The Birth of Samuel
1 There was a certain man from Ramathaim,(A) a Zuphite[a](B) from the hill country(C) of Ephraim,(D) whose name was Elkanah(E) son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives;(F) one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.
3 Year after year(G) this man went up from his town to worship(H) and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty at Shiloh,(I) where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli,(J) were priests of the Lord. 4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice,(K) he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.(L) 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion(M) because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb.(N) 6 Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.(O) 7 This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.(P) 8 Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?(Q)”
9 Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house.(R) 10 In her deep anguish(S) Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. 11 And she made a vow,(T) saying, “Lord Almighty(U), if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember(V) me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life,(W) and no razor(X) will ever be used on his head.”
12 As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.”
15 “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled.(Y) I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring(Z) out my soul to the Lord. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.”(AA)
17 Eli answered, “Go in peace,(AB) and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.(AC)”
18 She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.(AD)” Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.(AE)
19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah.(AF) Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered(AG) her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.(AH) She named(AI) him Samuel,[b](AJ) saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”
Hannah Dedicates Samuel
21 When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual(AK) sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow,(AL) 22 Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, “After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present(AM) him before the Lord, and he will live there always.”[c]
23 “Do what seems best to you,” her husband Elkanah told her. “Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the Lord make good(AN) his[d] word.” So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned(AO) him.
24 After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull,[e](AP) an ephah[f] of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. 25 When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli, 26 and she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed(AQ) for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life(AR) he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.
Hannah’s Prayer
2 Then Hannah prayed and said:(AS)
“My heart rejoices(AT) in the Lord;
in the Lord my horn[g](AU) is lifted high.
My mouth boasts(AV) over my enemies,(AW)
for I delight in your deliverance.
2 “There is no one holy(AX) like(AY) the Lord;
there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock(AZ) like our God.
3 “Do not keep talking so proudly
or let your mouth speak such arrogance,(BA)
for the Lord is a God who knows,(BB)
and by him deeds(BC) are weighed.(BD)
4 “The bows of the warriors are broken,(BE)
but those who stumbled are armed with strength.(BF)
5 Those who were full hire themselves out for food,
but those who were hungry(BG) are hungry no more.
She who was barren(BH) has borne seven children,
but she who has had many sons pines away.
6 “The Lord brings death and makes alive;(BI)
he brings down to the grave and raises up.(BJ)
7 The Lord sends poverty and wealth;(BK)
he humbles and he exalts.(BL)
8 He raises(BM) the poor(BN) from the dust(BO)
and lifts the needy(BP) from the ash heap;
he seats them with princes
and has them inherit a throne of honor.(BQ)
“For the foundations(BR) of the earth are the Lord’s;
on them he has set the world.
9 He will guard the feet(BS) of his faithful servants,(BT)
but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.(BU)

1 A certain man lived in Ramathaim-zophim, which is in the hill country of Ephraim. He was Jeroham’s son Elkanah, the grandson of Elihu and grandson of Tohu, who was the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives; the name of one was Hannah and the name of the other was Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. 3 That man would go up from his town each year to worship and sacrifice to the Lord of the Heavenly Armies at Shiloh, where Eli’s two sons Hophni and Phineas served as priests of the Lord. 4 On the day when Elkanah offered sacrifices, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters, 5 but he would give twice as much to Hannah because he loved her.
Now the Lord had closed her womb. 6 Her rival would provoke her severely so that she complained loudly[a] because the Lord had closed her womb. 7 Elkanah[b] would do this year after year, as often as Hannah[c] went up to the house of the Lord. Likewise, Peninnah[d] would provoke her, and Hannah[e] would cry and would not eat. 8 Elkanah her husband told her, “Hannah, why are you crying and why don’t you eat? Why are you upset?[f] Am I not better to you than ten sons?”
9 Hannah got up after she had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the chair by the doorpost of the tent[g] of the Lord. 10 Deeply distressed, she prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly. 11 Hannah[h] made a vow: “Lord of the Heavenly Armies, if you just look at the misery of your maid servant, remember me, and don’t forget your maid servant. If you give your maid servant a son,[i] then I’ll give him to the Lord[j] for all the days of his life,[k] and a razor is never to touch[l] his head.”
12 As she continued to pray in the Lord’s presence, Eli was watching her mouth. 13 Hannah[m] was praying inwardly.[n] Her lips were quivering, and her voice could not be heard. So Eli thought she was drunk. 14 Eli told her, “How long will you stay drunk? Put away your wine!”
15 “No, sir!”[o] Hannah replied. “I’m a deeply troubled[p] woman. I’ve drunk neither wine nor beer. I’ve been pouring out my soul in the Lord’s presence. 16 Don’t consider your maid servant a worthless woman. Rather, all this time I’ve been speaking because I’m very anxious and distressed.”
17 “Go in peace,” Eli answered. “May the God of Israel grant the request you have asked of him.”
18 She said, “Let your servant[q] find favor in your eyes.” Then she[r] went on her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.[s]
19 They got up early the next morning and worshipped in the Lord’s presence, and then they returned and came to their house at Ramah. Elkanah had marital relations with[t] his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. 20 By the time of the next year’s sacrifice,[u] Hannah had become pregnant and had borne a son. She named him Samuel[v] because she said,[w] “I asked the Lord for him.”
Hannah Dedicates Samuel to the Lord
21 Then Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the yearly sacrifice to the Lord and pay his vow. 22 Hannah did not go up because she had told her husband, “As soon as the child is weaned, I’ll take him to appear in the Lord’s presence and remain there[x] forever.”[y]
23 “Do what you want,”[z] Elkanah told her. “Stay until you have weaned him, only may the Lord bring about what you’ve said.”[aa] So Hannah[ab] stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him. 24 Then, when she had weaned him, she brought him[ac] up with her to Shiloh,[ad] along with a three-year-old bull,[ae] an ephah[af] of flour, and a skin of wine. She brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh, and the boy[ag] was young.[ah] 25 They slaughtered the bull and brought the boy[ai] to Eli.
26 Hannah[aj] said, “Sir,[ak] as surely as you are alive, I’m the woman who stood before you here praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed for this boy, and the Lord granted me the request I asked of him. 28 Now[al] I’m dedicating[am] him to the Lord, and as long as he lives,[an] he will be dedicated[ao] to the Lord.” Then they worshipped[ap] the Lord there.
Hannah’s Thanksgiving Psalm
2 Then Hannah prayed:
“My heart exults in the Lord;
my strength[aq] is increased by the Lord.
I will open my mouth to speak[ar] against my enemies,
because I rejoice in your deliverance.
2 Indeed,[as] there is no one holy like the Lord,
indeed, there is no one besides you,
there is no rock like our God.
3 Don’t continue to talk proudly,
and don’t speak arrogantly,
for the Lord is a God of knowledge,
and by him actions are weighed.
4 The bows of warriors are shattered,[at]
but those who stumble are equipped with[au] strength.
5 Those who had an abundance of bread
now hire themselves out,
and those who were hungry
hunger no more.[av]
While the barren woman gives birth to seven children,[aw]
she who had many children languishes.
6 The Lord kills and gives life,
he brings people down to where the dead are[ax]
and he raises them up.
7 The Lord makes people poor
and he makes people rich,
he brings them low,
and he also exalts them.
8 He raises the poor up from the dust,
he lifts up the needy from the trash heap
to make them sit with princes
and inherit a seat of honor.
Indeed the pillars of the earth belong to the Lord,
and he has set the world on them.
9 He guards the steps[ay] of his faithful ones,
while the wicked are made silent[az] in darkness.
He grants the request of the one who prays.[ba]
He blesses the year of the righteous.[bb]
Indeed it’s not by strength that a person prevails.
10 The Lord will shatter his enemies[bc]
—those who contend against him.
Who is holy?[bd]
The one who will thunder[be] against them in the heavens.
The Lord will judge the ends of the earth,
he will give strength to his king,
and he will increase the strength of His anointed one.”

7 Cada año, cuando iban al templo del Señor, Peniná la molestaba de este modo; por eso Ana lloraba y no comía. 8 Entonces le decía Elcaná, su marido: «Ana, ¿por qué lloras? ¿Por qué estás triste y no comes? ¿Acaso no soy para ti mejor que diez hijos?»
9 En cierta ocasión, estando en Siló, Ana se levantó después de la comida. El sacerdote Elí estaba sentado en un sillón, cerca de la puerta de entrada del templo del Señor. 10 Y Ana, llorando y con el alma llena de amargura, se puso a orar al Señor 11 y le hizo esta promesa: «Señor todopoderoso: Si te dignas contemplar la aflicción de esta sierva tuya, y te acuerdas de mí y me concedes un hijo, yo lo dedicaré toda su vida a tu servicio, y en señal de esa dedicación no se le cortará el pelo.»
12 Como Ana estuvo orando largo rato ante el Señor, Elí se fijó en su boca; 13 pero ella oraba mentalmente. No se escuchaba su voz; sólo se movían sus labios. Elí creyó entonces que estaba borracha, 14 y le dijo:
—¿Hasta cuándo vas a estar borracha? ¡Deja ya el vino!
15 —No es eso, señor —contestó Ana—. No es que haya bebido vino ni ninguna bebida fuerte, sino que me siento angustiada y estoy desahogando mi pena delante del Señor. 16 No piense usted que soy una mala mujer, sino que he estado orando todo este tiempo porque estoy preocupada y afligida.
17 —Vete en paz —le contestó Elí—, y que el Dios de Israel te conceda lo que le has pedido.
18 —Muchísimas gracias —contestó ella.
Luego Ana regresó por donde había venido, y fue a comer, y nunca más volvió a estar triste. 19 A la mañana siguiente madrugaron y, después de adorar al Señor, regresaron a su casa en Ramá. Después Elcaná se unió con su esposa Ana, y el Señor tuvo presente la petición que ella le había hecho. 20 Así Ana quedó embarazada, y cuando se cumplió el tiempo dio a luz un hijo y le puso por nombre Samuel, porque se lo había pedido al Señor.
21 Luego fue Elcaná con toda su familia a Siló, para cumplir su promesa y ofrecer el sacrificio anual; 22 pero Ana no fue, porque le dijo a su marido:
—No iré hasta que destete al niño. Entonces lo llevaré para dedicárselo al Señor y que se quede allá para siempre.
23 Elcaná, su marido, le respondió:
—Haz lo que mejor te parezca. Quédate hasta que lo hayas destetado. Y que el Señor cumpla su promesa.
Así ella se quedó y crió a su hijo hasta que lo destetó. 24 Y cuando le quitó el pecho, y siendo todavía él un niño pequeño, lo llevó consigo al templo del Señor en Siló. También llevó tres becerros, veintidós litros de trigo y un cuero de vino. 25 Entonces sacrificaron un becerro y presentaron el niño a Elí. 26 Y Ana le dijo:
—Perdone usted, señor, pero tan cierto como que usted vive es que yo soy aquella mujer que estuvo orando al Señor aquí, cerca de usted. 27 Le pedí al Señor que me diera este hijo, y él me lo concedió. 28 Yo, por mi parte, lo he dedicado al Señor, y mientras viva estará dedicado a él.
Entonces Elí se inclinó hasta tocar el suelo con la frente, delante del Señor.

2 Y Ana oró de esta manera:
«Señor, yo me alegro en ti de corazón
porque tú me das nuevas fuerzas.
Puedo hablar contra mis enemigos
porque tú me has ayudado.

¡Nadie protege como tú, Dios nuestro!

que nadie se jacte demasiado,

y él pesa y juzga lo que hace el hombre.
4 Él destruye los arcos de los poderosos,
y reviste de poder a los débiles;

ahora ya no la tienen.
La mujer que no podía tener hijos,
ha dado a luz siete veces;

Hannah’s Vow
8 Then Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not (K)better to you than ten sons?”
9 So Hannah arose after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of (L)the [c]tabernacle of the Lord. 10 (M)And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the Lord and [d]wept in anguish. 11 Then she (N)made a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed (O)look on the affliction of Your maidservant and (P)remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and (Q)no razor shall come upon his head.”
12 And it happened, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli watched her mouth. 13 Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk. 14 So Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Put your wine away from you!”
15 But Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord, I am a woman of sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor intoxicating drink, but have (R)poured out my soul before the Lord. 16 Do not consider your maidservant a (S)wicked[e] woman, for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief I have spoken until now.”
17 Then Eli answered and said, (T)“Go in peace, and (U)the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him.”
18 And she said, (V)“Let your maidservant find favor in your sight.” So the woman (W)went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.

19 Then they rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord, and returned and came to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah (X)knew Hannah his wife, and the Lord (Y)remembered her. 20 So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name [f]Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the Lord.”
21 Now the man Elkanah and all his house (Z)went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice and his vow. 22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “Not until the child is weaned; then I will (AA)take him, that he may appear before the Lord and (AB)remain there (AC)forever.”
23 So (AD)Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him. Only let the Lord [g]establish [h]His word.” Then the woman stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him.
24 Now when she had weaned him, she (AE)took him up with her, with [i]three bulls, one ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and brought him to (AF)the house of the Lord in Shiloh. And the child was young. 25 Then they slaughtered a bull, and (AG)brought the child to Eli. 26 And she said, “O my lord! (AH)As your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the Lord. 27 (AI)For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition which I asked of Him. 28 Therefore I also have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives he shall be [j]lent to the Lord.” So they (AJ)worshiped the Lord there.
Hannah’s Prayer(AK)
2 And Hannah (AL)prayed and said:
(AM)“My heart rejoices in the Lord;
(AN)My [k]horn is exalted in the Lord.
[l]I smile at my enemies,
Because I (AO)rejoice in Your salvation.
2 “No(AP) one is holy like the Lord,
For there is (AQ)none besides You,
Nor is there any (AR)rock like our God.
3 “Talk no more so very proudly;
(AS)Let no arrogance come from your mouth,
For the Lord is the God of (AT)knowledge;
And by Him actions are weighed.
4 “The(AU) bows of the mighty men are broken,
And those who stumbled are girded with strength.
5 Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread,
And the hungry have ceased to hunger.
Even (AV)the barren has borne seven,
And (AW)she who has many children has become feeble.
6 “The(AX) Lord kills and makes alive;
He brings down to the grave and brings up.
7 The Lord (AY)makes poor and makes rich;
(AZ)He brings low and lifts up.
8 (BA)He raises the poor from the dust
And lifts the beggar from the ash heap,
(BB)To set them among princes
And make them inherit the throne of glory.
(BC)“For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,
And He has set the world upon them.
9 (BD)He will guard the feet of His saints,
But the (BE)wicked shall be silent in darkness.
“For by strength no man shall prevail.
10 The adversaries of the Lord shall be (BF)broken in pieces;
(BG)From heaven He will thunder against them.
(BH)The Lord will judge the ends of the earth.
