3 POR lo cual, no pudiendo esperar más, acordamos quedarnos solos en Atenas,
2 Y enviamos á Timoteo, nuestro hermano, y ministro de Dios, y colaborador nuestro en el evangelio de Cristo, á confirmaros y exhortaros en vuestra fe,
3 Para que nadie se conmueva por estas tribulaciones; porque vosotros sabéis que nosotros somos puestos para esto.
4 Que aun estando con vosotros, os predecíamos que habíamos de pasar tribulaciones, como ha acontecido y sabéis.
5 Por lo cual, también yo, no esperando más, he enviado á reconocer vuestra fe, no sea que os haya tentado el tentador, y que nuestro trabajo haya sido en vano.
6 Empero volviendo de vosotros á nosotros Timoteo, y haciéndonos saber vuestra fe y caridad, y que siempre tenéis buena memoria de nosotros, deseando vernos, como también nosotros á vosotros,
7 En ello, hermanos, recibimos consolación de vosotros en toda nuestra necesidad y aflicción por causa de vuestra fe:
8 Porque ahora vivimos, si vosotros estáis firmes en el Señor.
9 Por lo cual, ¿qué hacimiento de gracias podremos dar á Dios por vosotros, por todo el gozo con que nos gozamos á causa de vosotros delante de nuestro Dios,
10 Orando de noche y de día con grande instancia, que veamos vuestro rostro, y que cumplamos lo que falta á vuestra fe?
11 Mas el mismo Dios y Padre nuestro, y el Señor nuestro Jesucristo, encamine nuestro viaje á vosotros.
12 Y á vosotros multiplique el Señor, y haga abundar el amor entre vosotros, y para con todos, como es también de nosotros para con vosotros;
13 Para que sean confirmados vuestros corazones en santidad, irreprensibles delante de Dios y nuestro Padre, para la venida de nuestro Señor Jesucristo con todos sus santos.

3 Por tanto, cuando ya no pudimos soportarlo más, pensamos que era mejor quedarnos solos en Atenas. 2 Así que enviamos a Timoteo, hermano nuestro y colaborador de Dios[a] en el evangelio de Cristo, con el fin de afianzarlos y animarlos en la fe 3 para que nadie fuera perturbado por estos sufrimientos. Ustedes mismos saben que se nos destinó para esto, 4 pues cuando estábamos con ustedes les advertimos que íbamos a padecer sufrimientos. Y así sucedió. 5 Por eso, cuando ya no pude soportarlo más, mandé a Timoteo a indagar acerca de su fe, no fuera que el tentador los hubiera inducido a hacer lo malo y que nuestro trabajo hubiera sido en vano.
El informe alentador de Timoteo
6 Ahora Timoteo acaba de volver de Tesalónica con buenas noticias de la fe y del amor de ustedes. Nos dice que conservan gratos recuerdos de nosotros y que tienen muchas ganas de vernos, tanto como nosotros a ustedes. 7 Por eso, hermanos, en medio de todas nuestras angustias y sufrimientos ustedes nos han dado ánimo por su fe. 8 ¡Ahora sí que vivimos al saber que están firmes en el Señor! 9 ¿Cómo podemos agradecer bastante a nuestro Dios por ustedes y por toda la alegría que nos han proporcionado delante de él? 10 Día y noche le suplicamos que nos permita verlos de nuevo para suplir lo que falta a su fe.
11 Que el Dios y Padre nuestro, y nuestro Señor Jesús, nos preparen el camino para ir a verlos. 12 Que el Señor los haga crecer para que se amen más y más unos a otros, y a todos, tal como nosotros los amamos a ustedes. 13 Que los fortalezca interiormente para que, cuando nuestro Señor Jesús venga con todos los que han creído en él, la santidad de ustedes sea intachable delante de nuestro Dios y Padre.

Standing Firm in the Lord.[a] 1 Therefore, when we[b] could not stand it any longer, we decided to remain alone in Athens. 2 We sent Timothy, our brother and coworker for God[c] in the gospel of Christ, to confirm and encourage you in your faith, 3 so that no one might be troubled by these hardships.
You yourselves realize that we were destined to endure such afflictions. 4 In fact, when we were with you, we warned you beforehand that we could suffer persecution, and that is what has now come to pass, as you are well aware. 5 For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to learn of your faith, lest the tempter might have put you to the test and all our labor might have been for naught.
6 But Timothy has just now returned to us from you and brought us the joyful news of your faith and love. He tells us that you always speak fondly of us and long to see us just as much as we long to see you.[d] 7 For this reason, brethren, in the midst of our distress and hardship we have been reassured by your faith. 8 For now we live inasmuch as you stand firm in the Lord.
Plea for Growth in Holiness. 9 How can we possibly give thanks to God for all the joy we feel in the presence of our God because of you? 10 We pray fervently day and night that we will be allowed to see you face to face once again and complete whatever may be lacking in your faith.
11 May our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus prepare the way to you. 12 May the Lord[e] cause your love to increase and overflow for one another and for everyone else, just as our love does for you. 13 May he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may stand blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his holy ones.[f] [Amen.]

- 1 Thessalonians 3:1 Persecution has ravaged the small community. Sent to these new Christians, Timothy reassures Paul. In the Apostle’s thanksgiving and in his prayer for the continual progress of the community, we divine his deep attachment for Christians that he has evangelized. The missionary’s action must be pervaded by prayer—both private and liturgical.
- 1 Thessalonians 3:1 We: in this First Letter Paul uses the first person plural extensively. That is not true of the later letters.
- 1 Thessalonians 3:2 Coworker for God: see also 1 Cor 3:9. Gospel of Christ: see notes on 1 Thes 1:5 and Mk 1:1. Confirm: literally, “build you up.”
- 1 Thessalonians 3:6 Paul is rendered joyful because of their “faith” (i.e., their right attitude toward God), their “love” (i.e., their right attitude toward others), and their longing “to see” him (i.e., their right attitude toward the Apostle).
- 1 Thessalonians 3:12 Lord: in Paul’s usage this word is usually applied to Jesus, not the Father (see, e.g., Rom 10:9; 1 Cor 1:2; Phil 2:11).
- 1 Thessalonians 3:13 Holy ones: usually translated as “saints,” referring to all Christians.
