David a răspuns preotului Ahimelec: „Împăratul mi-a dat o poruncă şi mi-a zis: ‘Nimeni să nu ştie nimic de pricina pentru care te trimit şi de porunca pe care ţi-am dat-o.’ Am hotărât un loc de întâlnire cu oamenii mei. Acum ce ai la îndemână? Dă-mi cinci pâini sau ce se va găsi.” Preotul a răspuns lui David: „N-am pâine obişnuită la îndemână, ci numai pâine sfinţită(A); doar dacă oamenii tăi s-au(B) ferit de împreunarea cu femei!”

– Regele mi-a încredinţat o misiune, spunându-mi: „Nimeni să nu ştie nimic despre misiunea în care te-am trimis şi pe care ţi-am încredinţat-o.“ Iar cu oamenii mei am hotărât un anume loc de întâlnire. Acum însă ce ai la îndemână? Dă-mi vreo cinci pâini sau ce vei găsi.

Dar preotul i-a zis:

– Nu am la îndemână pâine obişnuită. Pot doar să-ţi dau pâine sfinţită, însă numai dacă oamenii tăi s-au ferit de împreunarea cu femei.[a]

David answered Ahimelek the priest, “The king sent me on a mission and said to me, ‘No one is to know anything about the mission I am sending you on.’ As for my men, I have told them to meet me at a certain place. Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever you can find.”

But the priest answered David, “I don’t have any ordinary bread(A) on hand; however, there is some consecrated(B) bread here—provided the men have kept(C) themselves from women.”

And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.

Now therefore what is under thine hand? give me five loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is present.

And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.

So David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has ordered me on some business, and said to me, ‘Do not let anyone know anything about the business on which I send you, or what I have commanded you.’ And I have directed my young men to such and such a place. Now therefore, what have you on hand? Give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or whatever can be found.”

And the priest answered David and said, “There is no [a]common bread on hand; but there is (A)holy[b] bread, (B)if the young men have at least kept themselves from women.”
