Preparados para el día del Señor

5 Ahora bien, hermanos, con respecto a los tiempos(A) y a las épocas, no tienen necesidad de que se les escriba(B) nada. 2 Pues ustedes mismos saben perfectamente que el día del Señor vendrá[a](C) así como un ladrón en la noche(D); 3 que cuando estén diciendo: «Paz y seguridad(E)», entonces la destrucción[b] vendrá sobre ellos repentinamente[c](F), como dolores de parto a una mujer que está encinta(G), y no escaparán.

4 Pero ustedes, hermanos, no están en tinieblas(H), para que el día los sorprenda como ladrón[d](I); 5 porque todos ustedes son hijos de la luz(J) e hijos del día. No somos de la noche ni de las tinieblas(K). 6 Por tanto, no durmamos(L) como los demás(M), sino estemos alerta y seamos sobrios[e](N). 7 Porque los que duermen, de noche duermen, y los que se emborrachan, de noche se emborrachan(O).

8 Pero puesto que nosotros somos del día(P), seamos sobrios[f](Q), habiéndonos puesto la coraza(R) de la fe y del amor(S), y por casco(T) la esperanza de la salvación(U). 9 Porque no nos ha destinado[g] Dios para ira(V), sino para obtener salvación por medio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo(W), 10 que murió por nosotros(X), para que ya sea que estemos despiertos o dormidos, vivamos junto con Él. 11 Por tanto, confórtense los unos a los otros, y edifíquense el uno al otro(Y), tal como lo están haciendo.

Deberes prácticos de la vida cristiana

12 Pero les rogamos hermanos, que reconozcan[h](Z) a los que con diligencia trabajan entre ustedes(AA), y los dirigen[i](AB) en el Señor y los instruyen, 13 y que los tengan en muy alta estima con amor, por causa de su trabajo. Vivan en paz los unos con los otros(AC). 14 Les exhortamos, hermanos, a que amonesten a los indisciplinados[j](AD), animen a los desalentados(AE), sostengan a los débiles(AF) y sean pacientes(AG) con todos. 15 Miren que ninguno devuelva a otro mal por mal(AH), sino que procuren siempre lo bueno los unos para con los otros(AI), y para con todos.

16 Estén siempre gozosos(AJ). 17 Oren sin cesar(AK). 18 Den gracias en todo(AL), porque esta es la voluntad de Dios para ustedes en Cristo Jesús. 19 No apaguen el Espíritu(AM). 20 No desprecien las profecías[k](AN). 21 Antes bien, examínenlo todo cuidadosamente(AO), retengan lo bueno(AP). 22 Absténganse de toda forma[l] de mal.

Pablo ora por la santificación de los tesalonicenses

23 Y que el mismo(AQ) Dios de paz(AR) los santifique por completo[m]; y que todo su ser, espíritu, alma y cuerpo(AS), sea preservado irreprensible(AT) para[n] la venida de nuestro Señor Jesucristo(AU). 24 Fiel(AV) es Aquel que los llama(AW), el cual también lo hará.

25 Hermanos, oren por nosotros[o](AX).

The Day of the Lord

5 Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates(A) we do not need to write to you,(B) 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord(C) will come like a thief in the night.(D) 3 While people are saying, “Peace and safety,”(E) destruction will come on them suddenly,(F) as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.(G)

4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness(H) so that this day should surprise you like a thief.(I) 5 You are all children of the light(J) and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep,(K) but let us be awake(L) and sober.(M) 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.(N) 8 But since we belong to the day,(O) let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate,(P) and the hope of salvation(Q) as a helmet.(R) 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath(S) but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.(T) 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.(U) 11 Therefore encourage one another(V) and build each other up,(W) just as in fact you are doing.

Final Instructions

12 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard(X) among you, who care for you in the Lord(Y) and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.(Z) 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle(AA) and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak,(AB) be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong,(AC) but always strive to do what is good for each other(AD) and for everyone else.

16 Rejoice always,(AE) 17 pray continually,(AF) 18 give thanks in all circumstances;(AG) for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

19 Do not quench the Spirit.(AH) 20 Do not treat prophecies(AI) with contempt 21 but test them all;(AJ) hold on to what is good,(AK) 22 reject every kind of evil.

23 May God himself, the God of peace,(AL) sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul(AM) and body be kept blameless(AN) at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.(AO) 24 The one who calls(AP) you is faithful,(AQ) and he will do it.(AR)

25 Brothers and sisters, pray for us.(AS) 26 Greet all God’s people with a holy kiss.(AT) 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.(AU)

5 But concerning (A)the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. 2 For you yourselves know perfectly that (B)the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. 3 For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then (C)sudden destruction comes upon them, (D)as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. 4 (E)But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 You are all (F)sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 (G)Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but (H)let us watch and be [a]sober. 7 For (I)those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk (J)are drunk at night. 8 But let us who are of the day be sober, (K)putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For (L)God did not appoint us to wrath, (M)but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 (N)who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

Various Exhortations

12 And we urge you, brethren, (O)to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and [d]admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. (P)Be at peace among yourselves.

14 Now we [e]exhort you, brethren, (Q)warn those who are [f]unruly, (R)comfort the fainthearted, (S)uphold the weak, (T)be patient with all. 15 (U)See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always (V)pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.

16 (W)Rejoice always, 17 (X)pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

19 (Y)Do not quench the Spirit. 20 (Z)Do not despise prophecies. 21 (AA)Test all things; (AB)hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.

Blessing and Admonition

23 Now may (AC)the God of peace Himself (AD)sanctify[g] you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body (AE)be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is (AF)faithful, who also will (AG)do it.

25 Brethren, pray for us.

26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.

27 I charge you by the Lord that this [h]epistle be read to all the [i]holy brethren.

28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

De terugkomst van Jezus

5 Maar we hoeven jullie niet te schrijven hoe en wanneer dit zal gebeuren, broeders en zusters. 2 Want jullie weten zelf heel goed dat de dag van de Heer[a] net zo onverwachts komt als een dief in de nacht. 3 De mensen zullen denken dat alles vredig en rustig is. Maar dan worden ze plotseling door Gods straf getroffen. En ze zullen er niet aan kunnen ontsnappen. 4 Maar jullie, broeders en zusters, leven niet in het donker. Daardoor zal die dag jullie niet overvallen als een dief. 5 Want jullie horen bij het licht en bij de dag. Wij horen niet bij de nacht of bij het donker. 6 Daarom moeten we ook niet geestelijk slapen, zoals de andere mensen. Maar we moeten geestelijk wakker zijn en goed opletten en nuchter zijn. 7 Want de mensen die slapen, slapen 's nachts. En de mensen die dronken worden, zijn 's nachts dronken. 8 Maar wij horen bij de dag. Daarom moeten wij nuchter zijn. Ons geloof en onze liefde zijn ons harnas. Onze zekerheid over onze redding is de helm op ons hoofd. Als we dat harnas aantrekken en die helm opzetten, zullen die onze bescherming zijn. 9 Want we zijn niet bedoeld om door God gestraft te worden, maar om gered te worden door onze Heer Jezus Christus die voor ons is gestorven. 10 Want doordat Hij voor ons is gestorven, zullen we samen met Hem leven. Het maakt niet uit of we nog leven of dat we al gestorven zijn. 11 Bemoedig elkaar hiermee en bouw elkaars geloof op. Maar dat doen jullie ook.

Goede raad over diverse dingen

12 We vragen jullie ook, broeders en zusters, om goed te luisteren naar de mensen die hard voor jullie werken. Ik bedoel hen die jullie leiden namens de Heer en die jullie opvoeden in het geloof. 13 Heb respect voor hen. En houd van hen vanwege alles wat ze voor jullie doen. En maak geen ruzie met elkaar.

14 Broeders en zusters, er zijn mensen bij jullie die niet meer willen werken omdat ze denken dat de Heer toch binnenkort zal komen. Zeg tegen hen dat ze orde in hun leven moeten brengen en weer aan het werk moeten gaan. En bemoedig de mensen die de moed hebben verloren. Help de mensen die een zwak geloof hebben. Heb geduld met elkaar. 15 Als iemand je kwaad doet, doe dan niet iets kwaads terug. Doe liever allemaal je best om altijd het goede te doen. Niet alleen voor elkaar, maar voor alle mensen.

16 Wees altijd blij. 17 Bid zonder ophouden. 18 Dank God altijd, wát er ook gebeurt. Want dat is wat God van jullie wil nu jullie bij Jezus Christus horen.

19 Doof het vuur van de Heilige Geest in jullie binnenste niet uit. 20 Schuif profetieën niet aan de kant. 21 Ga bij alle dingen na of het klopt en bewaar dat wat goed was. 22 Doe niets wat ook maar een béétje verkeerd is.

Slot

23 Ik bid dat de God van vrede jullie helemaal heilig zal maken. Dan zullen jullie in geest, ziel en lichaam helemaal zuiver zijn als de Heer Jezus Christus terugkomt. 24 God die jullie roept, is trouw: Hij zal dat zeker doen.

25 Broeders en zusters, bid voor ons. 26 Groet alle gelovigen met een heilige kus.

27 Ik beveel jullie namens de Heer dat deze brief aan alle broeders en zusters voorgelezen wordt.

28 Ik bid dat de Heer Jezus Christus in alles goed voor jullie zal zijn.

  1. 1 Thessalonicenzen 5:2 'De dag van de Heer' is de tijd dat God zal oordelen over de mensen. Het woord komt heel vaak voor in de boeken van de profeten van het Oude Testament. Daar houdt het woord altijd verband met Gods straf. Pas in het Nieuwe Testament houdt het woord ook verband met de terugkomst van Jezus. De mensen die niet in Hem hebben willen geloven, zullen dan veroordeeld worden.
