47 [a]Thus Saul established his reign over Israel. He fought against all of his surrounding enemies, against Moab, against the Ammonites, against Edom, against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines. He punished them on every side.

  1. 1 Samuel 14:47 This is a piece of archival information, of which there will be further examples in the history of the kings. The present chronological notice is very positive in its evaluation of Saul’s historical work as a whole and deserves credence. Verse 52 implies the beginnings of a standing army.
