Morte di Samuele; malvagità di Nabal e saggezza di Abigail
25 (A)Samuele morì e tutto Israele si radunò e ne fece cordoglio; lo seppellirono nella sua proprietà a Rama. Allora Davide partì, e scese verso il deserto di Paran.
2 A Maon c’era un uomo che aveva i suoi beni a Carmel[a]; era molto ricco, aveva tremila pecore e mille capre, e si trovava a Carmel per la tosatura delle sue pecore. 3 Quest’uomo si chiamava Nabal[b], e il nome di sua moglie era Abigail, donna di buon senso e di bell’aspetto; ma l’uomo si comportava con durezza e con malvagità; discendeva da Caleb.
4 Davide, avendo saputo nel deserto che Nabal tosava le sue pecore, 5 gli mandò dieci giovani, ai quali disse: «Salite a Carmel, andate da Nabal, salutatelo a nome mio 6 e dite così: “Salute! Pace a te, pace alla tua casa e pace a tutto quello che ti appartiene! 7 Ho saputo che hai i tosatori; ora, i tuoi pastori sono stati con noi e noi non abbiamo fatto loro nessuna offesa. Nulla è stato loro portato via per tutto il tempo che sono stati a Carmel. 8 Domandalo ai tuoi servi ed essi te lo confermeranno. Questi giovani trovino dunque grazia agli occhi tuoi, poiché siamo venuti in giorno di gioia; e da’, ti prego, ai tuoi servi e al tuo figlio Davide ciò che avrai fra le mani”».
9 Quando i giovani di Davide arrivarono, ripeterono a Nabal tutte queste parole in nome di Davide, poi tacquero. 10 Ma Nabal rispose ai servi di Davide e disse: «Chi è Davide? E chi è il figlio d’Isai? Sono molti, oggi, i servi che scappano dai loro padroni! 11 Io dovrei prendere il mio pane, la mia acqua e la carne che ho macellata per i miei tosatori, per darli a gente che non so da dove venga?»
12 I giovani ripresero la loro strada, tornarono e andarono a riferire a Davide tutte queste parole. 13 Allora Davide disse ai suoi uomini: «Ognuno di voi prenda la sua spada!» E ciascuno di essi prese la sua spada; anche Davide prese la sua, e salirono dietro a Davide circa quattrocento uomini; duecento rimasero presso i bagagli.
14 Abigail, moglie di Nabal, fu informata della cosa da uno dei suoi servi, che le disse: «Davide ha inviato dal deserto dei messaggeri per salutare il nostro padrone ed egli li ha trattati male. 15 Eppure, quella gente è stata molto buona verso di noi; noi non abbiamo ricevuto nessuna offesa e non ci hanno portato via nulla per tutto il tempo che siamo stati con loro, quando eravamo nei campi. 16 Di giorno e di notte sono stati per noi come una muraglia, per tutto il tempo che siamo stati con loro pascolando le greggi. 17 Ora dunque rifletti e vedi quel che tu debba fare; poiché un guaio certamente avverrà al nostro padrone e a tutta la sua casa; ed egli è un uomo così malvagio che non gli si può parlare».
18 Allora Abigail prese in fretta duecento pani, due otri di vino, cinque montoni pronti da cuocere, cinque misure[c] di grano arrostito, cento grappoli d’uva passa e duecento masse di fichi e caricò ogni cosa sugli asini. 19 Poi disse ai suoi servi: «Andate davanti a me; io vi seguirò». Ma non disse nulla a Nabal suo marito. 20 Lei dunque, in groppa al suo asino, scendeva il monte per un sentiero coperto, quando apparvero Davide e i suoi uomini che scendevano di fronte a lei, e li incontrò. 21 Or Davide aveva detto: «Ho dunque protetto invano tutto ciò che costui aveva nel deserto, in modo che nulla è mancato di quanto possiede; ed egli mi ha reso male per bene. 22 Così tratti Dio i nemici di Davide con il massimo rigore! Fra qui e lo spuntar del giorno, di tutto quello che gli appartiene non lascerò in vita un solo uomo».
23 Quando Abigail ebbe visto Davide scese in fretta dall’asino e, gettandosi con la faccia a terra, si prostrò davanti a lui. 24 Poi, gettandosi ai suoi piedi, disse: «Mio signore, la colpa è mia! Permetti che la tua serva parli in tua presenza e tu ascolta le parole della tua serva! 25 Ti prego, mio signore, non far caso a quell’uomo da nulla che è Nabal[d]; poiché egli è quel che dice il suo nome; si chiama Nabal e in lui non c’è che stoltezza; ma io, la tua serva, non vidi i giovani mandati dal mio signore. 26 Ora dunque, mio signore, com’è vero che vive il Signore e che anche tu vivi, il Signore ti ha impedito di spargere sangue e di farti giustizia con le tue proprie mani. I tuoi nemici e quelli che vogliono fare del male al mio signore siano come Nabal! 27 Adesso, ecco questo regalo che la tua serva porta al mio signore; sia dato ai giovani che seguono il mio signore. 28 Ti prego, perdona la colpa della tua serva, poiché per certo il Signore renderà stabile la tua casa, perché tu combatti le battaglie del Signore e in tutto il tempo della tua vita non si è trovata malvagità in te. 29 Se mai sorgesse qualcuno a perseguitarti e ad attentare alla tua vita, la vita del mio signore sarà custodita nello scrigno dei viventi presso il Signore, il tuo Dio; ma la vita dei tuoi nemici il Signore la lancerà via, come dall’incavo di una fionda. 30 Quando il Signore avrà fatto al mio signore tutto il bene che ti ha promesso e ti avrà stabilito come capo sopra Israele, 31 il mio signore non avrà questo dolore e questo rimorso di avere sparso del sangue senza motivo e di essersi fatto giustizia da sé. Quando il Signore avrà fatto del bene al mio signore, ricòrdati della tua serva».
32 Allora Davide disse ad Abigail: «Sia benedetto il Signore, il Dio d’Israele, che oggi ti ha mandata incontro a me! 33 Sia benedetto il tuo senno, e benedetta sia tu che oggi mi hai impedito di spargere del sangue e di farmi giustizia con le mie mani. 34 Poiché certo, com’è vero che vive il Signore, il Dio d’Israele, che mi ha impedito di farti del male, se tu non ti fossi affrettata a venirmi incontro, fra qui e lo spuntar del giorno a Nabal non sarebbe rimasto un solo uomo». 35 Davide quindi ricevette dalle mani di lei quello che gli aveva portato e le disse: «Risali in pace a casa tua; vedi, io ho dato ascolto alla tua voce e ho avuto riguardo per te».
36 (B)Abigail giunse da Nabal mentre egli faceva un banchetto in casa sua, un banchetto da re. Nabal aveva il cuore allegro, perché era completamente ubriaco; perciò lei non gli parlò di nulla, fino allo spuntar del giorno. 37 Ma la mattina, quando gli fu passata l’ubriachezza, la moglie raccontò a Nabal queste cose; allora gli si freddò il cuore ed egli rimase come di pietra. 38 Circa dieci giorni dopo il Signore colpì Nabal ed egli morì.
39 Quando Davide seppe che Nabal era morto, disse: «Sia benedetto il Signore, che mi ha reso giustizia dell’oltraggio fattomi da Nabal e ha preservato il suo servo dal fare del male! La malvagità di Nabal, il Signore l’ha fatta ricadere sul capo di lui!» Poi Davide mandò ad Abigail la proposta di diventare sua moglie. 40 I servi di Davide andarono da Abigail a Carmel e le parlarono così: «Davide ci ha mandati da te perché vuole prenderti in moglie». 41 Allora lei si alzò, si prostrò con la faccia a terra e disse: «Ecco, la tua serva farà da schiava, per lavare i piedi ai servi del mio signore». 42 Abigail si alzò in fretta, montò sopra un asino e, con cinque fanciulle, seguì i messaggeri di Davide e divenne sua moglie.
43 Davide sposò anche Ainoam di Izreel e tutt’e due furono sue mogli. 44 Intanto Saul aveva dato Mical sua figlia, moglie di Davide, a Palti, figlio di Lais, che era di Gallim.

25 Samuele morì, e tutto Israele si radunò e lo pianse. Lo seppellirono presso la sua casa in Rama. Davide si alzò e scese al deserto di Paran.
2 Vi era in Maon un uomo che possedeva beni a Carmel; costui era molto ricco, aveva un gregge di tremila pecore e mille capre e si trovava a Carmel per tosare il gregge. 3 Quest'uomo si chiamava Nabal e sua moglie Abigail. La donna era di buon senso e di bell'aspetto, ma il marito era brutale e cattivo; era un Calebita. 4 Davide nel deserto sentì che Nabal era alla tosatura del gregge. 5 Allora Davide inviò dieci giovani; Davide disse a questi giovani: «Salite a Carmel, andate da Nabal e chiedetegli a mio nome se sta bene. 6 Voi direte così a mio fratello: Pace a te e pace alla tua casa e pace a quanto ti appartiene! 7 Ho sentito appunto che stanno tosando le tue pecore. Ebbene, quando i tuoi pastori sono stati con noi, non li abbiamo molestati e niente delle loro cose ha subito danno finché sono stati a Carmel. 8 Interroga i tuoi uomini e ti informeranno. Questi giovani trovino grazia ai tuoi occhi, perché siamo giunti in un giorno lieto. Dà, ti prego, quanto puoi dare ai tuoi servi e al tuo figlio Davide». 9 Gli uomini di Davide andarono e fecero a Nabal tutto quel discorso a nome di Davide e attesero. 10 Ma Nabal rispose ai servi di Davide: «Chi è Davide e chi è il figlio di Iesse? Oggi sono troppi i servi che scappano dai loro padroni. 11 Devo prendere il pane, l'acqua e la carne che ho preparato per i tosatori e darli a gente che non so da dove venga?».
12 Gli uomini di Davide rifecero la strada, tornarono indietro e gli riferirono tutto questo discorso. 13 Allora Davide disse ai suoi uomini: «Cingete tutti la spada!». Tutti cinsero la spada e Davide cinse la sua e partirono dietro Davide circa quattrocento uomini. Duecento rimasero a guardia dei bagagli.
14 Ma Abigail, la moglie di Nabal, fu avvertita da uno dei servi, che le disse: «Ecco Davide ha inviato messaggeri dal deserto per salutare il nostro padrone, ma egli ha inveito contro di essi. 15 Veramente questi uomini sono stati molto buoni con noi; non ci hanno molestati e non ci è venuto a mancare niente finché siamo stati con loro, quando eravamo in campagna. 16 Sono stati per noi come un muro di difesa di notte e di giorno, finché siamo stati con loro a pascolare il gregge. 17 Sappilo dunque e vedi ciò che devi fare, perché pende qualche guaio sul nostro padrone e su tutta la sua casa. Egli poi è troppo cattivo e non gli si può dire una parola». 18 Abigail allora prese in fretta duecento pani, due otri di vino, cinque arieti preparati, cinque misure di grano tostato, cento grappoli di uva passa e duecento schiacciate di fichi secchi e li caricò sugli asini. 19 Poi disse ai servi: «Precedetemi, io vi seguirò». Ma non disse nulla al marito Nabal.
20 Ora, mentre essa sul dorso di un asino scendeva lungo un sentiero nascosto della montagna, Davide e i suoi uomini scendevano di fronte a lei ed essa s'incontrò con loro. 21 Davide andava dicendo: «Ho dunque custodito invano tutto ciò che appartiene a costui nel deserto; niente fu danneggiato di ciò che gli appartiene ed egli mi rende male per bene. 22 Tanto faccia Dio ai nemici di Davide e ancora peggio, se di tutti i suoi io lascerò sopravvivere fino al mattino un solo maschio!». 23 Appena Abigail vide Davide, smontò in fretta dall'asino, cadde con la faccia davanti a Davide e si prostrò a terra. 24 Cadde ai suoi piedi e disse: «Sono io colpevole, mio signore. Lascia che parli la tua schiava al tuo orecchio e tu dègnati di ascoltare le parole della tua schiava. 25 Non faccia caso il mio signore di quell'uomo cattivo che è Nabal, perché egli è come il suo nome: stolto si chiama e stoltezza è in lui; io tua schiava non avevo visto i tuoi giovani, o mio signore, che avevi mandato. 26 Ora, mio signore, per la vita del Signore e per la tua vita, poiché il Signore ti ha impedito di venire al sangue e farti giustizia con la tua mano, siano appunto come Nabal i tuoi nemici e coloro che cercano di fare il male al mio signore. 27 Quanto a questo dono che la tua schiava porta al mio signore, fà che sia dato agli uomini che seguono i tuoi passi, mio signore. 28 Perdona la colpa della tua schiava. Certo il Signore concederà a te, mio signore, una casa duratura, perché il mio signore combatte le battaglie del Signore, né si troverà alcun male in te per tutti i giorni della tua vita. 29 Se qualcuno insorgerà a perseguitarti e a cercare la tua vita, la tua anima, o mio signore, sarà conservata nello scrigno della vita presso il Signore tuo Dio, mentre l'anima dei tuoi nemici Egli la scaglierà come dal cavo della fionda. 30 Certo, quando il Signore ti avrà concesso tutto il bene che ha detto a tuo riguardo e ti avrà costituito capo d'Israele, 31 non sia di angoscia o di rimorso al tuo cuore questa cosa: l'aver versato invano il sangue e l'aver fatto giustizia con la tua mano, mio signore. Il Signore ti farà prosperare, mio signore, ma tu vorrai ricordarti della tua schiava». 32 Davide esclamò rivolto ad Abigail: «Benedetto il Signore, Dio d'Israele, che ti ha mandato oggi incontro a me. 33 Benedetto il tuo senno e benedetta tu che mi hai impedito oggi di venire al sangue e di fare giustizia da me. 34 Viva sempre il Signore, Dio d'Israele, che mi ha impedito di farti il male; perché se non fossi venuta in fretta incontro a me, non sarebbe rimasto a Nabal allo spuntar del giorno un solo maschio». 35 Davide prese poi dalle mani di lei quanto gli aveva portato e le disse: «Torna a casa in pace. Vedi: ho ascoltato la tua voce e ho rasserenato il tuo volto».
36 Abigail tornò da Nabal: questi teneva in casa un banchetto come un banchetto da re. Il suo cuore era allegro ed egli era ubriaco fradicio. Essa non gli disse né tanto né poco fino allo spuntar del giorno. 37 Il mattino dopo, quando Nabal ebbe smaltito il vino, la moglie gli narrò la faccenda; il cuore gli si tramortì nel petto ed egli rimase come una pietra. 38 Dieci giorni dopo il Signore colpì Nabal ed egli morì. 39 Quando Davide sentì che Nabal era morto, esclamò: «Benedetto il Signore che ha fatto giustizia dell'ingiuria che ho ricevuto da Nabal; ha trattenuto il suo servo dal male e ha rivolto sul capo di Nabal la sua iniquità». Poi Davide mandò messaggeri e annunziò ad Abigail che voleva prenderla in moglie. 40 I servi di Davide andarono a Carmel e le dissero: «Davide ci ha mandati a prenderti perché tu sia sua moglie». 41 Essa si alzò, si prostrò con la faccia a terra e disse: «Ecco, la tua schiava sarà come una schiava per lavare i piedi ai servi del mio signore». 42 Abigail si preparò in fretta poi salì su un asino e, seguita dalle sue cinque giovani ancelle, tenne dietro ai messaggeri di Davide e divenne sua moglie. 43 Davide aveva preso anche Achinoàm da Izreèl e furono tutte e due sue mogli. 44 Saul aveva dato Mikal sua figlia, gia moglie di Davide, a Palti figlio di Lais, che abitava in Gallìm.

David, Nabal and Abigail
25 Now Samuel died,(A) and all Israel assembled and mourned(B) for him; and they buried him at his home in Ramah.(C) Then David moved down into the Desert of Paran.[a]
2 A certain man in Maon,(D) who had property there at Carmel, was very wealthy.(E) He had a thousand goats and three thousand sheep, which he was shearing(F) in Carmel. 3 His name was Nabal and his wife’s name was Abigail.(G) She was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her husband was surly and mean in his dealings—he was a Calebite.(H)
4 While David was in the wilderness, he heard that Nabal was shearing sheep. 5 So he sent ten young men and said to them, “Go up to Nabal at Carmel and greet him in my name. 6 Say to him: ‘Long life to you! Good health(I) to you and your household! And good health to all that is yours!(J)
7 “‘Now I hear that it is sheep-shearing time. When your shepherds were with us, we did not mistreat(K) them, and the whole time they were at Carmel nothing of theirs was missing. 8 Ask your own servants and they will tell you. Therefore be favorable toward my men, since we come at a festive time. Please give your servants and your son David whatever(L) you can find for them.’”
9 When David’s men arrived, they gave Nabal this message in David’s name. Then they waited.
10 Nabal answered David’s servants, “Who(M) is this David? Who is this son of Jesse? Many servants are breaking away from their masters these days. 11 Why should I take my bread(N) and water, and the meat I have slaughtered for my shearers, and give it to men coming from who knows where?”
12 David’s men turned around and went back. When they arrived, they reported every word. 13 David said to his men(O), “Each of you strap on your sword!” So they did, and David strapped his on as well. About four hundred men went(P) up with David, while two hundred stayed with the supplies.(Q)
14 One of the servants told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, “David sent messengers from the wilderness to give our master his greetings,(R) but he hurled insults at them. 15 Yet these men were very good to us. They did not mistreat(S) us, and the whole time we were out in the fields near them nothing was missing.(T) 16 Night and day they were a wall(U) around us the whole time we were herding our sheep near them. 17 Now think it over and see what you can do, because disaster is hanging over our master and his whole household. He is such a wicked(V) man that no one can talk to him.”
18 Abigail acted quickly. She took two hundred loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five dressed sheep, five seahs[b] of roasted grain,(W) a hundred cakes of raisins(X) and two hundred cakes of pressed figs, and loaded them on donkeys.(Y) 19 Then she told her servants, “Go on ahead;(Z) I’ll follow you.” But she did not tell(AA) her husband Nabal.
20 As she came riding her donkey into a mountain ravine, there were David and his men descending toward her, and she met them. 21 David had just said, “It’s been useless—all my watching over this fellow’s property in the wilderness so that nothing of his was missing.(AB) He has paid(AC) me back evil(AD) for good. 22 May God deal with David,[c] be it ever so severely,(AE) if by morning I leave alive one male(AF) of all who belong to him!”
23 When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off her donkey and bowed down before David with her face to the ground.(AG) 24 She fell at his feet and said: “Pardon your servant, my lord,(AH) and let me speak to you; hear what your servant has to say. 25 Please pay no attention, my lord, to that wicked man Nabal. He is just like his name—his name means Fool(AI),(AJ) and folly goes with him. And as for me, your servant, I did not see the men my lord sent. 26 And now, my lord, as surely as the Lord your God lives and as you live, since the Lord has kept you from bloodshed(AK) and from avenging(AL) yourself with your own hands, may your enemies and all who are intent on harming my lord be like Nabal.(AM) 27 And let this gift,(AN) which your servant has brought to my lord, be given to the men who follow you.
28 “Please forgive(AO) your servant’s presumption. The Lord your God will certainly make a lasting(AP) dynasty for my lord, because you fight the Lord’s battles,(AQ) and no wrongdoing(AR) will be found in you as long as you live. 29 Even though someone is pursuing you to take your life,(AS) the life of my lord will be bound securely in the bundle of the living by the Lord your God, but the lives of your enemies he will hurl(AT) away as from the pocket of a sling.(AU) 30 When the Lord has fulfilled for my lord every good thing he promised concerning him and has appointed him ruler(AV) over Israel, 31 my lord will not have on his conscience the staggering burden of needless bloodshed or of having avenged himself. And when the Lord your God has brought my lord success, remember(AW) your servant.”(AX)
32 David said to Abigail, “Praise(AY) be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you today to meet me. 33 May you be blessed for your good judgment and for keeping me from bloodshed(AZ) this day and from avenging myself with my own hands. 34 Otherwise, as surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, who has kept me from harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, not one male belonging to Nabal(BA) would have been left alive by daybreak.”
35 Then David accepted from her hand what she had brought him and said, “Go home in peace. I have heard your words and granted(BB) your request.”
36 When Abigail went to Nabal, he was in the house holding a banquet like that of a king. He was in high(BC) spirits and very drunk.(BD) So she told(BE) him nothing at all until daybreak. 37 Then in the morning, when Nabal was sober, his wife told him all these things, and his heart failed him and he became like a stone.(BF) 38 About ten days later, the Lord struck(BG) Nabal and he died.
39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Praise be to the Lord, who has upheld my cause against Nabal for treating me with contempt. He has kept his servant from doing wrong and has brought Nabal’s wrongdoing down on his own head.”
Then David sent word to Abigail, asking her to become his wife. 40 His servants went to Carmel and said to Abigail, “David has sent us to you to take you to become his wife.”
41 She bowed down with her face to the ground and said, “I am your servant and am ready to serve you and wash the feet of my lord’s servants.” 42 Abigail(BH) quickly got on a donkey and, attended by her five female servants, went with David’s messengers and became his wife. 43 David had also married Ahinoam(BI) of Jezreel, and they both were his wives.(BJ) 44 But Saul had given his daughter Michal, David’s wife, to Paltiel[d](BK) son of Laish, who was from Gallim.(BL)

25 And Samuel died; and all the Israelites were gathered together, and lamented him, and buried him in his house at Ramah. And David arose, and went down to the wilderness of Paran.
2 And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.
3 Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb.
4 And David heard in the wilderness that Nabal did shear his sheep.
5 And David sent out ten young men, and David said unto the young men, Get you up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name:
6 And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast.
7 And now I have heard that thou hast shearers: now thy shepherds which were with us, we hurt them not, neither was there ought missing unto them, all the while they were in Carmel.
8 Ask thy young men, and they will shew thee. Wherefore let the young men find favour in thine eyes: for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thine hand unto thy servants, and to thy son David.
9 And when David's young men came, they spake to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, and ceased.
10 And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master.
11 Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, whom I know not whence they be?
12 So David's young men turned their way, and went again, and came and told him all those sayings.
13 And David said unto his men, Gird ye on every man his sword. And they girded on every man his sword; and David also girded on his sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men; and two hundred abode by the stuff.
14 But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our master; and he railed on them.
15 But the men were very good unto us, and we were not hurt, neither missed we any thing, as long as we were conversant with them, when we were in the fields:
16 They were a wall unto us both by night and day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.
17 Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.
18 Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched corn, and an hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses.
19 And she said unto her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal.
20 And it was so, as she rode on the ass, that she came down by the covert on the hill, and, behold, David and his men came down against her; and she met them.
21 Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained unto him: and he hath requited me evil for good.
22 So and more also do God unto the enemies of David, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.
23 And when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and lighted off the ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground,
24 And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be: and let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine audience, and hear the words of thine handmaid.
25 Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou didst send.
26 Now therefore, my lord, as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the Lord hath withholden thee from coming to shed blood, and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.
27 And now this blessing which thine handmaid hath brought unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my lord.
28 I pray thee, forgive the trespass of thine handmaid: for the Lord will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fighteth the battles of the Lord, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.
29 Yet a man is risen to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul: but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the Lord thy God; and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he sling out, as out of the middle of a sling.
30 And it shall come to pass, when the Lord shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee ruler over Israel;
31 That this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that my lord hath avenged himself: but when the Lord shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thine handmaid.
32 And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me:
33 And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand.
34 For in very deed, as the Lord God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.
35 So David received of her hand that which she had brought him, and said unto her, Go up in peace to thine house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy person.
36 And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.
37 But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.
38 And it came to pass about ten days after, that the Lord smote Nabal, that he died.
39 And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the Lord, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the Lord hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife.
40 And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David sent us unto thee, to take thee to him to wife.
41 And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thine handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.
42 And Abigail hasted, and arose and rode upon an ass, with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.
43 David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they were also both of them his wives.
44 But Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Phalti the son of Laish, which was of Gallim.
