Ang Pagkamatay ni Samuel
25 Namatay si Samuel, at ang buong sambayanang Israel ay nagtipon upang magluksa. Inilibing nila ang kanyang bangkay sa kanyang tahanan sa Rama.
Si David, si Nabal, at si Abigail
Si David naman ay lumipat sa ilang ng Paran. 2 Sa Maon ay may isang taong mayaman. Malaki ang kanyang kawan sa Carmel. Mayroon siyang tatlong libong tupa at sanlibong kambing. 3 Nabal[a] ang kanyang pangalan at buhat sa angkan ni Caleb. Ang asawa niya'y si Abigail. Ang babaing ito'y maganda at matalino ngunit si Nabal ay masungit at magaspang ang pag-uugali.
4 Minsan, nabalitaan ni David na ginugupitan ni Nabal ang kanyang mga tupa. 5 Pinapunta ni David sa Carmel ang sampu sa kanyang tauhan 6 at ipinasabi ang ganito: “Sumainyo ang kapayapaan at sa buo ninyong sambahayan. 7 Nabalitaan naming ikaw ay naggugupit ng balahibo ng tupa. Ang mga pastol mo ay nakasama namin at hindi namin sila ginambala; sa halip ay tinulungan namin sila at hindi naligalig sa buong panahon ng pagpapastol nila rito sa Carmel. 8 Ito'y mapapatunayan nila sa inyo. Dahil dito, tanggapin mo ang aking mga tauhan at ipinapakiusap kong tulungan mo ako. Bigyan mo ako ng anumang maibibigay mo para maihanda sa aming pista.”
9 Sumunod naman ang mga inutusan ni David. Sinabi nila kay Nabal ang lahat ng ipinapasabi sa kanila at naghintay ng sagot. 10 Sinabi ni Nabal, “Sino ba si David? Sinong anak ni Jesse? Talagang maraming alipin ngayon na lumalayas sa kanilang mga amo. 11 Ang tinapay, inumin at pagkain para sa aking mga manggugupit ay hindi ko maibibigay sa mga taong hindi ko alam kung saang lupalop nanggaling!”
12 Nang marinig ito, nagbalik sila kay David at sinabing lahat ang sinabi ni Nabal. 13 Dahil dito, sinabi ni David sa kanyang mga tauhan, “Ihanda ninyo ang mga tabak ninyo!” Humanda naman ang apatnaraan sa kanyang mga tauhan at sumama sa kanya; naiwan ang dalawandaan upang magbantay sa kanilang mga dala-dalahan.
14 Sinabi ng isang pastol kay Abigail, “Si David po ay nagpadala ng sugo sa inyong asawa at magalang na nakipag-usap ngunit sila'y ininsulto ng inyong asawa. 15 Mababait ang mga taong iyon. Tinulungan nila kami at wala silang kinuhang anuman sa amin sa buong panahong kasama namin sila sa parang. 16 Binantayan po nila kami araw-gabi sa aming pagpapastol. 17 Pag-isipan po ninyo kung ano ang mabuting gawin ngayon, sapagkat ang nangyari ay tiyak na magbubunga ng masama sa aming panginoon at sa buo niyang sambahayan. Hindi naman namin masabi sa kanya ito sapagkat matigas ang ulo niya; tiyak na hindi niya kami papakinggan.”
18 Dali-daling naghanda si Abigail ng dalawandaang tinapay. Pinuno niya ng alak ang dalawang sisidlan, nagpapatay ng limang tupa, nagpakuha ng limang takal ng sinangag na trigo, sandaang kumpol ng pasas at dalawandaang tinapay na igos; lahat ng ito'y ikinarga niya sa mga asno. 19 Pagkatapos, sinabi niya sa ilan niyang tauhan, “Mauna kayo sa akin, at susunod ako.” Hindi niya ito ipinaalam kay Nabal na kanyang asawa.
20 Habang pababa si Abigail sa isang burol, dumarating naman sina David mula sa kabila. 21 Sa galit ni David kay Nabal ay nasabi niya, “Sayang lamang ang pangangalaga natin sa ari-arian ng Nabal na iyon. Tinulungan natin siya at walang nabawas sa kanyang kawan, ngunit ito pa ang iginanti sa atin. 22 Parusahan sana ako ng Diyos kapag hindi ko pinatay bukas ang lahat ng lalaki sa kanyang sambahayan.”
23 Nang makita ni Abigail si David, nagmamadali siyang bumabâ sa kanyang asno at nagpatirapa sa harapan ni David. 24 Sinabi niya, “Ako na po ang inyong sisihin. Pakinggan po muna sana ninyo ang aking sasabihin. 25 Huwag po ninyong pansinin si Nabal. Wala pong kuwentang tao iyon. Tamang-tama po sa kanya ang kanyang pangalan, siya po'y luku-luko. Hindi ko po kasi nakita ang mga tauhan ninyong pinapunta sa amin. 26 Ngayon po'y niloob ni Yahweh na huwag matuloy ang inyong paghihiganti upang hindi mabahiran ng dugo ang inyong mga kamay. Saksi si Yahweh, ang Diyos na buháy,[b] lahat ng naghahangad ng masama laban sa inyo ay mapapahamak, tulad ni Nabal. 27 Narito po, tanggapin po ninyo ang nakayanan ng inyong lingkod at ipamigay ninyo sa inyong mga tauhan. 28 At patawarin po ninyo ang anumang pagkakamali ko. Sigurado kong loloobin ni Yahweh na kayo'y maging hari, pati ng inyong lahi sapagkat nakikipaglaban kayo para sa kanya, at hindi kayo gagawa ng anumang kasamaan habang kayo'y nabubuhay. 29 Kung may magtatangka man sa inyong buhay, iingatan kayo ni Yahweh na inyong Diyos. Ang mga kaaway naman ninyo ay ihahagis na parang bato ng tirador. 30 At kung loobin ni Yahweh na maging hari na kayo sa Israel tulad ng kanyang ipinangako, 31 wala kayong pagsisisihan. Hindi kayo uusigin ng inyong budhi sapagkat hindi kayo pumatay nang walang sapat na dahilan o kaya'y naghiganti sa inyong kaaway. At sana'y maalala ninyo ako sa sandaling marapatin na ni Yahweh na maitatag na ang inyong sambahayan.”
32 Sinabi ni David kay Abigail, “Purihin si Yahweh na nagpapunta sa iyo rito. 33 Salamat sa kanya dahil sa iyong kabutihan, sapagkat sa ginawa mo'y nakaiwas ako sa pagpatay ng tao at magsagawa ng sariling paghihiganti. 34 Niloob niyang huwag ko kayong pagbuhatan ng kamay. Saksi si Yahweh, ang Diyos na buháy,[c] kung hindi ka naparito ngayon, bukas ng umaga ay patay na sanang lahat ang lalaki sa inyong sambahayan.” 35 Tinanggap ni David ang mga dala ni Abigail. Pagkatapos, sinabi niya rito, “Umuwi ka na. Huwag ka nang mag-alala at gagawin ko ang kahilingan mo.”
36 At umuwi na si Abigail. Pagdating ng bahay, nakita niya ang handaan ni Nabal, walang iniwan sa papista ng isang hari. Naratnan niyang lasing na lasing ito kaya't wala siyang sinabing anuman nang gabing iyon. 37 Kinabukasan, nang wala na ang pagkalasing nito, isinalaysay niya ang buong pangyayari. Nang marinig ni Nabal ang lahat, inatake siya sa puso at nanigas ang buong katawan. 38 Pagkaraan pa ng sampung araw, pinarusahan ni Yahweh si Nabal at ito'y namatay.
39 Nang mabalitaan ni David ang nangyari kay Nabal, sinabi niya, “Purihin si Yahweh. Ipinaghiganti niya ako sa paghamak na ginawa sa akin ni Nabal at inilayo niya ako sa pagkakasala. Pinagbayad ni Yahweh si Nabal sa kanyang kasamaan.”
Si David ay nagpasugo kay Abigail at ipinasabing nais niya itong maging asawa. 40 Nang dumating sa Carmel ang mga inutusan ni David, sinabi nila, “Ipinapasabi po ni David na nais niya kayong mapangasawa.”
41 Yumukod si Abigail, ang mukha'y halos sayad sa lupa, at sinabi, “Narito ang inyong lingkod, handa po akong maghugas ng paa ng inyong mga tauhan.” 42 Nagmamadali siyang tumayo, sumakay sa asno at sumama sa mga tauhan ni David, kasama ang lima sa kanyang mga katulong. At siya'y naging asawa ni David.
43 Asawa na noon ni David si Ahinoam na taga-Jezreel, at ngayo'y naging asawa rin niya si Abigail. 44 Si(A) Mical naman na asawa ni David ay ibinigay ni Saul kay Palti na anak ni Lais ng Gallim.

David, Nabal and Abigail
25 Now Samuel died,(A) and all Israel assembled and mourned(B) for him; and they buried him at his home in Ramah.(C) Then David moved down into the Desert of Paran.[a]
2 A certain man in Maon,(D) who had property there at Carmel, was very wealthy.(E) He had a thousand goats and three thousand sheep, which he was shearing(F) in Carmel. 3 His name was Nabal and his wife’s name was Abigail.(G) She was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her husband was surly and mean in his dealings—he was a Calebite.(H)
4 While David was in the wilderness, he heard that Nabal was shearing sheep. 5 So he sent ten young men and said to them, “Go up to Nabal at Carmel and greet him in my name. 6 Say to him: ‘Long life to you! Good health(I) to you and your household! And good health to all that is yours!(J)
7 “‘Now I hear that it is sheep-shearing time. When your shepherds were with us, we did not mistreat(K) them, and the whole time they were at Carmel nothing of theirs was missing. 8 Ask your own servants and they will tell you. Therefore be favorable toward my men, since we come at a festive time. Please give your servants and your son David whatever(L) you can find for them.’”
9 When David’s men arrived, they gave Nabal this message in David’s name. Then they waited.
10 Nabal answered David’s servants, “Who(M) is this David? Who is this son of Jesse? Many servants are breaking away from their masters these days. 11 Why should I take my bread(N) and water, and the meat I have slaughtered for my shearers, and give it to men coming from who knows where?”
12 David’s men turned around and went back. When they arrived, they reported every word. 13 David said to his men(O), “Each of you strap on your sword!” So they did, and David strapped his on as well. About four hundred men went(P) up with David, while two hundred stayed with the supplies.(Q)
14 One of the servants told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, “David sent messengers from the wilderness to give our master his greetings,(R) but he hurled insults at them. 15 Yet these men were very good to us. They did not mistreat(S) us, and the whole time we were out in the fields near them nothing was missing.(T) 16 Night and day they were a wall(U) around us the whole time we were herding our sheep near them. 17 Now think it over and see what you can do, because disaster is hanging over our master and his whole household. He is such a wicked(V) man that no one can talk to him.”
18 Abigail acted quickly. She took two hundred loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five dressed sheep, five seahs[b] of roasted grain,(W) a hundred cakes of raisins(X) and two hundred cakes of pressed figs, and loaded them on donkeys.(Y) 19 Then she told her servants, “Go on ahead;(Z) I’ll follow you.” But she did not tell(AA) her husband Nabal.
20 As she came riding her donkey into a mountain ravine, there were David and his men descending toward her, and she met them. 21 David had just said, “It’s been useless—all my watching over this fellow’s property in the wilderness so that nothing of his was missing.(AB) He has paid(AC) me back evil(AD) for good. 22 May God deal with David,[c] be it ever so severely,(AE) if by morning I leave alive one male(AF) of all who belong to him!”
23 When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off her donkey and bowed down before David with her face to the ground.(AG) 24 She fell at his feet and said: “Pardon your servant, my lord,(AH) and let me speak to you; hear what your servant has to say. 25 Please pay no attention, my lord, to that wicked man Nabal. He is just like his name—his name means Fool(AI),(AJ) and folly goes with him. And as for me, your servant, I did not see the men my lord sent. 26 And now, my lord, as surely as the Lord your God lives and as you live, since the Lord has kept you from bloodshed(AK) and from avenging(AL) yourself with your own hands, may your enemies and all who are intent on harming my lord be like Nabal.(AM) 27 And let this gift,(AN) which your servant has brought to my lord, be given to the men who follow you.
28 “Please forgive(AO) your servant’s presumption. The Lord your God will certainly make a lasting(AP) dynasty for my lord, because you fight the Lord’s battles,(AQ) and no wrongdoing(AR) will be found in you as long as you live. 29 Even though someone is pursuing you to take your life,(AS) the life of my lord will be bound securely in the bundle of the living by the Lord your God, but the lives of your enemies he will hurl(AT) away as from the pocket of a sling.(AU) 30 When the Lord has fulfilled for my lord every good thing he promised concerning him and has appointed him ruler(AV) over Israel, 31 my lord will not have on his conscience the staggering burden of needless bloodshed or of having avenged himself. And when the Lord your God has brought my lord success, remember(AW) your servant.”(AX)
32 David said to Abigail, “Praise(AY) be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you today to meet me. 33 May you be blessed for your good judgment and for keeping me from bloodshed(AZ) this day and from avenging myself with my own hands. 34 Otherwise, as surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, who has kept me from harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, not one male belonging to Nabal(BA) would have been left alive by daybreak.”
35 Then David accepted from her hand what she had brought him and said, “Go home in peace. I have heard your words and granted(BB) your request.”
36 When Abigail went to Nabal, he was in the house holding a banquet like that of a king. He was in high(BC) spirits and very drunk.(BD) So she told(BE) him nothing at all until daybreak. 37 Then in the morning, when Nabal was sober, his wife told him all these things, and his heart failed him and he became like a stone.(BF) 38 About ten days later, the Lord struck(BG) Nabal and he died.
39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Praise be to the Lord, who has upheld my cause against Nabal for treating me with contempt. He has kept his servant from doing wrong and has brought Nabal’s wrongdoing down on his own head.”
Then David sent word to Abigail, asking her to become his wife. 40 His servants went to Carmel and said to Abigail, “David has sent us to you to take you to become his wife.”
41 She bowed down with her face to the ground and said, “I am your servant and am ready to serve you and wash the feet of my lord’s servants.” 42 Abigail(BH) quickly got on a donkey and, attended by her five female servants, went with David’s messengers and became his wife. 43 David had also married Ahinoam(BI) of Jezreel, and they both were his wives.(BJ) 44 But Saul had given his daughter Michal, David’s wife, to Paltiel[d](BK) son of Laish, who was from Gallim.(BL)

25 (A)Now Samuel died. And all Israel assembled (B)and mourned for him, and they buried him (C)in his house at (D)Ramah.

Then David rose and went down to (E)the wilderness of Paran. 2 And there was a man in (F)Maon whose business was in (G)Carmel. The man was very rich; he had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. (H)He was shearing his sheep in Carmel. 3 Now the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. The woman was discerning and beautiful, but the man was harsh and badly behaved; (I)he was a Calebite. 4 David heard in the wilderness that Nabal (J)was shearing his sheep. 5 So David sent ten young men. And David said to the young men, “Go up to Carmel, and go to Nabal and greet him in my name. 6 And thus you shall greet him:[a] (K)‘Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have. 7 I hear that you have shearers. Now your shepherds have been with us, and we did them no harm, (L)and they missed nothing all the time they were in Carmel. 8 Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let my young men find favor in your eyes, for we come (M)on a feast day. Please give whatever you have at hand to your servants and to your son David.’”
9 When David's young men came, they said all this to Nabal in the name of David, and then they waited. 10 And Nabal answered David's servants, (N)“Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? (O)There are many servants these days who are breaking away from their masters. 11 Shall I take (P)my bread and my water and my meat that I have killed for my shearers and give it to (Q)men who come from I do not know where?” 12 So David's young men turned away and came back and told him all this. 13 And David said to his men, “Every man strap on his sword!” And every man of them strapped on his sword. David also strapped on his sword. And (R)about four hundred men went up after David, (S)while two hundred (T)remained with the baggage.
14 But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, “Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to greet our master, and he railed at them. 15 Yet the men were very good to us, and we suffered no harm, (U)and we did not miss anything when we were in the fields, as long as we went with them. 16 They were (V)a wall to us both by night and by day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep. 17 Now therefore know this and consider what you should do, (W)for harm is determined against our master and against all his house, and he is such (X)a worthless man that one cannot speak to him.”
18 Then Abigail made haste and took two hundred loaves and two skins of wine and five sheep already prepared and five seahs[b] of parched grain and a hundred clusters of raisins and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on donkeys. 19 And she said to her young men, “Go on before me; behold, I come after you.” But she did not tell her husband Nabal. 20 And as she rode on the donkey and came down under cover of the mountain, behold, David and his men came down toward her, and she met them. 21 Now David had said, “Surely in vain have I guarded all that this fellow has in the wilderness, (Y)so that nothing was missed of all that belonged to him, and he has (Z)returned me evil for good. 22 (AA)God do so to the enemies of David[c] and more also, if by morning I leave so much as one male of all who belong to him.”
23 When Abigail saw David, she hurried (AB)and got down from the donkey (AC)and fell before David on her face and bowed to the ground. 24 She fell at his feet and said, (AD)“On me alone, my lord, be the guilt. Please let your servant speak in your ears, and hear the words of your servant. 25 Let not my lord regard (AE)this worthless fellow, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. Nabal[d] is his name, and folly is with him. But I your servant did not see the young men of my lord, whom you sent. 26 Now then, my lord, (AF)as the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, because (AG)the Lord has restrained you from bloodguilt and from (AH)saving with your own hand, now then (AI)let your enemies and those who seek to do evil to my lord be as Nabal. 27 And now let this (AJ)present that your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow my lord. 28 Please forgive the trespass of your servant. For the Lord will certainly make my lord (AK)a sure house, because my lord (AL)is fighting the battles of the Lord, and evil shall not be found in you so long as you live. 29 If men rise up to pursue you and to seek your life, the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living in the care of the Lord your God. And the lives of your enemies (AM)he shall sling out as from the hollow of a sling. 30 And when the Lord has done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you and has appointed you prince[e] over Israel, 31 my lord shall have no cause of grief or pangs of conscience for having shed blood without cause or for my lord (AN)working salvation himself. And when the Lord has dealt well with my lord, then remember your servant.”
32 And David said to Abigail, (AO)“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! 33 Blessed be your discretion, and blessed be you, (AP)who have kept me this day from bloodguilt (AQ)and from working salvation with my own hand! 34 For as surely (AR)as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, (AS)who has restrained me from hurting you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, truly by morning there had not been left to Nabal so much as one male.” 35 Then David received from her hand what she had brought him. And he said to her, (AT)“Go up in peace to your house. See, I have obeyed your voice, and I have granted your petition.”
36 And Abigail came to Nabal, and behold, (AU)he was holding a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. And Nabal's heart (AV)was merry within him, for he was very drunk. So she told him nothing (AW)at all until the morning light. 37 In the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. 38 And about ten days later (AX)the Lord struck Nabal, and he died.
39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, (AY)“Blessed be the Lord who has (AZ)avenged the insult I received at the hand of Nabal, (BA)and has kept back his servant from wrongdoing. (BB)The Lord has returned the evil of Nabal on his own head.” Then David sent and (BC)spoke to Abigail, to take her as his wife. 40 When the servants of David came to Abigail at Carmel, they said to her, “David has sent us to you to take you to him as his wife.” 41 And she rose (BD)and bowed with her face to the ground and said, “Behold, your handmaid is a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.” 42 And Abigail hurried and rose and mounted a donkey, and her five young women attended her. She followed the messengers of David and became his wife.
43 David also took Ahinoam of (BE)Jezreel, (BF)and both of them became his wives. 44 Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was of Gallim.
