15 Nell'anno diciottesimo del regno di Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat, Abijam iniziò a regnare su Giuda.
2 Egli regnò tre anni a Gerusalemme. Sua madre si chiamava Maakah, figlia di Abishalom.
3 Egli si abbandonò a tutti i peccati che suo padre aveva commesso prima di lui, e il suo cuore non fu interamente consacrato all'Eterno, il suo DIO, come il cuore di Davide suo padre.
4 Tuttavia per amore di Davide, l'Eterno, il suo DIO, gli lasciò una lampada in Gerusalemme, innalzando suo figlio dopo di lui e rendendo stabile Gerusalemme,
5 perché Davide aveva fatto ciò che è giusto agli occhi dell'Eterno e non si era allontanato in nulla da ciò che il Signore gli aveva comandato per tutto il tempo della sua vita, eccetto nel caso di Uriah lo Hitteo.
6 Fra Roboamo e Geroboamo vi fu guerra finché Roboamo visse.

8 Poi Abijam si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto nella città di Davide. Al suo posto regnò suo figlio Asa.
9 Nell'anno ventesimo del regno di Geroboamo, re d'Israele, Asa iniziò a regnare su Giuda.
10 Egli regnò quarantun anni a Gerusalemme. Sua madre si chiamava Maakah, figlia di Abishalom.
11 Asa fece ciò che è giusto agli occhi dell'Eterno, come Davide suo padre.
12 Eliminò dal paese quelli che si davano alla prostituzione sacra e fece sparire tutti gl'idoli che i suoi padri avevano fatto.
13 Destituí pure dalla dignità di regina sua madre Maakah, perch'essa aveva fatto fare un idolo orribile di Ascerah; Asa abbattè quell'orribile idolo e lo bruciò presso il torrente Kidron.
14 Gli alti luoghi però non furono eliminati; tuttavia il cuore di Asa rimase interamente consacrato all'Eterno per tutta la sua vita.
15 Egli fece portare nella casa dell'Eterno le cose che suo padre aveva consacrato e le cose che lui stesso aveva consacrato: argento, oro e vasi.
16 Ci fu guerra fra Asa e Baasha, re d'Israele, tutto il tempo della loro vita
17 Baasha, re d'Israele, salí contro Giuda e costruí Ramah, per impedire che alcuno andasse o venisse da Asa, re di Giuda.
18 Allora Asa prese tutto l'argento e l'oro ch'era rimasto nei tesori della casa dell'Eterno e i tesori del palazzo reale e li consegnò ai suoi servi; il re Asa li mando poi da Ben-Hadad, figlio di Tabrimmon, figlio di Hezion, re di Siria, che abitava a Damasco, per dirgli
19 «Ci sia un'alleanza fra me e te come vi fu fra mio padre e tuo padre. Ecco, io ti mando un dono di argento e d'oro; va' a rompere la tua alleanza con Baasha, re d'Israele; affinché egli si ritiri da me».
20 Ben-Hadad diede ascolto al re Asa e mandò i capi del suo esercito contro le città d'Israele, ed espugnò Ijon, Dan, Abel-Beth-Maakah e tutta la regione di Kinneroth con tutto il paese di Neftali.
21 Appena Baasha lo venne a sapere, smise di costruire Ramah e rimase a Tirtsah.
22 Allora il re Asa convocò tutti quelli di Giuda, nessuno escluso; essi portarono via da Ramah le pietre e il legname che Baasha aveva usato per costruire, e con essi il re Asa edificò Gheba di Beniamino e Mitspah.
23 Il resto di tutte le gesta di Asa, tutte le sue prodezze, tutto ciò che egli fece e le città che costruí non sono forse scritti nel libro delle Cronache dei re di Giuda? Ma nella sua vecchiaia egli soffrí di male ai piedi.
24 Quindi si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto con i suoi padri nella città di Davide suo padre. Al suo posto regnò suo figlio Giosafat.
25 Nadab, figlio di Geroboamo, iniziò a regnare su Israele il secondo anno di Asa, re di Giuda, e regnò su Israele due anni.
26 Egli fece ciò che è male agli occhi dell'Eterno e seguí le vie di suo padre e il peccato nel quale aveva fatto cadere Israele.
27 Poi Baasha, figlio di Ahijah della casa d'Issacar, congiurò contro di lui e lo uccise a Ghibbethon che apparteneva ai Filistei, mentre Nadab e tutto Israele assediavano Ghibbethon.
28 Baasha lo uccise l'anno terzo di Asa, re di Giuda, e regnò al suo posto.
29 Appena divenuto re, egli sterminò tutta la casa di Geroboamo; non lasciò a Geroboamo anima viva, ma la distrusse interamente, secondo la parola che l'Eterno aveva pronunziato per mezzo del suo servo Ahijah lo Scilonita,
30 a motivo dei peccati di Geroboamo, commessi da lui e fatti commettere a Israele, provocando ad ira l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele.

32 Ci fu guerra fra Asa e Baasha, re d'Israele, tutto il tempo della loro vita.
33 L'anno terzo di Asa, re di Giuda, Baasha, figlio di Ahijah, iniziò a regnare su tutto Israele a Tirtsah; e regnò ventiquattro anni.
34 Egli fece ciò che è male agli occhi dell'Eterno e seguí le vie di Geroboamo e il suo peccato che questi aveva fatto commettere a Israele.
16 Poi la parola dell'Eterno fu rivolta a Jehu, figlio di Hanani, contro Baasha, dicendo:
2 Io ti ho innalzato dalla polvere e ti ho fatto principe del mio popolo Israele, tu hai seguito le vie di Geroboamo e fatto peccare il mio popolo Israele, provocandomi ad ira con i suoi peccati;
3 perciò io spazzerò via Baasha e la sua casa e farò della tua casa ciò che ho fatto alla casa di Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat.
4 Quelli di Baasha che moriranno in città saranno divorati dai cani; e quelli che moriranno per i campi saranno divorati dagli uccelli del cielo».

6 Quindi Baasha si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto in Tirtsah. Al suo posto regnò suo figlio Elah.
7 Inoltre la parola dell'Eterno fu indirizzata per mezzo del profeta Jehu, figlio di Hanani, contro Baasha e contro la sua casa per tutto il male che Baasha aveva fatto agli occhi dell'Eterno, provocandolo ad ira con l'opera delle sue mani, divenendo come la casa di Geroboamo, e anche perché egli l'aveva distrutta.
8 Nell'anno ventiseiesimo di Asa, re di Giuda, Elah, figlio di Baasha, cominciò a regnare su Israele a Tirtsah, e regnò due anni.
9 Zimri, suo servo, comandante della metà dei suoi carri, congiurò contro di lui. Mentre egli si trovava a Tirtsah, intento a bere e ad ubriacarsi in casa di Artsa, prefetto del palazzo di Tirtsah,
10 Zimri entrò, lo colpí e l'uccise, l'anno ventisettesimo di Asa, re di Giuda, e regnò al suo posto.
11 Quando iniziò a regnare, non appena si sedette sul trono, distrusse tutta la casa di Baasha; non lasciò in vita neppure un maschio tra i suoi parenti prossimi e amici.
12 Cosí Zimri sterminò tutta la casa di Baasha, secondo la parola dell'Eterno indirizzata contro Baasha per mezzo del profeta Jehu,
13 a motivo di tutti i peccati di Baasha e dei peccati di Elah suo figlio, che essi avevano commesso e che avevano fatto commettere a Israele, provocando ad ira l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele, con i loro idoli.

15 Nell'anno ventisettesimo di Asa re di Giuda, Zimri regnò per sette giorni; in Tirtsah. Il popolo era accampato contro Ghibbethon, che apparteneva ai Filistei
16 Cosí il popolo accampato sentí dire: «Zimri ha fatto una congiura e ha pure ucciso il re!». Quello stesso giorno nell'accampamento tutto Israele fece re d'Israele Omri, capo dell'esercito.
17 Poi Omri con tutto Israele salí da Ghibbethon e assediò Tirtsah.
18 Quando Zimri vide che la città era presa, si ritirò nella fortezza del palazzo reale, diede fuoco al palazzo reale sopra di lui e cosí morí,
19 a motivo dei peccati che aveva commesso, facendo ciò che è male agli occhi dell'Eterno, seguendo la via di Geroboamo e compiendo il peccato che questi aveva commesso, inducendo Israele a peccare.
20 Il resto delle gesta di Zimri e la congiura da lui ordita non sono forse scritte nel libro delle Cronache dei re d'Israele?
21 Allora il popolo d'Israele si divise in due parti; metà del popolo seguiva Tibni, figlio di Ghinath, per farlo re; l'altra metà seguiva Omri.
22 Ma il popolo che seguiva Omri prevalse sul popolo che seguiva Tibni, figlio di Ghinath. Tibni morí e regnò Omri.
23 Nell'anno trentunesimo di Asa, re di Giuda, Omri iniziò a regnare su Israele e regnò dodici anni. Per sei anni regnò in Tirtsah,
24 poi comprò da Scemer il monte di Samaria per due talenti d'argento; costruí sul monte una città e chiamò la città che vi costruí Samaria dal nome di Scemer, padrone del monte.
25 Omri fece ciò che è male agli occhi dell'Eterno e si comportò peggio di tutti i suoi predecessori;
26 seguí in tutto la via di Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat, e i peccati che Geroboamo aveva fatto commettere a Israele, provocando ad ira l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele, con i suoi idoli.
27 Il resto delle gesta compiute da Omri e le prodezze da lui fatte non sono forse scritte nel libro delle Cronache dei re d'Israele?
28 Poi Omri si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto in Samaria. Al suo posto regnò suo figlio Achab.
29 Achab, figlio di Omri, iniziò a regnare su Israele l'anno trentottesimo di Asa, re di Giuda; e Achab, figlio di Omri, regnò in Samaria su Israele per ventidue anni.
30 Achab, figlio di Omri, fece ciò che è male agli occhi dell'Eterno piú di tutti quelli che lo avevano preceduto.
31 Inoltre, come se fosse stata per lui un'inezia il seguire i peccati di Geroboamo figlio di Nebat, prese in moglie Jezebel, figlia di Ethbaal, re dei Sidoni, e andò a servire Baal e a prostrarsi davanti a lui.
32 Eresse poi un'altare a Baal nel tempio di Baal, che aveva costruito in Samaria.
33 Achab fece anche un'Ascerah. Achab provocò ad ira l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele, piú di tutti i re d'Israele che l'avevano preceduto.
34 Nei suoi giorni, Hiel di Bethel ricostruí Gerico; ne gettò le fondamenta su Abiram, suo primogenito, e ne rizzò le porte su Segub, il piú giovane dei suoi figli, secondo la parola che l'Eterno aveva pronunciato per mezzo di Giosuè, figlio di Nun.
17 Elia, il Tishbita, uno degli abitanti di Galaad disse ad Achab: «Com'è vero che vive l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele, alla cui presenza io sto, non ci sarà né rugiada né pioggia in questi anni, se non alla mia parola».
2 Poi la parola dell'Eterno gli fu indirizzata, dicendo:
3 Vattene da qui, volgiti verso oriente e nasconditi presso il torrente Kerith, che si trova a est del Giordano.
4 Tu berrai al torrente e io ho comandato ai corvi che ti diano da mangiare là».
5 Così egli partí e fece secondo la parola dell'Eterno: andò e si stabilí presso il torrente Kerith, che si trova a est del Giordano.
6 I corvi gli portavano pane e carne al mattino e pane e carne alla sera, e beveva al torrente.
7 Dopo un po' di tempo il torrente si secco, perchè non veniva pioggia sul paese.
8 Allora la parola dell'Eterno gli fu indirizzata dicendo:
9 «Lèvati e va' a stabilirti a Sarepta dei Sidoni, perché là ho ordinato a una vedova di provvederti da mangiare».
10 Egli dunque si levò e andò a Sarepta; come giunse alla porta della città, ecco lí una vedova che raccoglieva legna. Egli la chiamò e le disse: «Va' a prendermi un po' di acqua in un vaso perché possa bere».
11 Mentre essa andava a prenderla la chiamò e disse: «Portami anche un pezzo di pane».
12 Ella rispose: «Com'è vero che vive l'Eterno, il tuo DIO pane non ne ho, ma solo una manciata di farina in un vaso e un po' di olio in un orcio; ed ora sto raccogliendo due pezzi di legna, per andare a prepararla per me e per mio figlio; la mangeremo e poi moriremo».
13 Elia le disse: «Non temere; va' e fa' come hai detto, ma fanne prima una piccola focaccia per me e portamela; quindi ne farai per te e per tuo figlio.
14 Poiché cosí dice l'Eterno, il DIO d'Israele: il vaso della farina non si esaurirà e l'orcio dell'olio non diminuirà, fino al giorno che l'Eterno manderà la pioggia sulla terra"».
15 Cosí ella andò e fece secondo la parola di Elia; e mangiarono lei, Elia e la sua famiglia per parecchio tempo.
16 Il vaso della farina non si esaurí e l'orcio dell'olio non calò, secondo la parola che l'Eterno aveva pronunciato per mezzo di Elia.
17 In seguito a queste cose, il figlio della donna che era la padrona di casa si ammalò; la sua malattia fu cosí grave, che non gli rimase piú soffio di vita.
18 Ella allora disse ad Elia: «Che ho io da far con te o uomo di DIO? Sei forse venuto da me per farmi ricordare il mio peccato e per uccidermi il figlio?».
19 Egli le rispose: «Dammi tuo figlio». Cosí lo prese dal suo seno, lo portò nella stanza di sopra e lo coricò sul suo letto.
20 Poi invocò l'Eterno e disse «O Eterno, DIO mio, hai forse colpito di sventura anche questa vedova, che mi ospita, facendole morire il figlio?».
21 Si distese quindi tre volte sul fanciullo e invocò l'Eterno, dicendo: «O Eterno DIO mio, ti prego, fa' che l'anima di questo fanciullo ritorni in lui».
22 L'Eterno esaudí la voce di Elia: l'anima del fanciullo ritornò in lui ed egli riprese vita.
23 Allora Elia prese il fanciullo, Io porto giú dalla stanza di sopra in casa e lo diede a sua madre dicendole: «Guarda, tuo figlio è vivo!».
24 Allora la donna disse ad Elia: «Ora riconosco che tu, sei un uomo di DIO e che la parola dell'Eterno sulla tua bocca è verità».

Abijah King of Judah(A)
15 In the eighteenth year of the reign of Jeroboam son of Nebat, Abijah[a] became king of Judah, 2 and he reigned in Jerusalem three years. His mother’s name was Maakah(B) daughter of Abishalom.[b]
3 He committed all the sins his father had done before him; his heart was not fully devoted(C) to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his forefather had been. 4 Nevertheless, for David’s sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp(D) in Jerusalem by raising up a son to succeed him and by making Jerusalem strong. 5 For David had done what was right in the eyes of the Lord and had not failed to keep(E) any of the Lord’s commands all the days of his life—except in the case of Uriah(F) the Hittite.
6 There was war(G) between Abijah[c] and Jeroboam throughout Abijah’s lifetime. 7 As for the other events of Abijah’s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? There was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. 8 And Abijah rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. And Asa his son succeeded him as king.
Asa King of Judah(H)(I)
9 In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah, 10 and he reigned in Jerusalem forty-one years. His grandmother’s name was Maakah(J) daughter of Abishalom.
11 Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as his father David(K) had done. 12 He expelled the male shrine prostitutes(L) from the land and got rid of all the idols(M) his ancestors had made. 13 He even deposed his grandmother Maakah(N) from her position as queen mother,(O) because she had made a repulsive image for the worship of Asherah. Asa cut it down(P) and burned it in the Kidron Valley. 14 Although he did not remove(Q) the high places, Asa’s heart was fully committed(R) to the Lord all his life. 15 He brought into the temple of the Lord the silver and gold and the articles that he and his father had dedicated.(S)
16 There was war(T) between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their reigns. 17 Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified Ramah(U) to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah.
18 Asa then took all the silver and gold that was left in the treasuries of the Lord’s temple(V) and of his own palace. He entrusted it to his officials and sent(W) them to Ben-Hadad(X) son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion, the king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus. 19 “Let there be a treaty(Y) between me and you,” he said, “as there was between my father and your father. See, I am sending you a gift of silver and gold. Now break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so he will withdraw from me.”
20 Ben-Hadad agreed with King Asa and sent the commanders of his forces against the towns of Israel. He conquered(Z) Ijon, Dan, Abel Beth Maakah and all Kinnereth in addition to Naphtali. 21 When Baasha heard this, he stopped building Ramah(AA) and withdrew to Tirzah.(AB) 22 Then King Asa issued an order to all Judah—no one was exempt—and they carried away from Ramah(AC) the stones and timber Baasha had been using there. With them King Asa(AD) built up Geba(AE) in Benjamin, and also Mizpah.(AF)
23 As for all the other events of Asa’s reign, all his achievements, all he did and the cities he built, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? In his old age, however, his feet became diseased. 24 Then Asa rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the city of his father David. And Jehoshaphat(AG) his son succeeded him as king.
Nadab King of Israel
25 Nadab son of Jeroboam became king of Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel two years. 26 He did evil(AH) in the eyes of the Lord, following the ways of his father(AI) and committing the same sin his father had caused Israel to commit.
27 Baasha son of Ahijah from the tribe of Issachar plotted against him, and he struck him down(AJ) at Gibbethon,(AK) a Philistine town, while Nadab and all Israel were besieging it. 28 Baasha killed Nadab in the third year of Asa king of Judah and succeeded him as king.
29 As soon as he began to reign, he killed Jeroboam’s whole family.(AL) He did not leave Jeroboam anyone that breathed, but destroyed them all, according to the word of the Lord given through his servant Ahijah the Shilonite. 30 This happened because of the sins(AM) Jeroboam had committed and had caused(AN) Israel to commit, and because he aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel.
31 As for the other events of Nadab’s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals(AO) of the kings of Israel? 32 There was war(AP) between Asa and Baasha king of Israel throughout their reigns.
Baasha King of Israel
33 In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha son of Ahijah became king of all Israel in Tirzah,(AQ) and he reigned twenty-four years. 34 He did evil(AR) in the eyes of the Lord, following the ways of Jeroboam and committing the same sin Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit.
16 Then the word of the Lord came to Jehu(AS) son of Hanani(AT) concerning Baasha: 2 “I lifted you up from the dust(AU) and appointed you ruler(AV) over my people Israel, but you followed the ways of Jeroboam and caused(AW) my people Israel to sin and to arouse my anger by their sins. 3 So I am about to wipe out Baasha(AX) and his house,(AY) and I will make your house like that of Jeroboam son of Nebat. 4 Dogs(AZ) will eat those belonging to Baasha who die in the city, and birds(BA) will feed on those who die in the country.”
5 As for the other events of Baasha’s reign, what he did and his achievements, are they not written in the book of the annals(BB) of the kings of Israel? 6 Baasha rested with his ancestors and was buried in Tirzah.(BC) And Elah his son succeeded him as king.
7 Moreover, the word of the Lord came(BD) through the prophet Jehu(BE) son of Hanani to Baasha and his house, because of all the evil he had done in the eyes of the Lord, arousing his anger by the things he did, becoming like the house of Jeroboam—and also because he destroyed it.
Elah King of Israel
8 In the twenty-sixth year of Asa king of Judah, Elah son of Baasha became king of Israel, and he reigned in Tirzah two years.
9 Zimri, one of his officials, who had command of half his chariots, plotted against him. Elah was in Tirzah at the time, getting drunk(BF) in the home of Arza, the palace administrator(BG) at Tirzah. 10 Zimri came in, struck him down and killed him in the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah. Then he succeeded him as king.(BH)
11 As soon as he began to reign and was seated on the throne, he killed off Baasha’s whole family.(BI) He did not spare a single male, whether relative or friend. 12 So Zimri destroyed the whole family of Baasha, in accordance with the word of the Lord spoken against Baasha through the prophet Jehu— 13 because of all the sins Baasha and his son Elah had committed and had caused Israel to commit, so that they aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, by their worthless idols.(BJ)
14 As for the other events of Elah’s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel?
Zimri King of Israel
15 In the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah, Zimri reigned in Tirzah seven days. The army was encamped near Gibbethon,(BK) a Philistine town. 16 When the Israelites in the camp heard that Zimri had plotted against the king and murdered him, they proclaimed Omri, the commander of the army, king over Israel that very day there in the camp. 17 Then Omri and all the Israelites with him withdrew from Gibbethon and laid siege to Tirzah. 18 When Zimri saw that the city was taken, he went into the citadel of the royal palace and set the palace on fire around him. So he died, 19 because of the sins he had committed, doing evil in the eyes of the Lord and following the ways of Jeroboam and committing the same sin Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit.
20 As for the other events of Zimri’s reign, and the rebellion he carried out, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel?
Omri King of Israel
21 Then the people of Israel were split into two factions; half supported Tibni son of Ginath for king, and the other half supported Omri. 22 But Omri’s followers proved stronger than those of Tibni son of Ginath. So Tibni died and Omri became king.
23 In the thirty-first year of Asa king of Judah, Omri became king of Israel, and he reigned twelve years, six of them in Tirzah.(BL) 24 He bought the hill of Samaria from Shemer for two talents[d] of silver and built a city on the hill, calling it Samaria,(BM) after Shemer, the name of the former owner of the hill.
25 But Omri did evil(BN) in the eyes of the Lord and sinned more than all those before him. 26 He followed completely the ways of Jeroboam son of Nebat, committing the same sin Jeroboam had caused(BO) Israel to commit, so that they aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, by their worthless idols.(BP)
27 As for the other events of Omri’s reign, what he did and the things he achieved, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 28 Omri rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria.(BQ) And Ahab his son succeeded him as king.
Ahab Becomes King of Israel
29 In the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, Ahab son of Omri became king of Israel, and he reigned in Samaria over Israel twenty-two years. 30 Ahab son of Omri did more(BR) evil in the eyes of the Lord than any of those before him. 31 He not only considered it trivial to commit the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, but he also married(BS) Jezebel daughter(BT) of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and began to serve Baal(BU) and worship him. 32 He set up an altar(BV) for Baal in the temple(BW) of Baal that he built in Samaria. 33 Ahab also made an Asherah pole(BX) and did more(BY) to arouse the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, than did all the kings of Israel before him.
34 In Ahab’s time, Hiel of Bethel rebuilt Jericho. He laid its foundations at the cost of his firstborn son Abiram, and he set up its gates at the cost of his youngest son Segub, in accordance with the word of the Lord spoken by Joshua son of Nun.(BZ)
Elijah Announces a Great Drought
17 Now Elijah(CA) the Tishbite, from Tishbe[e] in Gilead,(CB) said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain(CC) in the next few years except at my word.”
Elijah Fed by Ravens
2 Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah: 3 “Leave here, turn eastward and hide(CD) in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. 4 You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens(CE) to supply you with food there.”
5 So he did what the Lord had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there. 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning(CF) and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.
Elijah and the Widow at Zarephath
7 Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land. 8 Then the word of the Lord came to him: 9 “Go at once to Zarephath(CG) in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow(CH) there to supply you with food.” 10 So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?”(CI) 11 As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.”
12 “As surely as the Lord your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil(CJ) in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.”
13 Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. 14 For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain(CK) on the land.’”
15 She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. 16 For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.
17 Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing. 18 She said to Elijah, “What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin(CL) and kill my son?”
19 “Give me your son,” Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed. 20 Then he cried(CM) out to the Lord, “Lord my God, have you brought tragedy even on this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?” 21 Then he stretched(CN) himself out on the boy three times and cried out to the Lord, “Lord my God, let this boy’s life return to him!”
22 The Lord heard Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived. 23 Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother(CO) and said, “Look, your son is alive!”
24 Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know(CP) that you are a man of God(CQ) and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth.”(CR)
