El regreso del Arca
6 El Arca del Señor permaneció siete meses en territorio filisteo. 2 Los filisteos hicieron llamar a los sacerdotes y adivinos para consultarles:
— ¿Qué podemos hacer con el Arca del Señor? Indíquennos cómo debemos enviarla a su lugar.
3 Ellos respondieron:
— Si quieren devolver el Arca del Dios de Israel, no la manden vacía; devuélvanla con una compensación. Entonces se curarán y sabrán por qué su castigo no los dejaba en paz.
4 Y preguntaron:
— ¿Qué compensación debemos hacerle?
Contestaron:
— A razón del número de príncipes filisteos, cinco tumores de oro y cinco ratas de oro, pues una misma plaga han sufrido todos ustedes y sus príncipes. 5 Harán imágenes de los tumores y de las ratas que exterminan el país para glorificar al Dios de Israel. Tal vez así aplaque su castigo sobre ustedes, sus dioses y su país. 6 No sean tan obstinados como lo fueron los egipcios y el faraón que sólo cuando él los golpeó dejaron marchar a Israel. 7 Así, pues, construyan una carreta nueva, tomen dos vacas que estén criando y que nunca hayan llevado yugo, engánchenlas a la carreta y dejen sus terneros en el establo. 8 Tomen luego el Arca del Señor, colóquenla en la carreta junto con los objetos de oro que le ofrecen como reparación metidos en una bolsa, y déjenla marchar. 9 Observen entonces: si se encamina hacia su territorio y sube hacia Bet Semes, demostrará que él nos ha causado esta terrible plaga. Si no es así, sabremos que él no nos ha castigado y que ha sido un accidente.
10 Y así lo hicieron. Tomaron dos vacas que estaban criando, las engancharon a la carreta y encerraron a sus terneros en el establo. 11 Luego colocaron en la carreta el Arca del Señor y la bolsa con las ratas de oro y las imágenes de sus tumores. 12 Las vacas tiraron derechas en dirección a Bet Semes. Caminaban mugiendo siempre por el mismo camino, sin desviarse a ningún lado, y los príncipes filisteos las siguieron hasta el término de Bet Semes.
13 Las gentes de Bet Semes, que estaban cosechando el trigo en el valle, levantaron la vista y, al ver el Arca, se alegraron. 14 La carreta llegó al campo de Josué, el de Bet Semes, y se detuvo allí, junto a una piedra grande. Entonces partieron la madera de la carreta y ofrecieron las vacas en holocausto al Señor. 15 Los levitas habían bajado el Arca del Señor y la bolsa que contenía los objetos de oro, colocándolos sobre la piedra grande. Aquel día la gente de Bet Semes ofreció holocaustos y sacrificios de comunión al Señor. 16 Los cinco príncipes filisteos estuvieron observando y regresaron a Ecrón el mismo día.
17 Los cinco tumores de oro que los filisteos ofrecieron en compensación al Señor correspondían respectivamente a Asdod, Gaza, Ascalón, Gat y Ecrón. 18 El número de ratas de oro correspondía al total de las ciudades filisteas gobernadas por los cinco príncipes, incluyendo ciudades fortificadas y aldeas anejas. En cuanto a la piedra grande sobre la que colocaron el Arca del Señor, todavía hoy puede verse en el campo de Josué, el de Bet Semes.
19 Pero el Señor castigó a la gente de Bet Semes por mirar el Arca del Señor, hiriendo a setenta de sus hombres. El pueblo hizo duelo por el duro castigo que el Señor le había infligido. 20 Entonces los habitantes de Bet Semes dijeron:
— ¿Quién podrá resistir ante el Señor, ante este Dios Santo? ¿A quién enviarla para quitárnosla de encima?
21 Enviaron, pues, emisarios a los habitantes de Quiriat Jearín con este mensaje:
— Los filisteos han devuelto el Arca del Señor. Vengan y llévensela con ustedes.

The Ark Returned to Israel
6 Now the ark of the Lord was in the country of the Philistines seven months. 2 And the Philistines (A)called for the priests and the diviners, saying, “What shall we do with the ark of the Lord? Tell us how we should send it to its place.”
3 So they said, “If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it (B)empty; but by all means return it to Him with (C)a trespass offering. Then you will be healed, and it will be known to you why His hand is not removed from you.”
4 Then they said, “What is the trespass offering which we shall return to Him?”
They answered, (D)“Five golden tumors and five golden rats, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines. For the same plague was on all of [a]you and on your lords. 5 Therefore you shall make images of your tumors and images of your rats that (E)ravage the land, and you shall (F)give glory to the God of Israel; perhaps He will (G)lighten[b] His hand from you, from (H)your gods, and from your land. 6 Why then do you harden your hearts (I)as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When He did mighty things among them, (J)did they not let the people go, that they might depart? 7 Now therefore, make (K)a new cart, take two milk cows (L)which have never been yoked, and hitch the cows to the cart; and take their calves home, away from them. 8 Then take the ark of the Lord and set it on the cart; and put (M)the articles of gold which you are returning to Him as a trespass offering in a chest by its side. Then send it away, and let it go. 9 And watch: if it goes up the road to its own territory, to (N)Beth Shemesh, then He has done [c]us this great evil. But if not, then (O)we shall know that it is not His hand that struck us—it happened to us by chance.”
10 Then the men did so; they took two milk cows and hitched them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home. 11 And they set the ark of the Lord on the cart, and the chest with the gold rats and the images of their tumors. 12 Then the cows headed straight for the road to Beth Shemesh, and went along the (P)highway, lowing as they went, and did not turn aside to the right hand or the left. And the lords of the Philistines went after them to the border of Beth Shemesh.
13 Now the people of Beth Shemesh were reaping their (Q)wheat harvest in the valley; and they lifted their eyes and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it. 14 Then the cart came into the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, and stood there; a large stone was there. So they split the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the Lord. 15 The Levites took down the ark of the Lord and the chest that was with it, in which were the articles of gold, and put them on the large stone. Then the men of Beth Shemesh offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices the same day to the Lord. 16 So when (R)the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.
17 (S)These are the golden tumors which the Philistines returned as a trespass offering to the Lord: one for Ashdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for (T)Gath, one for Ekron; 18 and the golden rats, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both fortified cities and country villages, even as far as the large stone of Abel on which they set the ark of the Lord, which stone remains to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh.
19 Then (U)He struck the men of Beth Shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the Lord. [d]He (V)struck fifty thousand and seventy men of the people, and the people lamented because the Lord had struck the people with a great slaughter.
The Ark at Kirjath Jearim
20 And the men of Beth Shemesh said, (W)“Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? And to whom shall it go up from us?” 21 So they sent messengers to the inhabitants of (X)Kirjath Jearim, saying, “The Philistines have brought back the ark of the Lord; come down and take it up with you.”

The Return of the Ark of God. 1 When the Ark of the Lord had been held in Philistine territory for seven months, 2 the Philistines summoned the priests and diviners and said, “What should we do with the Ark of the Lord? Tell us how to send it back home.”
3 They answered, “If you return the Ark of the God of Israel, do not send it away empty-handed. Rather, send a guilt offering to him. Then you will be healed, and you will understand why he continued to afflict you.”[a] 4 They then asked, “What sort of guilt offering should be made to him?” They answered, “Send five golden tumors and five golden mice, as many as the lords of the Philistines, for the plague was on you all, lords included. 5 You should make offerings in the likeness of tumors and in the likeness of the mice that have been ravaging the land, and give glory to the God of Israel. Perhaps he will ease up on you, your gods, and your land.
6 “Why would you harden your hearts, like the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When he dealt harshly with them, did they not let them go, and they went their way?
7 [b]“Prepare a cart drawn by two milk cows that have calves but have never been yoked. Hitch the cows to the cart, but take the calves away, leading them home. 8 Take the Ark of the Lord and place it upon the cart, and put the figures of gold that you are sending back as a guilt offering in a box at its side. Then send it off, and let it go its way. 9 Watch it, and if it goes up the road to its own land, to Beth-shemesh, then it is clear that he has brought this great woe upon us. But if it does not, then we shall know that it was not he who punished us, that it happened by chance.”
10 The Ark at Beth-shemesh. The men did this. They took two milk cows and tied them to a cart, shutting up their calves at home. 11 They then put the Ark of the Lord upon the cart along with the box containing the golden mice and the statues of the tumors. 12 The cows went straight up to Beth-shemesh, sticking to the road and lowing as they went along. They did not waver in their course to the right nor the left. The lords of the Philistines followed them as far as the border with Beth-shemesh.
13 Now the people of Beth-shemesh were harvesting their wheat in the valley when they looked up and saw the Ark. They rejoiced at what they saw. 14 The cart came into the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh, and it stopped there by a large rock. The people chopped up the wood from the cart and offered up the milk cows as a burnt offering to the Lord. 15 The Levites lowered the Ark down along with the box that contained the objects made of gold and placed them on the large rock. On that day the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and performed sacrifices to the Lord.
16 The five lords of the Philistines saw all of this and returned to Ekron that same day. 17 The golden tumors that the Philistines sent back as a guilt offering to the Lord were for Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron: one tumor for each city. 18 There were as many golden mice as there were cities under the rule of the five lords of the Philistines, both the fortified cities and the country villages. The large rock upon which they set the Ark of the Lord is in the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh to this day.
19 Punishment for Irreverence. He slew some of the men of Beth-shemesh because they had looked into the Ark of the Lord. He slew seventy of them.[c] The people raised up a lamentation because the Lord had struck the people with a great slaughter. 20 The men of Beth-shemesh said, “Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? To whom should we send it?” 21 They sent messengers to the people of Kiriath-jearim saying, “The Philistines have sent back the Ark of the Lord. Come down and fetch it for yourselves.”

- 1 Samuel 6:3 The Philistine priests and diviners responded to the Ark as they traditionally would in appeasing an angry god. Their guilt offering, however, was not in line with Levitical requirements.
- 1 Samuel 6:7 This passage depicts another Philistine ploy to determine if the god of the Israelites was responsible for bringing them harm. God had his own reasons for showing them his power over the milk cows.
- 1 Samuel 6:19 He slew seventy of them: here is another instance of God meting out the punishment he had promised for disobedience. God tried over and over again to bring back his people to his ways to avoid further retribution.
