Athaliah Reigns over Judah

11 (A)Now Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son had died. So she rose and caused all the royal seed to perish. But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, (B)took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him from among the king’s sons who were being put to death, and put him and his nurse in the bedroom. So they hid him from Athaliah, and he was not put to death. So he was hidden away with her in the house of Yahweh six years, while Athaliah was reigning over the land.

(C)Now in the seventh year Jehoiada sent for and took the commanders of hundreds of (D)the Carites and of the [a]guard, and brought them to him in the house of Yahweh. Then he cut a covenant with them and had them swear in the house of Yahweh, and showed them the king’s son. And he commanded them, saying, “This is the thing that you shall do: (E)one-third of you, who come in on the sabbath and keep watch over the king’s house (one-third also shall be at the gate Sur, and one-third at the gate behind the [b]guards), [c]shall keep watch over the house for defense. And two parts of you, even all who go out on the sabbath, shall also keep watch over the house of Yahweh for the king. And you shall surround the king, each with his weapons in his hand; and whoever comes within the ranks shall be put to death. And (F)be with the king when he goes out and when he comes in.”

So the commanders of hundreds (G)did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded. And each one of them took his men who were to come in on the sabbath, with those who were to go out on the sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest. 10 (H)Then the priest gave to the commanders of hundreds the spears and small shields that had been King David’s, which were in the house of Yahweh. 11 And the [d]guards stood each with his weapons in his hand, from the right [e]side of the house to the left [f]side of the house, by the altar and by the house, around the king. 12 Then he brought the king’s son out and (I)put the crown on him and gave him (J)the testimony; and they made him king and anointed him, and they clapped their hands and said, “(K)Long live the king!”

13 (L)Then Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, and she came to the people in the house of Yahweh. 14 And she looked, and behold, the king was standing (M)by the pillar, according to the custom, with the commanders and the [g]trumpeters beside the king; and (N)all the people of the land were glad and blew trumpets. Then Athaliah (O)tore her clothes and cried, “(P)Treason! Treason!” 15 And Jehoiada the priest commanded the commanders of hundreds who were appointed over the military force and said to them, “Bring her out [h]between the ranks, and whoever follows her put to death with the sword.” For the priest said, “Let her not be put to death in the house of Yahweh.” 16 So they [i]laid hands on her, and she arrived at the horses’ entrance of the king’s house and was (Q)put to death there.

17 Then (R)Jehoiada cut a covenant between Yahweh and the king and the people, that they would be the people of Yahweh, also (S)between the king and the people. 18 And all the people of the land came to (T)the house of Baal and tore it down; (U)his altars and his images they broke in pieces thoroughly, and they (V)killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed [j]overseers over the house of Yahweh. 19 And he took the commanders of hundreds and the (W)Carites and the [k]guards and all the people of the land; and they brought the king down from the house of Yahweh, and came by the way of (X)the gate of the [l]guards to the king’s house. And he sat on the throne of the kings. 20 So (Y)all the people of the land were glad, and the city was quiet. For they had put Athaliah to death with the sword at the king’s house.

Athaliah Seizes Control

11 When Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, saw that her son was dead, she went into action and destroyed all the royal heirs.[a] But Jehosheba, King Joram’s daughter and Ahaziah’s sister, took Joash, the son of Ahaziah. She stole him away from among the king’s sons, who were to be killed. She put him and his nurse in a bedroom. He was kept hidden from Athaliah so that he was not killed. He was kept hidden with her in the House of the Lord for six years while Athaliah was ruling over the land.

Jehoiada Makes Joash King

In the seventh year, Jehoiada sent a message and summoned the officers in charge of the units[b] of the Carians[c] and the guards to meet him at the House of the Lord. He made a covenant with them and had them swear an oath in the House of the Lord. Then he showed them the king’s son.

He commanded them, “This is how you will deploy: A third of you who are coming on duty on the Sabbath are to guard the palace of the king. Another third will be stationed at the Sur Gate,[d] and the final third at the gate behind the guards who take turns protecting this temple.[e] The two divisions of you who are going off duty on the Sabbath will protect the House of the Lord, together with the king.[f] You will surround the king on all sides, every man with his weapons in his hand. Anyone who comes into the ranks will be put to death. You will accompany the king when he goes out and when he comes in.”

So the officers of the companies did just as Jehoiada the priest commanded. Each one took his men, those coming on duty on the Sabbath with those going off duty on the Sabbath, and they came to Jehoiada the priest. 10 The priest gave the officers in charge of the units the spears and shields which had belonged to King David and which were in the House of the Lord. 11 So the guards, each one with his weapon in his hand, stood around the king from the south side of the temple to the north side, near the altar of the temple. 12 Then Jehoiada brought out the king’s son and set the crown on him and gave him the Testimony,[g] and they made him king. They anointed him and clapped their hands and said, “Long live the king!”

Athaliah’s Death

13 When Athaliah heard the noise of the guards and the people, she went to them in the House of the Lord. 14 She looked, and there was the king standing beside the pillar according to the custom, and the officers and the trumpeters were in front of the king, and all the people of the land were celebrating and blowing trumpets. Then Athaliah tore her clothes and cried, “Treason! Treason!”

15 Then Jehoiada the priest commanded the officers in charge of the units of the army, “Bring her out between the ranks! Anyone who follows her is to be put to death with the sword!”

Because the priest had said, “She is not to be killed in the House of the Lord,” 16 they laid hands on her as she was going through the passageway where the horses enter the king’s palace, and they killed her there.

17 Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and the king and people that they would be the Lord’s people. He also made a covenant between the king and the people. 18 Then all the people of the land went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They smashed its altar and its idols till they were dust. They also killed Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars. Then the priest posted a watch over the House of the Lord.

19 Then he took the officers of the companies and the Carians and the guards and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the House of the Lord. They entered the king’s palace through the gate of the guards. Then he sat on the throne of the kings. 20 All the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet. Athaliah had been put to death with the sword in the king’s palace.

21 Joash was seven years old when he became king.
