²² and ^(A)whatever we ask, we receive from Him, because we ^(B)keep His commandments and do ^(C)the things that are pleasing in His sight.

²³ This is His commandment, that we ^[a](D)believe in ^(E)the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as ^(F)He ^[b]commanded us. ²⁴ The one who ^(G)keeps His commandments ^(H)remains in Him, and He in him. ^(I)We know by this that ^(J)He remains in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

^20 (A)If someone says, “I love God,” and yet he ^(B)hates his brother or sister, he is a ^(C)liar; for ^(D)the one who does not love his brother and sister whom he has seen, ^(E)cannot love God, whom he has not seen. ²¹ And ^(F)this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God ^(G)must also love his brother and sister.

⁵ Now I ask you, lady, ^(A)not as though I were writing to you a new commandment, but the one which we have had ^(B)from the beginning, that we ^(C)love one another. ⁶ And ^(D)this is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, ^(E)just as you have heard ^(F)from the beginning, that you are to walk in it.
