Samuel påminner folket om Herrens omsorg
12 Sedan talade Samuel till folket på nytt:Lyssna nu!, sa han. Jag har gjort det ni bett mig om. Jag har gett er en kung.
2 Här står jag nu med mina söner, en gammal, gråhårig man, som har varit i Herrens tjänst sedan jag var liten.
3 Här inför Herren och hans smorde kung frågar jag om jag har stulit någons oxe eller åsna, eller om jag någon gång har lurat er eller förtryckt er? Har jag någonsin tagit emot mutor? Tala om det för mig, så ska jag ersätta dem som jag har skadat.
4 Nej, svarade de. Du har aldrig bedragit eller förtryckt oss på något sätt, och du har aldrig tagit mutor.
5 Herren och hans smorde kung är mina vittnen på att ni inte har något att anklaga mig för, sa Samuel.Ja, det är sant, svarade de.
6 Det var Herren som gav er Mose och Aron, fortsatte Samuel. Han förde era förfäder ut ur Egyptens land.
7 Bli nu stilla inför Herren medan jag påminner er om allt det goda han har gjort för er och för era förfäder.
8 När israeliterna var i Egypten och ropade till Herren, sände han dem Mose och Aron, som ledde dem ut ur Egypten och lät dem bosätta sig här i landet.
9 Men folket glömde snart Herren, sin Gud, så han lät dem bli besegrade av Sisera, som var general i Hasors armé, och av filisteerna och av Moabs kung.
10 Då ropade de till Herren igen och bekände att de hade syndat genom att vända honom ryggen och i stället tillbe Baal och Astarterna: 'Vi vill tillbe dig och enbart dig, om du bara vill befria oss från våra fiender
11 Då sände Herren Gideon, Barak, Jefta och Samuel för att rädda er, och så fick ni leva i trygghet.
12 När ni blev rädda för Nahas, Ammons kung, kom ni till mig och sa att ni behövde en kung som kunde regera över er. Men ni hade redan en kung i Herren. Han är och har alltid varit er kung.
13 Och här är nu den kung ni själva har valt. Titta noga på honom! Ni har bett att få honom, och Herren har svarat på er bön.
14 Om ni vill visa vördnad och tillbe Herren och lyssna till hans befallningar och inte göra uppror mot honom, ja, om både ni och er kung följer Herren, er Gud, så kommer allt att gå väl.
15 Men om ni gör uppror mot Herrens bud och vägrar att lyssna till honom, så kommer Herren att behandla er på samma sätt som han behandlade era förfäder.
16 Var uppmärksamma på när Herren gör stora under.
17 Ni vet att det inte regnar under denna tid på året, under veteskörden. Jag ska be till Herren att han sänder åska och regn i dag. Då kommer ni att inse hur ont och orätt ni har handlat genom att be om en kung.
18 Samuel ropade sedan till Herren, som sände åska och regn, och hela folket darrade inför Herren och Samuel.
19 Be för oss, så vi inte dör, ropade de till Samuel. Nu har vi lagt ännu en synd till alla andra genom att be om en kung.
20 Var inte rädda, tröstade Samuel dem. Ni har visserligen handlat fel, men se nu till att ni tillber Herren helhjärtat och inte vänder honom ryggen på något sätt.
21 Andra gudar kan inte hjälpa er.
22 Och Herren ska inte överge sitt eget folk, för det skulle vanhedra hans mäktiga namn. Han gjorde er till sitt utvalda folk just därför att han ville ha det så!
23 Och när det gäller mig, så kan jag inte ens tänka mig att jag skulle synda mot Herren genom att sluta att be för er. Jag ska fortsätta att undervisa er om det goda och rätta.
24 Lita på Herren och var uppriktiga när ni tillber honom! Tänk på allt det underbara han har gjort för er!
25 Men om ni fortsätter att synda, så ska både ni och er kung förgås.

Despedida de Samuel
12 Samuel dijo a todo Israel:
— Ya ven que he escuchado todas las peticiones que me han hecho y que les he nombrado un rey. 2 Pues bien, ahí tienen al rey que ha de guiarlos. Por lo que a mí respecta, ya estoy viejo y canoso, y mis hijos están entre ustedes. Los he dirigido desde mi juventud hasta el día de hoy. 3 Y aquí me tienen si quieren acusarme de algo ante el Señor y ante su ungido. ¿Le he quitado a alguien un buey o un asno? ¿He explotado o maltratado a alguno? ¿He aceptado algún soborno para hacerme el de la vista gorda? Si es así, se lo devolveré.
4 Respondieron:
— No nos has explotado ni maltratado, ni has aceptado sobornos de nadie.
5 Samuel replicó:
— El Señor es hoy testigo contra ustedes, al igual que su ungido, de que no han encontrado en mí culpa alguna.
Respondieron:
— Sí, es testigo.
6 Y Samuel dijo al pueblo:
— El Señor es quien eligió a Moisés y Aarón y quien sacó a los antepasados de ustedes de Egipto. 7 Y ahora prepárense, porque voy a pedirles cuentas ante el Señor de todos los beneficios que él les ha hecho a ustedes y a sus antepasados. 8 Cuando Jacob llegó a Egipto, sus antepasados pidieron auxilio al Señor y él envió a Moisés y a Aarón para que sacasen a los antepasados de ustedes de Egipto y los instalasen en este lugar. 9 Pero ellos olvidaron al Señor su Dios y él los entregó en poder de Sísara, general del ejército de Jasor, y en poder de los filisteos y del rey de Moab, que lucharon contra ellos. 10 Entonces clamaron al Señor, diciendo: “Hemos pecado, abandonando al Señor para rendir culto a las imágenes de Baal y de Astarté. Líbranos del poder de nuestros enemigos y te serviremos”. 11 Y el Señor envió a Jerubaal, a Barac, a Jefté y a Samuel para que los librasen del poder de sus enemigos vecinos y pudieran ustedes vivir tranquilos. 12 Ahora, cuando han visto que Najás, el rey de los amonitas, los amenazaba, me han pedido un rey que los gobernara, aunque el Señor su Dios era el rey de ustedes. 13 Pues bien, ahí tienen al rey que han elegido y que han exigido. Ya ven que el Señor les ha dado un rey. 14 Si honran al Señor y le dan culto, si escuchan su palabra y no desobedecen sus mandatos, entonces les irá bien tanto a ustedes como al rey que los gobierna. 15 Pero si no escuchan la palabra del Señor y desobedecen sus mandatos, el Señor los castigará a ustedes como castigó a su antepasados. 16 Y ahora permanezcan aquí y contemplarán el gran prodigio que Dios va a realizar delante de ustedes. 17 ¿No estamos en época de siega? Pues voy a invocar al Señor y él hará tronar y llover, para que ustedes reconozcan el gran pecado que han cometido ante al Señor al pedir un rey.
18 Samuel invocó al Señor y el Señor envió aquel día truenos y lluvia. Todo el pueblo sintió pánico del Señor y de Samuel. 19 Y dijeron a Samuel:
— Intercede por tus siervos ante el Señor tu Dios, para que no perezcamos, ya que hemos añadido a todos nuestros pecados el delito de pedirnos un rey.
20 Samuel respondió al pueblo:
— No teman. Es cierto que han cometido ese delito, pero ahora no se aparten del Señor y sírvanlo de todo corazón. 21 No se aparten para seguir a nulidades que no pueden ayudarlos ni salvarlos, porque son inútiles. 22 El Señor no abandonará a su pueblo por el honor de su nombre, pues el Señor ha decidido convertirlos en su pueblo. 23 Por mi parte, Dios me libre de pecar contra el Señor, dejando de interceder por ustedes. Yo les enseñaré el camino bueno y recto. 24 Así que honren al Señor y sírvanle con sinceridad y de todo corazón, ya que han reconocido los muchos beneficios que les ha hecho. 25 Pero si persisten en el mal serán aniquilados tanto ustedes como su rey.

Samuel’s Address at Saul’s Coronation
12 Now Samuel said to all Israel: “Indeed I have [a]heeded (A)your voice in all that you said to me, and (B)have made a king over you. 2 And now here is the king, (C)walking before you; (D)and I am old and grayheaded, and look, my sons are with you. I have walked before you from my childhood to this day. 3 Here I am. Witness against me before the Lord and before (E)His anointed: (F)Whose ox have I taken, or whose donkey have I taken, or whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed, or from whose hand have I received any (G)bribe with which to (H)blind my eyes? I will restore it to you.”
4 And they said, (I)“You have not cheated us or oppressed us, nor have you taken anything from any man’s hand.”
5 Then he said to them, “The Lord is witness against you, and His anointed is witness this day, (J)that you have not found anything (K)in my hand.”
And they answered, “He is witness.”
6 Then Samuel said to the people, (L)“It is the Lord who raised up Moses and Aaron, and who brought your fathers up from the land of Egypt. 7 Now therefore, stand still, that I may (M)reason with you before the Lord concerning all the (N)righteous acts of the Lord which He did to you and your fathers: 8 (O)When Jacob had gone into [b]Egypt, and your fathers (P)cried out to the Lord, then the Lord (Q)sent Moses and Aaron, who brought your fathers out of Egypt and made them dwell in this place. 9 And when they (R)forgot the Lord their God, He sold them into the hand of (S)Sisera, commander of the army of Hazor, into the hand of the (T)Philistines, and into the hand of the king of (U)Moab; and they fought against them. 10 Then they cried out to the Lord, and said, (V)‘We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord (W)and served the Baals and [c]Ashtoreths; but now deliver us from the hand of our enemies, and we will serve You.’ 11 And the Lord sent [d]Jerubbaal, [e]Bedan, (X)Jephthah, and (Y)Samuel,[f] and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side; and you dwelt in safety. 12 And when you saw that (Z)Nahash king of the Ammonites came against you, (AA)you said to me, ‘No, but a king shall reign over us,’ when (AB)the Lord your God was your king.
13 “Now therefore, (AC)here is the king (AD)whom you have chosen and whom you have desired. And take note, (AE)the Lord has set a king over you. 14 If you (AF)fear the Lord and serve Him and obey His voice, and do not rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then both you and the king who reigns over you will continue following the Lord your God. 15 However, if you do (AG)not obey the voice of the Lord, but (AH)rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then the hand of the Lord will be against you, as it was against your fathers.
16 “Now therefore, (AI)stand and see this great thing which the Lord will do before your eyes: 17 Is today not the (AJ)wheat harvest? (AK)I will call to the Lord, and He will send thunder and (AL)rain, that you may perceive and see that (AM)your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the Lord, in asking a king for yourselves.”
18 So Samuel called to the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day; and (AN)all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.
19 And all the people said to Samuel, (AO)“Pray for your servants to the Lord your God, that we may not die; for we have added to all our sins the evil of asking a king for ourselves.”
20 Then Samuel said to the people, “Do not fear. You have done all this wickedness; (AP)yet do not turn aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. 21 And (AQ)do not turn aside; (AR)for then you would go after empty things which cannot profit or deliver, for they are nothing. 22 For (AS)the Lord will not forsake (AT)His people, (AU)for His great name’s sake, because (AV)it has pleased the Lord to make you His people. 23 Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord (AW)in ceasing to pray for you; but (AX)I will teach you the (AY)good and the right way. 24 (AZ)Only fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for (BA)consider what (BB)great things He has done for you. 25 But if you still do wickedly, (BC)you shall be swept away, (BD)both you and your king.”

Samuel’s Farewell Speech
12 Samuel said to all Israel, “I have listened(A) to everything you said to me and have set a king(B) over you. 2 Now you have a king as your leader.(C) As for me, I am old and gray, and my sons(D) are here with you. I have been your leader from my youth until this day. 3 Here I stand. Testify against me in the presence of the Lord and his anointed.(E) Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey(F) have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe(G) to make me shut my eyes? If I have done(H) any of these things, I will make it right.”(I)
4 “You have not cheated or oppressed us,” they replied. “You have not taken anything from anyone’s hand.”
5 Samuel said to them, “The Lord is witness(J) against you, and also his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything(K) in my hand.(L)”
“He is witness,” they said.
6 Then Samuel said to the people, “It is the Lord who appointed Moses and Aaron and brought(M) your ancestors up out of Egypt. 7 Now then, stand(N) here, because I am going to confront(O) you with evidence before the Lord as to all the righteous acts(P) performed by the Lord for you and your ancestors.
8 “After Jacob(Q) entered Egypt, they cried(R) to the Lord for help, and the Lord sent(S) Moses and Aaron, who brought your ancestors out of Egypt and settled them in this place.
9 “But they forgot(T) the Lord their God; so he sold them(U) into the hand of Sisera,(V) the commander of the army of Hazor,(W) and into the hands of the Philistines(X) and the king of Moab,(Y) who fought against them. 10 They cried(Z) out to the Lord and said, ‘We have sinned; we have forsaken(AA) the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtoreths.(AB) But now deliver us from the hands of our enemies, and we will serve you.’ 11 Then the Lord sent Jerub-Baal,[a](AC) Barak,[b](AD) Jephthah(AE) and Samuel,[c](AF) and he delivered you from the hands of your enemies all around you, so that you lived in safety.
12 “But when you saw that Nahash(AG) king(AH) of the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we want a king to rule(AI) over us’—even though the Lord your God was your king. 13 Now here is the king(AJ) you have chosen, the one you asked(AK) for; see, the Lord has set a king over you. 14 If you fear(AL) the Lord and serve and obey him and do not rebel(AM) against his commands, and if both you and the king who reigns over you follow the Lord your God—good! 15 But if you do not obey the Lord, and if you rebel against(AN) his commands, his hand will be against you, as it was against your ancestors.
16 “Now then, stand still(AO) and see(AP) this great thing the Lord is about to do before your eyes! 17 Is it not wheat harvest(AQ) now? I will call(AR) on the Lord to send thunder(AS) and rain.(AT) And you will realize what an evil(AU) thing you did in the eyes of the Lord when you asked for a king.”
18 Then Samuel called on the Lord,(AV) and that same day the Lord sent thunder and rain. So all the people stood in awe(AW) of the Lord and of Samuel.
19 The people all said to Samuel, “Pray(AX) to the Lord your God for your servants so that we will not die,(AY) for we have added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king.”
20 “Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “You have done all this evil;(AZ) yet do not turn away from the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. 21 Do not turn away after useless(BA) idols.(BB) They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless. 22 For the sake(BC) of his great name(BD) the Lord will not reject(BE) his people, because the Lord was pleased to make(BF) you his own. 23 As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray(BG) for you. And I will teach(BH) you the way that is good and right. 24 But be sure to fear(BI) the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart;(BJ) consider(BK) what great(BL) things he has done for you. 25 Yet if you persist(BM) in doing evil, both you and your king(BN) will perish.”(BO)
