7 Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and of spirit, making holiness perfect in the fear of God.
Paul’s Joy at the Church’s Repentance
2 Make room in your hearts[a] for us; we have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have taken advantage of no one. 3 I do not say this to condemn you, for I said before that you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together. 4 I often boast about you; I have great pride in you; I am filled with consolation; I am overjoyed in all our affliction.
5 For even when we came into Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were afflicted in every way—disputes without and fears within. 6 But God, who consoles the downcast, consoled us by the arrival of Titus, 7 and not only by his coming, but also by the consolation with which he was consoled about you, as he told us of your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced still more. 8 For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it (though I did regret it, for I see that I grieved you with that letter, though only briefly). 9 Now I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because your grief led to repentance; for you felt a godly grief, so that you were not harmed in any way by us. 10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation and brings no regret, but worldly grief produces death. 11 For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves guiltless in the matter. 12 So although I wrote to you, it was not on account of the one who did the wrong, nor on account of the one who was wronged, but in order that your zeal for us might be made known to you before God. 13 In this we find comfort.
In addition to our own consolation, we rejoiced still more at the joy of Titus, because his mind has been set at rest by all of you. 14 For if I have been somewhat boastful about you to him, I was not disgraced; but just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting to Titus has proved true as well. 15 And his heart goes out all the more to you, as he remembers the obedience of all of you, and how you welcomed him with fear and trembling. 16 I rejoice, because I have complete confidence in you.

2 (A)Fateci posto nei vostri cuori[a]! Noi non abbiamo fatto torto a nessuno, non abbiamo rovinato nessuno, non abbiamo sfruttato nessuno. 3 Non lo dico per condannarvi, perché ho già detto prima che voi siete nei nostri cuori per la morte e per la vita[b]. 4 Grande è la franchezza che uso con voi e molto ho da vantarmi di voi; sono pieno di consolazione, sovrabbondo di gioia in ogni nostra tribolazione. 5 Da quando siamo giunti in Macedonia, infatti, la nostra carne non ha avuto nessun sollievo, anzi, siamo stati tribolati in ogni maniera; combattimenti di fuori, timori di dentro. 6 Ma Dio, che consola gli afflitti, ci consolò con l’arrivo di Tito[c]; 7 e non soltanto con il suo arrivo, ma anche con la consolazione da lui ricevuta in mezzo a voi. Egli ci ha raccontato il vostro vivo desiderio di vedermi, il vostro pianto, la vostra premura per me; così mi sono più che mai rallegrato.
8 Anche se vi ho rattristati con la mia lettera, non me ne rincresce; e se pure ne ho provato rincrescimento (poiché vedo che quella lettera, quantunque per breve tempo, vi ha rattristati), 9 ora mi rallegro, non perché siete stati rattristati, ma perché questa tristezza vi ha portati al ravvedimento; poiché siete stati rattristati secondo Dio, in modo che non aveste a ricevere alcun danno da noi. 10 Perché la tristezza secondo Dio produce un ravvedimento che porta alla salvezza, del quale non c’è mai da pentirsi; ma la tristezza del mondo produce la morte. 11 Infatti, ecco quanta premura ha prodotto in voi questa vostra tristezza secondo Dio, anzi, quante scuse, quanto sdegno, quanto timore, quanto desiderio, quanto zelo, quale punizione! In ogni maniera avete dimostrato di essere puri in questo affare.
12 Se dunque vi ho scritto, non fu a motivo dell’offensore né dell’offeso, ma perché la premura che avete per noi si manifestasse in mezzo a voi davanti a Dio. 13 Perciò siamo stati consolati; e oltre a questa nostra consolazione ci siamo più che mai rallegrati per la gioia di Tito, perché il suo spirito è stato rinfrancato da voi tutti. 14 Anche se mi ero un po’ vantato di voi con lui, non ne sono stato deluso; ma come tutto ciò che vi abbiamo detto era verità, così anche il nostro vanto con Tito è risultato verità. 15 Ed egli vi ama più che mai intensamente, perché ricorda l’ubbidienza di voi tutti e come lo avete accolto con timore e tremore. 16 Mi rallegro perché in ogni cosa posso avere fiducia in voi.

Freude des Apostels über die Reue in der Gemeinde
2 Gebt uns Raum [in euren Herzen]: Wir haben niemand Unrecht getan, niemand geschädigt, niemand übervorteilt.
3 Ich erwähne das nicht, um zu verurteilen; denn ich habe vorhin gesagt, dass ihr in unseren Herzen seid, sodass wir mit [euch] sterben und mit [euch] leben.
4 Ich bin sehr freimütig euch gegenüber und rühme euch viel. Ich bin mit Trost erfüllt, ich fließe über von Freude bei all unserer Bedrängnis.
5 Denn als wir nach Mazedonien kamen, hatte unser Fleisch keine Ruhe, sondern wir wurden auf alle Art bedrängt, von außen Kämpfe, von innen Ängste.
6 Aber Gott, der die Geringen tröstet, er tröstete uns durch die Ankunft des Titus;
7 und nicht allein durch seine Ankunft, sondern auch durch den Trost, den er bei euch empfangen hatte. Als er uns berichtete von eurer Sehnsucht, eurer Klage, eurem Eifer für mich, da freute ich mich noch mehr.
8 Denn wenn ich euch auch durch den Brief betrübt habe, so bereue ich es nicht, wenn ich es auch bereut habe; denn ich sehe, dass euch jener Brief betrübt hat, wenn auch nur für eine Stunde.
9 Nun freue ich mich — nicht darüber, dass ihr betrübt wurdet, sondern darüber, dass ihr zur Buße betrübt worden seid; denn ihr seid in gottgewollter Weise betrübt worden,[a] sodass ihr von uns keinerlei Schaden genommen habt.
10 Denn die gottgewollte Betrübnis bewirkt eine Buße zum Heil, die man nicht bereuen muss; die Betrübnis der Welt aber bewirkt den Tod.
11 Denn siehe, wie viel ernstes Bemühen hat dies bei euch bewirkt, dass ihr in gottgewollter Weise betrübt worden seid, dazu Verantwortung, Entrüstung, Furcht, Verlangen, Eifer, Bestrafung! Ihr habt in jeder Hinsicht bewiesen, dass ihr in der Sache rein seid.
12 Wenn ich euch also geschrieben habe, so geschah es nicht um dessentwillen, der Unrecht getan hat, auch nicht um dessentwillen, dem Unrecht geschehen ist, sondern damit unser Eifer für euch zu euren Gunsten offenbar würde vor dem Angesicht Gottes.
13 Deswegen sind wir getröstet worden in eurem Trost; wir haben uns aber noch viel mehr über die Freude des Titus gefreut, denn sein Geist ist von euch allen erquickt worden.
14 Denn wenn ich euch ihm gegenüber gerühmt habe, bin ich damit nicht zuschanden geworden, sondern wie wir euch gegenüber stets die Wahrheit gesprochen haben, so ist auch unser Rühmen dem Titus gegenüber wahr geworden;
15 und sein Herz ist euch jetzt noch viel mehr zugetan, da er sich an den Gehorsam von euch allen erinnert, wie ihr ihn mit Furcht und Zittern aufgenommen habt.
16 Ich freue mich nun, dass ich mich in allem auf euch verlassen kann.

7 Mivel tehát ilyen ígéreteink vannak, szeretteim, tisztítsuk meg magunkat minden testi és lelki tisztátalanságtól, és Isten félelmében tegyük teljessé a mi megszentelődésünket.
2 Fogadjatok be minket: senkit nem bántottunk, senkit nem károsítottunk meg, senkit nem csaltunk meg.
3 Nem vádképpen mondom, hiszen az előbb mondottam, hogy szívünkben vagytok, hogy együtt éljünk, és együtt haljunk.
4 Nagy a bizalmam irántatok, sok dicsekedni valóm van veletek, tele vagyok vigasztalódással, minden nyomorúságunk ellenére csordultig vagyok örömmel.
Titusz jó hírei a gyülekezetről
5 Mert amikor megérkeztünk Macedóniába, semmi nyugalma sem volt testünknek, hanem mindenféleképpen gyötrődtünk: kívül harcok, belül félelmek.
6 De Isten, a megalázottak vigasztalója, megvigasztalt minket Titusz megérkezésével;
7 de nemcsak az ő megérkezésével, hanem azzal a vigasztalással is, amellyel ő nálatok megvigasztalódott. Hírül hozta ugyanis nekünk a ti vágyódásotokat, a ti kesergéseteket, a ti hozzám való ragaszkodásotokat, úgyhogy még jobban megörültem.
A gyülekezet Isten szerinti megszomorodása
8 Mert ha megszomorítottalak is titeket azzal a levéllel, nem bánom. Bántam ugyan, látva hogy az a levél, ha egy kis időre is, megszomorított titeket,
9 de most már örülök. Nem annak, hogy megszomorodtatok, hanem hogy megtérésre szomorodtatok meg: mert Isten szerint szomorodtatok meg, és miattunk semmiben nem vallotok kárt.
10 Mert az Isten szerinti szomorúság megbánhatatlan megtérést szerez az üdvösségre, a világ szerinti szomorúság pedig halált szerez.
11 Mert éppen az, hogy Isten szerint szomorodtatok meg, mekkora buzgóságot keltett bennetek, sőt mentegetőzést, sőt méltatlankodást, sőt félelmet, sőt vágyódást, sőt ragaszkodást, sőt a vétkes megbüntetését! Mindenképpen igazoltátok, hogy tiszták vagytok az ügyben.
12 Ha tehát írtam is nektek, nem a sértő miatt, és nem is a sértett érdekében írtam, hanem azért, hogy nyilvánvalóvá legyen buzgóságotok, amely az Isten színe előtt van bennetek irántunk.
13 Ezért tehát megvigasztalódtunk, de megvigasztalódásunkon túl még jobban örültünk Titusz örömének, hiszen ti mindnyájan megnyugtattátok a lelkét.
14 Mert ha egy kissé eldicsekedtem neki veletek, nem szégyenültem meg, hanem amint mindent az igazsághoz híven mondtunk el nektek, úgy Titusz előtt való dicsekedésünk is igaznak bizonyult.
15 Az ő szíve még jobban felétek fordul, amikor visszaemlékezik mindnyájatok engedelmességére, amint félve és aggódva fogadtátok őt.
16 Örülök, hogy minden tekintetben bízhatom bennetek.
