4 Y SAMUEL habló á todo Israel. Por aquel tiempo salió Israel á encontrar en batalla á los Filisteos, y asentó campo junto á Eben-ezer, y los Filisteos asentaron el suyo en Aphec.
2 Y los Filisteos presentaron la batalla á Israel; y trabándose el combate, Israel fué vencido delante de los Filisteos, los cuales hirieron en la batalla por el campo como cuatro mil hombres.
3 Y vuelto que hubo el pueblo al campamento, los ancianos de Israel dijeron: ¿Por qué nos ha herido hoy Jehová delante de los Filisteos? Traigamos á nosotros de Silo el arca del pacto de Jehová, para que viniendo entre nosotros nos salve de la mano de nuestros enemigos.
4 Y envió el pueblo á Silo, y trajeron de allá el arca del pacto de Jehová de los ejércitos, que estaba asentado entre los querubines; y los dos hijos de Eli, Ophni y Phinees, estaban allí con el arca del pacto de Dios.
5 Y aconteció que, como el arca del pacto de Jehová vino al campo, todo Israel dió grita con tan grande júbilo, que la tierra tembló.
6 Y cuando los Filisteos oyeron la voz de júbilo, dijeron: ¿Qué voz de gran júbilo es esta en el campo de los Hebreos? Y supieron que el arca de Jehová había venido al campo.
7 Y los Filisteos tuvieron miedo, porque decían: Ha venido Dios al campo. Y dijeron: Ay de nosotros! pues antes de ahora no fué así.
8 Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de las manos de estos dioses fuertes? Estos son los dioses que hirieron á Egipto con toda plaga en el desierto.
9 Esforzaos, oh Filisteos, y sed hombres, porque no sirváis á los Hebreos, como ellos os han servido á vosotros: sed hombres, y pelead.
10 Pelearon pues los Filisteos, é Israel fué vencido, y huyeron cada cual á sus tiendas; y fué hecha muy grande mortandad, pues cayeron de Israel treinta mil hombres de á pie.
11 Y el arca de Dios fué tomada, y muertos los dos hijos de Eli, Ophni y Phinees.
12 Y corriendo de la batalla un hombre de Benjamín, vino aquel día á Silo, rotos sus vestidos y tierra sobre su cabeza:
13 Y cuando llegó, he aquí Eli que estaba sentado en una silla atalayando junto al camino; porque su corazón estaba temblando por causa del arca de Dios. Llegado pues aquel hombre á la ciudad, y dadas las nuevas, toda la ciudad gritó.
14 Y como Eli oyó el estruendo de la gritería, dijo: ¿Qué estruendo de alboroto es éste? Y aquel hombre vino apriesa, y dió las nuevas á Eli.
15 Era ya Eli de edad de noventa y ocho años, y sus ojos se habían entenebrecido, de modo que no podía ver.
16 Dijo pues aquel hombre á Eli: Yo vengo de la batalla, yo he escapado hoy del combate. Y él dijo: ¿Qué ha acontecido, hijo mío?
17 Y el mensajero respondió, y dijo: Israel huyó delante de los Filisteos, y también fué hecha gran mortandad en el pueblo; y también tus dos hijos, Ophni y Phinees, son muertos, y el arca de Dios fué tomada.
18 Y aconteció que como él hizo mención del arca de Dios, Eli cayó hacia atrás de la silla al lado de la puerta, y quebrósele la cerviz, y murió: porque era hombre viejo y pesado. Y había juzgado á Israel cuarenta años.
19 Y su nuera, la mujer de Phinees, que estaba preñada, cercana al parto, oyendo el rumor que el arca de Dios era tomada, y muertos su suegro y su marido, encorvóse y parió; porque sus dolores se habían ya derramado por ella.
20 Y al tiempo que se moría, decíanle las que estaban junto á ella: No tengas temor, porque has parido un hijo. Mas ella no respondió, ni paró mientes.
21 Y llamó al niño Ichâbod, diciendo: Traspasada es la gloria de Israel! por el arca de Dios que fué tomada, y porque era muerto su suegro, y su marido.
22 Dijo pues: Traspasada es la gloria de Israel: porque el arca de Dios fué tomada.

4 And Samuel’s word came to all Israel.
The Philistines Capture the Ark
Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer,(A) and the Philistines at Aphek.(B) 2 The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. 3 When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why(C) did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark(D) of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh,(E) so that he may go with us(F) and save us from the hand of our enemies.”
4 So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim.(G) And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout(H) that the ground shook. 6 Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew(I) camp?”
When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 7 the Philistines were afraid.(J) “A god has[a] come into the camp,” they said. “Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. 8 We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck(K) the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues(L) in the wilderness. 9 Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they(M) have been to you. Be men, and fight!”
10 So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated(N) and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.(O)
Death of Eli
12 That same day a Benjamite(P) ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust(Q) on his head. 13 When he arrived, there was Eli(R) sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.
14 Eli heard the outcry and asked, “What is the meaning of this uproar?”
The man hurried over to Eli, 15 who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes(S) had failed so that he could not see. 16 He told Eli, “I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.”
Eli asked, “What happened, my son?”
17 The man who brought the news replied, “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead,(T) and the ark of God has been captured.”(U)
18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led[b](V) Israel forty years.(W)
19 His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. 20 As she was dying, the women attending her said, “Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention.
21 She named the boy Ichabod,[c](X) saying, “The Glory(Y) has departed from Israel”—because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 She said, “The Glory(Z) has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”(AA)

The Defeat of the Israelites.[b] 1 Samuel’s word came to all of Israel. Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. They were camped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines were encamped in Aphek. 2 The Philistines drew up in battle line against the Israelites, and when they joined up in battle, the Israelites were defeated by the Philistines who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield.
3 When the soldiers came back into camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why has the Lord brought defeat upon us today at the hands of the Philistines? Let us go get the Ark of the Covenant from Shiloh so that it can go out before us and save us from the hands of our enemies.”
The Ark Is Captured. 4 So the people sent to Shiloh to bring the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord of hosts who is enthroned between the cherubim.[c] The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the Ark of the Covenant of God. 5 When the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord came into the camp, all of the Israelites raised such a loud shout that it shook the earth.
6 When the Philistines heard the uproar, they asked, “What is this great uproar in the Hebrew camp?” When they found out that the Ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 7 the Philistines became frightened. They said, “A god has come into the camp!” They said, “Woe to us, for nothing like this has happened before. 8 Woe to us! Who will deliver us out of the hands of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the desert. 9 Be strong. Act manfully, O Philistines, or you will end up as slaves to the Hebrews, just like they were to you. Act manfully and fight!”
10 So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated, and each man fled to his own tent. The slaughter was great, for Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 The Ark of God was captured and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were killed.[d]
12 The Death of Eli. That same day a Benjaminite ran from the battle line to Shiloh. His clothes were torn and there was dust on his head. 13 He came upon Eli who was sitting by the side of the road. He was watching, concerned about the Ark of God. When the man entered the city and told them what had happened, the entire city raised up a cry.
14 When Eli heard the uproar, he said, “What is the meaning of this outcry?” The man hurried over and explained it to Eli. 15 Now Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyesight was so poor that he could barely see. 16 The man said to Eli, “I am the one who came from the battle. I escaped from the battle today.” He asked, “How did things go, my son?” 17 The messenger answered, “Israel has fled from before the Philistines, and there has been a great slaughter. Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the Ark of God has been captured.” 18 At the mention of the Ark of God, he fell over backwards off his seat beside the gate, and he broke his neck and died, for he was a very old man and quite heavy. He had been a judge[e] of Israel for forty years.
19 [f]His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant. When she heard the news that the Ark of God had been captured, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she sunk to her knees and gave birth, for she was overcome by her labor pains. 20 As she was dying, the women who were standing around her said to her, “Do not fear, for you have borne a son.” But she gave no response, nor did she even look at it. 21 Then she named the child Ichabod, for she said, “The glory of God has departed from Israel,” for the Ark of God had been captured and also because of what had happened to her father-in-law and her husband. 22 For this she said, “The glory of God has departed from Israel, for the Ark of God has been captured.”

- 1 Samuel 4:19 This passage shows how the devastating losses for Israel overshadowed what otherwise would be a hopeful sign with the birth of Phinehas’s son Ichabod.
