Paul’s Sufferings for Christ

16 I repeat: Let no one consider me a fool. But if you do, at least accept me as a fool so that I can also boast a little. 17 What I am saying in this matter[a] of boasting, I don’t speak as the Lord would, but as it were, foolishly. 18 Since many boast according to the flesh, I will also boast. 19 For you, being so wise, gladly put up with fools!(A) 20 In fact, you put up with it if someone enslaves you, if someone exploits(B) you, if someone takes advantage of you, if someone is arrogant toward you, if someone slaps(C) you in the face. 21 I say this to our shame: We have been too weak for that!

But in whatever anyone dares to boast—I am talking foolishly—I also dare: 22 Are they Hebrews?(D) So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they the descendants of Abraham?(E) So am I. 23 Are they servants of Christ? I’m talking like a madman—I’m a better one: with far more labors, many more imprisonments, far worse beatings, many times near death.

24 Five times I received the forty lashes minus one from the Jews.(F) 25 Three times I was beaten with rods.(G) Once I received a stoning.(H) Three times I was shipwrecked.(I) I have spent a night and a day in the open sea. 26 On frequent journeys, I faced dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers,(J) dangers from my own people,(K) dangers from Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers at sea, and dangers among false brothers; 27 toil and hardship, many sleepless nights, hunger and thirst, often without food, cold, and without clothing.(L) 28 Not to mention[b] other things, there is the daily pressure on me: my concern for all the churches. 29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble,(M) and I do not burn with indignation?

30 If boasting is necessary, I will boast about my weaknesses. 31 The God and Father(N) of the Lord Jesus, who is blessed forever, knows I am not lying. 32 In Damascus,(O) a ruler[c] under King Aretas guarded the city of Damascus in order to arrest me. 33 So I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall and escaped from his hands.(P)

Sufficient Grace

12 Boasting is necessary. It is not profitable, but I will move on to visions(Q) and revelations(R) of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who was caught up(S) to the third heaven fourteen years ago. Whether he was in the body or out of the body, I don’t know; God knows. I know that this man—whether in the body or out of the body I don’t know; God knows— was caught up into paradise(T) and heard inexpressible words, which a human being is not allowed to speak. I will boast about this person, but not about myself, except of my weaknesses.

For if I want to boast, I wouldn’t be a fool, because I would be telling the truth.(U) But I will spare you, so that no one can credit me with something beyond what he sees in me or hears from me, especially because of the extraordinary revelations. Therefore, so that I would not exalt myself, a thorn in the flesh(V) was given to me, a messenger of Satan(W) to torment me so that I would not exalt myself. Concerning this, I pleaded with the Lord three times that it would leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power(X) is perfected in weakness.”(Y)

Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me. 10 So I take pleasure in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and in difficulties, for the sake of Christ.(Z) For when I am weak, then I am strong.(AA)

Signs of an Apostle

11 I have been a fool; you forced it on me. You ought to have commended me, since I am not in any way inferior to those “super-apostles,” even though I am nothing.(AB) 12 The signs(AC) of an apostle(AD) were performed with unfailing endurance among you, including signs and wonders(AE) and miracles.(AF) 13 So in what way are you worse off than the other churches, except that I personally did not burden you? Forgive me for this wrong!

Paul’s Concern for the Corinthians

14 Look, I am ready to come to you this third time.(AG) I will not burden you, since I am not seeking what is yours, but you. For children ought not save up for their parents, but parents for their children. 15 I will most gladly spend and be spent for you.[d](AH) If I love you more, am I to be loved less? 16 Now granted, I did not burden(AI) you; yet sly as I am, I took you in by deceit!(AJ) 17 Did I take advantage of you by any of those I sent you? 18 I urged Titus(AK) to go, and I sent the brother with him. Titus didn’t take advantage of you, did he? Didn’t we walk in the same spirit(AL) and in the same footsteps?

19 Have you been thinking all along that we were defending ourselves to you? No, in the sight of God we are speaking in Christ, and everything, dear friends, is for building you up.(AM) 20 For I fear that perhaps when I come I will not find you to be what I want, and you may not find me to be what you want. Perhaps there will be quarreling,(AN) jealousy,(AO) angry outbursts, selfish ambitions,(AP) slander,(AQ) gossip, arrogance, and disorder.(AR) 21 I fear that when I come my God will again[e] humiliate me in your presence, and I will grieve for many who sinned before and have not repented(AS) of the moral impurity, sexual immorality,(AT) and sensuality(AU) they practiced.

Final Warnings and Exhortations

13 This is the third time I am coming to you.(AV) Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.[f](AW) I gave a warning when I was present the second time, and now I give a warning(AX) while I am absent to those who sinned before and to all the rest: If I come again, I will not be lenient, since you seek proof of Christ speaking in me.(AY) He is not weak in dealing with you, but powerful among you. For he was crucified(AZ) in weakness, but he lives(BA) by the power of God. For we also are weak in him,(BB) but in dealing with you we will live(BC) with him by God’s power.

Test(BD) yourselves to see if you are in the faith. Examine yourselves. Or do you yourselves not recognize that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless you fail the test.[g] And I hope you will recognize that we ourselves do not fail the test. But we pray to God that you do nothing wrong—not that we may appear to pass the test, but that you may do what is right,(BE) even though we may appear to fail. For we can’t do anything against the truth,(BF) but only for the truth. We rejoice when we are weak and you are strong.(BG) We also pray that you become fully mature.[h] 10 This is why I am writing these things while absent, so that when I am there I may not have to deal harshly with you, in keeping with the authority the Lord gave me for building up(BH) and not for tearing down.(BI)

11 Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice.[i] Become mature, be encouraged,[j] be of the same mind,(BJ) be at peace,(BK) and the God of love(BL) and peace will be with you. 12 Greet one another with a holy kiss.(BM) All the saints send you greetings.

13 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love(BN) of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.[k](BO)

Paul Boasts About His Sufferings

16 I repeat: Let no one take me for a fool.(A) But if you do, then tolerate me just as you would a fool, so that I may do a little boasting. 17 In this self-confident boasting I am not talking as the Lord would,(B) but as a fool.(C) 18 Since many are boasting in the way the world does,(D) I too will boast.(E) 19 You gladly put up with(F) fools since you are so wise!(G) 20 In fact, you even put up with(H) anyone who enslaves you(I) or exploits you or takes advantage of you or puts on airs or slaps you in the face. 21 To my shame I admit that we were too weak(J) for that!

Whatever anyone else dares to boast about—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast about.(K) 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I.(L) Are they Israelites? So am I.(M) Are they Abraham’s descendants? So am I.(N) 23 Are they servants of Christ?(O) (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder,(P) been in prison more frequently,(Q) been flogged more severely,(R) and been exposed to death again and again.(S) 24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes(T) minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods,(U) once I was pelted with stones,(V) three times I was shipwrecked,(W) I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews,(X) in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city,(Y) in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers.(Z) 27 I have labored and toiled(AA) and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food;(AB) I have been cold and naked. 28 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.(AC) 29 Who is weak, and I do not feel weak?(AD) Who is led into sin,(AE) and I do not inwardly burn?

30 If I must boast, I will boast(AF) of the things that show my weakness.(AG) 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is to be praised forever,(AH) knows(AI) that I am not lying. 32 In Damascus the governor under King Aretas had the city of the Damascenes guarded in order to arrest me.(AJ) 33 But I was lowered in a basket from a window in the wall and slipped through his hands.(AK)

Paul’s Vision and His Thorn

12 I must go on boasting.(AL) Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations(AM) from the Lord. I know a man in Christ(AN) who fourteen years ago was caught up(AO) to the third heaven.(AP) Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows.(AQ) And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows— was caught up(AR) to paradise(AS) and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell. I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses.(AT) Even if I should choose to boast,(AU) I would not be a fool,(AV) because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say, or because of these surpassingly great revelations.(AW) Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh,(AX) a messenger of Satan,(AY) to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.(AZ) But he said to me, “My grace(BA) is sufficient for you, for my power(BB) is made perfect in weakness.(BC)(BD) Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight(BE) in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships,(BF) in persecutions,(BG) in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.(BH)

Paul’s Concern for the Corinthians

11 I have made a fool of myself,(BI) but you drove me to it. I ought to have been commended by you, for I am not in the least inferior to the “super-apostles,”[a](BJ) even though I am nothing.(BK) 12 I persevered in demonstrating among you the marks of a true apostle, including signs, wonders and miracles.(BL) 13 How were you inferior to the other churches, except that I was never a burden to you?(BM) Forgive me this wrong!(BN)

14 Now I am ready to visit you for the third time,(BO) and I will not be a burden to you, because what I want is not your possessions but you. After all, children should not have to save up for their parents,(BP) but parents for their children.(BQ) 15 So I will very gladly spend for you everything I have and expend myself as well.(BR) If I love you more,(BS) will you love me less? 16 Be that as it may, I have not been a burden to you.(BT) Yet, crafty fellow that I am, I caught you by trickery! 17 Did I exploit you through any of the men I sent to you? 18 I urged(BU) Titus(BV) to go to you and I sent our brother(BW) with him. Titus did not exploit you, did he? Did we not walk in the same footsteps by the same Spirit?

19 Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? We have been speaking in the sight of God(BX) as those in Christ; and everything we do, dear friends,(BY) is for your strengthening.(BZ) 20 For I am afraid that when I come(CA) I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be.(CB) I fear that there may be discord,(CC) jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition,(CD) slander,(CE) gossip,(CF) arrogance(CG) and disorder.(CH) 21 I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved(CI) over many who have sinned earlier(CJ) and have not repented of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery(CK) in which they have indulged.

Final Warnings

13 This will be my third visit to you.(CL) “Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.”[b](CM) I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent:(CN) On my return I will not spare(CO) those who sinned earlier(CP) or any of the others, since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me.(CQ) He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you. For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness,(CR) yet he lives by God’s power.(CS) Likewise, we are weak(CT) in him, yet by God’s power we will live with him(CU) in our dealing with you.

Examine yourselves(CV) to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.(CW) Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you(CX)—unless, of course, you fail the test? And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. We are glad whenever we are weak(CY) but you are strong;(CZ) and our prayer is that you may be fully restored.(DA) 10 This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh(DB) in my use of authority—the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.(DC)

Final Greetings

11 Finally, brothers and sisters,(DD) rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace.(DE) And the God of love(DF) and peace(DG) will be with you.

12 Greet one another with a holy kiss.(DH) 13 All God’s people here send their greetings.(DI)

14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,(DJ) and the love of God,(DK) and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit(DL) be with you all.
