El arca en el país de los filisteos
5 Una vez capturado el arca de Dios, los filisteos lo llevaron de Eben-ézer a Asdod; 2 luego lo tomaron y lo metieron en el templo del dios Dagón, colocándolo junto al dios. 3 A la mañana siguiente, cuando llegaron los de Asdod, encontraron a Dagón tirado en el suelo ante el arca del Señor. Entonces levantaron a Dagón y lo volvieron a poner en su sitio. 4 Pero a la mañana siguiente llegaron nuevamente los de Asdod, y otra vez encontraron a Dagón tirado en el suelo ante el arca del Señor. Su cabeza y sus dos manos se habían quebrado y estaban sobre el umbral. Lo único que le quedaba entero era el tronco. 5 Por eso hasta ahora, cuando los sacerdotes de Dagón entran en el templo de Asdod, no pisan el umbral.
6 Después el Señor castigó severamente y llenó de terror a los de Asdod y su territorio, hiriéndolos con tumores. 7 Y cuando los habitantes de Asdod vieron lo que pasaba, dijeron: «El arca del Dios de Israel no debe quedarse entre nosotros, porque ese dios nos está castigando muy duramente, tanto a nosotros como a Dagón, nuestro dios.»
8 Por tanto, mandaron decir a todos los jefes filisteos que se reunieran con ellos, y les preguntaron:
—¿Qué hacemos con el arca del Dios de Israel?
—Llévenlo a la ciudad de Gat —respondieron ellos.
Y los filisteos lo llevaron allí. 9 Pero después que lo trasladaron, el Señor sembró el pánico en la ciudad, hiriendo a sus habitantes con unos tumores que les salieron a grandes y pequeños. 10 Entonces los filisteos trasladaron el arca de Dios a Ecrón; pero cuando el arca llegó allí, los habitantes de Ecrón gritaron: «¡Nos han traído el arca del Dios de Israel para matarnos a todos!»
11 Y como por toda la ciudad se extendió un pánico mortal a causa del duro castigo que Dios les había enviado, mandaron llamar a todos los jefes filisteos y les dijeron: «Llévense de aquí el arca del Dios de Israel. Devuélvanlo a su lugar, para que no nos mate a todos.»
12 Los gritos de la ciudad llegaban hasta el cielo, pues los que no se morían tenían el cuerpo lleno de tumores.

3 A’r Asdodiaid a gyfodasant yn fore drannoeth; ac wele Dagon wedi syrthio i lawr ar ei wyneb, gerbron arch yr Arglwydd. A hwy a gymerasant Dagon, ac a’i gosodasant eilwaith yn ei le. 4 Codasant hefyd yn fore drannoeth; ac wele Dagon wedi syrthio i lawr ar ei wyneb, gerbron arch yr Arglwydd: a phen Dagon, a dwy gledr ei ddwylo, oedd wedi torri ar y trothwy; corff Dagon yn unig a adawyd iddo ef. 5 Am hynny ni sathr offeiriaid Dagon, na neb a ddelo i mewn i dŷ Dagon, ar drothwy Dagon yn Asdod, hyd y dydd hwn. 6 A thrwm fu llaw yr Arglwydd ar yr Asdodiaid; ac efe a’u distrywiodd hwynt, ac a’u trawodd hwynt, sef Asdod a’i therfynau, â chlwyf y marchogion. 7 A phan welodd gwŷr Asdod mai felly yr oedd, dywedasant, Ni chaiff arch Duw Israel aros gyda ni: canys caled yw ei law ef arnom, ac ar Dagon ein duw. 8 Am hynny yr anfonasant, ac y casglasant holl arglwyddi’r Philistiaid atynt; ac a ddywedasant, Beth a wnawn ni i arch Duw Israel? A hwy a atebasant, Dyger arch Duw Israel o amgylch i Gath. A hwy a ddygasant arch Duw Israel oddi amgylch yno. 9 Ac wedi iddynt ei dwyn hi o amgylch, bu llaw yr Arglwydd yn erbyn y ddinas â dinistr mawr iawn: ac efe a drawodd wŷr y ddinas o fychan hyd fawr, a chlwyf y marchogion oedd yn eu dirgel leoedd. 10 Am hynny yr anfonasant hwy arch Duw i Ecron. A phan ddaeth arch Duw i Ecron, yr Ecroniaid a waeddasant, gan ddywedyd, Dygasant atom ni o amgylch arch Duw Israel, i’n lladd ni a’n pobl. 11 Am hynny yr anfonasant, ac y casglasant holl arglwyddi’r Philistiaid: ac a ddywedasant, Danfonwch ymaith arch Duw Israel, a dychweler hi adref; fel na laddo hi ni a’n pobl: canys dinistr angheuol oedd trwy’r holl ddinas; trom iawn oedd llaw Duw yno. 12 A’r gwŷr, y rhai ni buant feirw, a drawyd â chlwyf y marchogion: a gwaedd y ddinas a ddyrchafodd i’r nefoedd.

The Ark in Ashdod and Ekron
5 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer(A) to Ashdod.(B) 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.(C) 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen(D) on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken(E) off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. 5 That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.(F)
6 The Lord’s hand(G) was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation(H) on them and afflicted them with tumors.[a](I) 7 When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.” 8 So they called together all the rulers(J) of the Philistines and asked them, “What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?”
They answered, “Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath.(K)” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.
9 But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic.(L) He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.[b] 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.(M)
As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people.” 11 So they called together all the rulers(N) of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it[c] will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. 12 Those who did not die(O) were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.

5 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.
2 When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
3 And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the Lord. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
4 And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.
5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.
6 But the hand of the Lord was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.
7 And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.
8 They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.
9 And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the Lord was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.
10 Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.
11 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
12 And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
