5 And we know, that if our earthly house of this dwelling be dissolved, that we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, everlasting in heavens.
2 For why in this thing we mourn, coveting to be clothed above with our dwelling, which is of heaven;
3 if nevertheless we be found clothed, and not naked.
4 For why we that be in this tabernacle, sorrow within, and be heavied [grieved], for that we will not be spoiled, but be clothed above; that that thing that is deadly, be swallowed up of life[a].
5 But who is it that maketh us into this same thing? God, that gave to us the earnest of the Spirit. [Forsooth he that maketh us into this same thing, is God, that gave to us the earnest of Spirit.]
6 Therefore we be hardy always, and know that the while we be in this body, we go in pilgrimage from the Lord;[b]
7 for we walk by faith, and not by clear sight.
8 But we be hardy [Forsooth we be hardy], and have good will, more to be in pilgrimage from the body, and to be present to God.
9 And therefore we strive, whether absent, whether present, to please him.
10 For it behooveth us all to be showed before the throne of Christ, that every man tell the proper things of the body[c], as he hath done, either good, either evil.
11 Therefore we witting the dread of the Lord, counsel men, for to God we be open; and I hope, that we be open also in your consciences.
12 We commend not us selves again to you, but we give to you occasion to have glory for us [We commend not ourselves again to you, but we give to you occasion to glory for us], that ye have [understanding] to them that glory in the face, and not in the heart.
13 For either we by mind pass to God, either we be sober to you. [Soothly whether we by mind, or reason, pass it is to God, whether we be sober it is to you?]
14 For the charity of Christ driveth us; guessing this thing [guessing, or deeming, this thing], that if one died for all, then all were dead.
15 And Christ died for all, that they that live, live not now to themselves, but to him that died for them, and rose again.
16 Therefore we from this time know no man after the flesh; though we (have) known Christ after the flesh [And so we from this time have known no man after the flesh; and if we knew Christ after the flesh], but [right] now we know not.
17 Therefore if any new creature is in Christ, the old things be passed [old things have passed]. Lo! all things be made new,
18 and all things be of God, which reconciled us to him by Christ, and gave to us the service of reconciling [and gave to us the ministry, or service, of reconciling].
19 And God was in Christ [Soothly, for God was in Christ], reconciling to him the world, not reckoning to them their guilts, and putted in us the word of reconciling [and put in us the word of reconciling].
20 Therefore we use message for Christ [Therefore we be set in legacy, or message, for Christ], as if God admonisheth by us; we beseech you for Christ, be ye reconciled to God.
21 God the Father made him sin for us, which knew not sin, that we should be made [the] rightwiseness of God in him.

5 We know surely that if our earthly abode, the tabernacle we now dwell in, were destroyed, we have an abode prepared by God: a habitation not made with hands, but eternal in heaven. 2 And for this we sigh, desiring to be clothed with our dwelling which is from heaven – 3 if yet we be found clothed, and not naked. 4 For as long as we are in this tabernacle, we sigh and are grieved. For we would not be unclothed, but would be clothed upon, so that mortality may be swallowed up by life.
5 He who has ordained us for this thing is God, the very same who has given to us the earnest of the Spirit. 6 Therefore we are always of good cheer. And we know well that as long as we are at home in the body, we are away from God. 7 For we walk in faith, and see not. 8 Nevertheless, we are of good comfort – and yet would rather be away from the body, and be present with the Lord.
9 And so whether we are at home or away from home, we endeavour to please him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that every person may receive the works of his body, according to what he has done, whether it be good or bad. 11 Seeing then that we know how the Lord is to be feared, we fare fair with men. For we are known well enough to God.
I trust also that we are known in your consciences. 12 We are not praising ourselves again to you, but give you reason to have confidence in us, so that you may have something to answer to those who put confidence in the face, and not in the heart. 13 For if we are too fervent, it is for God that we are too fervent. If we are restrained, it is for your sakes that we show restraint.
14 For the love of Christ constrains us, because we judge this way: if one is dead for all, then all are dead; 15 and that he died for all so that those who live should henceforth live not for themselves, but for him who died for them and rose again. 16 And so henceforth we know no man after the flesh, insomuch that even if we have known Christ after the flesh, now henceforth we know him this way no more. 17 Therefore if any person is in Christ, he is a new creature. Old things have passed away: behold, all things are become new.
18 Nevertheless, all things are of God, who has reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and has given to us the office to preach the atonement. 19 For God was in Christ, and made agreement between the world and himself, and did not impute people’s sins to them. And he has committed to us the preaching of the atonement. 20 Now then, we are messengers in the place of Christ, even as though God did beseech you through us. So we entreat you in Christ’s stead to be at one with God. 21 For he has made him who knew no sin to be a sin offering for us, so that we, by means of him, should be that righteousness which is accepted before God.

5 1 He continueth in the same argument, 5 touching the certain hope of salvation 7 through faith, 12 not to praise himself, 14 seeing he hath God and his Church before his eyes, 17 and esteemeth nothing, but newness of life in Christ.

12 [o]For we praise not ourselves again unto you, but give you an occasion to rejoice of us that ye may have to answer against them, which rejoice in the [p]face, and not in the heart.
13 [q]For whether we be out of our wit, we are it to God: or whether we be in our right mind, we are it unto you.

15 Because we thus judge, that if [t]one be dead for all, then were all dead, and he died for all, that they which live, should not henceforth [u]live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

- 2 Corinthians 5:1 Taking occasion by the former comparison, he compareth this miserable body, as it is in this life, to a frail and brickle tabernacle, against which he setteth the heavenly Tabernacle, so terming that sure and everlasting condition of this same body glorified in heaven, insomuch, saith he, that we are not only not addicted to this tabernacle, but also do with sobs and sighs desire rather that tabernacle. And so this place also concerning the glory to come, is put within the treatise of the dignity of the ministry, as the other was, whereof we spake in the beginning of the second Chapter.
- 2 Corinthians 5:2 He calleth the glory of immortality, which we shall be as it were clothed with, a garment.

- 2 Corinthians 5:3 An exposition of the former saying: We do not without cause, desire to be clad with the heavenly house, that is, with that everlasting and immortal glory, as with a garment: for when we depart hence, we shall not remain naked, having once cast off the covering of this body, but we shall take our bodies again, which shall put on as it were another garment besides: and therefore we sigh not for the weariness of this life, but for the desire of a better life. Neither is this desire in vain, for we are made to that life, the pledge whereof we have, even the Spirit of adoption.
- 2 Corinthians 5:5 He meaneth that first creation, to give us to understand, that our bodies were made to this end, that they should be clothed with heavenly immortality.
