Greeting

1 Paul, ^(A)Silvanus, and Timothy,

To the church of the ^(B)Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace to you and peace ^[a]from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Their Good Example

²^(C)We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers, ³remembering without ceasing ^(D)your work of faith, ^(E)labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father, ⁴knowing, beloved brethren, ^(F)your election by God. ⁵For ^(G)our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, ^(H)and in the Holy Spirit ^(I)and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.

⁶And ^(J)you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, ^(K)with joy of the Holy Spirit, ⁷so that you became examples to all in Macedonia and Achaia who believe. ⁸For from you the word of the Lord ^(L)has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also ^(M)in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything. ⁹For they themselves declare concerning us ^(N)what manner of entry we had to you, ^(O)and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, ¹⁰and ^(P)to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us ^(Q)from the wrath to come.

79 O God, the ^[a]nations have come into ^(A)Your inheritance;
Your holy temple they have defiled;
^(B)They have laid Jerusalem ^[b]in heaps.
²^(C)The dead bodies of Your servants
They have given as food for the birds of the heavens,
The flesh of Your saints to the beasts of the earth.
³Their blood they have shed like water all around Jerusalem,
And there was no one to bury them.
⁴We have become a reproach to our ^(D)neighbors,
A scorn and derision to those who are around us.

⁵^(E)How long, Lord?
Will You be angry forever?
Will Your ^(F)jealousy burn like fire?
⁶^(G)Pour out Your wrath on the ^[c]nations that ^(H)do not know You,
And on the kingdoms that ^(I)do not call on Your name.
⁷For they have devoured Jacob,
And laid waste his dwelling place.

⁸^(J)Oh, do not remember ^[d]former iniquities against us!
Let Your tender mercies come speedily to meet us,
For we have been brought very low.
⁹Help us, O God of our salvation,
For the glory of Your name;
And deliver us, and provide atonement for our sins,
^(K)For Your name’s sake!
¹⁰^(L)Why should the ^[e]nations say,
“Where is their God?”
Let there be known among the nations in our sight
The avenging of the blood of Your servants which has been shed.

¹¹Let ^(M)the groaning of the prisoner come before You;
According to the greatness of Your ^[f]power
Preserve those who are appointed to die;
¹²And return to our neighbors ^(N)sevenfold into their bosom
^(O)Their reproach with which they have reproached You, O Lord.

¹³So ^(P)we, Your people and sheep of Your pasture,
Will give You thanks forever;
^(Q)We will show forth Your praise to all generations.

And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding;

Its surface was covered with nettles;
Its stone wall was broken down.
³²When I saw it, I considered it well;
I looked on it and received instruction:
³³^(B)A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to rest;
³⁴^(C)So shall your poverty come like ^[a]a prowler,
And your need like ^[b]an armed man.
