¹⁹^[a]So Saul sent messengers to Jesse saying, “Send me David, your son, who is tending the sheep.”

1 Samuel 16:19 David is given an opportunity to learn firsthand the ways of leading the people from Saul, who apparently does not know that Samuel has already anointed David as the Lord instructed (v. 13).

¹⁹Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.^(A)”

¹⁹Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.
