonish you evermore of these things; and I will that ye be knowing, and confirmed in this present truth.

13 Forsooth I deem justly [Forsooth I deem just], as long as I am in this tabernacle, to raise you in admonishing;

14 and I am certain, that the putting away [for the putting off] of my tabernacle is swift, by this that our Lord Jesus Christ hath showed to me.

15 But I shall give busyness, that oft after my death ye have mind of these things.

16 For we not following unwise tales, have made known to you the virtue and the before-knowing [the virtue and prescience, or before-knowing,] of our Lord Jesus Christ; but we were made beholders of his greatness [but made beholders of his greatness].

17 For he took of God the Father honour and glory, by such manner voice slid down to him from the great glory, This is my loved Son, in whom I have pleased to me; hear ye him.

18 And we heard this voice brought from heaven, when we were with him in the holy hill.

19 And we have a firmer word of prophecy, to which ye giving attention do well, as to a lantern that giveth light in a dark place, till the day begin to give light, and the day star spring in your hearts.

20 And first understand ye this thing, that each prophecy of scripture is not made by proper interpretation; [First understanding this thing, that each prophecy of scripture is not made by proper, or own, interpretation;]

21 for prophecy was not brought any time by man's will, but the holy men of God inspired with the Holy Ghost spake.

Since God by his power has given them all things pertaining to life, he exhorts them to flee the corruption of worldly lust, and to make their calling sure with good works and fruits of faith. He makes mention of his own death, declaring the Lord to be the true Son of God, as he himself saw upon the mount.

Simon peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained like precious faith with us in the righteousness that comes of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Grace be with you, and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who has called us by virtue and glory, by the means whereof are given to us excellent and most great promises, so that by the help of them you may be partakers of the divine nature, in that you flee the corruption of worldly lust.

And give all diligence to this. To your faith add virtue, and to virtue knowledge, and to knowledge temperance, and to temperance patience, to patience godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, to brotherly kindness love. For if these things be among you and abound, they will make you so that you will neither be idle nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he who lacks these things is blind, and gropes for the way with his hands, and has forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

10 Therefore, brethren, give the more diligence to make your calling and election sure. For if you do such things, you shall never err. 11 Yea, and by this means a grand entering in will be given you into the ever-lasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

12 And so I will not be negligent to put you always in mind of such things, though you know them yourselves, and are also established in the present truth. 13 Notwithstanding, I think it right, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance. 14 For I am sure that the time is at hand that I must put off my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me. 15 I will do my best to ensure, therefore, that on every side you have something with which to stir up the remembrance of these things after my departing.

16 For we were not following deceitful fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but with our own eyes we saw his majesty – 17 even then truly when he received from God the Father honour and glory, and when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory: This is my dear beloved Son, in whom I have delight. 18 This voice we heard when it came from heaven, being with him in the holy mount.

19 We have also a right sure word of prophecy, to which, if you take heed as to a light that shines in a dark place, you do well, until the day dawns and the day star arises in your hearts.  20 And first understand this: that no prophecy in the scripture has any private interpretation. 21 For the scripture never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

The Second Epistle General of Peter

3 Having spoken of the bountifulness of God, 5 and of the virtues of faith. 6 He exhorteth them to holiness of life. 12 And that his counsel may be the more effectual. 14 He showeth that his death is at hand, 16 and that himself did see the power of Christ, which he opened unto them.

Simon [a]Peter a servant and an Apostle of Jesus Christ, to you which have obtained like precious faith with us by the [b]righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ.

Grace and peace be multiplied to you, [c]through the acknowledging of God, and of Jesus Christ our Lord,

[d]According as his [e]divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto [f]life and godliness, through the [g]acknowledging of him that hath called us unto glory and virtue.

[h]Whereby most great and precious promises are given unto us, that by them ye should be partakers of the [i]divine nature, in that ye flee the corruption, which is in the [j]world through [k]lust.

[l]Therefore give even all diligence thereunto: [m]join moreover virtue with your faith: and with virtue, knowledge:

[n]And with knowledge, temperance: and with temperance, patience: and with patience, godliness:

And with godliness, brotherly kindness: and with brotherly kindness, love.

[o]For if these things be among you, and abound, they will make you that ye neither shall be idle, nor unfruitful in the acknowledging of our Lord Jesus Christ:

For he that hath not these things, is blind, and [p]cannot see far off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

10 [q]Wherefore, brethren, give rather diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall.

11 For by this means an entering shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

12 [r]Wherefore, I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though that ye have knowledge, and be established in the present truth.

13 For I think it meet as long as I am in this [s]tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance,

14 Seeing I know that the time is at hand that I must lay down this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath (A)showed me.

15 (B)I will endeavor therefore always, that ye also may be able to have remembrance of these things after my departing.

16 (C)[t]For we followed not deceivable fables, when we opened unto you the power, and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but with our eyes we saw his majesty:

17 For he received of God the Father honor and glory, when there came such a voice to him from that excellent Glory, (D)This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

18 And this voice we heard when it came from heaven being with him in the holy mount.

19 [u]We have also a most sure word of the Prophets, [v]to the which ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the [w]day dawns, and the [x]day star arise in your hearts.

20 (E)[y]So that ye first know this, that no prophecy of the [z]Scripture is of any [aa]private interpretation:

21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but [ab]holy men of God spake as they were [ac]moved by the holy Ghost.

  8. 2 Peter 1:4 An explication of the former sentence, declaring the causes of so great benefits, to wit, God and his free promise, from whence all these benefits proceed, I say, these most excellent benefits, whereby we are delivered from the corruption of the world, (that is, from the wicked lusts which we carry about us) and are made, after a sort, like unto God himself.
  9. 2 Peter 1:4 By the divine nature, he meaneth not the substance of the Godhead, but the partaking of these qualities whereby the image of God is restored in us.

  12. 2 Peter 1:5 Having laid the foundation (that is, having declared the causes of our salvation and especially of our sanctification) now he beginneth to exhort us to give our minds wholly to the true use of this grace. And he beginneth with faith without which nothing can please God, and he warneth us to have it full fraught with virtue (that is to say) with good and godly manners, being joined with the knowledge of God’s will, without which there is neither faith neither any true virtue.
  13. 2 Peter 1:5 Supply also, and support or aid.
  14. 2 Peter 1:6 He reckoneth up certain and other principal virtues, whereof some pertain to the first Table of the Law, others to the last.
  15. 2 Peter 1:8 As those fruits do spring from the true knowledge of Christ, so in like sort the knowledge itself is fostered, and groweth by bringing forth such fruits, insomuch that he that is unfruitful did either never know the true light, or hath forgotten the gift of sanctification which he hath received.
  16. 2 Peter 1:9 He that hath not an effectual knowledge of God in him, is blind as touching the kingdom of God, for he cannot see things that are afar off, that is to say, heavenly things.

  18. 2 Peter 1:12 An amplifying of the conclusion joined with a modest excuse, wherein he declareth his love towards them, and foretelleth them of his death, which is at hand.
  19. 2 Peter 1:13 In this body.
  20. 2 Peter 1:16 Another amplification taken both of the great certainty and also excellency of this doctrine, as whereof our Lord Jesus Christ the Son of God is author, whose glory the Apostle himself both saw and heard.
  21. 2 Peter 1:19 The truth of the Gospel is hereby also manifest, in that it agreeth wholly with the foretellings of the Prophets.
  22. 2 Peter 1:19 The doctrine of the Apostles doth not shut out the doctrine of the Prophets, for they confirm each other by each other’s testimonies, but the Prophets were as candles which gave light unto the blind, until the brightness of the Gospel began to shine.
  23. 2 Peter 1:19 A more full and open knowledge than was under the shadows of the Law.
  24. 2 Peter 1:19 That clearer doctrine of the Gospel.
  25. 2 Peter 1:20 The Prophets are to be read, but so that we ask of God the gift of interpretation: for he that is the author of the writings of the Prophets, is also the interpreter of them.
  26. 2 Peter 1:20 He joineth the Scripture and prophecy together to distinguish true prophecies from false.
  27. 2 Peter 1:20 For all interpretation cometh from God.
  28. 2 Peter 1:21 The godly interpreters and messengers.
  29. 2 Peter 1:21 Inspired of God: and these their motions were in very good order, and not such as were the motions of the profane soothsayers, and foretellers of things to come.
