Le retour du coffre de l’alliance en Israël
6 Pendant sept mois le coffre de l’Eternel fut dans le pays des Philistins. 2 Alors les Philistins convoquèrent leurs prêtres et leurs devins pour leur demander : Que ferons-nous du coffre de l’Eternel ? Faites-nous savoir de quelle manière nous devons procéder pour le renvoyer dans son pays !
3 – Si vous renvoyez le coffre du Dieu d’Israël, dirent-ils, ne le renvoyez pas à vide. Faites-le accompagner d’un présent pour expier votre faute ! Alors vous serez guéris et vous saurez pourquoi il n’a cessé de sévir contre vous.
4 – Mais quelle sorte de réparation devons-nous lui offrir ? demandèrent les gens.
Ils leur répondirent : Vous ferez cinq représentations en or[a] des tumeurs qui vous ont affligés et cinq rats en or selon le nombre des princes des Philistins, car le même fléau a atteint tout le monde – y compris vos princes. 5 Vous fabriquerez donc des effigies de vos tumeurs et des rats qui dévastent le pays, et vous les offrirez en hommage au Dieu d’Israël. Peut-être cessera-t-il de vous frapper sévèrement, vous, vos dieux et votre pays. 6 Ne vous obstinez pas comme les Egyptiens et le pharaon. Rappelez-vous qu’après avoir été malmenés par ce Dieu, ils ont dû laisser partir les Israélites. 7 Maintenant donc, fabriquez un chariot neuf et prenez deux vaches qui allaitent et qui n’ont pas encore porté le joug. Attelez-les au chariot et séparez-les de leurs petits que vous ramènerez à l’étable ! 8 Prenez le coffre de l’Eternel et placez-le sur le chariot ! Déposez dans un coffret que vous mettrez à côté de lui les objets d’or que vous offrez à Dieu pour réparer votre faute, ensuite vous laisserez partir l’attelage. 9 Vous le suivrez des yeux : si les vaches se dirigent vers la frontière du pays d’Israël du côté de Beth-Shémesh[b], cela veut dire que c’est leur Dieu qui nous a infligé tous ces grands malheurs ; sinon, nous conclurons que ce n’est pas lui qui nous a frappés ; mais que cela nous est arrivé par hasard.
10 Les Philistins suivirent ces instructions : ils prirent deux vaches qui allaitaient et les attelèrent au chariot, tout en enfermant leurs veaux dans l’étable. 11 Ils placèrent le coffre de l’Eternel sur le chariot, ainsi que le coffret contenant les rats en or et les représentations de tumeurs. 12 Les vaches prirent tout droit la direction de Beth-Shémesh, elles suivirent en meuglant toujours le même chemin, sans en dévier ni à droite ni à gauche ; les princes des Philistins marchèrent derrière elles jusqu’à la frontière, vers Beth-Shémesh.
13 Les habitants de Beth-Shémesh étaient en train de moissonner[c] les blés dans la vallée. Tout à coup, ils aperçurent le coffre et s’en réjouirent. 14 L’attelage arriva au champ de Josué de Beth-Shémesh[d] et s’arrêta là à côté d’une grande pierre. On fendit le bois du chariot et l’on offrit les vaches en holocaustes à l’Eternel. 15 Des lévites avaient enlevé du char le coffre de l’Eternel et le coffret contenant les objets d’or et ils les avaient déposés sur la grande pierre. Ce même jour, les habitants de Beth-Shémesh offrirent des holocaustes et d’autres sacrifices à l’Eternel[e]. 16 Quand les cinq princes des Philistins virent cela, ils retournèrent ce même jour à Eqrôn.
17 Les Philistins avaient donné à l’Eternel en offrande de réparation cinq objets d’or représentant leurs tumeurs, une pour chacune de leurs villes principales : Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelôn, Gath et Eqrôn. 18 Il y avait aussi des rats en or, selon le nombre des villes soumises aux cinq princes philistins, depuis les villes fortifiées jusqu’aux villages ouverts. La grande pierre[f] sur laquelle fut déposé le coffre de l’Eternel sert encore aujourd’hui de témoin dans le champ de Josué à Beth-Shémesh.
19 L’Eternel frappa soixante-dix habitants[g] de Beth-Shémesh parce qu’ils avaient regardé dans le coffre de l’Eternel. Le peuple prit le deuil à cause de ce grand fléau que l’Eternel leur avait infligé. 20 Les gens de Beth-Shémesh dirent : Qui pourrait subsister devant l’Eternel, ce Dieu saint ? Chez qui pourrions-nous envoyer le coffre sacré pour le faire partir de chez nous ?
21 Ils envoyèrent des messagers aux habitants de Qiryath-Yearim[h] pour leur dire : Les Philistins ont restitué le coffre de l’Eternel, venez donc le chercher pour l’emporter chez vous.

The Ark of God Is Sent Home
6 The Philistines kept the ·Ark of God [4:3] in their ·land [territory; country] seven months. 2 Then the Philistines [4:1] called for their priests and ·magicians [diviners] and said, “What should we do with the Ark of the Lord? Tell us how to send it back ·home [to its place]!”
3 They answered, “If you send back the Ark of the God of Israel, don’t send it back ·empty [without a gift]. ·You must give [Return it to him with] a ·penalty [guilt] offering. If you are then healed, you will know that it was ·because of the Ark that you had such trouble [L his hand that has been lifted from you].”
4 The Philistines asked, “What kind of ·penalty [guilt] offering should we send to ·Israel’s God [L him]?”
They answered, “Make five gold ·models [likenesses; images] of the ·growths on your skin [tumors] and five gold ·models [likenesses; images] of ·rats [or mice]. ·The number of ·models [likenesses; images] must match the number of Philistine ·kings [rulers; lords], because the same ·sickness [plague] has ·come on [struck; afflicted] you and your ·kings [rulers; lords]. 5 Make ·models [likenesses; images] of the ·growths [tumors] and the ·rats [or mice] that are ·ruining [destroying; ravaging] the ·country [land], and give ·honor [glory] to Israel’s God. Then maybe he will ·stop being so hard on [L lift his hand from] you, your gods, and your ·land [country]. 6 ·Don’t be stubborn [L Why do you harden your hearts…?] like the ·king [L Pharaoh] of Egypt and the Egyptians [Ex. 7:13; 8:15; 9:34]. After God ·punished them terribly [brought disaster on; or made fools of them], ·they let the Israelites leave Egypt [L did they not send the Israelites out, and they departed?].
7 “You must ·build [prepare] a new cart and get two cows that have just had calves. These must be cows that have never had yokes on their necks. Hitch the cows to the cart, and take the calves ·home, away from their mothers [away from them and put them in a pen]. 8 Put the Ark of the Lord [4:3] on the cart and the gold ·models [likenesses; objects] you are sending him for the ·penalty [guilt] offering in a ·box [chest] beside the Ark. Then send the cart ·straight on its way [to go its own way]. 9 Watch the cart. If it goes toward Beth Shemesh [C a town on the border with Philistia about 24 miles west of Jerusalem] in ·Israel’s own land [its own territory], [then] the Lord has ·given us this great sickness [brought this great disaster/harm on us]. But if it doesn’t, we will know that ·Israel’s God has not punished us [it was not God’s hand that struck us]. It just happened by chance.”
10 ·The Philistines did what the priests and magicians said [L The men did so]. They took two cows that had just had calves and hitched them to the cart, but they kept their calves ·at home [in a pen]. 11 They put the Ark of the Lord and the ·box [chest] with the gold rats and ·models [likenesses; images] of ·growths [tumors] on the cart. 12 Then the cows went straight toward Beth Shemesh. They stayed on the road, ·mooing [lowing] all the way, and did not turn right or left. The Philistine ·kings [rulers; lords] followed the cows as far as the border of Beth Shemesh.
13 Now the people of Beth Shemesh were ·harvesting [reaping] their wheat in the valley. When they ·looked up [L raised their eyes] and saw the Ark of the Lord, they were ·very happy [joyful to see it]. 14 The cart came to the field belonging to Joshua of Beth Shemesh and stopped near a large rock. The people of Beth Shemesh chopped up the wood of the cart. Then they ·sacrificed [offered] the cows as burnt offerings to the Lord. 15 The Levites took down the Ark of the Lord and the ·box [chest] that had the gold ·models [likenesses; images], and they put both on the large rock. That day the people of Beth Shemesh offered whole burnt offerings and made sacrifices to the Lord. 16 After the five Philistine ·kings [rulers; lords] saw this, they went back to Ekron [5:10] the same day.
17 The Philistines had sent these gold ·models [likenesses; images] of the ·growths [tumors] as ·penalty [guilt] offerings to the Lord. They sent one ·model [likeness; image] for each Philistine town: Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron [C the five chief cities of Philistia]. 18 And the Philistines also sent gold ·models [likenesses; images] of ·rats [or mice]. The number of ·rats [or mice] matched the number of towns belonging to the Philistine ·kings [rulers; lords], including both ·strong, walled [fortified] cities and country villages. The large rock on which they put the Ark of the Lord is still there [as a witness] in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh.
19 But some of the men of Beth Shemesh looked into the Ark of the Lord. So God killed seventy of them. The people of Beth Shemesh ·cried [mourned] because the Lord had struck them ·down [so heavily; with a great slaughter]. 20 ·They [L The men of Beth Shemesh] said, “Who can stand ·before [in the presence of] the Lord, this holy God? ·Whom will he strike next [or To whom shall he/it go next]?”
21 Then they sent messengers to the people of Kiriath Jearim [C a town nine miles north of Jerusalem], saying, “The Philistines have ·brought back [returned] the Ark of the Lord. Come down and take it to your city.”

The Ark Returned to Israel
6 When the ark of the Lord had been in Philistine territory seven months, 2 the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners(A) and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the Lord? Tell us how we should send it back to its place.”
3 They answered, “If you return the ark of the god of Israel, do not send it back to him without a gift;(B) by all means send a guilt offering(C) to him. Then you will be healed, and you will know why his hand(D) has not been lifted from you.”
4 The Philistines asked, “What guilt offering should we send to him?”
They replied, “Five gold tumors and five gold rats, according to the number(E) of the Philistine rulers, because the same plague(F) has struck both you and your rulers. 5 Make models of the tumors(G) and of the rats that are destroying the country, and give glory(H) to Israel’s god. Perhaps he will lift his hand from you and your gods and your land. 6 Why do you harden(I) your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh did? When Israel’s god dealt harshly with them,(J) did they(K) not send the Israelites out so they could go on their way?
7 “Now then, get a new cart(L) ready, with two cows that have calved and have never been yoked.(M) Hitch the cows to the cart, but take their calves away and pen them up. 8 Take the ark of the Lord and put it on the cart, and in a chest beside it put the gold objects you are sending back to him as a guilt offering. Send it on its way, 9 but keep watching it. If it goes up to its own territory, toward Beth Shemesh,(N) then the Lord has brought this great disaster on us. But if it does not, then we will know that it was not his hand that struck us but that it happened to us by chance.”
10 So they did this. They took two such cows and hitched them to the cart and penned up their calves. 11 They placed the ark of the Lord on the cart and along with it the chest containing the gold rats and the models of the tumors. 12 Then the cows went straight up toward Beth Shemesh, keeping on the road and lowing all the way; they did not turn to the right or to the left. The rulers of the Philistines followed them as far as the border of Beth Shemesh.
13 Now the people of Beth Shemesh were harvesting their wheat(O) in the valley, and when they looked up and saw the ark, they rejoiced at the sight. 14 The cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, and there it stopped beside a large rock. The people chopped up the wood of the cart and sacrificed the cows as a burnt offering(P) to the Lord. 15 The Levites(Q) took down the ark of the Lord, together with the chest containing the gold objects, and placed them on the large rock.(R) On that day the people of Beth Shemesh(S) offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices to the Lord. 16 The five rulers of the Philistines saw all this and then returned that same day to Ekron.
17 These are the gold tumors the Philistines sent as a guilt offering to the Lord—one each(T) for Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron. 18 And the number of the gold rats was according to the number of Philistine towns belonging to the five rulers—the fortified towns with their country villages. The large rock on which the Levites set the ark of the Lord is a witness to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh.
19 But God struck down(U) some of the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh, putting seventy[a] of them to death because they looked(V) into the ark of the Lord. The people mourned because of the heavy blow the Lord had dealt them. 20 And the people of Beth Shemesh asked, “Who can stand(W) in the presence of the Lord, this holy(X) God? To whom will the ark go up from here?”
21 Then they sent messengers to the people of Kiriath Jearim,(Y) saying, “The Philistines have returned the ark of the Lord. Come down and take it up to your town.”

2 At tinawag ng mga Filisteo ang mga saserdote at ang mga manghuhula, na sinasabi, Anong aming gagawin sa kaban ng Panginoon? Ipatalastas ninyo sa amin kung aming ipadadala sa kaniyang dako.
3 At kanilang sinabi, Kung inyong ipadadala ang kaban ng Dios ng Israel, ay huwag ninyong ipadalang walang laman; kundi sa ano pa man ay inyong ibalik siya na may handog ng dahil sa pagkakasala: kung magkagayo'y gagaling kayo, at malalaman ninyo kung bakit ang kaniyang kamay ay hindi humiwalay sa inyo.
4 Nang magkagayo'y kanilang sinabi, Ano ang handog dahil sa pagkakasala na aming igaganti sa kaniya? At kanilang sinabi, Limang gintong bukol, at limang gintong daga ayon sa bilang ng mga pangulo ng mga Filisteo; sapagka't iisang salot ang napasa inyong lahat, at napasa inyong mga pangulo.
5 Kaya't kayo'y gagawa ng mga larawan ng inyong mga bukol, at mga larawan ng inyong mga daga na sumira ng lupain, at inyong bibigyan ng kaluwalhatian ang Dios ng Israel: baka sakaling kaniyang gaanan ang kaniyang kamay sa inyo, at sa inyong mga dios, at sa inyong lupain.
6 Bakit nga ninyo pinapagmamatigas ang inyong puso, na gaya ng mga taga Egipto at ni Faraon na pinapagmatigas ang kanilang puso? Nang siya'y makagawa ng kahangahanga sa kanila, di ba nila pinayaon ang bayan, at sila'y yumaon?
7 Ngayon nga'y kumuha kayo at maghanda kayo ng isang bagong karo, at dalawang bagong bakang gatasan, na hindi napatungan ng pamatok; at ikabit ninyo ang mga baka sa karo, at iuwi ninyo ang kanilang mga guya.
8 At kunin ninyo ang kaban ng Panginoon, at isilid ninyo sa karo; at isilid ninyo sa isang kahang nasa tabi niyaon ang mga hiyas na ginto na inyong ibabalik sa kaniya na pinakahandog dahil sa pagkakasala; at inyong ipadala upang yumaon.
9 At tingnan ninyo; kung umahon sa daan ng kaniyang sariling hangganan sa Beth-semes, ginawa nga niya sa atin ang malaking kasamaang ito: nguni't kung hindi, malalaman nga natin na hindi kaniyang kamay ang nanakit sa atin; isang pagkakataong nangyari sa atin.
10 At ginawang gayon ng mga lalake, at kumuha ng dalawang bagong bakang gatasan, at mga ikinabit sa karo, at kinulong ang kanilang mga guya sa bahay:
11 At kanilang inilagay ang kaban ng Panginoon sa karo, at ang kaha na may mga dagang ginto at mga larawan ng kanilang mga bukol.
12 At tinuwid ng mga baka ang daan sa Beth-semes; sila'y nagpatuloy sa lansangan, na umuungal habang yumayaon, at hindi lumiko sa kanan o sa kaliwa; at ang mga pangulo ng mga Filisteo ay sumunod sa kanila hanggang sa hangganan ng Beth-semes.
13 At silang mga Beth-semita ay umaani ng kanilang trigo sa libis: at kanilang itiningin ang kanilang mga mata, at nakita ang kaban, at nangagalak sa pagkakita niyaon.
14 At ang karo ay pumasok sa bukid ni Josue na Beth-semita, at tumayo roon, sa kinaroroonan ng isang malaking bato: at kanilang biniyak ang kahoy ng karo, at inihandog sa Panginoon ang mga baka na pinakahandog na susunugin.
15 At ibinaba ng mga Levita ang kaban ng Panginoon, at ang kaha na kasama niyaon, na may silid na mga hiyas na ginto, at mga ipinatong sa malaking bato at ang mga lalake sa Beth-semes ay naghandog ng mga handog na susunugin at naghain ng mga hain ng araw ding yaon sa Panginoon.
16 At nang makita ng limang pangulo ng mga Filisteo, ay bumalik sa Ecron nang araw ding yaon.
17 At ito ang mga bukol na ginto na ibinalik ng mga Filisteo sa Panginoon na pinakahandog dahil sa pagkakasala: sa Asdod ay isa, sa Gaza ay isa, sa Ascalon ay isa, sa Gath ay isa, sa Ecron ay isa;
18 At ang mga dagang ginto, ayon sa bilang ng lahat ng mga bayan ng mga Filisteo na nauukol sa limang pangulo, ng mga bayan na nakukutaan at gayon din ng mga nayon sa parang; sa makatuwid baga'y hanggang sa malaking bato na kanilang pinagbabaan ng kaban ng Panginoon, na ang batong yaon ay namamalagi hanggang sa araw na ito sa bukid ni Josue na Beth-semita.
19 At sumakit ang Dios sa mga tao sa Beth-semes, sapagka't kanilang tiningnan ang loob ng kaban ng Panginoon, sa makatuwid baga'y pumatay siya sa bayan ng pitong pung lalake at limang pung libong tao. At ang bayan ay nanaghoy, sapagka't sinaktan ng Panginoon ang bayan ng di kawasang pagpatay.
20 At ang mga lalake sa Beth-semes ay nagsabi, Sino ang makatatayo sa harap ng Panginoon, dito sa banal na Dios? at sino ang kaniyang sasampahin mula sa atin?
21 At sila'y nagsugo ng mga sugo sa mga tumatahan sa Chiriath-jearim, na nagsasabi, Ibinalik ng mga Filisteo ang kaban ng Panginoon; kayo'y magsilusong at iahon ninyo sa inyo.

3 And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.
4 Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.
5 Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.
6 Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?
7 Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them:
8 And take the ark of the Lord, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.
9 And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us: it was a chance that happened to us.
10 And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home:
11 And they laid the ark of the Lord upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods.
12 And the kine took the straight way to the way of Bethshemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Bethshemesh.
13 And they of Bethshemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.
14 And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Bethshemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered the kine a burnt offering unto the Lord.
15 And the Levites took down the ark of the Lord, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Bethshemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the Lord.
16 And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.

19 And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the Lord, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the Lord had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.
20 And the men of Bethshemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? and to whom shall he go up from us?
21 And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjathjearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the Lord; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.
