14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as (A)an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as (B)servants of righteousness. (C)Their end will correspond to their deeds.

Paul's Sufferings as an Apostle

16 I repeat, (D)let no one think me foolish. But even if you do, accept me as a fool, so that I too may boast a little. 17 What I am saying (E)with this boastful confidence, (F)I say not as the Lord would[a] but as a fool. 18 Since (G)many boast according to the flesh, I too will boast. 19 For you gladly bear with fools, (H)being wise yourselves! 20 For you bear it if someone (I)makes slaves of you, or (J)devours you, or takes advantage of you, or puts on airs, or (K)strikes you in the face. 21 To my shame, I must say, (L)we were too weak for that!

But whatever anyone else dares to boast of—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast of that. 22 Are they Hebrews? (M)So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they offspring of Abraham? So am I. 23 Are they (N)servants of Christ? (O)I am a better one—I am talking like a madman—with far greater labors, (P)far more imprisonments, (Q)with countless beatings, and (R)often near death. 24 Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the (S)forty lashes less one. 25 Three times I was (T)beaten with rods. (U)Once I was stoned. Three times I (V)was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; 26 on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, (W)danger from my own people, (X)danger from Gentiles, (Y)danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; 27 (Z)in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, (AA)in hunger and thirst, often without food,[b] in cold and exposure. 28 And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for (AB)all the churches. 29 (AC)Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to fall, and I am not indignant?

30 (AD)If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. 31 (AE)The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, (AF)he who is blessed forever, (AG)knows that I am not lying. 32 At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas (AH)was guarding the city of Damascus in order to seize me, 33 (AI)but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall and escaped his hands.

Paul's Visions and His Thorn

12 I must go on boasting. Though there is nothing to be gained by it, I will go on to visions and (AJ)revelations of the Lord. I know a man (AK)in Christ who fourteen years ago was (AL)caught up to (AM)the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, (AN)God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into (AO)paradise—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, (AP)God knows— and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, (AQ)except of my weaknesses— though if I should wish to boast, (AR)I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth; but I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. So (AS)to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations,[c] (AT)a thorn was given me in the flesh, (AU)a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. (AV)Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, (AW)“My grace is sufficient for you, for (AX)my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that (AY)the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 (AZ)For the sake of Christ, then, (BA)I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For (BB)when I am weak, then I am strong.

Concern for the Corinthian Church

11 (BC)I have been a fool! You forced me to it, for I ought to have been commended by you. For I was (BD)not at all inferior to these super-apostles, (BE)even though I am nothing. 12 (BF)The signs of a true apostle were performed among you (BG)with utmost patience, with signs and wonders and mighty works. 13 For in what were you less favored than the rest of the churches, except that (BH)I myself did not burden you? Forgive me this wrong!

14 Here (BI)for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be a burden, for (BJ)I seek not what is yours but you. For (BK)children are not obligated to save up for their parents, but (BL)parents for their children. 15 (BM)I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If (BN)I love you more, am I to be loved less? 16 But granting that (BO)I myself did not burden you, I was crafty, you say, and got the better of you by deceit. 17 Did I take advantage of you (BP)through any of those whom I sent to you? 18 (BQ)I urged Titus to go, and sent (BR)the brother with him. Did Titus take advantage of you? Did we not act in the same spirit? Did we not take the same steps?

19 Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? It is (BS)in the sight of God that we have been speaking in Christ, and (BT)all for your upbuilding, beloved. 20 For I fear that perhaps (BU)when I come I may find you not as I wish, and that you may find me not as you wish—that perhaps there may be quarreling, jealousy, anger, hostility, slander, gossip, conceit, and disorder. 21 I fear that when I come again my God may humble me before you, and I may have to mourn over many of those (BV)who sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, (BW)sexual immorality, and sensuality that they have practiced.

Final Warnings

13 (BX)This is the third time I am coming to you. Every charge must be established (BY)by the evidence of two or three witnesses. (BZ)I warned (CA)those who sinned before and all the others, and I warn them now while absent, as I did when present on my second visit, that (CB)if I come again I will not spare them— since you seek proof that Christ (CC)is speaking in me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but (CD)is powerful among you. For (CE)he was crucified in weakness, but (CF)lives by the power of God. For (CG)we also are weak in him, but in dealing with you (CH)we will live with him by the power of God.

Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. (CI)Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that (CJ)Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!

14 And no wonder, for Satan(A) himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.(B)

Paul Boasts About His Sufferings

16 I repeat: Let no one take me for a fool.(C) But if you do, then tolerate me just as you would a fool, so that I may do a little boasting. 17 In this self-confident boasting I am not talking as the Lord would,(D) but as a fool.(E) 18 Since many are boasting in the way the world does,(F) I too will boast.(G) 19 You gladly put up with(H) fools since you are so wise!(I) 20 In fact, you even put up with(J) anyone who enslaves you(K) or exploits you or takes advantage of you or puts on airs or slaps you in the face. 21 To my shame I admit that we were too weak(L) for that!

Whatever anyone else dares to boast about—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast about.(M) 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I.(N) Are they Israelites? So am I.(O) Are they Abraham’s descendants? So am I.(P) 23 Are they servants of Christ?(Q) (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder,(R) been in prison more frequently,(S) been flogged more severely,(T) and been exposed to death again and again.(U) 24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes(V) minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods,(W) once I was pelted with stones,(X) three times I was shipwrecked,(Y) I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews,(Z) in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city,(AA) in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers.(AB) 27 I have labored and toiled(AC) and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food;(AD) I have been cold and naked. 28 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.(AE) 29 Who is weak, and I do not feel weak?(AF) Who is led into sin,(AG) and I do not inwardly burn?

30 If I must boast, I will boast(AH) of the things that show my weakness.(AI) 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is to be praised forever,(AJ) knows(AK) that I am not lying. 32 In Damascus the governor under King Aretas had the city of the Damascenes guarded in order to arrest me.(AL) 33 But I was lowered in a basket from a window in the wall and slipped through his hands.(AM)

Paul’s Vision and His Thorn

12 I must go on boasting.(AN) Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations(AO) from the Lord. I know a man in Christ(AP) who fourteen years ago was caught up(AQ) to the third heaven.(AR) Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows.(AS) And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows— was caught up(AT) to paradise(AU) and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell. I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses.(AV) Even if I should choose to boast,(AW) I would not be a fool,(AX) because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say, or because of these surpassingly great revelations.(AY) Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh,(AZ) a messenger of Satan,(BA) to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.(BB) But he said to me, “My grace(BC) is sufficient for you, for my power(BD) is made perfect in weakness.(BE)(BF) Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight(BG) in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships,(BH) in persecutions,(BI) in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.(BJ)

Paul’s Concern for the Corinthians

11 I have made a fool of myself,(BK) but you drove me to it. I ought to have been commended by you, for I am not in the least inferior to the “super-apostles,”[a](BL) even though I am nothing.(BM) 12 I persevered in demonstrating among you the marks of a true apostle, including signs, wonders and miracles.(BN) 13 How were you inferior to the other churches, except that I was never a burden to you?(BO) Forgive me this wrong!(BP)

14 Now I am ready to visit you for the third time,(BQ) and I will not be a burden to you, because what I want is not your possessions but you. After all, children should not have to save up for their parents,(BR) but parents for their children.(BS) 15 So I will very gladly spend for you everything I have and expend myself as well.(BT) If I love you more,(BU) will you love me less? 16 Be that as it may, I have not been a burden to you.(BV) Yet, crafty fellow that I am, I caught you by trickery! 17 Did I exploit you through any of the men I sent to you? 18 I urged(BW) Titus(BX) to go to you and I sent our brother(BY) with him. Titus did not exploit you, did he? Did we not walk in the same footsteps by the same Spirit?

19 Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? We have been speaking in the sight of God(BZ) as those in Christ; and everything we do, dear friends,(CA) is for your strengthening.(CB) 20 For I am afraid that when I come(CC) I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be.(CD) I fear that there may be discord,(CE) jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition,(CF) slander,(CG) gossip,(CH) arrogance(CI) and disorder.(CJ) 21 I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved(CK) over many who have sinned earlier(CL) and have not repented of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery(CM) in which they have indulged.

Final Warnings

13 This will be my third visit to you.(CN) “Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.”[b](CO) I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent:(CP) On my return I will not spare(CQ) those who sinned earlier(CR) or any of the others, since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me.(CS) He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you. For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness,(CT) yet he lives by God’s power.(CU) Likewise, we are weak(CV) in him, yet by God’s power we will live with him(CW) in our dealing with you.

Examine yourselves(CX) to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.(CY) Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you(CZ)—unless, of course, you fail the test?
