that you should remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets and the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior: knowing this first, that in the last days mockers will come, walking after their own lusts and saying, “Where is the promise of his coming? For, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” For this they willfully forget that there were heavens from of old, and an earth formed out of water and amid water by the word of God, by which means the world that existed then, being overflowed with water, perished. But the heavens that exist now and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

But don’t forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but he is patient with us, not wishing that anyone should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11 Therefore since all these things will be destroyed like this, what kind of people ought you to be in holy living and godliness, 12 looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, which will cause the burning heavens to be dissolved, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 But, according to his promise, we look for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets(A) and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.(B)

Above all, you must understand that in the last days(C) scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.(D) They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised?(E) Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”(F) But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word(G) the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.(H) By these waters also the world of that time(I) was deluged and destroyed.(J) By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire,(K) being kept for the day of judgment(L) and destruction of the ungodly.

But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.(M) The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise,(N) as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient(O) with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.(P)

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.(Q) The heavens will disappear with a roar;(R) the elements will be destroyed by fire,(S) and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.[a](T)

11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward(U) to the day of God and speed its coming.[b](V) That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.(W) 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth,(X) where righteousness dwells.

21 I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth have passed away, and the sea is no more. I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband. I heard a loud voice out of heaven saying, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with people, and he will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.”

He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” He said, “Write, for these words of God are faithful and true.”

A New Heaven and a New Earth

21 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”[a](A) for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away,(B) and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City,(C) the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,(D) prepared as a bride(E) beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them.(F) They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.(G) ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes.(H) There will be no more death’[b](I) or mourning or crying or pain,(J) for the old order of things has passed away.”(K)

He who was seated on the throne(L) said, “I am making everything new!”(M) Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”(N)
