6 Rimase l'arca del Signore nel territorio dei Filistei sette mesi. 2 Poi i Filistei convocarono i sacerdoti e gli indovini e dissero: «Che dobbiamo fare dell'arca del Signore? Indicateci il modo di rimandarla alla sua sede». 3 Risposero: «Se intendete rimandare l'arca del Dio d'Israele, non rimandatela vuota, ma pagate un tributo in ammenda della vostra colpa. Allora guarirete e vi sarà noto perché non si è ritirata da voi la sua mano». 4 Chiesero: «Quale riparazione dobbiamo pagarle?». Risposero: «Secondo il numero dei capi dei Filistei, cinque bubboni d'oro e cinque topi d'oro, perché unico è stato il flagello per tutto il popolo e per i vostri capi. 5 Fate dunque immagini dei vostri bubboni e immagini dei vostri topi che infestano la terra e datele in omaggio al Dio d'Israele, sperando che sia tolto il peso della sua mano da voi, dal vostro dio e dal vostro paese. 6 Perché ostinarvi come si sono ostinati gli Egiziani e il faraone? Dopo essere stati colpiti dai flagelli, non li lasciarono forse andare, cosicché essi partirono? 7 Dunque fate un carro nuovo, poi prendete due vacche allattanti sulle quali non sia mai stato posto il giogo e attaccate queste vacche al carro, togliendo loro i vitelli e riconducendoli alla stalla. 8 Quindi prendete l'arca del Signore, collocatela sul carro e ponete gli oggetti d'oro che dovete pagarle in riparazione in una cesta appesa di fianco. Poi fatela partire e lasciate che se ne vada. 9 E state a vedere: se salirà a Bet-Sèmes per la via che porta al suo territorio, essa ci ha provocato tutti questi mali così grandi; se no, sapremo che non ci ha colpiti la sua mano, ma per puro caso abbiamo avuto questo incidente». 10 Quegli uomini fecero in tal modo. Presero due vacche allattanti, le attaccarono al carro e chiusero nella stalla i loro vitelli. 11 Quindi collocarono l'arca del Signore sul carro con la cesta e i topi d'oro e le immagini dei bubboni. 12 Le vacche andarono diritte per la strada di Bet-Sèmes percorrendo sicure una sola via e muggendo continuamente, ma non piegando né a destra né a sinistra. I capi dei Filistei le seguirono sino al confine con Bet-Sèmes.
L'arca a Bet-Sèmes
13 Gli abitanti di Bet-Sèmes stavano facendo la mietitura del grano nella pianura. Alzando gli occhi, scorsero l'arca ed esultarono a quella vista. 14 Il carro giunse al campo di Giosuè di Bet-Sèmes e si fermò là dove era una grossa pietra. Allora fecero a pezzi i legni del carro e offrirono le vacche in olocausto al Signore. 15 I leviti avevano tolto l'arca del Signore e la cesta che vi era appesa, nella quale stavano gli oggetti d'oro, e l'avevano posta sulla grossa pietra. In quel giorno gli uomini di Bet-Sèmes offrirono olocausti e immolarono vittime al Signore. 16 I cinque capi dei Filistei stettero ad osservare, poi tornarono il giorno stesso ad Ekron. 17 Sono questi i bubboni d'oro che i Filistei pagarono in ammenda al Signore: uno per Asdod, uno per Gaza, uno per Ascalon, uno per Gat, uno per Ekron. 18 Invece i topi d'oro erano pari al numero delle città filistee appartenenti ai cinque capi, dalle fortezze sino ai villaggi di campagna. A testimonianza di tutto ciò rimane oggi nel campo di Giosuè a Bet-Sèmes la grossa pietra, sulla quale avevano deposto l'arca del Signore.
19 Ma il Signore percosse gli uomini di Bet-Sèmes, perché avevano guardato l'arca del Signore; colpì nel popolo settanta persone su cinquantamila e il popolo fu in lutto perché il Signore aveva inflitto alla loro gente questo grave castigo.
L'arca a Kiriat-Iearim
20 Gli uomini di Bet-Sèmes allora esclamarono: «Chi mai potrà stare alla presenza del Signore, questo Dio così santo? La manderemo via da noi; ma da chi?». 21 Perciò inviarono messaggeri agli abitanti di Kiriat-Iearìm con questa ambasciata: «I Filistei hanno ricondotto l'arca del Signore. Scendete e portatela presso di voi».

6 L'arca dell'Eterno rimase nel paese dei Filistei sette mesi.
2 Poi i Filistei convocarono i sacerdoti e gli indovini e dissero: «Che dobbiamo fare dell'arca dell'Eterno? Indicateci il modo con cui dobbiamo rimandarla al suo luogo».
3 Allora essi risposero: «Se rimandate l'arca del DIO d'Israele, non rimandatela vuota, ma dovete mandargli almeno un'offerta di riparazione; allora guarirete e saprete perché la sua mano non si allontanava da voi».
4 Essi chiesero: «Quale offerta di riparazione gli manderemo noi?». Quelli risposero: «Cinque emorroidi d'oro e cinque topi d'oro secondo il numero dei principi dei Filistei, perché la stessa piaga ha colpito voi e i vostri principi.
5 Fate dunque delle raffigurazioni delle vostre emorroidi e delle raffigurazioni dei vostri topi che devastano il paese, e date gloria al DIO d'Israele; forse egli allenterà la sua mano su di voi, sui vostri dei e sul vostro paese.
6 Perché mai indurite il vostro cuore come gli Egiziani e il Faraone indurirono il loro cuore? Quando compì cose potenti nel loro mezzo, non li lasciarono andare e così essi poterono partire?
7 Fate dunque un carro nuovo, poi prendete due vacche che allattino su cui non è mai stato posto il giogo e attaccate al carro le vacche, ma riportate i loro vitelli nella stalla lontano da esse.
8 Poi prendete l'arca dell'Eterno e ponetela sul carro; e deponete i lavori d'oro che mandate all'Eterno come offerta di riparazione in una cesta accanto ad essa; così la rimanderete, ed essa se ne andrà.
9 E state a vedere: se sale per la via che porta al suo territorio. verso Beth-Scemesh, è l'Eterno che ci ha fatto questo grande male; altrimenti sapremo che non è stata la sua mano a percuoterci ma che questo ci è avvenuto per caso».
10 Essi dunque fecero così; presero due vacche che allattavano le attaccarono al carro e chiusero nella stalla i loro vitelli.
11 Poi misero sul carro l'arca dell'Eterno e la cesta con i topi d'oro e le raffigurazioni delle emorroidi.
12 Allora le vacche si avviarono diritte proprio in direzione di Beth-Scemehs, seguendo sempre la stessa strada e muggendo mentre andavano, senza piegare né a destra né a sinistra. I principi dei Filistei li seguirono fino ai confini di Beth-Scemesh.
13 Ora gli abitanti di Beth-Scemesh stavano mietendo il grano nella valle; alzando gli occhi, videro l'arca e gioirono nel vederla.
14 Il carro, giunto al campo di Giosuè di Beth-Scemesh, vi si fermò. Là c'era una grande pietra; così essi spaccarono il legname del carro e offrirono le vacche in olocausto all'Eterno.
15 I Leviti tirarono giù l'arca dell'Eterno e la cesta che le stava accanto e in cui erano gli oggetti d'oro, e li de posero sulla grande pietra. In quello stesso giorno gli uomini di Beth-Scemesh offrirono olocausti e immolarono sacrifici all'Eterno.
16 Quando i cinque principi dei Filistei videro ciò, ritornarono lo stesso giorno a Ekron.
17 Queste sono le emorroidi d'oro che i Filistei mandarono all'Eterno come offerta di riparazione: una per Ashdod, una per Gaza, una per Askalon, una per Gath, una per Ekron;
18 e i topi d'oro secondo il numero di tutte le città dei Filistei appartenenti ai cinque principi, dalle città fortificate ai villaggi di campagna fino alla grande pietra del prato sulla quale fu deposta l'arca dell'Eterno, e che sta fino al giorno d'oggi nel campo di Giosuè, il Beth-scemita.
19 L'Eterno colpì alcuni uomini di Beth-Scemesh, perché avevano guardato dentro l'arca dell'Eterno; colpì settanta uomini del popolo. Il popolo fece cordoglio perché l'Eterno lo aveva colpito con una grande calamità.
20 Gli uomini di Beth-Scemesh dissero: «Chi può resistere davanti all'Eterno, a questo DIO santo? Da chi salirà l'arca partendo da noi?».
21 Così inviarono messaggeri agli abitanti di Kiriath-Jearim per dir loro: «I Filistei hanno ricondotto l'arca dell'Eterno; scendete e portatela su da voi».

6 Now the ark of the Lord was in the country of the Philistines seven months. 2 And the Philistines (A)called for the priests and the diviners, saying, “What shall we do with the ark of the Lord? Tell us how we should send it to its place.”
3 So they said, “If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it (B)empty; but by all means return it to Him with (C)a trespass offering. Then you will be healed, and it will be known to you why His hand is not removed from you.”
4 Then they said, “What is the trespass offering which we shall return to Him?”
They answered, (D)“Five golden tumors and five golden rats, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines. For the same plague was on all of [a]you and on your lords. 5 Therefore you shall make images of your tumors and images of your rats that (E)ravage the land, and you shall (F)give glory to the God of Israel; perhaps He will (G)lighten[b] His hand from you, from (H)your gods, and from your land. 6 Why then do you harden your hearts (I)as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When He did mighty things among them, (J)did they not let the people go, that they might depart? 7 Now therefore, make (K)a new cart, take two milk cows (L)which have never been yoked, and hitch the cows to the cart; and take their calves home, away from them. 8 Then take the ark of the Lord and set it on the cart; and put (M)the articles of gold which you are returning to Him as a trespass offering in a chest by its side. Then send it away, and let it go. 9 And watch: if it goes up the road to its own territory, to (N)Beth Shemesh, then He has done [c]us this great evil. But if not, then (O)we shall know that it is not His hand that struck us—it happened to us by chance.”
10 Then the men did so; they took two milk cows and hitched them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home. 11 And they set the ark of the Lord on the cart, and the chest with the gold rats and the images of their tumors. 12 Then the cows headed straight for the road to Beth Shemesh, and went along the (P)highway, lowing as they went, and did not turn aside to the right hand or the left. And the lords of the Philistines went after them to the border of Beth Shemesh.
13 Now the people of Beth Shemesh were reaping their (Q)wheat harvest in the valley; and they lifted their eyes and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it. 14 Then the cart came into the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, and stood there; a large stone was there. So they split the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the Lord. 15 The Levites took down the ark of the Lord and the chest that was with it, in which were the articles of gold, and put them on the large stone. Then the men of Beth Shemesh offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices the same day to the Lord. 16 So when (R)the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.
17 (S)These are the golden tumors which the Philistines returned as a trespass offering to the Lord: one for Ashdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for (T)Gath, one for Ekron; 18 and the golden rats, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both fortified cities and country villages, even as far as the large stone of Abel on which they set the ark of the Lord, which stone remains to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh.
19 Then (U)He struck the men of Beth Shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the Lord. [d]He (V)struck fifty thousand and seventy men of the people, and the people lamented because the Lord had struck the people with a great slaughter.
The Ark at Kirjath Jearim
20 And the men of Beth Shemesh said, (W)“Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? And to whom shall it go up from us?” 21 So they sent messengers to the inhabitants of (X)Kirjath Jearim, saying, “The Philistines have brought back the ark of the Lord; come down and take it up with you.”

7 Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them:
8 And take the ark of the Lord, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.
9 And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us: it was a chance that happened to us.
10 And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home:
11 And they laid the ark of the Lord upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods.
12 And the kine took the straight way to the way of Bethshemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Bethshemesh.
13 And they of Bethshemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.
14 And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Bethshemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered the kine a burnt offering unto the Lord.
15 And the Levites took down the ark of the Lord, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Bethshemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the Lord.

6 When the ark of the Lord had been in Philistine territory seven months, 2 the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners(A) and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the Lord? Tell us how we should send it back to its place.”
3 They answered, “If you return the ark of the god of Israel, do not send it back to him without a gift;(B) by all means send a guilt offering(C) to him. Then you will be healed, and you will know why his hand(D) has not been lifted from you.”
4 The Philistines asked, “What guilt offering should we send to him?”
They replied, “Five gold tumors and five gold rats, according to the number(E) of the Philistine rulers, because the same plague(F) has struck both you and your rulers. 5 Make models of the tumors(G) and of the rats that are destroying the country, and give glory(H) to Israel’s god. Perhaps he will lift his hand from you and your gods and your land. 6 Why do you harden(I) your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh did? When Israel’s god dealt harshly with them,(J) did they(K) not send the Israelites out so they could go on their way?
7 “Now then, get a new cart(L) ready, with two cows that have calved and have never been yoked.(M) Hitch the cows to the cart, but take their calves away and pen them up. 8 Take the ark of the Lord and put it on the cart, and in a chest beside it put the gold objects you are sending back to him as a guilt offering. Send it on its way, 9 but keep watching it. If it goes up to its own territory, toward Beth Shemesh,(N) then the Lord has brought this great disaster on us. But if it does not, then we will know that it was not his hand that struck us but that it happened to us by chance.”
10 So they did this. They took two such cows and hitched them to the cart and penned up their calves. 11 They placed the ark of the Lord on the cart and along with it the chest containing the gold rats and the models of the tumors. 12 Then the cows went straight up toward Beth Shemesh, keeping on the road and lowing all the way; they did not turn to the right or to the left. The rulers of the Philistines followed them as far as the border of Beth Shemesh.
13 Now the people of Beth Shemesh were harvesting their wheat(O) in the valley, and when they looked up and saw the ark, they rejoiced at the sight. 14 The cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, and there it stopped beside a large rock. The people chopped up the wood of the cart and sacrificed the cows as a burnt offering(P) to the Lord. 15 The Levites(Q) took down the ark of the Lord, together with the chest containing the gold objects, and placed them on the large rock.(R) On that day the people of Beth Shemesh(S) offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices to the Lord. 16 The five rulers of the Philistines saw all this and then returned that same day to Ekron.
17 These are the gold tumors the Philistines sent as a guilt offering to the Lord—one each(T) for Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron. 18 And the number of the gold rats was according to the number of Philistine towns belonging to the five rulers—the fortified towns with their country villages. The large rock on which the Levites set the ark of the Lord is a witness to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh.
19 But God struck down(U) some of the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh, putting seventy[a] of them to death because they looked(V) into the ark of the Lord. The people mourned because of the heavy blow the Lord had dealt them. 20 And the people of Beth Shemesh asked, “Who can stand(W) in the presence of the Lord, this holy(X) God? To whom will the ark go up from here?”
21 Then they sent messengers to the people of Kiriath Jearim,(Y) saying, “The Philistines have returned the ark of the Lord. Come down and take it up to your town.”
