Samuel Anoints Saul

9 There was a Benjamite,(A) a man of standing,(B) whose name was Kish(C) son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bekorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin. 2 Kish had a son named Saul, as handsome(D) a young man as could be found(E) anywhere in Israel, and he was a head taller(F) than anyone else.

3 Now the donkeys(G) belonging to Saul’s father Kish were lost, and Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants with you and go and look for the donkeys.” 4 So he passed through the hill(H) country of Ephraim and through the area around Shalisha,(I) but they did not find them. They went on into the district of Shaalim, but the donkeys(J) were not there. Then he passed through the territory of Benjamin, but they did not find them.

5 When they reached the district of Zuph,(K) Saul said to the servant who was with him, “Come, let’s go back, or my father will stop thinking about the donkeys and start worrying(L) about us.”

6 But the servant replied, “Look, in this town there is a man of God;(M) he is highly respected, and everything(N) he says comes true. Let’s go there now. Perhaps he will tell us what way to take.”

7 Saul said to his servant, “If we go, what can we give the man? The food in our sacks is gone. We have no gift(O) to take to the man of God. What do we have?”

8 The servant answered him again. “Look,” he said, “I have a quarter of a shekel[a] of silver. I will give it to the man of God so that he will tell us what way to take.” 9 (Formerly in Israel, if someone went to inquire(P) of God, they would say, “Come, let us go to the seer,” because the prophet of today used to be called a seer.)(Q)

10 “Good,” Saul said to his servant. “Come, let’s go.” So they set out for the town where the man of God was.

11 As they were going up the hill to the town, they met some young women coming out to draw(R) water, and they asked them, “Is the seer here?”

12 “He is,” they answered. “He’s ahead of you. Hurry now; he has just come to our town today, for the people have a sacrifice(S) at the high place.(T) 13 As soon as you enter the town, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not begin eating until he comes, because he must bless(U) the sacrifice; afterward, those who are invited will eat. Go up now; you should find him about this time.”

14 They went up to the town, and as they were entering it, there was Samuel, coming toward them on his way up to the high place.

15 Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed this to Samuel: 16 “About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint(V) him ruler(W) over my people Israel; he will deliver(X) them from the hand of the Philistines.(Y) I have looked on my people, for their cry(Z) has reached me.”

17 When Samuel caught sight of Saul, the Lord said to him, “This(AA) is the man I spoke to you about; he will govern my people.”

18 Saul approached Samuel in the gateway and asked, “Would you please tell me where the seer’s house is?”

19 “I am the seer,” Samuel replied. “Go up ahead of me to the high place, for today you are to eat with me, and in the morning I will send you on your way and will tell you all that is in your heart. 20 As for the donkeys(AB) you lost three days ago, do not worry about them; they have been found. And to whom is all the desire(AC) of Israel turned, if not to you and your whole family line?”

21 Saul answered, “But am I not a Benjamite, from the smallest tribe(AD) of Israel, and is not my clan the least(AE) of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin?(AF) Why do you say such a thing to me?”

22 Then Samuel brought Saul and his servant into the hall and seated them at the head of those who were invited—about thirty in number. 23 Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the piece of meat I gave you, the one I told you to lay aside.”

24 So the cook took up the thigh(AG) with what was on it and set it in front of Saul. Samuel said, “Here is what has been kept for you. Eat, because it was set aside for you for this occasion from the time I said, ‘I have invited guests.’” And Saul dined with Samuel that day.

25 After they came down from the high place to the town, Samuel talked with Saul on the roof(AH) of his house. 26 They rose about daybreak, and Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get ready, and I will send you on your way.” When Saul got ready, he and Samuel went outside together. 27 As they were going down to the edge of the town, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us”—and the servant did so—“but you stay here for a while, so that I may give you a message from God.”

9 Now there was a man of Benjamin whose name was (A)Kish the son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, son of a Benjaminite, a [a]valiant mighty man. 2 He had a son whose name was Saul, a (B)young and handsome man, and there was not a more handsome man than he among the sons of Israel; (C)from his shoulders and up he was taller than any of the people.

3 Now the donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, had wandered off. So Kish said to his son Saul, “Now take with you one of the servants and arise, go search for the donkeys.” 4 So he passed through (D)the hill country of Ephraim and passed through the land of (E)Shalishah, but they did not find them. Then they passed through the land of (F)Shaalim, but they were not there. Then he passed through the land of the Benjaminites, but they did not find them.

5 When they came to the land of (G)Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come, and let’s return, (H)or else my father will stop being concerned about the donkeys and will become anxious about us.” 6 But he said to him, “Behold now, there is (I)a man of God in this city, and the man is held in honor; (J)everything that he says definitely comes true. Now let’s go there, (K)perhaps he can tell us about our journey on which we have set out.” 7 Then Saul said to his servant, “But look, if we go, what shall we bring the man? For the bread is gone from our sacks and there is (L)no gift to bring to the man of God. What do we have?” 8 The servant answered Saul again and said, “Look, I have in my hand a fourth of a shekel of silver; I will give it to the man of God and he will (M)tell us our way.” 9 (Previously in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he used to say, “Come, and let’s go to the seer”; for he who is called a prophet now was previously called (N)a seer.) 10 Then Saul said to his servant, “[b]Good idea; come, let’s go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.

11 As they went up the slope to the city, (O)they found young women going out to draw water, and they said to them, “Is the seer here?” 12 They answered them and said, “He is; [c]see, he is ahead of you. Hurry now, for he has come into the city today, because (P)the people have a sacrifice on (Q)the high place today. 13 As soon as you enter the city you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat, for the people will not eat until he comes, because (R)he must bless the sacrifice; afterward those who are invited will eat. Now then, go up, for you will find him about this time.” 14 So they went up to the city. As they came into the city, behold, Samuel was coming out toward them to go up to the high place.

God’s Choice for King

15 Now a day before Saul’s coming, (S)the Lord had [d]revealed this to Samuel, saying, 16 “About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and (T)you shall anoint him as ruler over My people Israel; and he will save My people from the hand of the Philistines. For (U)I have considered My people, because their outcry has come to Me.” 17 When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord [e]said to him, “(V)Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! This one shall rule over My people.” 18 Then Saul approached Samuel at the gateway and said, “Please tell me where the seer’s house is.” 19 And Samuel answered Saul and said, “I am the seer. Go up ahead of me to the high place, for you shall eat with me today; and in the morning I will let you go, and will tell you everything that is on your mind. 20 (W)And as for your donkeys that wandered off three days ago, do not be concerned about them, for they have been found. And (X)for whom is everything that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for you and for all your father’s household?” 21 Saul replied, “(Y)Am I not a Benjaminite, of (Z)the smallest of the tribes of Israel, and my family the least of all the families of the [f]tribe of Benjamin? Why then have you spoken to me in this way?”

22 Then Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the hall, and gave them a place at the head of those who were invited, who were about thirty men. 23 And Samuel said to the cook, “[g]Serve the portion that I gave you about which I said to you, ‘Set it [h]aside.’” 24 Then the cook (AA)took up the leg with what was on it and placed it before Saul. And Samuel said, “Here is what has been reserved! Place it before you and eat, because it has been kept for you until the appointed time, [i]since I said I have invited the people.” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.

25 When they came down from the high place into the city, [j]Samuel spoke with Saul (AB)on the roof. 26 And they got up early; and at daybreak Samuel called to Saul on the roof, saying, “Get up, so that I may send you on your way.” So Saul got up, and both he and Samuel went out into the street. 27 As they were going down to the edge of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Speak to the servant and have him go on ahead of us and pass by; but you stand here now, so that I may proclaim the word of God to you.”

9 Era un om din Beniamin, numit Chis(A), fiul lui Abiel, fiul lui Ţeror, fiul lui Becorat, fiul lui Afiah, fiul unui beniamit, un om tare şi voinic. 2 El avea un fiu cu numele Saul, tânăr şi frumos, mai frumos decât oricare din copiii lui Israel. Haidem la el dar; poate că ne va arăta drumul pe care trebuie să apucăm.” 7 Saul a zis slugii sale: „Dar dacă mergem acolo, ce să(F) aducem omului lui Dumnezeu? Căci nu mai avem merinde în saci şi n-avem niciun dar de adus omului lui Dumnezeu. Ce avem?” 8 Sluga a luat din nou cuvântul şi a zis lui Saul: „Uite, eu am la mine un sfert de siclu de argint; îl voi da omului lui Dumnezeu şi ne va arăta drumul.” 9 Odinioară, în Israel, când se ducea cineva să întrebe(G) pe Dumnezeu, zicea: „Haidem să mergem la văzător!” Căci acela care se numeşte azi proroc se numea odinioară văzător(H). 10 Saul a zis slugii: „Ai dreptate; haidem să mergem!” Şi s-au dus în cetatea unde era omul lui Dumnezeu. 11 Pe când se suiau ei spre cetate, au întâlnit nişte fete(I) care ieşiseră să scoată apă şi le-au zis: „Aici este văzătorul?” 12 Ele le-au răspuns: „Da, iată-l înaintea ta, dar du-te repede, astăzi(J) a venit în cetate, pentru că poporul aduce jertfă(K) pe înălţime. 13 Când veţi intra în cetate, îl veţi găsi înainte ca să se suie la locul înalt să mănânce, căci poporul nu mănâncă până nu vine el, fiindcă el trebuie să binecuvânteze jertfa; după aceea, mănâncă şi cei poftiţi. Suiţi-vă dar, căci acum îl veţi găsi.” 14 Şi s-au suit în cetate. Tocmai când intrau pe poarta cetăţii, au fost întâlniţi de Samuel, care ieşea să se suie pe înălţime. 15 Dar, cu o zi mai înainte de venirea lui Saul, Domnul(L) înştiinţase pe Samuel şi-i zisese: 16 „Mâine, la ceasul acesta, îţi voi trimite un om din ţara lui Beniamin şi să-l ungi(M) drept căpetenie a poporului Meu Israel. El va scăpa poporul Meu din mâna filistenilor, căci am căutat(N) cu îndurare spre poporul Meu, pentru că strigătul lui a ajuns până la Mine.” 17 Când a zărit Samuel pe Saul, Domnul i-a zis: „Iată(O) omul despre care ţi-am vorbit; el va domni peste poporul Meu.” 18 Saul s-a apropiat de Samuel la mijlocul porţii şi a zis: „Arată-mi, te rog, unde este casa văzătorului.” 19 Samuel a răspuns lui Saul: „Eu sunt văzătorul. Suie-te înaintea mea pe înălţime, şi veţi mânca astăzi cu mine. Mâine te voi lăsa să pleci şi-ţi voi spune tot ce se petrece în inima ta. 20 Nu te nelinişti de măgăriţele(P) pe care le-ai pierdut acum trei zile, căci s-au găsit. Şi pentru cine este păstrat(Q) tot ce este mai de preţ în Israel? Oare nu pentru tine şi pentru toată casa tatălui tău?” 21 Saul a răspuns: „Oare nu sunt eu beniamit(R), din una din cele mai mici(S) seminţii ale lui Israel? Şi familia(T) mea nu este cea mai mică dintre toate familiile din seminţia lui Beniamin? Pentru ce dar îmi vorbeşti astfel?” 22 Samuel a luat pe Saul şi pe sluga lui, i-a vârât în odaia de mâncare, le-a dat locul cel dintâi între cei poftiţi, care erau aproape treizeci de inşi. 23 Samuel a zis bucătarului: „Adu porţia pe care ţi-am dat-o când ţi-am zis: ‘Pune-o deoparte’.” 24 Bucătarul a dat spata(U) şi ce era pe ea şi a pus-o înaintea lui Saul. Şi Samuel a zis: „Iată ce a fost păstrat, pune-o înainte şi mănâncă, fiindcă pentru tine s-a păstrat când am poftit poporul.” Astfel, Saul a mâncat cu Samuel în ziua aceea. 25 S-au pogorât apoi de pe înălţime în cetate, şi Samuel a stat de vorbă cu Saul pe acoperişul(V) casei. 26 Apoi s-au sculat dis-de-dimineaţă, şi, în revărsatul zorilor, Samuel a chemat pe Saul de pe acoperiş şi a zis: „Scoală-te, şi te voi însoţi”. Saul s-a sculat şi au ieşit amândoi, el şi Samuel. 27 Când s-au pogorât la marginea cetăţii, Samuel a zis lui Saul: „Spune slugii tale să treacă înaintea noastră”. Şi sluga a trecut înainte. „Opreşte-te acum”, a zis iarăşi Samuel, „şi-ţi voi face cunoscut cuvântul lui Dumnezeu”.

Saul Looks for His Father’s Donkeys

9 Kish was an important man from the tribe of Benjamin. He was the son of Abiel. Abiel was the son of Zeror. Zeror was the son of Becorath. Becorath was the son of Aphiah, a man from Benjamin. 2 Kish had a son named Saul, who was a handsome young man. There was no one more handsome than Saul. He stood a head taller than any other man in Israel.

3 One day Kish’s donkeys got lost. So he said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants and go look for the donkeys.” 4 Saul went to look for the donkeys. He walked through the hills of Ephraim and through the area around Shalisha. But Saul and the servant could not find Kish’s donkeys. So they went to the area around Shaalim, but the donkeys were not there either. Then Saul traveled through the land of Benjamin, but he and the servant still could not find the donkeys.

5 Finally, Saul and the servant came to the town named Zuph. Saul said to his servant, “Let’s go back. My father will stop worrying about the donkeys and start worrying about us.”

6 But the servant answered, “A man of God is in this town. People respect him. Everything he says comes true, so let’s go into town. Maybe the man of God will tell us where we should go next.”

7 Saul said to his servant, “Sure, we can go into town, but what can we give to him? We have no gift to give the man of God. Even the food in our bags is gone. What can we give him?”

8 Again the servant answered Saul. “Look, I have a little bit of money.[a] Let’s give it to the man of God. Then he will tell us where we should go.”

9-11 Saul said to his servant, “That is a good idea. Let’s go.” So they went to the town where the man of God was.

Saul and the servant were walking up the hill toward town when they met some young women on the road. The young women were coming out to get water. Saul and the servant asked the young women, “Is the seer here?” (In the past, people in Israel called a prophet a “seer.” So if they wanted to ask something from God, they would say, “Let’s go to the seer.”)

12 The young women answered, “Yes, the seer is here. He is just up the road. He came to town today. Some people are meeting together today to share in a fellowship offering at the place for worship.[b] 13 So go into town and you will find him. If you hurry, you can catch him before he goes up to eat at the place for worship. The seer blesses the sacrifice, so the people won’t begin eating until he gets there. If you hurry, you can find him.”

14 Saul and the servant started walking up the hill to town. Just as they came into town, they saw Samuel coming out of town, walking toward them. He was on his way to the place for worship.

15 The day before, the Lord had told Samuel, 16 “At this time tomorrow I will send a man to you. He will be from the tribe of Benjamin. You must anoint him and make him the new leader over my people Israel. This man will save my people from the Philistines. I have seen my people suffering,[c] and I have heard their cries for help.”

17 When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said to Samuel, “This is the man I told you about. He will rule my people.”

18 Saul went up to a man near the gate to ask directions. This man just happened to be Samuel. Saul said, “Excuse me. Could you tell me where the seer’s house is?”

19 Samuel answered, “I am the seer. Go on up ahead of me to the place for worship. You and your servant will eat with me today. I will let you go home tomorrow morning. I will answer all your questions. 20 And don’t worry about the donkeys that you lost three days ago. They have been found. Now, there is something that everyone in Israel is looking for and that something is you and your family.”

21 Saul answered, “But I am a member of the tribe of Benjamin. It is the smallest tribe in Israel. And my family is the smallest in the tribe of Benjamin. Why do you say Israel wants me?”

22 Then Samuel took Saul and his servant to the eating area. About 30 people had been invited to eat together and share the sacrifice. Samuel gave Saul and his servant the most important place at the table. 23 Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the meat I gave you. It is the share I told you to save.”

24 The cook brought out the thigh[d] and put it on the table in front of Saul. Samuel said, “Eat the meat that was put in front of you. It was saved for you for this special time when I called the people together.” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.

25 After they finished eating, they came down from the place for worship and went back to town. Samuel made a bed for Saul on the roof, 26 and Saul went to sleep.[e]

Early the next morning, Samuel shouted to Saul on the roof and said, “Get up. I will send you on your way.” Saul got up and went out of the house with Samuel.

27 Saul, his servant, and Samuel were walking together near the edge of town. Samuel said to Saul, “Tell your servant to go on ahead of us. I have a message for you from God.” So the servant walked ahead of them.
