El Señor rechaza a Saúl
15 Un día Samuel dijo a Saúl: «El Señor me envió a ungirte como rey sobre su pueblo Israel. Así que pon atención al mensaje del Señor. 2 Así dice el Señor de los Ejércitos: “He decidido castigar a los amalecitas por lo que le hicieron a Israel, pues no dejaron pasar al pueblo cuando salía de Egipto. 3 Así que ve y ataca a los amalecitas ahora mismo. Destruye por completo todo lo que les pertenezca; no les tengas compasión. Mátalos a todos, hombres y mujeres, niños y recién nacidos, toros y ovejas, camellos y asnos”».
4 Saúl reunió al ejército y pasó revista en Telayin: eran doscientos mil soldados de infantería más diez mil soldados de Judá. 5 Luego se dirigió a la ciudad de Amalec y tendió una emboscada en el barranco. 6 Los quenitas se apartaron de los amalecitas, pues Saúl les dijo: «¡Váyanse de aquí! Salgan y apártense de los amalecitas. Ustedes fueron bondadosos con todos los israelitas cuando ellos salieron de Egipto. Así que no quiero destruirlos a ustedes junto con ellos».
7 Saúl atacó a los amalecitas desde Javilá hasta Sur, que está cerca de la frontera de Egipto. 8 A Agag, rey de Amalec, lo capturó vivo, pero a todos los habitantes los mató a filo de espada. 9 Además de perdonarle la vida al rey Agag, Saúl y su ejército preservaron las mejores ovejas y vacas, los terneros más gordos y, en fin, todo lo que era de valor. Nada de esto quisieron destruir; solo destruyeron lo que era inútil y lo que no servía.
10 La palabra del Señor vino a Samuel: 11 «Lamento haber hecho rey a Saúl, pues se ha apartado de mí y no ha llevado a cabo mis instrucciones».
Tanto se alteró Samuel que pasó la noche clamando al Señor.
12 Por la mañana, muy temprano, se levantó y fue a encontrarse con Saúl, pero dijeron: «Saúl se fue a Carmel y allí se erigió un monumento. Luego dio una vuelta y continuó hacia Guilgal».
13 Cuando Samuel llegó, Saúl dijo:
—¡Que el Señor te bendiga! He cumplido las instrucciones del Señor.
14 —Y entonces, ¿qué significan esos balidos de oveja que me parece oír? —reclamó Samuel—. ¿Y cómo es que oigo mugidos de vaca?
15 —Son las que nuestras tropas trajeron del país de Amalec —respondió Saúl—. Dejaron con vida a las mejores ovejas y vacas para ofrecerlas al Señor tu Dios, pero todo lo demás lo destruimos.
16 —¡Basta! —lo interrumpió Samuel—. Voy a comunicarte lo que el Señor me dijo anoche.
—Te escucho —respondió Saúl.
17 Entonces Samuel dijo:
—¿No es cierto que, aunque te creías poca cosa, has llegado a ser jefe de las tribus de Israel? ¿No fue el Señor quien te ungió como rey de Israel, 18 y te envió a cumplir una misión? Él te dijo: “Ve y destruye a esos pecadores, los amalecitas. Atácalos hasta acabar con ellos”. 19 ¿Por qué, entonces, no obedeciste al Señor? ¿Por qué echaste mano del botín e hiciste lo malo ante los ojos del Señor?
20 —¡Yo sí he obedecido al Señor! —insistió Saúl—. He cumplido la misión que él me encomendó. Traje prisionero a Agag, rey de Amalec, pero destruí a los amalecitas. 21 Y del botín, los soldados tomaron ovejas y vacas, destinadas al exterminio, con el propósito de ofrecerlas en Guilgal al Señor tu Dios.
22 Samuel respondió:
«¿Qué agrada más al Señor:
que se le ofrezcan holocaustos y sacrificios
o que se obedezca lo que él dice?
El obedecer vale más que el sacrificio,
y prestar atención, más que la grasa de carneros.
23 La rebeldía es tan grave como la adivinación,
y la arrogancia, como el pecado de la idolatría.
Y como tú has rechazado la palabra del Señor,
él te ha rechazado como rey».
24 —¡He pecado! —admitió Saúl—. He desobedecido la orden del Señor y tus instrucciones. Los soldados me intimidaron y les hice caso. 25 Pero te ruego que perdones mi pecado y que regreses conmigo para que yo adore al Señor.
26 —No voy a regresar contigo —respondió Samuel—. Tú has rechazado la palabra del Señor, y él te ha rechazado como rey de Israel.
27 Cuando Samuel se dio vuelta para irse, Saúl le agarró el borde del manto y se lo arrancó. 28 Entonces Samuel dijo:
—Hoy mismo el Señor ha arrancado de tus manos el reino de Israel y se lo ha entregado a otro más digno que tú. 29 En verdad, el que es la Gloria de Israel no miente ni cambia de parecer, pues no es hombre para cambiar de opinión.
30 —¡He pecado! —respondió Saúl—. Pero te pido que por ahora me sigas reconociendo ante los jefes de mi pueblo y ante todo Israel. Regresa conmigo para que yo adore al Señor tu Dios.
31 Samuel regresó con él, y Saúl adoró al Señor. 32 Luego dijo Samuel:
—Tráiganme a Agag, rey de Amalec.
Agag se acercó confiado,[a] pues pensaba: «Sin duda que el trago amargo de la muerte ya pasó».
33 Pero Samuel dijo:
—Ya que tu espada dejó a tantas mujeres sin hijos,
también sin su hijo se quedará tu madre.
Y allí en Guilgal, en presencia del Señor, Samuel descuartizó a Agag.
34 Luego regresó a Ramá, mientras que Saúl se fue a su casa en Guibeá de Saúl. 35 Samuel nunca más volvió a ver a Saúl, aunque hacía duelo por él. Y el Señor lamentaba haber puesto a Saúl como rey de Israel.

Saul Destroys the Amalekites
15 One day Samuel said to Saul, “The Lord sent me to anoint you king over his people Israel. Now listen to his message. 2 The Lord All-Powerful says: ‘When the Israelites came out of Egypt, the Amalekites tried to stop them from going to Canaan. I saw what the Amalekites did. 3 Now go fight against the Amalekites. You must completely destroy the Amalekites and everything that belongs to them. Don’t let anything live; you must kill all the men and women and all of their children and little babies. You must kill all of their cattle and sheep and all of their camels and donkeys.’”
4 Saul gathered the army together at Telaim. There were 200,000 foot soldiers and 10,000 other men, including the men from Judah. 5 Then Saul went to the city of Amalek and waited in the valley. 6 He said to the Kenites, “Go away! Leave the Amalekites. Then I won’t destroy you with the Amalekites. You showed kindness to the Israelites when they came out of Egypt.” So the Kenites left the Amalekites.
7 Saul defeated the Amalekites. He fought them and chased them all the way from Havilah to Shur, at the border of Egypt. 8 Agag was the king of the Amalekites. Saul captured Agag alive. Saul let Agag live, but he killed all the men in Agag’s army. 9 Saul and the Israelite soldiers felt bad about destroying everything. So they let Agag live. They also kept the fat cattle, the best sheep, and the lambs. They kept everything that was worth keeping. They didn’t want to destroy those things. They destroyed only what was not worth keeping.
Samuel Tells Saul About His Sin
10 Then Samuel received this message from the Lord: 11 “Saul has stopped following me, so I am sorry that I made him king. He is not doing what I tell him.” Samuel became angry and cried to the Lord all night.
12 Samuel got up early the next morning and went to meet Saul. But the people told Samuel, “Saul went to Carmel. He went there to set up a stone monument to honor himself. Then he left there and went down to Gilgal.”
So Samuel went to Saul. Saul had just offered the first part of the things he took from the Amalekites as a burnt offering to the Lord.[a] 13 When Samuel came near to Saul, Saul greeted him and said, “The Lord bless you! I have obeyed the Lord’s commands.”
14 But Samuel said, “Then what is that sound I hear? Why do I hear sheep and cattle?”
15 Saul said, “The soldiers took them from the Amalekites. They saved the best sheep and cattle to burn as sacrifices to the Lord your God. But we destroyed everything else.”
16 Samuel said to Saul, “Stop! Let me tell you what the Lord told me last night.”
Saul answered, “Tell me what he said.”
17 Samuel said, “In the past you didn’t think that you were important, but the Lord chose you to be the king. So you became the leader of the tribes of Israel. 18 The Lord sent you on a special mission. He said, ‘Go and destroy all the Amalekites. They are evil people. Destroy them all! Fight them until they are completely finished.’ 19 So why didn’t you listen to the Lord? You did what the Lord said is wrong because you wanted to keep what you took in battle.”
20 Saul said, “But I did obey the Lord! I went where the Lord sent me. I destroyed all the Amalekites. I brought back only one—their king Agag. 21 And the soldiers took the best sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Lord your God at Gilgal.”
22 But Samuel answered, “Which pleases the Lord more: burnt offerings and sacrifices or obeying his commands? It is better to obey the Lord than to offer sacrifices to him. It is better to listen to him than to offer the fat from rams. 23 Refusing to obey is as bad as the sin of sorcery. Being stubborn and doing what you want is like the sin of worshiping idols. You refused to obey the Lord’s command, so he now refuses to accept you as king.”
24 Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned. I did not obey the Lord’s commands, and I did not do what you told me. I was afraid of the people, and I did what they said. 25 Now I beg you, forgive me for doing this sin. Come back with me, so I may worship the Lord.”
26 But Samuel said to Saul, “I won’t go back with you. You rejected the Lord’s command, and now the Lord rejects you as king of Israel.”
27 When Samuel turned to leave, Saul caught Samuel’s robe. The robe tore. 28 Samuel said to Saul, “In this same way the Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today. He has given the kingdom to one of your friends, a man who is a better person than you. 29 The one who lives forever, the God of Israel, does not lie and will not change his mind. He is not like a man who is always changing his mind.”
30 Saul answered, “All right, I sinned! But please come back with me. Show me some respect in front of the leaders and the Israelites. Come back with me so that I may worship the Lord your God.” 31 Samuel went back with Saul, and Saul worshiped the Lord.
32 Samuel said, “Bring King Agag of the Amalekites to me.”
Agag came to Samuel. Agag was tied with chains and thought, “Surely he won’t kill me.”[b]
33 But Samuel said to Agag, “Your sword took babies from their mothers. So now, your mother will have no children.” And Samuel cut Agag to pieces before the Lord at Gilgal.
34 Then Samuel left and went to Ramah. And Saul went up to his home in Gibeah. 35 After that Samuel never saw Saul again. Samuel was very sad for Saul. And the Lord was very sorry that he had made Saul king of Israel.

15 撒母耳对扫罗说：“耶和华差遣我膏立你作他子民以色列的王，所以现在你要听耶和华的话。 2 万军之耶和华这样说：‘以色列人从埃及上来的时候，亚玛力人对他们所行的，在路上攻击他们的事，我必要惩罚。 3 现在你要去攻打亚玛力人，彻底毁灭他们所有的一切，不可怜惜他们。无论男女、孩童，或吃奶的婴儿，牛羊、骆驼、驴子，都要杀死。’”

4 于是扫罗招聚众人，在提拉因数点他们，共有步兵二十万，另有犹大人一万。 5 扫罗到了亚玛力人的城市，就在山谷中设下伏兵。 6 扫罗又对基尼人说：“你们走吧！离开亚玛力人下去吧！免得我把你们与他们一同消灭。因为以色列众人从埃及上来的时候，你们曾经以慈爱待他们。”于是基尼人离开亚玛力人去了。 7 扫罗击杀亚玛力人，从哈腓拉直到埃及东的书珥， 8 生擒了亚玛力人的王亚甲，用刀杀灭了所有人民。 9 但扫罗和众人怜惜亚甲，也爱惜上好的牛羊、肥牛犊、羊羔和一切美好的东西。他们不愿彻底毁灭这些；凡是卑贱的、没有价值的，他们就彻底毁灭。
扫罗受责
10 耶和华的话临到撒母耳说： 11 “我后悔立了扫罗为王，因为他已经离去不跟随我，也不执行我的命令了。”撒母耳非常忿怒，整夜哀求耶和华。 12 撒母耳清早起来，要在早晨去见扫罗；有人告诉撒母耳：“扫罗到了迦密，在那里为自己立了一座纪念碑，然后转身下到吉甲去了。” 13 撒母耳到了扫罗那里，扫罗对他说：“愿耶和华赐福给你！我已经执行了耶和华的命令。” 14 撒母耳说：“我耳中听见有羊叫牛鸣的声音，到底是甚么呢？” 15 扫罗回答：“这是众民从亚玛力人那里带来的，因为他们爱惜这些上好的牛羊，要献给耶和华你的 神为祭；其余的，我们都已经彻底毁灭了。” 16 撒母耳对扫罗说：“住口吧！让我把耶和华昨天晚上对我所说的话告诉你。”扫罗对他说：“请说。”
17 撒母耳说：“从前你虽然自以为微小，不是作了以色列众支派的首领吗？耶和华膏立了你作以色列的王， 18 差遣你去，说：‘你去彻底毁灭那些犯罪的亚玛力人，攻打他们，直到把他们全部毁灭。’ 19 你为甚么没有听从耶和华的话，急于夺取战利品，作了耶和华看为恶的事呢？”
20 扫罗回答撒母耳：“我实在听从了耶和华的话，行了耶和华差遣我行的路；我把亚玛力人的王亚甲带了回来，又把亚玛力人都彻底毁灭了。 21 可是众民却从那些战利品中，取了应当毁灭之物中上好的牛羊，要在吉甲献给耶和华你的 神为祭。” 22 撒母耳说：
“耶和华喜悦燔祭和平安祭，
岂像喜悦人听从耶和华的话呢？
听从胜过献祭，
听命胜过公羊的脂油。
23 因为悖逆与行邪术的罪相同，
顽梗与拜虚无偶像一样，
因为你弃绝了耶和华的话，
耶和华也弃绝了你作王。”
扫罗认罪
24 于是扫罗对撒母耳说：“我犯了罪了，我违背了耶和华的命令和你的话，因为我害怕众人，听从了他们的话。 25 现在求你赦免我的罪，与我一同回去，我好敬拜耶和华。” 26 撒母耳回答扫罗：“我不与你一同回去，因为你弃绝了耶和华的话，耶和华也弃绝你作以色列的王。” 27 撒母耳转身要走，扫罗拉着他外袍的衣边，衣边就撕裂了。 28 撒母耳就对他说：“今天耶和华把以色列国从你身上撕裂，赐给比你更好的人。 29 以色列的大能者必不说谎，也不后悔。因为他不是世人，他决不后悔。” 30 扫罗说：“我犯了罪了，但是求你在我人民的长老面前和以色列人面前给我面子，与我一同回去，我好敬拜耶和华你的 神。” 31 于是撒母耳跟着扫罗回去，扫罗就敬拜耶和华。
撒母耳杀掉亚玛力王
32 随后撒母耳说：“把亚玛力人的王亚甲带到我这里来！”亚甲欢欢喜喜走到他面前，心里说：“死亡的痛苦必定过去了！” 33 撒母耳说：“你的刀怎样使妇人丧子，你的母亲在妇人中也要怎样丧子。”于是撒母耳在吉甲，在耶和华面前把亚甲斩成碎块。
34 后来撒母耳回拉玛去，扫罗也上他所住的基比亚自己的家去了。 35 撒母耳直到死的日子，再没有看见扫罗。撒母耳为扫罗悲伤，因为耶和华后悔立了扫罗作以色列的王。
