  1. 1 Thessalonians 5:3 Destruction: this does not mean annihilation but exclusion from the presence of the Lord (see 2 Thes 1:9), i.e., ruination of one’s life and accomplishments. And it will be a ruin that occurs in an instant. Labor pains: the stress here is not on the pains so much as their suddenness and inevitability. No means of escape: literally, “They will not escape.”

For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
